COLUMBIA LAW SCHOOL

FRONT CENTER

Dear Alumni Friends,

Since joining Columbia in August of 2024, I have had the pleasure of meeting with and hearing from members of the Law School community, including alumni and friends around the globe. These conversations have inspired and energized me, reinforcing my belief that this is an extraordinary moment of opportunity for the Law School to build on our longestablished tradition of excellence and foundational academic values, and continue to flourish as a leader in legal education for years to come.

This annual report, which acknowledges gifts made during the 2023–2024 fiscal year (July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024), showcases many of the accomplishments made possible by your support. Thanks to donors like you, we raised nearly $45 million. Your continued loyalty is an exceptional vote of confidence in our students and faculty, and in our ambitions for the future.

Gifts to the Law School are inspired by as many reasons as there are donors. Some recent examples of your extraordinary support include a $5 million commitment from the Jerome L. Greene Foundation to honor my esteemed predecessor by establishing the Gillian Lester Fund for Student Financial Aid and by expanding the Greene Public Service Scholars program; a $5 million commitment to create the Grace Rodriguez ’86 Scholars Program—endowed by Rodriguez’s husband, John J. Sullivan ’85, and her family—which honors the memory of Rodriguez and provides a three-year, full-tuition scholarship to one incoming student every year; and a $5 million pledge from Annette L. Nazareth ’81 and Roger W. Ferguson Jr. to support the renovation of the Law Library.

We are deeply grateful for your participation in events and programs that brought Law School alumni together throughout the past year. In October 2023, we launched the Women of Columbia Law initiative with a daylong event that spotlighted the progress and promise of our alumnae; the program featured discussions on timely issues—advancing gender equality, achieving professional goals, breaking paradigms in the legal profession—along with networking opportunities. In March 2024, Women of Columbia Law hit the road for an event in Beverly Hills, California.

Back in New York, alumni gathered during the spring semester for annual events such as the Donors and Scholars Luncheon and the Alumni of Color Talk and Reception, where the keynote speaker was U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian ’04, the first judge of South Asian descent to serve on the bench in the Southern District of New York. And more than 350 members of the Columbia Law community attended the annual Winter Luncheon, where the Medal for Excellence was awarded to Rolando T. Acosta CC ’79, LAW ’82 and Alia Tutor ’00.

In May, the Law School marked the graduation of more than 800 J.D., LL.M., E.LL.M., and J.S.D. degree candidates at a Class Day ceremony featuring a keynote address from Kristen Clarke ’00, U.S. Assistant Attorney General and head of the Civil Rights Division at the U.S. Department of Justice.

The Columbia Law classes celebrating their reunion milestones are always eager to reengage with their classmates and use the occasion to make significant gifts in support of faculty recruitment and scholarship, student financial aid, capital projects, cocurricular programs, and a host of other initiatives and priorities. At Reunion 2024, nearly 1,000 alumni from 49 countries gathered in New York City to reminisce, reconnect, and raise more than $15 million.

We also kicked off the long-awaited Law Library renovation project, which will completely reimagine approximately 50,000 square feet of Jerome L. Greene Hall and create a beautiful new landmark for Columbia Law School. It’s becoming easier to envision the many benefits the space will offer to our students, including an open and expansive design and a significant increase in the number of study seats and reservable meeting rooms. Construction will continue throughout the 2024–2025 academic year, and the new Law Library is projected to open in fall 2025.

The Law School also welcomed several new faces (besides mine!) over the past year, including three extraordinary additions to the faculty: Dennis Fan ’15, an accomplished former state and federal appellate litigator, joined us in July 2024 and is creating our new Appellate Litigation Clinic; Clare Huntington ’96, a leading expert on family law and poverty law, and Dorothy S. Lund, a cutting-edge corporate law scholar, both joined us in July 2023.

Among my first steps as dean was to welcome our incoming J.D. and LL.M. classes this fall. Members of the J.D. Class of 2027 hail from 34 states as well as the District of Columbia and 22 countries outside of the U.S., and they speak or read dozens of languages. Members of the LL.M. Class of 2025 represent 63 countries and include 13 Fulbright Scholars.

As we look to a bright future together, I must acknowledge how challenging the previous year has been for our community. As Dean, one of my responsibilities is to help ensure that the Law School remains a place where all members of our community are able to express their views in an intellectual environment of respect and civility. The path forward requires a collective commitment to free expression and open discourse, and a willingness to, in the words of our Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg ’59, “disagree without being disagreeable.”

