Construction at 50 Fenchurch Street is progressing rapidly. The ‘slipform’ core of the commercial tower – featured on the cover of this publication – was approaching level 15 when the photo was taken in the third week of May. A ‘slipform’ is the result of a construction technique where concrete is poured into a moving framework, with the framework serving as a mold that is continuously moved vertically. Pre-fabricated core elements (like staircases, as seen above) are placed at each level as the concrete is poured around them, securing them in place and facilitating speed and efficiency, while reducing waste and decreasing the carbon footprint of the construction site.

In a new op-ed for Tall Buildings Media, Karl Wilkinson (50 Fenchurch Street Project Director for contractor Multiplex), described the innovative techniques that are driving the smarter, more sustainable construction of the site (use the QR code to read more from the April 2026 edition).

CELEBRATING OVER A DECADE WITH THE CLERK As Jocelyn Stuart-Grumbar Completes His Final Year as Clerk to The Company, Our Clothworker Community Shares Its Appreciation of His Service ‘Joss’ (as he is known among friends) has served as Clerk to The Clothworkers’ Company since June 2015, providing leadership and enabling growth across The Company and The Foundation for more than a decade.

He recently announced his plans to retire at the end of 2026, which gives us an opportunity – before he goes – to share some insights on his contributions to Clothworkers’ from those who have worked closely with him over the years.

HOW IT STARTED ...

Assistant Emeritus and Past Master Michael Howell – who served as Master (2014-15) when Jocelyn was appointed – shared the following: The Clerk’s role is extremely diverse. It is notable that most companies choose former military officers for their Clerks.

Presumably, that is because most such officers are accustomed to the hubbub of the officers’ mess, the collegiality of military life, and the pomp of formal ceremonies.

However, most ex-officers are not used to the even more important aspects of the job: managing an asset base of many millions of

pounds, and making money from a significant portfolio of buildings and land.

Luckily for The Clothworkers’ Company, Joss arrived with essential commercial sense, and has proven his business competence in every area. He has shown prowess in boosting the capital value of our assets by successfully closing the deal to rebuild our livery hall, and overseen the ongoing construction of the new hall and commercial tower at 50 Fenchurch Street, our

historic site.

In retrospect, we actually needed a user-friendly polymath, with a huge range of personal attributes – warmth and empathy, coupled with firm nerves and steel teeth!

Amazingly, that’s what we got.

Albeit, the packaging was deceptive!

Joss is the most amiable and urbane person I know. He remains unruffled in all circumstances, including dire emergencies, and always has the MEMBERS’ SUPPLEMENT | 3

And yet he also delivers. His achievement has been – literally – towering.

And by the way, in 2014, the senior naval officer, whom the membership committee injudiciously considered, happily never joined us. It would have been a total disaster!

Thus Joss, together with Catherine (his wife), are going to be very sorely missed. They have both added so much to our ancient institution, without in any way being stuffy. To the contrary, they are cheerful and courteous, yet action-orientated.

Bravo to them both!

HOW IT’S GOING ...

Assistant Emeritus and Past Master Michael Jarvis – who served as Master (2016-17), Chair of The Foundation, and Chair of the Superintendence Committee with Jocelyn – shared the following: When I was asked to offer some words as the time comes when Joss will be withdrawing from The Company, I thought it would be valuable to seek some reflections from a few newer Members: ‘Joss has seemed to me to be the embodiment of Company fellowship, and has set a most gracious example of The Company’s

expectations of Member etiquette and conduct – which, to a new Freedom Member, was invaluable.’

‘What has always stood out to me was the warm-hearted individual [Joss] is, and the welcome I’d always get from him. He also has an excellent memory and remembers the details I tell him about my work, which I appreciate.

Many blessings to him.’

I am so glad to have received those delightful quotes, because they express more vividly, than perhaps I readily could have done, some of the characteristics in Joss that are so instantly recognisable.

I was enormously fortunate over time to be brought forward by Joss’s predecessor. And again, as an established Member of the Court and Foundation, to find myself in a succession of positions working alongside Joss following his appointment – in non-executive roles as Chair of The Foundation, Master, and, in due course, as Chair of the Superintendence Committee.

In all those capacities, I found it very easy to work closely with Jocelyn, invariably searching for the best of outcomes for the regular dilemmas that we faced. It wasn’t always easy.

And we faced criticism from time to time – no doubt inevitable for a membership organisation. With the relationship we established, we

could be frank with each other on those occasions when we were not immediately of the same mind (quite seldom) and overtly supportive of each other when that was appropriate.

