One of my finds of the year, I was blown away by this Blanc de Blancs English fizz, mistaking it for a top tie r BdB from Champag ne. Notes of g ree n apple, white f lowe rs, le mon tar t, and a lovely chalkiness make for an ef for tless glass with real finesse. For £36 this is an absolute knockout; I always have a ca se in the hou se.
Domaine Ev remond, Edition I

Launched earlie r this year, Domaine Evre mond is Champag ne Taittinge r ’s first English sparkling wine, made down in Corsham, Ke nt, on beds of white chalk. Edition I is the ve r y special first release and it is outstanding fizz; wonde r fully ope n with exe mplar y freshness and a se nsuous mousse. One of the best wines made in the UK.

Gosset’s Rése r ve Br ut scored r ight at the top e nd of the list at our blind champag ne tasting in June, thanks to its wonde rful dr y st yle, with no malolactic fe r me ntation and ve r y low dosage to kee p it fresh and mouthwate r ing. This mult i-vintage wine beats most other Grand Marques hand s down and is the ideal fizz for a special occasion.

Produced f rom a ble nd of Pinot Blanc, Ge wurztramine r, Riesling, Pinot Gr is and Sauvig non Gr is this is a kaleidoscope of exotic f lavours. Passionf r uit, lime, bay leaf, pear, Turkish delight, lychee & rose wate r. For ju st £20 a bot tle is g ives so much vinou s joy.

One of the finest wines I tr ied in 2025, Sanford’s ‘La Riconada’ Chardonnay is mind-be ndingly exciting, with r ipe yuzu, golde n apple, f lorals & lime zest. This is a mag nifice nt Dolcetto from a famous wine making family, with a heady pe r fume of black che r r y, balsamic, wild strawbe r r y, blood orange, rosehip, white pe ppe r and f lecks of violet. On the palate it is beg uiling, with a se nsuous mouthfeel and sof t tannins. This is such an elegant wine and the f inish la sts for se veral minutes.

This is a br illiant wine which showcases the ve r y best of what Pe mbe r ton in Weste r n Australia can of fe r. The re are heady aromas of r ipe che r r y, dark plum, and hints of cedar and spice. The palate is velvet y and smooth, with cr ushed red be r r ies, ear thy unde r tones, and a touch of vanilla from ag ing in Fre nch oak foudres. Exquisite.

Tasting this last month with Lar r y Che r ubino was a re velation. ‘Uovo’ comes f rom the ovoid tanks known as eg gs in which the wine lees are continuously forced upward by an inte r nal cur re nt. This gives voluptuousness, pur it y & texture, alongside juic y blackcur rant, redcur rant & bay leaf, and it is consistently light, clean & f resh.

Similar to Italian nebbiolo, Greek Xinomavro is having a mome nt. This supe r of fe r ing from an organically cultivated vine yard located at altitude on the easte r n slopes of Mount Cholomon is just a shor t distance f rom the Aegean Sea. Expressive & complex with che r r y, blackbe r r y, s weet spice & vegetal notes, this is opulent stuf f.

I adore this wine, which is full, de nse and velvet y with f latte r ing oak spice. The Rese r va is dee p in colour, pe rfumed, and full of ge ne rosit y and spice. Per fect with beef & game.

A kaleidoscopic palate gives bite & punch, with r ipe, red fr uit. With supe rb str ucture & pe rsiste nce, this is Chambolle-Mu sig ny-beat ing for a quarter of the pr ice.

This is a dee ply aromatic 20 YO Tawny from Vallado, aged in ve r y old 600 litre oak casks. I think that aged Tawny por t is the pe rfect digestif for Chr istmas, freshe r & more complex than red por ts and with a delightful oxidative note which g ives nutt y aromas. I kee p my bottle in the f r idge and it goes per fectly with mince pies or stollen!
