n just a few short years, Leo Woodall has gone from an aspiring actor fresh out of drama school to one of the most talked-about rising stars in Hollywood. With his piercing blue eyes, effortless charm, and undeniable screen presence, Woodall has quickly made a name for himself in both television and film. From his breakout role in HBO’s The White Lotus to his heart-wrenching turn as Dexter Mayhew in Netflix’s One Day, he’s proving to be one of the most exciting actors of his generation.

Leo Woodall grew up surrounded by actors—his father, Andrew Woodall, and grandmother were both in the industry. Yet, despite his artistic lineage, he didn’t initially see himself following in their footsteps. “I wanted to be a stuntman, a footballer, or an adventurer,” he laughs.

“Acting wasn’t on my radar at all.” That all changed when, at 19, he watched Peaky Blinders and had a revelation. “I saw Cillian Murphy in Peaky Blinders and thought, ‘That’s what I want to do. I want to make people feel something the way he does.’” Inspired, he enrolled at the prestigious Arts Educational School (ArtsEd), graduating in 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts in Acting. Despite his relatively late start, Woodall quickly developed a passion for the craft. “Once I got into it, I was hooked,” he says. “There’s something about stepping into someone else’s shoes, experiencing their world, that is just exhilarating.” He spent his time at ArtsEd honing his skills, taking on challenging roles that pushed his emotional and physical boundaries. “I learned a lot about vulnerability and presence—two things I think are essential for any actor.”

His time at ArtsEd wasn’t just about learning lines and blocking scenes; it was about pushing himself out of his comfort zone. “In acting, you have to be willing to fail and fail big,” Woodall says. “You need to trust that failure can lead to something extraordinary.” His journey wasn’t an easy one, and he often faced self-doubt, a sentiment many young actors can relate to. “There were moments where I thought, ‘Am I good enough for this?’ But that’s part of the process. Doubt is natural in this industry. You just have to push through it.”

Woodall made his television debut with a guest role on BBC One’s Holby City in 2019, but it wasn’t long before bigger opportunities came knocking. He landed a role in the feature film Cherry, directed by the Russo brothers, starring opposite Tom Holland. “I remember stepping onto that set and thinking, ‘Wow, this is the big leagues,’” he recalls.

However, it was his role as the roguish yet vulnerable Jack in The White Lotus Season 2 that catapulted him into the spotlight. The show, set against the stunning backdrop

of Sicily, introduced Woodall to a global audience, and he held his own alongside industry heavyweights like Jennifer Coolidge and Aubrey Plaza.

“I was in shock when I got the call,” he admits. “I’d been a fan of the show and suddenly I was part of it. Jack was such a complex character—on the surface, he’s this cheeky Essex lad, but there’s so much going on beneath.” To prepare for the role, Woodall studied clips of reality TV star Joey Essex to perfect the accent and mannerisms. “I wanted to make sure I got it right because authenticity is everything.” His performance was met with widespread praise, and the cast took home the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series in 2023.

“It was surreal,” Woodall says. “To be recognised like that, especially so early in my career, was just incredible.” The experience of filming in Sicily was also a personal highlight.

“We were living in this paradise, filming at these incredible locations. It felt like a dream, but it was also a challenge because Jack is dealing with a lot of internal struggles.

Balancing that with the luxury around us was an interesting dynamic.”

man navigating love and loss over two decades. Starring alongside Ambika Mod, Woodall brought depth and vulnerability to the character, making audiences fall in love with him—even when Dexter wasn’t always easy to love. “It was such an emotional journey,” Woodall reflects. “Dexter is someone who struggles with fame, addiction, and loss, but at his core, he just wants to be loved. That’s what drew me to him.” The show’s tragic ending left viewers in tears, and Woodall admits it hit him just as hard. “Reading that final episode for the first time... it really took my breath away.”

Critics raved about his performance, with IndieWire calling him “a tornado of charisma” and praising his ability to capture Dexter’s highs and lows. Filming One Day was an intense experience, requiring Woodall to embody Dexter from his carefree twenties to his more turbulent thirties.

“There were days when I would go from playing young, energetic Dex to older, broken Dex, and it was a real challenge to shift between those mindsets,” he explains.