I am honored to lead the Law School at this moment in its history, and I am incredibly excited by the excellence and tremendous potential that our faculty, students, staff, and alumni represent. Thank you for your deep commitment to and belief in Columbia Law School.

Best regards,

Connecting Our Community LEADERS TRAILBLAZERS

Alumni and friends supported the Law School, expanded their legal knowledge, nourished their intellect, and reconnected with faculty and one another at a range of special events, programs, and gatherings throughout the year. Here are a few highlights; explore more at law.columbia.edu/news.

Reunite, Reflect, and Reenergize: Reunion 2024

In June 2024, nearly 1,000 Law School graduates and their guests, hailing from at least 49 countries around the world, enjoyed a weekend of celebration, learning, and reconnection.

A highlight of the weekend was a conversation between Ellen V. Futter BC ’71, LAW ’74, the former president of Barnard College and the American Museum of Natural History, and Gillian Lester, Dean and Lucy G. Moses Professor of Law, who stepped down from her leadership role on August 1.

Futter, who received the Law School’s Medal for Excellence in 2022 and currently serves as the interim president of the Markle Foundation, spoke about navigating the challenges that inherently come with leadership positions. As a president, “You’re not there just to hold the tiller, as it were, and just to make sure the ship can proceed smoothly— although in these times, and in any times, truthfully, it never proceeds smoothly,” Futter said. “I really believe that you’re there to advance an institution, to make it better, to make it more suited to the times.”

Other Reunion 2024 events included several programs featuring faculty and alumni. Panels included “Free Speech on Campus,” “Elections, Democracy, and Civil Rights,” and “AI: Regulation and Liability.”

Opposite page: Attendees at the Reunion 2024 Class of 1989 after-party, which was held at the Sony rooftop terrace and organized by G. Futter BC ‘71, LAW ‘74, faculty and alumni panels, and celebratory dinners.

Panelists and speakers at Women of Columbia Law events in New York City and Beverly Hills included: 1. Nina Shaw BC ’76, LAW ’79. 2. Professor Suzanne Goldberg. 3. Lorna Chen ’99 LL.M., ’01 J.D. 4. Esta Stecher ’82 and Adriene Holder ’91. 5. Professor Emerita Carol Sanger and Marcia Sells BC ’81, LAW ’84. 6. Kamilah Moore ’19.

Women of Columbia Law Launches

Women of Columbia Law, which launched in 2023, is designed to bring together alumnae and other members of the community from across generations and professional pathways to learn, network, and engage on topics of common interest.

The inaugural Women of Columbia Law event, held in October 2023 at Columbia’s Manhattanville Campus, featured discussions focused on timely issues especially relevant to women in law— advancing gender equality, achieving professional goals, and breaking paradigms in the legal profession—along with opportunities for guests to network and connect with one another.

Nina Shaw BC ’76, LAW ’79, founding partner of law firm Del Shaw Moonves Tanaka Finkelstein Lezcano Bobb & Dang, welcomed participants, noting that “every generation of Columbia Law women has their own story to tell.” But, she said, “Our common story must be how we made our society better as a whole and the legal profession better for the next generation of Columbia lawyers.” She spoke of her path to founding her own entertainment law firm despite the rarity of being a Black woman partner in the field.

“My work experience reinforced that I had to be a leader in my community, advocating for the rights

of women, because I could not let others experience the loneliness, isolation, and fatigue that came with being a singular figure among my peers,” she said. “It is in collective efforts that real and lasting change takes place.”

Other sessions included “United States v. Women: Advocating for Social Justice, Human Rights, and Gender Equality,” “Advancing Your Career: Ask for More,” and “Women of Columbia Law: Reshaping Professional Paradigms.”

In spring 2024, the initiative hit the road for the West Coast. A March 12 event at the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills featured conversations about the ways women are influencing the entertainment and media industries.

Kamilah Moore ’19, a reparatory justice expert and an attorney with a specialization in entertainment and intellectual property law, welcomed participants. She credited her experiences at Columbia Law School for preparing her for her work, particularly her service as chair of the California Reparations Task Force. “Columbia Law School was an ideal place for me, perfectly aligning with my interests and aspirations by providing comprehensive programs both on entertainment law and intellectual property, as well as civil and human rights,” she said.

Future regional gatherings are being planned to bring the Women of Columbia Law initiative to other cities across the U.S.

