VINTAGE REPORT

The f irst thing to say about the 2022 v intage in Burg undy is that it allowed w inemakers to breathe a sigh of relief for perhaps the f irst time in t wo years. A f ter the crippling frosts of 2021 which saw y ields plummet and prices sk y rocket, 2022 was straightfor ward, simple and, whisper it, easy.

Mother nature has a way of reacting to adversit y and whilst v ines across Europe have in recent years adapted well to rising temperatures, the natural inclination of hardy v ines to do any thing to sur v ive, despite their recent experience, is remarkable. W hen considering the chronolog y of a par ticular v intage, it pays f irst to look back toward its predecessor. In this case the frost-bitten, knackered v ines of 2021 knew they had a job to do in 2022 to stay alive, which meant they prepared to produce more fr uit to do just that.

A milder w inter leading into early 2022 meant that there was little in the way of serious frost risk and so budburst and f lowering occurred earlier than usual, w ith v ines unf urling quickly across the region. The largely uninterr upted period of f lowering meant that for the f irst time in years there would be a bountif ul, homogenous crop: a v igneron’s dream.

In June of 2022 the continuing warm and dr y conditions led to concern amongst w inemakers, w ith a drop off in water levels against the average by more than 40% . Those who did a rain dance to save the crop were rewarded w ith ex traordinar y thunderstorms for four long days at the end of the month, almost as high as 100mm of rain in some places. The results were biblical, w ith f loods in some par ts of the Côte d’Or leav ing v ines submerged, topsoils eroded and root systems exposed, all w ithin a matter of minutes. In these hardest hit areas, some v ignerons resor ted to literally mov ing tons of soil around to soak up the water and protect the v ines. www.closfinewine.com

Follow ing the deluge, conditions remained warm and dr y until har vest and, cr ucially, there was welcome relief for the v ines in the evenings, when high temperatures abated, allow ing the v ines to recover and retain acidit y and freshness: this diurnal range was key in making the plush, f ulsome w ines w ith excellent acidit y which def ine this superb v intage. Har vest took place towards the end of Aug ust and varied in leng th and scope dependent on the lieu dits and var y ing soil t y pes, but in all cases was carried out in per fect conditions, w ith fr uit of ten chilled on its way to, or at, the w iner y, to maintain that key freshness.

As is becoming the norm w ith greater investment and exper tise in the w ineries, v inif ication was of ten done w ith a light touch, w ith an emphasis on gentleness and maintaining acid levels across both the whites and the reds, w ith much success.

So how does Burg undy 2022 rate? For me it’s the most joy I’ve had tasting a Burg undy v intage since I joined the w ine trade. I was astonished and delighted in equal par ts by whites w ith gorgeous voluptuous tex tures that didn’t scrimp on freshness, and by reds which were ripe and plush but of ten had a laser-like focus and freshness to them. In what is naturally a hierarchical system, w ith its v illage, premier cr u and then grand cr u w ines, it is a real treat for w ine lovers that there is supreme qualit y across the board. I tried v illage w ines like Fixins or Mercureys which have str uggled in recent v intages but were allowed to shine in 2022 . The premier cr us are some of the best I have ever tasted, par ticularly for me the whites of Puligny & Chassagne Montrachet, and the reds of Gev rey- Chamber tin and Nuits-Saint- Georges.

Finally, the Grand Cr us stood up and were counted in 2022 , delivering handsomely in their role as leading lights of the region: several times during tastings I needed to be rescued from a trance-like state as I w rapped my head around these ex traordinar y w ines.

Burgundy ha s been a bit of a playboy’s paradise in recent vintages with small product ion le vels and nosebleed-inducing pr ices, but 2022 resets the board , deliver ing quite ext raordinar y wines at e ver y pr ice point. My adv ice is simple, if you can af ford to stock up on a Burg undy v intage, this is the one: don’t miss out!

Always one of my top picks in terms of outright value, at £28 a bottle, the nose is full of white blossom, resin, yuzu lemon, green apple, white peach, acacia, candle wax. The elegant aromas continue onto a very well-structured palate with tension between spice & acidity on the finish. Very good indeed.

Maison Louis Jadot is considered to have one of the f inest w inemaking reputations across Burg undy. Founded in 1859 & ow ning over 60 hectares of v ineyard in the region, the Domaines are r un by Pierre-Henri Gagey, assisted by Jacques Lardière, one of the most respected head w inemakers working in Burg undy today. Lardière’s philosophy is one of minimal inter vention, in both the v ineyard & the w iner y, generating w ines which display fresh fr uit and natural mineralit y.

