I am pleased to offer the first good value release of the Bordeaux 2024 en primeur campaign and a consistent Pauillac performer, Château Batailley, released 7.4% down on the 2023 release price.
6x75cl - £150
12x75cl - £300
6x150cl - £320
1x300 - £136 -
100 year anniversary, 1x225cl Marie-Jeanne - £100 all in bond
Château Batailley is the first release of the 2024 Bordeaux campaign that merits attention. A wine that I marked out upon tasting in Bordeaux as one of the rare successes of a difficult vintage, Batailley manages to deliver blue and black fruits around a pleasingly coherent mineral structure, showing much better than many of its much more expensive neighbours.
Pricing was always going to be the key driver in the 2024 campaign and so whilst a 7.4% decrease does not look enormous on paper, for a wine at this hugely accessible price there is only so much the property can drop by.
Most alluring is that this release price is the cheapest in ten years, since the 2014 vintage, and for that reason I recommend it to lovers of Pauillac wines. This is eminently not an ‘investable wine’, but it will deliver much pleasure to those who drink it. The special Marie-Jeanne bottle (pictured left) to celebrate 100 years of the Borie family’s ownership is very appealing, having seen it in person.
Jane Anson shared my positive thoughts on the wine, awarding it 93 points, writing, “Fragrant, floral, precise, with graphite & crayon character that is immediately apparent on the nose. Very much captures the appellation & estate signature, with real classicism and balance, depth through the mid palate and slim, savoury blue and black fruits. Well-constructed & no question that this can age”.