The Alumni of Color Talk and Reception featured a keynote from Judge Arun Subramanian ’04 (above), as well as time for networking and socializing.

Alumni of Color Talk and Reception

When U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian ’04 welcomed a group of high school students of color, who were seeking assistance for a moot court competition, to his courtroom in the Southern District of New York, he said that their excitement at meeting him—the first judge of South Asian descent in the district—was palpable.

“The kids told [their coach] how excited they were to see someone on the bench who looked like them,” he recalled during his keynote at Columbia Law School’s annual Alumni of Color Talk and Reception, held in January 2024. “And I get it. Because as a kid from a different background, it’s easy to feel like an outsider looking in.”

Subramanian reminded the audience of more than 100 alumni, faculty, and students gathered at the Andaz in midtown Manhattan to appreciate the impact they have as mentors. “Every one of you has someone in your life who has looked up to you, and who is just as excited as those kids in my courtroom to see a leader in the field of law who is like them—because it makes them believe that they are not outsiders,” he said.

“Representation matters.”

A former partner at Susman Godfrey, Subramanian clerked for Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg ’59 and said that his decision to pursue being a judge came just after her death, in 2020, as he stood with other former clerks outside the Supreme Court, where Ginsburg lay in repose. “I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the Justice,” he said. “For that and everything else, I am forever in her debt.”

Subramanian, whose parents immigrated to the U.S. from India a few months before his birth, in 1979, cited Ginsburg’s often-quoted remark that the difference between a bookkeeper in the Garment District (as Ginsburg’s mother was) and a Supreme Court justice was simply one generation.

“Everyone in this room has a similar story that underscores the possibilities and the progress that can be achieved in just a single generation in America,” he said.

Donors and Scholars Luncheon

The annual Donors and Scholars Luncheon is a celebration of philanthropy and possibility.

“Columbia Law has presented me with the chance to not only do, but also to lead, learn, and be curious with impact and compassion,” said Alexis Allen ’24 at the 2024 luncheon. During her time at the Law School, Allen served as vice chair of the Black Law Students Association, wrote a note for the Columbia Law Review, and interned in the White House Counsel’s Office. “With the support of donors … Columbia Law School has laid the foundation for these opportunities of scholarship, leadership, and growth.”

The history of scholarships at Columbia Law School dates back to 1899, with the initial 16 scholarships funded by J.P. Morgan and Cornelius Vanderbilt. Today, the Law School offers hundreds of scholarships, including 104 endowed scholarships created through funds raised during the five-year Campaign for Columbia Law, which concluded in October 2022 and raised $325 million. Student aid has increased significantly in the past decade, thanks to the loyal support of donors: In 2024, 55% of incoming first-year J.D. students received grant or scholarship aid.

At the 2024 luncheon, John J. Sullivan ’85 also announced that his family had recently endowed the Grace Rodriguez ’86 Scholars Program in memory of his wife, a Columbia Law alumna and partner at King & Spalding, who died in September 2022. (Read more on page 17.)

CLSA Board Welcomes New President

In fall 2023, the Columbia Law School Association (CLSA) welcomed its new president.

G. Wade Leak ’89, executive vice president, deputy general counsel, and chief compliance, ethics, and privacy officer for Sony Music Entertainment, stepped into the role following Rudy Carmenaty ’90, whose term as president concluded after five years of service.

The CLSA is a group of alumni volunteers that strives to keep graduates, friends, and supporters connected to the Law School and to each other. Members meet during the year, help share news about important developments—including the accomplishments of faculty, students, and alumni—with the Law School alumni community, and they encourage continued financial support for the Law School.

Constitutional Challenges to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB)

“If the NLRB is found to violate the Constitution, other government agencies could be at risk as well, including the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Election Commission, and the Federal Trade Commission. Faculty in the Media

The Law School faculty’s practice of engaging with critical legal questions extends beyond the classroom and academic journals. Drawing on their research and scholarship, Columbia Law faculty influence the public’s understanding of legal issues by serving as experts in news media. As public intellectuals, they share bold ideas in essays and interviews on topics ranging from financial regulation and artificial intelligence to constitutional law and international law—taking their work from Jerome L. Greene Hall to the world. See a sample of their expertise and thought leadership in the news from the summer of 2023 through the fall of 2024.