I adore this Meursault and its one of my go-to wines each year, with its nose of nougat, white chocolate, almond, resin, white peach, lemon peel and acacia. There is spectacular structure to this wine in 2022, with hedonistic notes of yuzu lemon, mandarin oil and hazelnut. Richly profiled, the finish is full of flavour & acidity: a must for Meursault lovers.

Meursault 1er Cru ‘Les Charmes’ £230 per 3 bottles in Bond

Pre-eminent w ine critic Rober t Parker said of the Domaines “one can be almost ce r tain that a Jadot wine f rom Burgundy, f rom whate ve r par t of their e nor mou s spectr um of wines, including those of villages le vel, will possess clar it y of f lavour and a site-specif ic distinction.”

The 2022 w ines are perhaps the f inest I have ever tasted from Jadot and come w ith my strongest possible recommendation.

Domaine duc de Magenta, Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Les Folatières’ £295 per 3 bottles in Bond The Folatières climat lies near the slope summit in Puligny-Montrachet, roughly halfway between Meursault and Le Montrachet – talk about glamorous neighbours! Folatières delivers again in 2022 on its perennial promise of delicacy & finesse. The nose of lemon thyme, acacia, quince, white peach & crushed rock gives way to a sensuous mouthfeel of ripe fruit and a long lived, floral hued finish. This is such a special wine.

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Le Cailleret’ £368 per 3 bottles in Bond

Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru

For the price, this is a total knockout of a Puligny, with a kaleidoscopic nose of golden apple, baked lemon, and a bevy of floral hues, from acacia to chamomile, plus a crushed stone element, providing a mineral lift.

On the palate this is remarkably crisp & taught, cerebral, even and has a beguilingly sensuous finish. Tremendous.

It’s hard not to get starry eyed when tasting a Bâtard Montrachet: I needed smelling salts after this one to wake up from what felt like a glorious dream. An incredibly rich & kaleidoscopic nose of honeysuckle, toast, crushed rock, white peach, mirabelles, mandarin oil, nougat & dried vanilla pod. Exceptionally structured with mouth-watering acidity this will take pride of place in any white burgundy lover’s cellar.

Chevalier Montrachet Grand Cru ‘Les Demoiselles’ £1,690 per 3 bottles in Bond

Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Les Chenevottes’ £205 per 3 bottles in Bond A wine I buy in most years, it always delivers, with acacia, honeysuckle, beeswax and Jersey cream, offset with intense yellow plum and yuzu. What I love most about this tremendous white Burgundy is that it manages to feel simultaneously voluptuous & full of zing at the same time, the tale of the vintage really. The finish is long & refined. Wow.

Situated just above Le Montrachet, I visited this lieu dit and was astonished at just how small it is, with Jadot only owning half a hectare of vines. At first mineral and waxy, floral notes of white blossom and chamomile percolate with aeration before hints of lemon oil, hazelnut, almond and baked apricots make an appearance. Unsurprisingly the structure is very assured in spite of its seemingly massive scale. This is a regal wine.

Domaine Héritiers, Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru £655 per 3 bottles in Bond

Domaine Héritiers, Le Montrachet Grand Cru

Burgundy critic Jasper Morris was bowled over by this Grand Cru, writing “no reason why this should not be an excellent wine… This fills the palate beautifully, a little citrus, enough white fruit flesh & then a long stony finish. Absolutely what it should be, & in 2022 something more”. I can’t add much more save to say that at this price this is one of the deals of the campaign.

Goosebump-inducing liquid for white burgundy lovers.

From the most Kingly of blue-blooded sites & Mecca for white burgundy lovers, this Grand Cru does everything it says on the tin, from its generous, rich aromatics which encapsulate baked lemon, golden apple, white plums, lightly buttered toast, a light creamy element, almond and resin. The balance & freshness here is stunning, cutting through the weight with ease for a profoundly persistent finish. Magisterial.

Famille Gagey, Beaune 1er Cru, Clos des Ursules, Monopole £355 per 6 bottles in Bond From this 2.15 hectare enclave, a jewel of the Jadot portfolio, ripe red cherries, strawberries, blood orange, red plum, orange pith, iris petal, wild mint and liquorice. Supple, cashmere soft tannins on the palate, bags of acidity, super structure and a long, vibrant finish which persists. This is one of the brilliant value wines of the vintage.

Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru, Clos Saint Jacques £510 per 3 bottles in Bond Considered one of the two finest 1er Crus of Gevrey, this is very close to that of the great ‘Le Chambertin’.

An intoxicating, hedonistic nose of red berries, plums, damson, five spice, cassis, orange zest and vine smoke.

On the palate it is knitted together exceptionally well, giving full-bodied complexity and with a structure of extreme refinement & breed.