“But I loved every second of it. Playing a character over such a long span of time is rare, and it was a privilege.” He also mentioned how the love story between Dexter and Emma felt timeless, “The core of the story is universal—two people growing up, falling in and out of love, and finding their way in life. It’s the kind of story that resonates with anyone, no matter where they are in their journey.”

Woodall is quick to acknowledge that his success isn’t just about his talent but also about the incredible people he’s worked with.

He emphasizes the importance of ensemble casts, particularly in projects like The White Lotus. “What I love about ensemble shows is how much you learn from your co-stars. You’re all in it together, and that energy on set is contagious. I’m lucky to have been surrounded by such amazing actors, all of whom have had a huge impact on me as an artist.” Jennifer Coolidge, in particular, left a lasting impression on Woodall. “She’s a legend. Watching her work was a masterclass in itself. Jennifer is so fearless in her approach to comedy and drama. She taught me the importance of bringing your whole self to the character and having fun with it.”

I want to make people feel something the way he does.’”

What’s fascinating about Woodall’s rise is not just the roles he’s taking on but how they’re resonating with a global audience. With streaming platforms like Netflix, The White Lotus and One Day have found fans from every corner of the world, making Woodall a name known not just in Hollywood, but internationally. Woodall is aware of the growing fan base and the impact of streaming on the entertainment industry.

“It’s amazing. The world has become so interconnected through platforms like Netflix and HBO Max. The fact that people across the globe are watching and connecting with the shows I’m in—it’s humbling. I think this new era of entertainment is giving actors more opportunities to reach broader audiences than ever before.”

If The White Lotus made him a star, One Day cemented his status as a leading man. The Netflix adaptation of David Nicholls’ beloved novel saw Woodall take on the role of Dexter Mayhew, a charming but deeply flawed

In 2025, he’s set to star in Apple TV+’s thriller Prime Target, playing a brilliant but troubled mathematician named Edward Brooks. He’s also stepping into the world of Bridget Jones, starring alongside Renée Zellweger in Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy as Roxster McDuff, a charming younger love interest. “I feel so lucky to be working with people I’ve admired for years,” he says. “Every project teaches me something new, and I just want to keep pushing myself as an actor.”

Beyond his upcoming projects, Woodall has his sights set on expanding his creative repertoire. “I’d love to do a period drama, something like Peaky Blinders—funny, considering that’s what got me into acting in the first place,” he grins.

“And maybe even direct one day. I think storytelling is such a powerful thing, and I want to be involved in as many aspects of it as I can.” As for what drives him to keep pushing himself in an industry known for its ups and downs, Woodall is clear: “I think what excites me is the opportunity to keep evolving. Each character is an opportunity to discover something new about myself. You’re always learning, and that’s what keeps me coming back for more.”

As he continues to ascend in the industry, Woodall remains grounded and focused on his craft. “At the end of the day, it’s not about the fame or the awards. It’s about the work—the journey of becoming better, of telling stories that move people.”

Loving someone with Mental Health Challenges.

Hello you lovely bunch and welcome to this month’s column. Last month, I spoke about making a decision about what’s important to you.

Looking at relationship sacrifices and life goals and determining what your hard will be – a life without biological children, or potentially a life without love. This month, I want to talk about the reality of loving someone with mental health challenges.

patience, communication and a whole lot of heart.”

At the best of times, relationships are hard work. They take a level of commitment from both people and a genuine understanding that we are all beautiful and different and we should embrace one another as we are. When you add mental health challenges into the mix, your hard just became harder. Whether it’s anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder or mood related conditions like Cyclothymia, being in love with someone who struggles with their mental health requires patience, communication and a whole lot of heart.

Ultimately, loving someone with mental health problems, could adversely impact your old mental health. But it’s not all bad! From my experience with loved ones suffering from mental health challenges, the highs are some of the best I’ve had, you learn so much about what empathy truly is, you strengthen your resilience and it’s so rewarding to see how you’re positively impacting those who cannot always help themselves.

No relationship is perfect and when you throw mental health into the mix when you don’t have knowledge or experience with dealing with it, it becomes all the more difficult.

So, let’s dig into it a little. Here’s what you need to know about loving someone with mental health challenges whilst protecting your own emotional wellbeing.