FAMILY LAW

Reforming Foster Care Funding Laws

“Funding law thus creates a rigid binary: Either children live with their parents, or they live with someone else. … What if the government provided funding to support a trusted family member or friend to help a parent without requiring that person to push a parent away? The parent and kin could work together to keep the child safe, and the financial help would support their relationship with each other and with the child. The funding would prevent the need for a more invasive step: the family separations inherent in foster care.”

The Role of the Prohibition of Annexations Amid a Rise in Territorial Conflicts

“Extensive research in history and political science shows that disputes over territory are more dangerous than other kinds of interstate disputes and that those involving claims of historic ownership are the most difficult to resolve. The prohibition of annexations is critical to preventing such conflicts, because this prohibition in effect locks territorial allocations in place, making them harder to change.”

“The children who are being exploited on a daily basis by meatpacking plants, in the construction industry, and working with toxic chemicals, for example, need all the protections possible. TEACHERS&SCHOLARS

Since 2017, the Law School has hired more than two dozen full-time faculty whose expertise and scholarship include numerous areas of legal study and practice. These professors focus on the theoretical (such as legal philosophy and legal history) and the practical (such as clinics in which students represent clients). There are faculty whose teaching and scholarship are oriented to public law and others whose work is concentrated on private law. These dividing lines, however, are porous, and many professors’ work is interdisciplinary and overlaps traditional boundaries. This matrix blurs boundaries, too—offering a conceptual overview of the primary interests of the new generation of Columbia Law faculty.

POSTGRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS

Max Berger Pathways Fellows

This past spring, Max Berger ’71 made a $1 million gift through the Dale and Max Berger Family Foundation to fund up to 10 postgraduate fellowships for Columbia Law students who demonstrate a commitment to pursuing careers in public interest law, public service law, and government. The Max Berger Pathways Fellows will spend a year working full time at an array of organizations and government offices.

The gift follows a $3 million commitment from the Berger Foundation in 2021 to endow the Law School’s Max Berger ’71 Public Interest/ Public Service Fellows Program, with another $300,000 for program support. The three-year program fosters a community of students who spend their time at the Law School together, examining the many facets of public interest lawyering and participating in specialized workshops, discussions, and off-site learning opportunities.

This latest gift and tremendous legacy of support from Berger and his firm have been instrumental in supporting public interest students, graduates, and related programming at the Law School.

A NETWORK OF MENTORS

Grace Rodriguez ’86 Scholars Program

When Grace Rodriguez ’86 died after a short illness at the age of 60 in 2022, her husband, John J. Sullivan ’85, their three children, and her mother were overwhelmed by the number of people who shared stories about Rodriguez’s role in their professional and personal lives as a counselor and confidante. With a $5 million commitment, Sullivan and his family established a program that perpetuates her legacy of mentorship while providing a three-year, full-tuition scholarship to one incoming student each year.

A longtime partner in the Washington, D.C., office of King & Spalding, Rodriguez “loved practicing law,” says Sullivan, former U.S. ambassador to the Russian Federation, former deputy secretary of state, and now a partner at Mayer Brown. “She was like a detective. … She had very good instincts as a human being.” Shortly after Rodriguez died, Sullivan began discussing ways to memorialize her with their children—Jack, Katie, and Teddy—and her mother, who is also named Grace. They agreed that a fitting legacy would be a scholarship at Columbia Law School, where she and Sullivan met.

The program will also develop a network of Rodriguez Scholars; recipients will be encouraged to perpetuate the values Rodriguez exemplified throughout her life by acting as mentors and role models for subsequent student recipients and fellow graduates of the program throughout their careers.

FIRST-GENERATION STUDENTS

Bridge to Opportunity Scholarship

In July 2024, Columbia Law School announced the creation of the Bridge to Opportunity Scholarship, a financial aid grant program to support students with financial need who are the first in their family to graduate from college. Recipients will receive a scholarship that covers the full cost of tuition for all three years of study in the J.D. program. “Through the generosity of our alumni and supporters, we hope to grow the program over time and be able to offer Bridge to Opportunity scholarships to up to 10 students from each entering J.D. class,” said Gillian Lester, who was Dean and Lucy G. Moses Professor of Law at the time of the announcement.

In addition to financial support, Bridge to Opportunity Scholars will have access to peer mentorship from Columbia Law First Generation Professionals, along with other resources integral to the Law School’s commitment to student success, such as academic support from Student Services; a robust and diverse network of alumni working in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors; and individualized financial aid counseling and financial literacy training.