One very distinct memory of my year as Master is of a two-day visit we made together to Northern Ireland (spring 2017). The purpose was to connect with seven charities to which The Foundation had made grants in immediately preceding years. This took us, initially, to Londonderry, and then to Belfast. All very much an eyeopener for me, as the residual enmity was still so apparent in the streets.

As we entered the Londonderry Townhall (before joining the Mayor for tea), an official sidled up to me and whispered, ‘Would you like to play the organ, sir?’. Clearly a ‘set-up’ by Joss. Unsurprisingly, I replied, ‘Yes, please’. I obviously had no music, so improvised for some 12 minutes on this historic and distinguished instrument. As I turned the machinery off and swung round to put my Chelsea boots back on, I heard huge applause from a large group of Japanese students, who seemed to think that the recital had been arranged for them ...

While, so obviously, I thank Joss for his highly successful term as Clerk and for the mutual rapport that we, and many others, were able to establish with him over the years.

And, I sense that he may have some serious energy left in his backpack!

I end by reminding readers of the invaluable role played by Catherine, his wife, throughout these years – so clearly a vital support for Joss and the wider family, and a cheerful contributor to so many Clothworkers’ events.

In April 2026, the Textile Centre of Excellence (TCoE) held a Golden Jubilee & Awards Ceremony, and 50th Anniversary Celebration. The final

award of the night – the Distinguished Service Award – was presented to Jocelyn by TCoE’s Board Director and the Managing Director of Wooltex UK, Richard Brook. The award recognises a truly outstanding career defined by global leadership, unwavering dedication, and lasting contribution to the textiles sector.

Shahban Aziz, TCoE Managing Director, said, ‘Jocelyn’s impact on the sector has been nothing short of transformational. From championing initiatives like the Sustainability Champions Network — supporting over 80 companies and delivering multi-millions of pounds of impact to advancing education through Edu4Tex in schools and partnerships with universities reaching thousands of students, his work continues to shape the future of our sector.

‘A well-deserved recognition for a career built on vision, innovation, service, and passion. Congratulations, Jocelyn.’

The TCoE award recognises the role Joss has played in helping The Company make a meaningful difference in support for textiles education, skills development, and training. He has also led the way in securing Clothworkers’ reputation as a collaborative funder, investor, and supporter across its other mission-driven civic, community and philanthropic endeavours. He has, at the same time, fostered an inclusive and welcoming Fellowship over many years, where all our new – and longstanding – Clothworkers continually find new reasons to be proud of and ways to connect with The Company, its work, and other Members in the community.

A TOAST TO THE TOASTMASTER: JAMIE WALLIS A Note From The Clerk, Jocelyn Stuart-Grumbar I had known Jamie since before I joined Clothworkers’ – in my capacity as a Livery Member of The Vintners’ Company, where Jamie has served as a Toastmaster for nearly 30 years.

Honourable Artillery Company.

There, I spent over 20 years marching, playing, and generally making a noise, much of it, I like to think, in the right place and at the right time.

Speaking about his journey to become one of the most soughtafter Toastmaster’s in the City, Jamie shared:

‘By the early 1990s, when my firm decided to decamp to Essex, I chose to stay loyal to the City. Around that time, I stumbled into the world of livery companies, an introduction that changed everything. A chance meeting at Plaisterers’ Hall led to my training as a Toastmaster, proving that occasionally being in the right place at the right time really does pay off.’

‘My City career began in the mid-1960s, as an office boy in the reinsurance market at Lloyd’s of London. In 1974, seeking something a little more adventurous, I joined the

Jamie has recently retired at the very top of his game. His first appearance for Clothworkers’ was at the Civic Dinner in 2015 ( just before I arrived), and we have been delighted to have him in charge of proceedings for more than 10 years – making his last appearance in the role for our October Court and Livery Dinner at Drapers’ Hall (2025).

More important even than his sartorial splendour, Jamie is such an enormously diligent and professional practitioner of his art!

As the many Clothworkers who have met him will know, Jamie has an excellent sense of humour, which

undoubtedly helps put people at their ease.

Three years ago, in 2023, we were absolutely thrilled (if a little surprised!) to find that Jamie was at liberty to become a Clothworker.

I know this to be a source of pride to him. It also means that, with a bit of luck, we may have the honour of seeing him again – not in his full plumage, but in mufti – at our St Thomas’ Eve Freedom Lunch in future years.

UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS SPIN-OUT SWITCHDYE Researched-Based Polyester Dye Company Secures Industry Partner SwitchDye was born out of a conversation between Professors Richard Blackburn and Christopher Rayner at the University of Leeds, who shared a vision for a drop-in technology that would solve growing issues in textiles manufacturing. That vision was brought to life through a decade of research and development by Dr Nathaniel Crompton and Dr Harrison Oates, who turned it into a working, scalable solution with the power to transform the industry.