Corton Pougets Grand Cru £560 per 6 bottles in Bond

Les Pougets comprises two parcels covering 9.7 hectares in the mid-slope adjacent to Le Charlemagne, on chalk and iron rich marl soils. The nose is kaleidoscopic, with fig, dark plum, raspberry coulis, dark cherry, and sous bois, with flecks of rose petal and smoke. The structure is imbued with tension, between tannins and acidity, giving excitement that persists across a seductive finish. Wonderful.

I was beguiled by this staggering Grand Cru and its nose of rose petals, lavender, cherries, spices and espresso. Over a few minutes of aeration in the glass it unfurled further with ripe berries and flecks of smoke. The structure is so confident, with wonderful mouth-filling tannins set against zingy acidity, in perfect balance.

Neal Martin called this “an excellent Echezeaux” and I agree.

Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru

The walled ‘clos’ of Saint-Denis sits nestled between other famous Grand Crus sites in Morey-Saint-Denis. There is real density on the nose, with intense red cherries & plums intermingling with bramble fruits.

The fruit is ripe and fresh without ever straying into ‘overripe’ territory. The tannic structure is great belied by immense freshness and acidity. This will surely age into one of the wines of the vintage. Magnificent.

Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

An incredible perfume of red cherries, boysenberry, mulberry, spiced plums, blood orange, smoked meat, iodine, touches of truffle mocha and new leather. This Grand Cru is silky on the palate with ripe, supple tannins, seductive floral & fruit notes, and an intoxicating, long finish. Superb.

One of the most sought-after lieu dits each year, the 2022 Bonnes Mares is seductive on the nose, with wild strawberry, red cherries, blueberries, blood orange, violet & iris petal. Medium-bodied, it wears its mineral-driven structure lightly, supple tannins intertwine with a perfectly judged line of acidity for a seemingly endless finish which never once feels too big. In Neal Martin’s words ‘superb’ & a must buy.

Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru £695 per 3 bottles in Bond

Famille Gagey, Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru £1,800 per 3 bottles in Bond

Cleaner and more mineral on the nose than the Charmes Chambertin, there are opulent red berries, spiced plums, violet petals, blood orange, bramble fruit, wild mint, sage and chalk. On the palate this is clearly built for ageing, but it is already showing fabulously and very well knitted together. Supple, cashmere-soft tannins give just a hint of grip and the finish is longlived. Very good indeed.

Over a third of this vineyard was planted over 100 years ago. The nose is hedonistic, with wild strawberry, boysenberry, red cherry, plums, damson, orange pith, rose petal, iodine, mocha. A regal palate, with mineral-driven structure & finesse that you only find in the very best red burgundies. The finish is utterly beguiling, persisting for minutes & enticing you to taste more.

This is one of the wines of the 2022 vintage.

The largest of the Côte Chalaonnaise’s appellations, Mercurey’s clay & limestone soils impart distinctive mineral freshness to its wines. This fully organic Mercurey shows elegant, ripe pear, apple & white flower on the nose, fine mineral structure and fatness on the palate, and mouthwatering acidity. Stunning for just £24.50 a bottle, in bond.

The Bichot family has had its roots in Burg undy since 1350 and the company was off icially established in 1831 by Bernard Bichot before being more f ully developed by his grandson, A lber t Bichot. A lberic Bichot is now the President of the Domaines, developing the company ’s commitment to biody namic v iticulture which best lets the fr uit express the unique terroirs of the region. With over 100 hectares of v ines in the region across six Domaines, all sites in the Côte d’Or are cer tif ied as organic and the Domaines has been awarded ‘Winemaker of the Year’ countless times at International level.

The name of this appellation refers to Roman times when the village was renowned for its thermal baths and its natural spring, “Santinae aquae”, meaning “healing water” in Latin. Accacia, baked lemon & flecks of apricot dominate the nose, leading to a rich palate which maintians minerality & salinity on a juicy & refreshing finish. Very good.

Santenay Villages £170 per 6 bottles in Bond

Striking in tasting the 2022 stable of w ines was the incredible purit y of fr uit and freshness in both the whites and the reds. These are wonder f ul w ines, f it for any cellar.

Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Cru ‘Clos Reyssié’ £190 per 6 bottles in Bond Pouilly-Fuissé in the Mâconnais has long made standout white wines for a fraction of the cost of the Côte de Beaune. The walled vineyard of ‘Clos Reyssié’ on limestone gives flint smoke on the nose, which all great Pouilly-Fuissés have, giving way to white flowers, yuzu lemon & white peach. On the palate this is utterly sumptuous for just £31 a bottle in bond, with generous mouthfeel & delightful acidity on the finish.