1. Improve your understanding of mental health in YOUR relationship I want to start by saying, having mental health challenges does not make you unlovable. In my experience, those who suffer with mental health are more real, more human, more attuned to their emotions and it breaks my heart to hear beautiful humans say they feel like a burden on others.

The reality is, mental health adds an element of unpredictability to relationships which is outside of everyone’s control. There will be days when you couldn’t feel any more loved, and other days when you may feel your partner withdrawing because they’re losing a battle with their own thoughts. By tuning into what your partner is going through will be a game-changer for your relationship.

At first, the ups and downs, especially when you’re not familiar, can be highly upsetting, confusing and could trigger feelings of abandonment and neglect for those who already suffer with anxious attachment. If you take the time to understand the condition that your loved one is suffering with, this will help you to handle those emotional changes in a better way and will positively impact your mental health. What are the symptoms?

What triggers their low points? What does a manic episode look like and how can you support them? How do they experience love and support when they’re struggling? By understanding them, knowledge allows you to be compassionate and to take action.

4. Be patient and compassionate Healing is not linear and bad days will happen.

Compassion bridges the gap between frustration and connection and again, separating the person from the condition will help you to provide this effectively.

Being patient is the kindest gift you can give them.

Their behaviour doesn’t reflect their feelings towards you, a rejection of your efforts during a bad episode is not a rejection of your love, being moody is not them turning their backs on you.

Distinguishing between the person and the condition allows you to respond with patience instead of frustration. But this does take time. So, both of you will need patience to adjust.

However; it’s their responsibility to help themselves not to rely on you. Professional help is irreplaceable. You’re willingly walking alongside them on their journey but it’s not your job to lead them.

2. Communicate! Communicate!

Communicate!

Sometimes, it can all be overwhelming but don’t think so big. Small acts of kindness can go a long way; clap for the little wins, leave reassuring notes, help them to feel good when they’re feeling fragile. Patience also means accepting that things might not always be fair.

Some days, you may give more than you receive, and that’s ok, so long as there’s a good balance.

5. Dealing with the inevitable conflict Dealing with conflict in a relationship where mental health challenges are present can feel especially charged. Small misunderstandings can escalate quickly and both of you may feel emotionally overwhelmed.

Communication is the foundation and the walls holding the relationship up. The best relationships create safe spaces for open and honest dialogue. When you or your partner are suffering at the hands of mental health struggles, it becomes so much more crucial to create an environment where both people feel heard and understood. Ask open ended questions, and let the other express their feelings without judgement.

It’s easier said than done, but try not to react in the heat of the moment. A moment of pause can prevent further escalation. Take note of your language. Be less accusatory and talk more about your own feeling versus how they made you feel. Work towards repairing the connection when tensions are low. Being sincere in your approach will work wonders to build back the trust.

Remain calm even in the wake of a mental health episode even if you’re feeling hurt by their actions. Ask how they want you to deal with the situation and let them tell you what they need.

Distinguish the person from the condition. Once you’re both calm, then tell them how they made you feel. You’re allowed to be open and honest and be given a safe space to do that.

6. Knowing when to seek help

3. Make sure you’re still taking care of YOU

Therapy—both individual and couples—can provide a safe space to work through challenges.

You cannot be there for them, if you’re not showing up for yourself. To constantly pour from an empty cup will drain you and put a strain on your relationship as time goes on.

If you have decided that you want to be their rock, you have essentially decided that you will always prioritise their needs over your own. And that’s ok but you HAVE TO take care of yourself to stand the test of time, strike the balance between supporting them, and taking care of you. If it’s having a spa, making sure you regularly have time with those who are your soul food, if it means regularly taking up puppy yoga, whatever is good for your soul, do that. Perhaps therapy to have a safe space to off load without having to overshare with friends or family, if you’re a more stoic person who prefers to not discuss problems with those around you.

There should be no judgement from those you share with, but an impartial support worker could be just what you need. To finish, boundary setting is probably the most important act of self care. It doesn’t mean you don’t love them, it means you love yourself too. You cannot be everything to them all the time. It’s ok for you to push back in a loving way and help them to find the support they need elsewhere too.