Dr Crompton, Chief Executive Officer, developed the SwitchDye technique as part of his PhD project in the Schools of Chemistry and Design. Dr Oates, the Chief Technology Officer, did a PhD at the Priestly Centre for Climate Futures; he met Crompton at Leed’s Wolfson CO2 Chemistry Lab. The start-up is now based at the university’s innovation community hub, Nexus, with its four founders continuing their work together.

Using facilities at the university’s School of Design and the Leeds Institute of Textiles and Colour (LITAC), the researchers have rigorously tested the dyes over many years, making sure they meet or exceed industry standards for colour fastness.

In 2025, the company’s interdisciplinary team unlocked a way to use carbonated water to make large savings in chemical intensity, water pollution, and energy. Polyester makes up more than half of all global fibre output, with production increasing each year – but it takes centuries to decompose and it can be difficult to recycle from garmentto-garment. Textile production is estimated to be responsible for about 20% of global clean water pollution, and polyester dyeing alone releases around 280,000 tonnes of waste dye and other chemicals annually.

SwitchDye’s technology removes additives that typically account for

up to 90% of chemicals, without compromising performance. It is designed as a drop‑in for common dye house equipment, allowing mills to keep using their existing machinery.

In addition to the chemical savings and reduction in waste, the new dyeing system can also streamline operations by reducing rinse stages and shortening machine time, using 40% less water and saving on energy.

The dyes can also be removed more easily at the end of product life, supporting fibre-to-fibre recycling.

To date, SwitchDye has received funding from organisations including Clothworkers’, The Dyers’ Company, LITAC, The John Lewis Partnership Circular Future Fund in collaboration with Hubbub, the Northern Triangle Talent Project (led by the University of Sheffield), and the UKRI Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The

Clothworkers’ Company has continued its 150-year-old tradition of supporting research innovation and collaboration in Leeds with its £1.8 million for the LITAC in 2021, and ongoing funding for student scholarships and more to this day – strengthening the university’s ability to provide ground-breaking interdisciplinary research and collaboration with industry partners.

Now, a significant minority equity investment from John Hogg Technical Solutions will support the company’s industrial validation in working mill environments.

Providing technical input, manufacturing, and stewardship expertise, along with access to

customer networks, John Hogg will support SwitchDye in moving from lab to mill at pace.

The university’s commercialisation team worked alongside SwitchDye to make investor introductions and provided funding to help the team achieve commercial validation.

Dr Oates said: ‘Partnering with John Hogg gives us the technical expertise and industry reach to move from lab success into consistent, real-world application.

Over the coming months, we’ll be working closely with dye houses and brands to demonstrate how the technology integrates into existing equipment and delivers measurable savings.’

Sam Walton, Chief Technical Officer at John Hogg, said: ‘The partnership with SwitchDye marks the start of an inspiring journey with the potential to improve the future of textile manufacturing for many years to come.

‘At John Hogg, we have always taken pride in understanding our customers’ needs and the evolving demands of the market. Being part of an innovation that delivers a true step forward in sustainable dyeing technology is something we are genuinely excited about.

We also see clear alignment between our businesses, with John Hogg’s wider capabilities helping to accelerate SwitchDye’s path to commercialisation.’

MEET THE MAKERS: GOLDSMITHS’ CRAFT & DESIGN COUNCIL AWARD WINNERS Jessica Collins, Head of Collections and Archives, Reveals the Silversmiths Who Won Our Clothworkers’ Sponsored Prizes The Clothworkers’ Company collaborated with the Goldsmiths’ Craft and Design Council (GC&DC) to sponsor a prize, for the third year running, at GC&DC’s annual awards. The awards — fondly dubbed the ‘Oscars of jewellery and silversmithing’ — are part of the GC&DC’s mission to encourage, stimulate and promote the pursuit of excellence in craftsmanship and design. Head of Collections and Archives Jessica Collins served as a judge, while Court Member and Chair of our Collections and Archives SubCommittee Alastair Mathewson presented our Gold Prize.

breaking number of entrants this year, with work of exceptional standard across all categories.

Accordingly, the judges felt three entries by Daniel Bollard, Alice Baker-Russell, and Militsa Milenkova each warranted gold certificates in the handcrafted silver category. Ultimately, The Clothworkers’ Company Gold Prize Award went to Militsa, for her exquisite Dolerite goblet, which showcased the best of craft and innovative design. The goblet was inspired by the form of Edinburgh Castle and is now

in the permanent collection of the Edinburgh Assay Office.