Chablis 1er Cru ‘Fourchaume’ £160 per 6 bottles in Bond Sought after by Chablis lovers for its close proximity & very similar soil to the Grand Cru sites, Fourchaume offers buyers excellent value for money. I adored the white orchard fruit, zest and rock pool notes of this 1er Cru Chablis, so inviting & fresh, but with a palate of real strucure & density. The finish was one of the longest I’ve experienced from this site. Superb.

Domaine Long-Depaquit, Chablis Grand Cru ‘Les Clos’ £390 per 6 bottles in Bond Jasper Morris put it best when he wrote in his definitive book Inside Burgundy “The first vineyard to be planted by the monks, who usually had a good eye for the best spots, most experts have since declared Les Clos the first among its peers.” A nose of yellow plum, wet stone, baked bread & pressed white flowers is utterly beguiling and the salintiy and tension on the palate is magical.

This is a knockout in 2022.

Domaine du Pavillon, Beaune 1er Cru ‘Clos des Mouches’ £558 per 6 bottles in Bond From a tiny 0.75 hectare plot, Bichot makes excellent 1er Cru Beaune blanc here each vintage and in 2022 they have excelled themselves. Still somehow flying under white Burgundy lovers’ radars, Beaune 1er Crus like this offer exceptional drinking for the price. Here accacia, yellow flowers & orangeblossom give way to quince, apple, resin & white chocolate. Fantastic.

Fixin Rouge £150 per 6 bottles in Bond Fixin neighbours Gevrey-Chambertin and is one of many vinous bargains to be found in the region: indeed it is a bit of a trade secret and a wine all of us tend to buy ourselves! A perfume of black & red fruits, as well as rich damson give way to rock solid structure on the palate, with grippy tannins and a long, mouthwatering finish, with excellent tension & a touch of menthol.

Domaine du Pavillon, Pommard ‘Clos des Ursulines’ Monopole £270 per 6 bottles in Bond A sought-after appellation in Burgundy, Pommard has in recent years produced wines with more refined tannins than the past, without losing density of fruit. This monopole owned by Bichot has made a charming 2022, with a nose of crushed blueberries, blackberries, black cherries & a hint of wild mint. With flecks of black olive & cassis on the palate & a clear mineral core, this is a fabulous Pommard that doesn’t break the bank.

Domaine du Pavillon, Volnay 1er Cru ‘Les Santenots’ £325 per 6 bottles in Bond

As 1er Cru red burgundies go, Bichot’s Volnay ‘Santenots’ is a knockout for the price in 2022, especially when set against eye-watering price from other producers. Elegant notes of raspberry & pomegranate are underpinned by a precise, oyster-shell minerality.

Kirsch, orange peel and liquorice mingle with crushed red fruits and culminate in a gentle, caressing finish for this famous 1er Cru. A must buy.

Château Gris, Nuits-Saints-Georges 1er Cru Monopole £385 per 6 bottles in Bond This is a Nuits-Saints-Georges I have been following for five years now & the value continues to be astonishing for a 1er Cru monopole. To top it off, I think this is the best vintage of this wine I’ve tasted: I was entranced by it. A nose of black cherries, boysenberry, menthol, black olive & tobacco box gave way to a deep, enveloping palate with touches of moss & espresso. Supremely elegant with a long, opulent finish, this is a must buy.

Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru ‘Les Sorbets’ £440 per 6 bottles in Bond At the London Albert Bichot tasting, this was one of the standout wines and at £73 a bottle is excellent value when set against comparable producers’ offerings. A nose of wild strawberries, cassis & iris petal with touches of sous bois percolate with aeration before ripe, fresh fruit & confident structure on the palate, with peel, pressed flowers persisting on a mouth-watering finish. Utterly superb.

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru ‘Les Chabiots’ £762 per 6 bottles in Bond ‘Les Chabiots’ is a knockout Chambolle-Musigny in 2022, tasting better than the oft exceptional ‘Les Amoureuses’ but at half the price! As is typical for this lieu dit, the nose is a kaleidoscopic, hedonistic smorgasbord of pressed lavender & violet, blood orange, bilberry, cranberry, red cherry & wild mint. The palate is sensuous. The Clos Fine Wine en pr imeur exper ience A ll of the w ines contained in this Burg undy 2022 document are offered en primeur, that is to say that they are currently still in barrel. They w ill be ready for deliver y to the UK in 2025 which we w ill arrange.

A ll w ines w ill be shipped directly to London Cit y Bond to be stored under bond on your behalf, or you may request that the w ines are delivered to you, which we can arrange at cost.

W hen a w ine is removed from bonded storage, dut y and VAT w ill be payable on the value of the w ine and w ill be billed to you.

We w ill only ever offer w ines to our clients which we would buy for ourselves. Wines must represent excellent value for money (considering the prevailing market).