Love isn’t always enough and situations like this can become emotionally exhausting if they’re repeated. Please never be afraid to ask for help. It’s a sign of your commitment to the relationship.

7. Knowing when to walk away This may be the hardest thing you’d have to do to protect yourself in your relationship. If your wellbeing is constantly being compromised and the downturns are worse than the positives, you may need to face a tough decision. Letting go is not a failure, it means you chose to prioritise yourself. Please don’t feel bad, you did your best. It’s a big toll on someone to constantly put yourself last.

Loving someone with mental health challenges isn’t always easy, but it can be deeply meaningful. Ultimately, the strongest relationships are built not on perfection, but on the ability to face challenges together.

Spring is springing, lent is lenting, the plans are planning and the countdown is on! For me, from a Christian perspective, Easter isn’t about bunny rabbits and chocolate eggs - it’s a time of new beginnings, beautiful stories, a reminder of who I am and what I believe. I love that - unlike Christmas - there isn’t a mad rush, a financial strain and a drastic comedown once it’s over.

Easter is a time for family, reflection, food, church and all things in between!

2. Get Baking – with Chocolate, obviously

Along with the joys of Easter comes with 2 whole weeks off of school (depending on the type of parent you are - this is either a very exciting or very stressful time)

3. Your own at home Easter photoshoot

Easter and chocolate go hand in hand, so this is the perfect excuse to get the kids involved in some baking. From simple chocolate nests (just melted chocolate, shredded wheat, and mini eggs – easy and foolproof) to full-blown Easter cupcakes with pastel icing, the kitchen will soon resemble a flour-covered war zone. But hey, at least you’ll have delicious treats at the end of it!

I’m excited for our first Easter as a family of 4 and as Demi is still little there’s not much she will really enjoy and understand yet - one thing she is obsessed with is her brother, so I’m thinking of lots of lovely - and not ridiculously expensive things to do at home with your little ones over these two weeks.

Here are my top 3 Easter/Spring themed activities I will do during our time off together!

Let’s be honest, we all love an excuse for cute photos, and Easter is the perfect time to capture some adorable family moments. Set up a DIY photo shoot with pastel-coloured sheets or a fluffy blanket as a backdrop. Get the kids dressed up as little bunnies (or just in their best spring outfits) and hand them some props—think Easter baskets, bunny ears, or a bouquet of daffodils. Even better, let them take turns being the photographer! Download Photobooks and make it a nice little memory to remember forever!

1. The Classic Easter Egg Hunt (with a twist) Sure, we all love a good Easter egg hunt – but let’s mix it up a bit this year. Instead of just plonking chocolate eggs around the garden, why not make it a proper treasure hunt with clues?

If you really want to up the game, swap some of the chocolate for small toys, stickers, or even ‘vouchers’ for special treats (like choosing a film for movie night). That way, you won’t be dealing with full-scale sugar meltdowns by midday.

Easter mini egg

TRAYBAKE Great fun to make with young ones over Easter, this bright and beautiful cake features dried cranberries, hazelnuts and mini eggs – everyone’s favourite seasonal treat.

Makes 16 Prep 15 mins Cook 35 mins

Ingredients 220g Essential Unsalted Butter, melted, plus extra for greasing • 100g hazelnuts • 2 x 80g Cadbury Mini Eggs • 200g golden caster sugar • 2 British Blacktail Medium Free Range Eggs • 200g Essential Plain Flour • 1 tsp salt • 100g dried cranberries

Method Preheat the oven to 180 oC, gas mark 4, then grease and line a 23cm square baking tin with baking parchment. Roast the hazelnuts for 8-10 minutes until golden. Allow them to cool then very roughly chop. Meanwhile, leave ⅓ of the mini eggs whole for the topping and roughly chop the rest (or put in a food bag and bash with a rolling pin to roughly crush).

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the butter and sugar.

Whisk in the eggs one at a time, then whisk in the flour and salt until combined. Stir through the nuts, cranberries and chopped (or crushed) mini eggs.

Pour the mixture into the tin and level out, then scatter over the reserved mini eggs. Bake for 25 minutes until golden at the edges.

Allow the cake to cool to room temperature in the tin, then cut into 16 squares. For a chewier texture, try it chilled – the traybake will keep in the fridge for up to five days.