Militsa holds a BA (Hons) in Silversmithing and Jewellery from The Glasgow School of Art, and continues to be based in Scotland.

When celebrating her award on Instagram, Militsa said: ‘I am delighted to share that I was awarded Gold in the Handcrafted Silverware category, a Bronze in the Junior Silversmiths’ Craft category, as well as The Clothworkers’ Company Award for my Dolerite

The Clothworkers’ Award in handcrafted silverware celebrates core craft skills among emerging silversmiths such as hammering techniques (ie hand raising, blocking, caulking, bouging, planishing), box making, spinning, chasing and repoussé. Makers under the age of 30 years old are encouraged to compete by submitting pieces that demonstrate these skills, ideally incorporating references to textiles.

CLOTHWORKER MEMBERS’ FUND (CMF) In 2025, MammaKind Received £42,000 and Opened a New Warehouse Founded in 2020, MammaKind is a baby bank serving four boroughs in South East London – areas where more than 40% of children are living in poverty. The charity focuses on supporting mums with children (up to 5 years old) by providing essential donated items such as cots, highchairs, clothing, and toys. In 2025, CMF donors chose to award MammaKind one of the three main grants, worth £42,000.

We asked Kirsty Lowe, Co-Founder and Chair, what difference did it make to the charity to receive unrestricted funding? She said, ‘The Clothworkers’ grant represents approximately 20% of MammaKind’s annual running costs, which is hugely significant for a small charity, and the unrestricted nature of the grant was transformative.’

Kirsty shared that unrestricted funding is critical for meeting the real costs of running the service. At MammaKind, those costs include rising warehouse expenses, the costs of three core staff roles, and the challenge of sourcing essential items for families (such as nappies), which all place pressure on the organisation.

Unrestricted funding allows these operational necessities to be met.

The CMF grant was allocated directly to running costs, supporting

core operations including salaries and ensuring the organisation could continue delivering essential services reliably and safely. The grant is helping to stabilise the infrastructure behind the delivery of services, allowing the charity to move forward with its ambitious plans. Last year, MammaKind was able to open a new warehouse near Greenwich Town Centre and secured funding from additional sources to open a pop-up, drop-in support service.

The charity currently works with approximately 25 regular volunteers.

Lucy Stock, a MammaKind volunteer since September 2020, said, ‘I believe every child, regardless of their circumstances, has the right to have what they need to grow, learn, and develop. It is a privilege to volunteer at MammaKind, with a wonderful team in a warehouse full of amazing donations, which makes a real difference to real lives in our local community.’

It is also expanding itscorporate volunteer programmes, and currently has 15 partners. Corporate volunteer intake needs to be managed carefully due to the time required for training and variable skill levels. The larger warehouse has enabled regular volunteers to tackle ongoing work, such as repairing items, cleaning and stacking shelves, reorganising stock,

and supporting deliveries. Volunteers from corporate partners continue to provide year-long support and are particularly involved during the October to December Christmas campaign period.

TIME, TALENT & TREASURE: BECOME A VOLUNTEER Scientific studies have found that doing something to help others is good for your mental and physical health, self-esteem, and can even help you live longer. Volunteering is also a great way to build new skills and gain work experience. We are extremely proud of our Clothworker Team and Foundation Trustees for delivering a service that our grant recipients value so highly. Through a survey

by Charity Excellence, 89 separate organisations nominated our

Foundation, earning us a place on the list alongside impressive peers such as Garfield Weston (winner!), Lloyds Bank Foundation for England and Wales, UK Community Foundations, and The National Lottery Community Fund.

Last year, The Foundation rolled out a new Impact Framework,

updated Application Guidance, and introduced a streamlined Application Process for the Open Grants Programme — all hosted on a new website. To have this feedback from the organisations which The Foundation aims to support means a huge amount — and makes us determined to keep adapting to the needs of the sector.

MASTER ELECT 2026-27 DR LUCY RAWSON, 507TH MASTER OF THE COMPANY Lucy became Free of The Clothworkers’ Company in 1989, and was elected to the Court as an Assistant in 2016. She served as a Trustee of The Clothworkers’ Foundation for several years before becoming Chair (2020-23).

Lucy studied medicine at King’s College London, qualifying in 1989.

In 1994, she joined a rural general practice in Surrey as a GP Principal, where she went on to play a central role for more than three decades.

Alongside her clinical work, she was also a GP Trainer and Appraiser, supporting colleagues across Kent, Surrey, and Sussex. work as a GP locum and Appraiser.