Candidates are automatically considered for the Bridge to Opportunity Scholarship award upon review of their application for admission to the J.D. program.

Financial Overview

Our budget is carefully managed and, thanks to your support, Columbia Law thrives.

A MESSAGE FROM THE ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR DEVELOPMENT AND ALUMNI RELATIONS

As we prepare this annual report each year, I am continuously inspired by the profound generosity of our community. Each name listed on the following pages represents a donor as well as a story: a deep connection to Columbia Law School and a personal reason to give back. Through endowments, bequests, reunion and Annual Fund giving, and much more, every contribution— regardless of size—makes a powerful difference.

In the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2024, your generosity propelled us toward remarkable milestones— including significant progress in our project to reimagine the Law Library— and great enhancements in student support, which help ensure that the very best students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds can have access to an unparalleled legal education. Your gifts also provided essential support for faculty scholarship and recruitment, curricular innovation, and research centers and programs. Your contributions through the Annual Fund empower the Law School with the flexibility to address urgent needs and seize new opportunities.

And your impact doesn’t stop there. You dedicate your time—by returning to campus for events; serving on boards, councils, and committees; and sharing your expertise as instructors and guest speakers. Many of you also mentor students and fellow graduates as they navigate their careers and build their professional networks.

Every year at orientation, we remind our newest students that the connections they form here will last a lifetime. This truth is reflected in your continued commitment. Your camaraderie, curiosity, and unwavering support are without comparison. Because of you, generations of students will have the chance to experience transformative moments at Columbia Law and, like you, discover their own reasons to be proud, engaged members of this extraordinary community.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

CLASSMATES COLLEAGUES

Why We Give

From supporting the Annual Fund and Dean’s Discretionary Fund, to scholarships and capital projects, giving back to the Law School is a meaningful way to make an impact. And for these alumni, it is also a deeply personal choice.

STUDENT SUPPORT

Teresa Bazemore ’84

Corporate board director; mortgage banking industry consultant; former president, Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco

Member, Harlan Fiske Stone Society

Hometown: Los Angeles

Why I Give: As a student, Teresa Bazemore was highly involved with the Columbia Law community. She was president of the Black Law Students Association, co-edited a law journal, and even served as a resident adviser. To help ensure others have the same great experience, she directs her Annual Fund contributions to student support. “Columbia Law School has been such a fundamental and important part of what I’ve been able to do in my life and in my career,” she says. “I want to make sure that others have that benefit as well.” Bazemore supports the Eric H. Holder, Jr. Scholarship Fund— to honor the 82nd Attorney General of the United States, the first Black person to serve in the position—and the Dean’s Discretionary Fund— which allows the Dean to have the flexibility to meet the immediate needs of students. “It’s really important to make sure students don’t get derailed because of an issue they may have,” she says. “And I feel the Dean is in a good position to know how those funds should be used.”

Law School Moments: Coming from Virginia, Bazemore loved her time in New York, where a walk down the street could mean hearing conversations in multiple languages. “The whole cultural melting pot was so great, and the opportunities in arts, theater, and culture— you can’t compare anything to New York,” she says. “And I’ve lived in a bunch of different places.”

Alumni Advice:

“Never self-select yourself out of anything. I’m really an advocate of going after opportunities.”

Why I Give: Although he’s always enjoyed working in Big Law, Vineet Bhatia recognizes that many Columbia Law students want to pursue career paths in other sectors, but educational debt may deter them. The Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP) “can encourage students to do any number of things with their degree—it doesn’t have to be Big Law or a corporate job,” he says. “Law school is very expensive, so LRAP can give graduates more options in terms of what they can do when they get out.”

Law School Moments: Bhatia will never forget taking Contracts in his first semester with Professor E. Allan Farnsworth ’52. “It stands out in my mind because I was taking the class from the person who literally wrote the casebook,” he says. “The things I learned there I still remember and use today.” He also fondly remembers going every Thursday night for pizza at V&T (which is still in business on Amsterdam Avenue). “It was a great way to be with friends and take a break after a long week.”

Alumni Advice:

“There are a lot of ways to give back to the Law School and to shape the way the money is utilized. If you want to give back to the place where you got your degree, I would encourage you to direct the funds so they are used in a way you find meaningful.”