Easter egg

BISCUITS Makes 30 Prep 1 hr Cook 15 mins

Ingredients 75g unsalted butter, at room temperature • 80g caster sugar • 1 large egg • 2 tbsp golden syrup • 265g self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting • 1 lemon, zest • 1 orange, zest • To decorate 1kg royal icing sugar • blue food colouring • Pink food colouring • yellow food colouring

Method Cream together the butter and sugar with electric beaters (or in a freestanding mixer) for 1 minute. Beat together the egg and golden syrup, then beat into the creamed butter.

Sift in the flour, add the zests and beat until it comes together to form a dough.

Roll out onto a lightly floured surface to around 0.75cm thickness. Cut out the biscuits using 6cm and 7.5cm egg-shaped cutters. Put on parchment-lined baking sheets about 3cm apart; chill for 20 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 180 oC, gas mark 4. Bake for 12-15 minutes, until golden. Rest for 2 minutes on the sheets, then cool fully on a wire rack.

To decorate, make the royal icing according to pack instructions. Transfer 3 tbsp icing to a bowl and add about 1 ⁄ 2 tsp water, until it is of piping consistency. Cover with cling film and set aside.

Divide the remaining icing between 3 bowls and add a separate food colouring to each. Then add a little more water to each bowl, 1 ⁄ 2 tsp at a time, until the icings are of piping consistency.

Put 1 ⁄ 2 of the blue icing in a small, disposable piping bag; repeat with the pink and yellow icings. Cover the remaining icing with cling film; set aside. Cut a small hole at the end of each piping bag and, taking care not to use all of each icing, pipe a thin outline around each biscuit so you have 10 blue, 10 pink and 10 yellow outlines. Set aside for 15 minutes.

Now you want to spread a slightly looser icing inside the outlines. Add drops of water to the coloured icings in the bowls to thin them (aim for the consistency of runny custard). Use a teaspoon to gently spoon on the icings and nudge towards the outline edges. Pop any air bubbles with a cocktail stick and leave to set completely (about 2 hours).

Put the reserved white icing in a piping bag. Use this and the leftover coloured icings in the piping bags to decorate the biscuits. Leave your Easter egg biscuits to set for at least 1 hour before serving.

Rhubarb, custard & hot cross bun

PUDDING

Use this recipe as a blueprint, then let the season and mood steer you. Swap the baked rhubarb for tinned cherries in syrup (no need to bake them first) for a Black Forest spin; scatter small cubes of marzipan over the surface before sugaring and baking... there are so many delicious options.

Leftover brioche or croissants also work well – don’t forget you can freeze odds and ends until you have enough.

Serves 6 Prep 25 mins Cook 1 hr 10 mins

Ingredients 400g rhubarb, cut into 3-4cm lengths • 150g golden caster sugar • 1 large orange, zest and juice • 1 vanilla pod, split lengthways, seeds scraped out and reserved • 4 day-old hot cross buns (250g), each sliced into three horizontally • 50g unsalted butter, softened • 300ml single cream • 200ml whole milk • 3 eggs

Method Preheat the oven to 180oC, gas mark 4. In a medium baking dish, toss the rhubarb with 80g sugar, the orange zest and juice, and the empty vanilla pod (reserve the seeds). Cover tightly with foil and bake for 25-30 minutes, until the rhubarb is tender, but still holding its shape.

Set aside to cool (the cooked rhubarb can now be chilled in its syrup for up to 3 days, if needed).

Drain the rhubarb in a sieve over a bowl to reserve the syrup. Lightly spread the slices of hot cross bun with 45g butter and use the remaining 5g to butter the insides of a roughly 20cm x 15cm (1.3 litre) baking dish.

In a large jug, use a fork or whisk to combine 50g sugar with the cream, milk, eggs and reserved vanilla seeds. Layer the buttered bun slices in the dish at a 45° angle, interspersed with baked rhubarb pieces. Slowly pour the custard into the dish, so that it soaks into the buns. Scatter the surface with the remaining 20g sugar. At this point, it’s best to chill the pudding for 30 minutes to soak up the custard. When you’re almost ready to cook, preheat the oven to 180oC, gas mark 4.