During her time at the practice, she helped guide a period of substantial growth, doubling patient numbers and greatly expanding the multidisciplinary healthcare team. She was also actively involved in Dorking Healthcare, a private provider of NHS services. A committed advocate of traditional general practice, Lucy deeply valued the long-standing relationships she built with her patients and was a strong champion of continuity of care. In recognition of her contribution to general practice, she was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of General Practitioners in 2016. Although she retired from her practice in 2025, she continues to

Lucy is a second-generation Clothworker. Her father, Sam Rawson, served as Master (200405), as did her uncle, Christopher Rawson (1988-89). Her sister, Susanna O’Leary, is a Court Assistant. Lucy is married to Marc Kernick, and they have three sons, all of whom are Members of the Freedom.

In her spare time, Lucy enjoys walking her fox-red Labrador, Rosy, along the footpaths of the Surrey Hills, as well as cycling and hill walking in the Lake District. She has recently developed a passion for gardening and takes great pleasure

in sharing her home-grown produce with friends and former patients.

Lucy and Marc are active members of their local church and share a love of sailing, with many adventures aboard their much-loved dinghy, Skylark, as well as on bareboat charters around the world. She is a regular member of the Clothworkers’ Sailing Team – although she readily admits her spinnaker handling could still benefit from further practice!

ELECTIONS 2026-27 WARDENS, COURT ASSISTANTS & LIVERY First Warden Ms Joanna Dodd A former Clothworker Exhibitioner (Classics and Modern Languages) at St Catherine’s College Oxford, Joanna got back in contact with The Company some years later, when one of her then clients, the Royal Hospital Chelsea (home of the Chelsea Pensioners) was in contact with several Livery Companies. She was admitted by Redemption in 2009, joining the Livery in 2010 and the Court in 2016. Joanna sits on a number of Company committees and sub-committees, and is currently Deputy Chair of Superintendence.

Prior to St Catherine’s, she was educated at Roedean and has worked in Public Relations since 1986, both in-house and in consultancy, both working for independent agencies as well as within the Saatchi & Saatchi and Bartle Bogle Hegarty groups.

She was a director of the ChinaBritain Business Council (2010-16) and founded and ran a generalist PR agency, Lawson Dodd (1992-2011).

Joanna then went on to set up Rochester PR Group in 2011, which specialises in helping international companies and brands with their market entry into the UK – with a particular focus on the tech, professional services, food & drink, and lifestyle sectors.

Joanna was a Trustee of The Clothworkers’ Foundation (2011-19) and a Trustee of Carers Trust (201925), the charity for unpaid carers.

Outside work, her interests include travel, film, and music. She has two grown-up daughters and lives in Kent.

Second Warden Colonel Alastair Mathewson OBE Alastair entered the Freedom in

2012 and joined the Court in 2017.

He chairs the Hall Working Group and the Collections and Archives Sub-Committee, and sits on several others as a result.

Educated in Scotland and at Oxford, he served in the Scots Guards for 30 years. He initiated The Company’s regimental and cadet affiliations before leaving the Army in 2012 to run a trust administering a Grade I historic house and its estate in the Home Counties. He now lives in Aberdeenshire with his wife, Susan.

In addition to his work for The Company, Alastair is secretary of a national wildlife conservation charity, a governor of the Radley Schools Group, a member of the Scots Guards Regimental Command Board, and an officer of The King’s Body Guard for Scotland, The Royal Company

Third Warden Mr Peter Jonas Peter was made Free in 1995, and joined the Livery in 2001. He is the son of Christopher Jonas (Master, 2007-08).

Peter graduated with a BA in Economics and Politics from the University of Strathclyde. Since University, he has been involved in equities sales and trading, specialising in North American stocks for more than 25 years and working for companies in both London and New York. He has been with William Blair and Co since 2014. Since 2017, Peter has been a Trustee at Hands On London (responsible for the annual Wrap Up London campaign) and Chair of the Board since January 2020.

Investment Committee, as well as the Risk and Audit and Budget SubCommittees.

Peter lives in London with his wife, Tanya, and two children. Outside of other commitments, he enjoys theatre, golf, cooking, and music of most genres, especially the reemergence of some of the bands he listened to in his youth.

Fourth Warden Mr Ian Maclean MBE Ian joined the Freedom in 2021, the Court in 2024, and is the Chair of the Textiles Sub-Committee – which has a budget of £1.8m per annum to support projects and institutions in the UK textiles sector.

Educated at Cambridge, Ian spent his early career at 3i plc, the private equity group. He then went to work in the USA for the retailer and family business, The Orvis Company Inc. Continuing there for

several more years, he managed the Orvis UK subsidiary.