ANNUAL FUND & LRAP

Why I Give: After graduating as a Ruth Bader Ginsburg Prize winner and serving as notes editor of the Columbia Business Law Review, Beth Brandt has remained in close touch with Columbia Law School: She co-chaired the Class of 2018’s fifth reunion. She is motivated by gratitude for the Law School’s “world-class faculty, but also my brilliant and inspiring classmates and the location in New York City. I don’t believe I would have received as fulsome an education—in the law or life—anywhere else, and it’s important to me to give back to that community.” She directs her Annual Fund giving in part to the Dean’s Discretionary Fund.

“As involved as I still feel in the Columbia Law School community, I think the people who know best and most creatively where contributions are needed are those who are currently leading the school.”

Law School Moments: Brandt took a class on federalism created by Professors Gillian Metzger ’96, Olatunde C.A. Johnson, and Jessica Bulman-Pozen that was “equal parts difficult, creative, and energizing,” she says. The course, which was offered the year following the 2016 presidential election, “made me rethink politics, community engagement, and the impact that lawyers can have on the world.”

Alumni Advice:

“Academics are important, but your law school time will be so much more fulfilling if you make time for other things as well. Your classmates are some of your best resources, and with any luck, they can become lifelong friends.”

Guilherme Ferreira ’04

Institutional President, JiveMauá

Member, Harlan Fiske Stone Society

Hometown: São Paulo

ANNUAL FUND

Beth Brandt ’18

Associate, Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison

Member, Harlan Fiske Stone Society

Hometown: Waynesboro, Virginia

Why I Give: Guilherme Ferreira’s year at Columbia Law led to three years as an associate at Sidley Austin before joining Lehman Brothers as an attorney at the Latin American Fixed Income Desk in New York. That role planted the seeds for the company he founded in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis: JiveMauá, which buys assets from distressed banks. His LL.M. experience gave him a cohort of close friends around the world: “I wouldn’t have become—professionally or personally— who I’ve become if I hadn’t had those experiences.” He says he gives to the Law School to support student financial aid because “if we can make it possible for the people who are the most likely to have the biggest impact in our world to go through law school, regardless of whether they’re able to pay for it or not, that’s a worthy goal to pursue.”

Law School Moments: On studying corporate law and securities regulation with Professors John C. Coffee Jr., Jeffrey N. Gordon, and Zohar Goshen, Ferreira says, “They were amazing professors who taught us not only how the law works and how it’s applied in real life, but also where it’s going and what opportunities you can create to make a positive impact in the world through practice or through policy. It was eye-opening and mind-expanding.”

Alumni Advice:

“Choose your classes—and most of all, your professors—well. Work hard, and have fun. It goes by very fast, so try to enjoy it as much as you can.”

Andrew LeGrand ’09

Partner, Gibson Dunn

Hometown: Dallas

Why I Give: Andrew LeGrand’s approach to philanthropy is to recognize what has been given to you as an opportunity to give back. “I certainly wouldn’t be where I am today without the Law School,” he says. “The Law School was a big supporter of me and all my classmates and all of the students who came before me and have since come after me.”

When he heard about plans to reimagine the Law Library, he immediately realized it was a meaningful opportunity to help sustain the Law School’s legacy. “Research is a critical part of what lawyers do, so students need access to the best resources,” he says. “The library is an important training ground that the Law School provides.”

Law School Moments: “My classes and interactions with Professors Susan Sturm and Jack Greenberg had a big impact on me. Like many people, I went to law school to try to save the world and think about ways I could use the law to improve people’s lives. Both in and out of the classroom, those two professors were manifestations of that principle.”

Alumni Advice:

“Everyone has to make individual decisions that reflect their values and priorities. My advice to other alums would be: Don’t forget how important the Law School was in shaping who you are as a lawyer or what your career ultimately became, whether you’re practicing law or not. If you’re moved at all by the spirit to give, please give.”

Why I Give: As an alumna of one of the nation’s premier historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), Anne Robinson believes that it is important to bring the perspective of HBCU graduates into the law school classroom. That’s why she established the Anne Elizabeth Robinson ’94 Scholarship Fund at Columbia Law for HBCU graduates. “I wanted to make sure that the Law School was accessible and had the resources to embrace diversity in the classroom,” she says. Robinson has been a consistent supporter of the Law School. “I find the more you give, the more you get out of it,” she says. “Columbia Law is a special place, and I enjoy staying connected to my fellow graduates.”

