Cayee and Tetsuo the Turtle

Cayee is a little girl who lives in Japan.
One day she sees a turtle trying to cross the road. “Oh no, you are going to get hurt by a car!” Cayee exclaims as she picks up the turtle. “Where are you going?”
“Uff, thank you for helping me! My name is Tetsuo. I am going to a respect rally,” answers the turtle.

“What is a respect rally?” asks Cayee. “A respect rally is when a group of different animals get together to encourage respect for each other and for the world around us. Do you know what the word ‘respect’ means?” Tetsuo inquires. “I think so. Isn’t it the same thing as ‘honour’?” Cayee responds. “Aha! That’s right! We are respectful when we honour and follow the rules of our family, school and community. When you are respectful you treat others fairly, you listen politely and you don’t use bad language. We must respect adults and especially our parents, they deserve it,” Tetsuo explains.

Cayee carries Tetsuo to the respect rally.
There are all kinds of animals holding up signs that read: “RESPECT EACH OTHER!” “RESPECT THE EARTH!”
Tetsuo grabs the microphone. He clears his throat, “Ahem, we are all different. We need to treat each other with courtesy and love!” Tetsuo continues, “We need to treat the earth with respect, too. Recycle, Reduce and Reuse!”

That night at dinner, Cayee’s mum says her parents all about the respect rally.

Cayee’s mum said, “That’s great, Cayee! Everyone should be treated with courtesy.”
Then she asks them, “I understand that everyone should be treated with respect, but I do not understand what ‘recycle’ means?”

Her father explains, “Recycle means setting aside certain kinds of rubbish, so they can be used again. When we reuse things we show respect for the planet.”

“Perhaps you can get other kids to help you,” her mum suggests. “Yeah, I will ask the new student at school that is from another country. I am going to show him the respect he deserves. Maybe I can even ask him to help me start a recycling club!” Cayee said with enthusiasm.

“I like that!” exclaims Cayee, “I am going to start looking for ways to show respect!”

Respect is when you speak to others with kind words and act with good manners. You follow the rules and do not answer back to your parents, teachers or any adult. You appreciate that everyone is different in the way they look, act or think. If you do, others will respect you. We must also respect the earth.
Taking care of the earth and its inhabitants means treating it with respect. You must also respect yourself.
You show RESPECT when...
…you place rubbish in its place and take care of our planet.
…you don’t ignore your friend’s feelings.
…you acknowledge the needs of those around you.
…you answer politely to your parents, grandparents and teachers.
…you never embarrass, insult or make fun of others.
…you wait for your turn to voice your opinion without interrupting the one who is talking.