In 2008, he became the nonexecutive Chair of his family company, John Smedley Ltd, the knitwear brand that manufactures all of its garments in Derbyshire.

In 2010, Ian moved into the role of Managing Director at John Smedley, where he remained until 2025. Ian is now the Executive Chair. In 2013, John Smedley was awarded its first Royal Warrant for fine knitwear supply to Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Most recently, the company was awarded a Royal Warrant by His Majesty King Charles III. Ian was appointed MBE in 2020 for his COVID pandemic response and services to the UK textile industry. In the past few years, Ian has worked across the wider textile industry through senior roles in UK Fashion Textiles (Director/ Treasurer) and The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (Trustee/Chair).

In 2025, Ian completed a term as President of the Sandringham Royal Warrant Holders Association.

Along with other family shareholders, Ian is proud to have helped John Smedley pass its 240th year in business. He lives in Nottingham with his wife and two children.

Court Assistants Mrs Katy Cornish Katy became a Clothworker in 2007 and was elected to the Livery in 2012. She currently serves on the Civic Engagement Committee, and was appointed to the Board of Trustees of The Clothworkers’ Foundation in March 2026.

Educated at Guildford High School and Nottingham University, Katy studied French and German. After her degree, she joined the Civil Service European Fast Stream – and started her career by saving the Jammie Dodger. Her career in the Civil Service focused on trade and

employment policy, with highlights including leading the Low Pay Commission and developing an insurance climate change accord in collaboration with two of the King’s charities.

After 15 years in government, Katy left to establish her own coaching and consulting business, supporting companies, charities, schools, and individuals. She has served as both a School Governor and Chair of Governors, and now consults for AGBIS, reviewing governance in independent schools.

Outside work, Katy enjoys padel tennis, hiking, reading, and coldwater swimming. She is married to Graham, and they have two children, Henry and Sophie. Katy is the daughter of the late Peter Langley (Court Assistant) and sister to James Langley (Fourth Warden, 2025-26).

Mr Harry Matovu KC Harry was admitted by Redemption

in 2022. A barrister and King’s Counsel at Brick Court Chambers, he is also the Founder and Chair of the Black Talent Charter and interested in issues of racial disadvantage (in particular, the need to improve the representation of talented black professionals in business, finance, and other professions).

In his day job, Harry is a leading Silk (KC) at the Commercial Bar with a substantial and high-profile practice, both domestically and abroad, acting as counsel and arbitrator for individuals, corporations, and states in banking, energy and natural resources, insurance/reinsurance, international law, and fraud claims.

Outside his day job, Harry’s passion for the arts and his work as a Trustee of Chichester Festival Theatre for 10 years, and currently as a Trustee of Somerset House and the Chineke!

Foundation, has confirmed his belief in the transformative power of the arts to change individual lives and to

He acts as a mentor for new trustees of arts organisations through RIAC UK, a network which matches professionals who wish to become trustees with arts and creative charities looking for new talent to fill those roles.

In addition to his roles as Chair of the Black Talent Charter and Trustee of Somerset House and the Chineke! Foundation, Harry is a Fellow (Governor) of Eton College, a member of the Enforcement Decision Making Committee (EDMC) of the Bank of England, a member of the Board of the International Chamber of Commerce UK, and an Honorary Doctor of Law (SOAS, University of London).

Harry has been recognised in the Powerlist 2026 for the sixth year in succession as one of the most influential Black professionals in the UK.

Livery Ms Lauren Asplin Lauren is currently the Head of Stakeholder Engagement at Imperial College London.

Previous roles were in consultancy and the charity sector.

Daughter of Nigel Asplin, Lauren is a seventh-generation Clothworker through her greatgrandmother, Amelia Mary Weldon (née Martin). The family connection began in 1832, when Edward Martin, son of a Lighterman, was apprenticed to James Colcomb, an ivory turner in Trinity Lane.

Mr Edward Brown Edward completed his BSc in Agricultural Business Management at Reading University in 2018. Since 2019, Edward has worked as an international agricultural and food consultant, with a particular

focus on livestock production systems, meat, and dairy. He is also a Partner in a mixed family farming business on the South Downs, where environmental delivery is a core objective.

A fourth-generation Clothworker, Edward is the son of Richard Brown (Livery Member), and greatgrandson of Walter Pothecary (Clerk to The Company, 1933-50, and Master, 1952-53).

Capt Lachlan de Klee ‘Lochy’ completed a first class honours degree in Earth Sciences at Newcastle University, where he was a member of both the Harrow Pipe Band and the Newcastle City Pipe Band. He is currently an officer in the Coldstream Guards.