Law School Moments: Through her affiliation with the Ira M. Millstein Center for Global Markets and Corporate Ownership, Robinson has gotten to know Professor Jeffrey N. Gordon. When it was announced she was going to join IBM as chief legal officer, Gordon gave her his vintage IBM Selectric typewriter. “It’s very dear to me,” she says. “I now have it in my office. It’s reflective of the community that Columbia Law School creates.”

Alumni Advice:

“Our commitment to each other didn’t end when we graduated. I’m a big proponent of the idea that you create the community that you want to be a part of. And giving is one of the ways in which we can be a part of creating a community that is important not just to us, but also to future law students.”

THE ANNUAL FUND: SHAPING THE FUTURE OF EXCELLENCE IN LEGAL EDUCATION

CHOOSE FROM A VARIETY OF ANNUAL FUND DESIGNATIONS AND LEVELS OF SUPPORT:

Dean’s Discretionary: Provide the Dean with the flexibility to fund urgent needs, supporting Columbia Law School’s dynamism and reinforcing its position as one of the world’s leading centers for legal education.

Faculty Support: Help the Law School recruit and retain the world’s foremost legal scholars, invest in their research and teaching, and bring to campus outstanding visiting professors and guest lecturers from around the world.

A great law school depends on the strength of its community.

Gifts to the Annual Fund stand apart from others because they are available right away, enabling the Dean to seize opportunities and bring new ideas to life. By giving to the Annual Fund, you ensure that students and faculty have the resources needed to address society’s most pressing issues.

“I give to the Annual Fund because of its immediate impact. It allows the Dean to be responsive in real time to a rapidly changing educational environment and to pursue strategic priorities for the longer term as well. There is not an aspect of life at Columbia Law School … that the Annual Fund does not touch and make better.”
—MICHAEL R. GRIFFINGER ’64

Student Support: Contribute to the Law School’s longstanding commitment to ensuring that the very best students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds have access to the finest legal education. Nearly two-thirds of Columbia Law students receive financial aid.

International and LL.M. Programs: Fund scholarships and programs for LL.M. and international students, building on Columbia Law’s history of leadership and distinction in international law.

Public Service and Public Interest Law: Ensure that a career serving the public interest is a choice all students can make. Support public interest courses, the Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP), social justice and human rights initiatives, pro bono projects, and more.

Learning Environment: Support the Law School’s infrastructure and provide the best possible facilities and technology to support teaching, learning, and collaboration outside the classroom.

The Harlan Fiske Stone Society: Become part of a prestigious community committed to upholding the highest standards of legal excellence. Your leadership support drives Columbia Law’s mission to cultivate the next generation of legal innovators and public servants. Named for the fourth dean of Columbia Law School and 12th chief justice of the United States, the society recognizes those who make an annual contribution of $2,500 or more. Members enjoy special recognition, insider access to Law School events, listing in a special section of the Law School’s annual report, and opportunities to connect with faculty, students, and fellow leaders in the legal community.

The Harlan Fiske Stone Society

To the following alumni and friends who contributed to Columbia Law School at the level of the Harlan Fiske Stone Society during the 2023–2024 Fiscal Year, thank you.

You are leaders in the Law School community, and your generous support underscores your commitment to the future excellence of our institution.

This section recognizes gifts received from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024.

Reunion Class Giving

Reunion 2024 was a weekend of renewed friendships and community. Nearly 1,000 alumni from 49 countries reunited at events including a kickoff cocktail reception for all classes in Midtown Manhattan along with discussions featuring faculty and alumni, a family picnic, and festive class dinners on the Morningside campus. The 225 co-chairs, committee members, and planned-giving ambassadors of the classes celebrating their 5th to 60th reunions embraced this year with a sense of community and signature Columbia spirit.

This year’s reunion classes raised $15 million. The Classes of 1974 and 1979 had the highest rates of fundraising participation; the Class of 1984 had the highest overall giving ($4.2 million), followed by the Class of 1974 ($2.9 million), and the Class of 1999 ($1.6 million). With appreciation and gratitude, we highlight the Reunion 2024 Class Gift efforts on the following pages.

Graduating Class Gift

For many years at commencement, members of Columbia Law School’s graduating class presented a gift to the Law School as they moved from students to alumni—a tradition since the late 1990s to support the students who follow in their footsteps.

Beginning in 2020, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, a new tradition emerged. For the past four years, select alumni have designated their giving in honor of the graduating class.

Inspired by the opportunity to “pass the baton to the next generation,” Columbia Law School alumnus Matthew R. Kipp ’89, along with his wife, Susan, made a gift in honor of the graduating Class of 2024. Student support is central to Matthew and Susan’s generosity to the Law School. And Matthew looks forward to celebrating future reunions with this graduating class.

