POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER (PTSD)

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Is a condition that occurs when something scary or dangerous happens to you or someone you know.

It could be an accident, a disaster, or a lot of stress over time.

When something traumatic happens, we all react differently.

Anyone, no matter their age, can develop PTSD. 4

There are different signs of PTSD that we should know about.

One common sign is “re-experiencing” the trauma, where we keep thinking about and remembering the scary event even when we don’t want to.

It’s like our mind is stuck in the past and we can’t stop thinking about it.

Another sign is wanting to avoid anything that reminds us of the scary event.

We might feel disconnected from our family and friends or have extreme reactions like trouble sleeping or feeling irritable.

Managing PTSD is Important • Getting help from a mental health expert and having supportive people around us can make a big difference.

• Learning about PTSD helps us understand what we are going through and see ourselves as survivors.

• Helping others who have been through similar things can also be healing.

• If we know someone with PTSD, we can be a friend by listening and offering support.

• Encouraging them to pursue their dreams and passions can give them courage.

• It is important to encourage them to seek professional help too.

Remember, if you or someone you know has PTSD, you are not alone.

There are people who can help on the healing journey.

Seeking support, understanding the symptoms, and finding ways to cope are important steps toward recovery.