A sixth-generation Clothworker, Lachlan is the son of Fiona Leslie (Freedom Member), and grandson of Alastair Leslie (Assistant Emeritus and Master, 1998-99).

Miss Sophie Forsyth Sophie graduated with a first class degree from the University of Sheffield in 2018, where she was studying Accounting and Financial Management. She is currently working for Westfield Specialty Insurance as a Financial Institutions Underwriter. Sophie started her insurance career at Markel International, where she had the opportunity to compete in (and win!) the Markel Magnolia Cup; an all-female charity horse race at Glorious Goodwood.

Daughter of Thomas Ingham Clark (Master, 2023-24), and granddaughter of R Alastair Ingham Clark (Master Excused Service, 1998-99), Emma is a seventhgeneration Clothworker. The family connection began in 1777, when James Fitch, a cheesemonger in Leadenhall Street, was apprenticed to Edward Whinnell.

Dipi became Free of The Company in 2022 (Redemption). She has worked in financial services for more than 25 years and is a strong advocate for social mobility. She was one of a small group of industry leaders who launched ‘Progress Together’ in 2022, an industry body focused on improving social mobility at senior levels within financial services. Chaired by the 693rd Lord Mayor of the City of London, Vincent Keaveny, CBE KStJ, Dipi now sits on the programme’s board.

In her spare time, she enjoys skiing, horse riding, netball, travelling, and cooking.

Miss Maria Lawrence

Sophie is the daughter of Fenella Forsyth (Livery Member), and granddaughter of John Horne (Master, 1992-93). She is a tenthgeneration Clothworker; the family connection dates back to 1753, when Thomas Horne (son of Benjamin, Merchant of the Parish of St Mary Magdalene Bermondsey), apprenticed to Edmund Smith, was made Free by Servitude and became a coal merchant by trade.

Maria earned a BA (Hons) in Media Studies from the University of Surrey in 2012. She is a marketing professional and currently works as a Senior Product Marketing Manager within the telecoms industry for a fibre broadband company. She also has experience working across other industries including insurance, financial services, and fashion. Outside of work, her interests include art, attending live music/theatre events, and charity work.

Miss Emma Ingham Clark Emma studied Politics and International Relations at the University of Cambridge. She now works as a Management Consultant

She graduated from the University of London (LLB Laws) and completed a MSc in Occupational Psychology at Birkbeck University.

Mr John Portal John graduated from Exeter University in June 2015, with a degree in Philosophy and Economics. Afterwards, he joined Aon as a graduate and now works at Howden, in the US Property team.

His interests include football, music, and enterprise.

A third-generation Clothworker, John is the son of Sir Jonathan Portal Bt (Master, 2019-20) and

grandson of Sir Francis Spencer Portal Bt (Master, 1970-71).

Miss Hannah Sweetapple Hannah works as the Senior Learning Officer at Amgueddfa Cymru: National Museum Cardiff. She has a Masters Degree in Museum Studies from the University of Leicester and a BA (Hons) in Ancient History from Cardiff University. She is currently undertaking a doctoral degree focusing on the effect of curriculum reform on Welsh Museums. Hannah’s main interests are museum and history. She is currently volunteering as a Wales Area Rep for the Group for Education in Museums (GEM). However, her hobbies also include ballroom and Latin dancing, crafting (especially embroidery and crochet), as well as

playing the guitar and violin.

Hannah is a fifth-generation Clothworker, and daughter of Christopher Sweetapple. The Sweetapple family connection with Clothworkers’ dates back to 1866, when Thomas George Sweetapple, son of John Sweetapple (a saddler in Islington), was apprenticed to Henry Howell (a packer in Mark Lane).

Mr David Ziyambi Having now worked in the City for nearly two decades, David is a Lawyer with Latham & Watkins (London) LLP. As a partner of the firm’s Finance Department and Vice Chair of the firm’s Africa Practice, he is focused primarily on project, structured, and leverage financing in the energy and

The Election Dinner, for Clothworkers only, allows us to welcome new Livery Members and celebrate the service of those ending their terms as Master and Warden, who pass the baton on to our soon-to-be Master and Wardens. It is also one of the only events where Members of the Court and Livery gather together on their own, without hosting external guests, to build and strengthen their bonds of Fellowship.

infrastructure sectors within both mature and developing markets (particularly in Africa). He is the co-founder and global leader of the company’s Black Lawyer Group.

Among a long list of achievements and awards, he has been listed on the EMpower 100 List at least four times (2020-2024), inducted into the Martin Luther King Jr. Board of Sponsors of Morehouse College (2023), and selected as a Law360 Rising Star (2021).