Bake for 35-40 minutes, until golden and puffed-up. Leave to rest for 10 minutes before serving warm with the reserved rhubarb syrup.

Cook’s tip If you don’t have a microwave, put the chocolate into a small heatproof bowl. Put the cream into a small saucepan and bring to a simmer. Pour the hot cream over the chocolate and stir until smooth and silky. Cutting into portions is easiest if you use a warmed knife, as in step 1.

Millionaire’s Easter egg

CHEESECAKE

Grab a spoon and dig into this amazing Easter egg cheesecake topped with crunchy-shelled mini eggs. This recipe can be adapted to any medium-sized Easter egg, but a 193.5g boxed Cadbury Mini Eggs Easter Egg works well.

Serves 6 Prep 20 mins Cook 1 min

Ingredients 155g hollow Easter egg • 4 digestive biscuits, crushed into fine crumbs (to give 60g) • 30g butter, melted • 150ml carton Waitrose Double Cream • 60g Belgian dark chocolate • 100g essential Waitrose soft cheese • 1 tbsp icing sugar • 120g small chocolate eggs, to decorate • 4 tbsp No.1 Salted Caramel Sauce 46 •

Method Dip a knife in hot water, wipe it dry, then carefully cut the Easter egg open along the seam to give 2 half shells. Stir together the biscuit crumbs and butter, then divide between the chocolate shells, pressing down lightly with the back of a spoon. Set on a plate, cover and chill while you prepare the filling.

Pour ½ the cream into a microwave-safe bowl and add the chocolate.

Microwave on medium power for 1 minute, then leave to stand for 2 minutes. Stir gently until smooth and shiny, then set aside to cool.

Using an electric hand mixer, beat the soft cheese, icing sugar and remaining 75ml cream together until thick enough to hold its shape. Fold in the cooled chocolate mixture until smooth and silky. Spoon the filling over the biscuit layer, then cover and chill for at least 2 hours, or until set.

Gently crack or lightly crush some of the small chocolate eggs with a rolling pin. Spread the caramel sauce over the cheesecake layer (no need to completely cover it), then decorate with the cracked (or crushed) and whole small chocolate eggs.

ONE-TIN ROAST LEG OF LAMB with herbs & potatoes

Get ahead and boost the flavour further, by adding the garlic and herbs the night before and chilling, then remove the joint from the fridge 15 minutes before roasting.

Perfect for Easter.

Serves 6 Prep 30 mins Cook 2 hrs 30 mins

Ingredients 2¼kg leg of lamb • 2 clove/s garlic, cut into slivers • 1 lemon, juice • 3 tbsp olive oil • 15g pack oregano, leaves picked • ½ x 20g pack lemon thyme, leaves picked • 3 large sprigs rosemary, leaves picked • ½ tsp salt • 1½kg medium-size potatoes, such as Maris Piper

Potatoes cooked this way absorb lots of juices, so they’ll be delicious but not crisp. If you prefer them very crisp, toss in 4 tbsp olive oil, season and roast in a separate dish for the last hour of the lamb cooking time.

Method Preheat the oven to 190°C, gas mark 5. Pierce the meat using a sharp knife, and slip in the garlic slivers. Place the joint in a roasting tray and rub with lemon juice and 2 tbsp olive oil.

Roughly chop the herbs together. Mix with the salt and plenty of freshly ground black pepper, then rub into the lamb. Cover the pan with foil and lightly scrunch it around the edges. Leave the lamb to marinate at room temperature for 15 minutes.

Peel the potatoes and cut into quarters or sixths lengthways, depending on the size of potatoes. Cover with cold water and set aside. Put the lamb in the centre of the oven and roast, covered, for 30 minutes, then turn, baste, re-cover and roast for 30 minutes more.

Remove the foil, then turn and baste the meat again. For medium lamb, add the potatoes now, coat in the fat and remaining 1 tbsp oil and roast for 1 hour, basting halfway until the lamb is cooked and the potatoes golden and tender. For well done lamb, roast the meat for 30 minutes, then add the potatoes and give it 1 hour more in the oven.

When cooked, transfer the lamb to a plate and leave to rest for 15 minutes in a warm place. Keep the potatoes warm too. Carve the lamb and serve together, with the remaining juices from the pan.