This gift will help the Dean meet the needs of Columbia Law students.

Estate Planning & Bequests

The Kent Affiliates of the 1754 Society honors and acknowledges alumni and friends who have made future plans for Columbia Law School through bequests, beneficiary designations, life income, and other future gifts. We are delighted to recognize those listed here who have accepted membership in this prestigious society.

AL CINELLI ’55

Albert E. “Al” Cinelli ’55, a telecom entrepreneur and philanthropist whose gifts to Columbia Law School provide support for scholarships, curriculum enhancements, and faculty research, died on November 5, 2023. He was 94. Cinelli worked as a litigator and general counsel and then built and led fiber-optic companies including internet service provider MetroNet. In 2005, he established the Albert E. Cinelli Enterprise Chair to support faculty members teaching courses that train leaders for the business world. In 2022, he created the Albert and Lois Cinelli Business Law Fund as, he said, “my way to say thank you” to the Law School.

EDWARD LLOYD

Edward Lloyd, a leading environmental activist, crusading public interest lawyer, and founder of the Environmental Law Clinic at Columbia Law School, where he taught for 21 years, died on August 5, 2023. He was 74. As clinic director, Lloyd provided hands-on training to scores of future lawyers as they worked to solve environmental challenges. His students recalled him as an effective and assertive litigator, reasonable negotiator, engaging teacher, and gentle mentor. Lloyd also maintained a full docket of environmental work in his home state of New Jersey, where he won acclaim for protecting waterways and sensitive lands from hazardous waste.

IRA M. MILLSTEIN ’49

Ira M. Millstein SEAS ’47, LAW ’49, the longestserving partner at Weil, Gotshal & Manges, a prominent civic leader in New York City, and an ardent supporter of Columbia Law School, where he taught and established the Ira M. Millstein Center for Global Markets and Corporate Ownership, died on March 13, 2024. He was 97. An authority on antitrust law, Millstein championed corporate governance reform and helped transform the relationship between boards and shareholders. With his son, Jim Millstein ’82, he endowed the Millstein Public Service Fellowship. Millstein received the Law School’s highest honor, the Medal for Excellence, in 2014.

Faculty, Friends, Parents, Staff & Students

Columbia Law School has many partners who support our mission. We offer our sincere gratitude to our extended family of faculty, staff, friends, and students and their parents.

DEAN EMERITA GILLIAN LESTER HONORED WITH GIFT FROM JEROME

L. GREENE FOUNDATION

For Gillian Lester, Alphonse Fletcher Jr. Professor of Law and Dean Emerita, one of the most meaningful aspects of her tenure as the 15th dean of the Law School (2015–2024) was improving access to a Columbia Law education through landmark investments in student financial aid and loan repayment assistance.

The Jerome L. Greene Foundation has been a critically important partner in this effort. In 2017, the foundation pledged $15 million, with $7 million earmarked to establish the Greene Public Service Scholars program. In March 2024, it announced a $5 million gift to expand the program and create the Gillian Lester Fund for Student Financial Aid. The new gift will carry forward Lester’s legacy and impact.

“Throughout my time as dean, I have worked to open the doors of Columbia Law to students from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds. The Greene Foundation has been a tremendous partner every step of the way,” said Lester when the gift was announced. “Financial aid is truly life-changing and provides a critical pathway to Columbia Law for so many talented future leaders in the profession.”

The new gift includes $4 million to support the Greene Scholars program with an additional three-year, full-tuition scholarship for an incoming student, bringing the total number of scholarships awarded each year to three, starting with the Law School’s incoming class in 2024. The remaining $1 million gift is structured as a matching challenge to support the new Gillian Lester Fund for Student Financial Aid; the foundation will match one-to-one donations of $5,000 and above, up to $1 million total, during the challenge period from February 2024 through December 2025.

“The Jerome L. Greene Foundation is proud to honor Dean Lester’s dedication to improving student aid and making a Columbia Law School education accessible to students interested in public service,” said Foundation President and CEO Christina McInerney. “This new gift will help Columbia Law School eliminate financial barriers that can sometimes keep some of the brightest and most dedicated students from pursuing public service.”

“Financial aid is truly life-changing and provides a critical pathway to Columbia Law for so many talented future leaders in the profession.”
—Gillian Lester