Outside of work, David serves as a trustee and volunteer in a variety of organisations. He is a Member of the Women’s Business Council (WBC), Director of International Lawyers for Africa, a Big Kid Foundation Trustee, and a Trustee of the Ex Fide Fiducia Trust.

TRIBUTES RICHARD JONES, MASTER (2002-2003)

1964, followed by Robert in 1966 and Bridget in 1969. Also in 1969, the family moved to Boughspring, in Buckinghamshire, and an apricot standard poodle puppy (called ‘Tufty’) became the sixth member of the family.

Assistant Emeritus Antony Jones delivered a tribute to the Court for his brother, Past Master Richard Jones, who died, age 89, in February 2026. An excerpt of that tribute is printed below: Richard Harding Jones was born in London on 4 June 1936. The eldest son of Sir Henry Jones G.B.E. (Master, 1972-73) and brother to Johnny (Free, 1962; Master, 200506), Priscilla (Free, 1963) and me (Free, 1967).

As I was born 10 years after Richard, my early memories of him are few and fragmented, and his early years depend on stories as told by my siblings. Unlike Richard, I had no experience of US Bombers taking off from nearby Stansted nor of incoming bombing raids, Doodlebugs or sheltering under the kitchen table. Nor did I have to wonder who the strange man was walking up to the house in Autumn 1945 after three and a half years in Burma.

By the time I went to prep school, Richard was close to leaving Harrow and heading for National Service. He spent two years with the Royal Scots Greys, acquiring an encyclopaedic knowledge of Catterick, Barnard Castle and the

surrounding area.

After National Service, he joined the English Electric Company, heading to Liverpool on his Royal Enfield RE125 motorcycle. He did a ‘sandwich course’ (probably sponsored by English Electric) at Cranfield University, as it is now called.

Richard was always the engineer, whether building and flying model aeroplanes or assembling and disassembling bubble cars, ordinary cars, the motorbike or the family camper van.

1962 was a pivotal year for Richard.

He became a Livery Member of The Company, having joined the Freedom the previous year. He married Penny in Cambridge; departing the reception by punt propelled by Penny’s brother, Ian, and heading up the Cam towards Grantchester. He was then intercepted by me, with a set of wheels, for onward transport.

His son, Christopher, was born in

Of course, Richard had to earn a living, and he seems to have impressed and excelled with English Electric and successor companies in the heavy engineering field.

His particular strengths were an engineer’s understanding of the product, complemented by people skills and earning the trust of longterm customers.

At home, Bridget recalls a charmed childhood, often spent at the local cricket club watching ‘Dad’ in his whites and helping ‘Mum’ make loaves of sandwiches and plenty of cake. Robert also recalls part of his introduction to club cricket was scoring, and dreading when ‘Dad’ went in to bat: ‘I was never happy having to write his wicket into the book’.

Sadly, Penny died in 1997. Richard later married Barbara, and she was his consort during his time as Master.

In July 1993, Richard was elected to the Court of Assistants, and was active across a range of activities and committees, and eventually serving

University of Leeds received a major grant to meet the cost of renovating its Centenary Concert Hall.

The Company introduced new software, a membership database and a new website.

A small group, including Richard, worked on a strategic review of membership and governance.

Partly funded by our £1.2 million grant, the Centre for Reconciliation and Peace opened in the rebuilt St Ethelburga’s Church.

In 2003, The Company’s affiliate, HMS Marlborough, was deployed in the North Arabian Gulf to help enforce the Security Council’s trade embargo; intercepting a cargo dhow smuggling 300 tons of oil out of Iraq and challenging many others. Upon declaration of war and Allied assault, Marlborough provided accurate naval gunfire

supporting the Royal Marines advance into Iraq.

Assistant Emeritus in July 2011, Richard retained a keen interest in Clothworkers’ activities.

Richard will be remembered as a committed family man, interested in people and a good story. Always ready to help and support others.

Richard’s son, Robert, and daughter, Bridget, are Livery Members.

Sun, 21 Jun (11.00am - 1.00pm) – The Restoration Stone 75th Anniversary. In June 1951, King Haakon VII of Norway laid the stone that began the post-war restoration of the church. Holy communion will be sung by The St Olave Scholars and the Nidaros Cathedral Boys’ Choir (Norway).

Tues, 14 Jul (5.30pm) – Choral Evensong with Reception for The Prayer Book Society (the final choral evensong at the church before its summer break). Music will include compositions from the time of Samuel Pepys, whose prayer book will be on display.
