2020 YEAR-END APPEAL

Young students at St. Eugene’s Primary School, Derry

Dear Friends, A crisis has a way of sharpening our focus, forcing us to take stock of what matters the most. For me, that means the people who make up the Partnership’s wonderful community across the United States and Ireland. Like every corner of the world, the island of Ireland has been deeply impacted by COVID-19. As we all continue to grapple with the health and economic crises wrought by the pandemic, thanks to you, the Partnership has redoubled our efforts to empower Irish schools and communities.

strength without togetherness - ní neart go cur le chéile. I am heartened that the things the world will need most as we emerge from these crises—inspired young people and stronger communities—are exactly what the Partnership strives to deliver.

Crises also underscore the need for connection. In our socially distanced world, we are finding new ways to connect to the people and places we hold dear. The Partnership has always served as our bridge back to Ireland: messages from teachers and students we support at home serve as poignant reminders that though we may be miles away or an ocean apart, we are always close to the heart.

It is my sincere hope that we can continue to work together, honoring our Irish heritage while investing in Ireland’s future.

While this year has been devastating in many ways, a sense of solidarity still prevails, illuminating the resilience that lies at the heart of the Irish spirit. Now more than ever it is clear that there is no 2

Míle buíochas, a thousand thanks,

Mary Sugrue CEO, Irish American Partnership

Former student Samantha Barry at Scoil Barra, Ballincollig, Co. Cork

Back to Her Cork Roots

One might say that Samantha Barry, Editor- in-Chief of Condé Nast’s Glamour, has a knack for telling stories. From Irish national broadcaster RTÉ to the BBC to CNN to her current role as Editor-in-Chief of Glamour, this fearless journalist has built an impressive career out of the craft of digital storytelling, expertly navigating constant shifts in the media landscape while keeping people, especially women, at the fore. Barry credits her success to her Cork roots and a primary school teacher who encouraged her to pursue English. At the second annual Nollaig na mBan Women’s Leadership Breakfast in Boston, the Partnership was delighted to award a $5,000 grant in her honor to Scoil Barra, where educators instilled within her a love of storytelling.

Though she now calls New York home, Barry remains in close contact with Scoil Barra, and Principal Karen O’Sullivan in particular. She continues to serve as a massive inspiration for the school’s current pupils to follow their own dreams.

“We in Scoil Barra, were overwhelmed and heartened by the gift your group bestowed upon our school all the way from Boston, across the wild Atlantic Ocean, to our little town of Ballincollig in Ireland. We are honored! We are also very proud of the link between your group and our school.”

- Principal Karen O’Sullivan

DIRECT GRANTS TO SCHOOLS The Partnership’s hallmark Direct Grants to Schools program allows you to select a school or location that is meaningful to you and your family. Your gift makes you a partner in their success. WHAT ARE THE FUNDS USED FOR?

The funds are sent to schools typically to purchase literary, numeracy, and science materials. Some schools desperately need technology or money to save their music program. We believe that the principals know their schools’ needs best, and are guided by their suggestions for funding.

WHAT IS THE AMOUNT OF THE GRANT?

The grants are modest in size but make a transformative impact on the schools they benefit. Grants range from $500-$10,000 depending on the size of the donor’s gift.

MAY I SUGGEST A SCHOOL FOR FUNDING?

ARE NAMED SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE?

Yes! The Partnership encourages donors to suggest schools for funding.

Endowed scholarships are immensely appreciated by the schools and allow them to budget with the gift in mind, creating a sustainable impact. Endowed scholarship programs can be crafted based on consultation with the school, donor, and Partnership staff.

HOW ARE THE FUNDS TRACKED?

Principals are asked to answer a questionnaire with details about their school and how the funds are used. They are also asked to submit receipts and pictures of the purchased materials with students using them.

CAN I PRESENT MY GIFT IN PERSON, IN IRELAND?

Yes! If you are visiting Ireland the Partnership can arrange a visit to the school you would like to fund. Please note the Partnership needs to receive your gift before scheduling a meeting with the school.

Igniting A Love of Reading In County Longford Born on the day before St. Patrick’s Day in County Sligo, Malcolm O’Hagan is a proud Irishman, through and through. As an engineer by training and the forward-thinking founder of the American Writers’ Museum, O’Hagan has always been driven by a love of learning and literature. Through the Partnership’s hallmark Direct Grants to Schools Program, O’Hagan has been able to ignite that same sense of wonder in some of Ireland’s youngest readers. O’Hagan established the Rhatigan Library at Lanesborough Primary School in County Longford in honor of his maternal grandparents, who once ran the school. O’Hagan’s generous support over the years has built the value of the library in ways that will help improve literacy to the immense benefit of Lanesborough’s 84 pupils, six teachers, and the local community as a whole. His latest gift, along with a generous gift from his cousin Michael Power, enabled the school to purchase tablets, which helped ease the school’s transition to remote learning this past spring, as necessitated by COVID-19. O’Hagan looks forward to returning to Lanesborough, where he and his cousin spent many happy summers.

2020 virtual boston marathon

DUBLIN TO ATHLONE CYCLE This past September, Sigmar Recruitment employees took part in a 130 km cycle from Dublin to Athlone - two of the five geographic areas where they are located - to raise money for STEM resources for two local County Westmeath primary schools: St. Ciarán’s National School in Baylin and An Grianán National School in Mount Temple.

One of the city’s most beloved traditions, the Boston Marathon is a powerful symbol of the city’s strength and resilience. Among the nearly 16,000 athletes that took part in this year’s firstever virtual marathon was Brian Sugrue, a dear friend and ardent supporter of the Irish American Partnership. The Dublin native, who now calls Boston home, ran for Ireland, raising money for the Partnership’s hallmark direct grants to schools program. Propelled by the generosity of Partnership members who helped him raise over $6,000 for twelve schools in need, Brian crossed the famed Boylston Street finish line on a quiet September morning. The Partnership would like to congratulate Brian on this incredible achievement and thank

him for his wonderful support— his inspirational 2020 run truly embodied the triumph of the human spirit.

2020 Marathon runner Brian Sugrue

The cycle was a smashing success, with more than 20 participants (including school staff and principals!) cycling against the wind to raise more than $5,000, which the Partnership was delighted to match.

A Healthy future

for northern ireland Dr. Susan K. Whoriskey honors her Donegal heritage and family’s medical legacy with a transformative gift of $100,000 to the new School of Medicine at Ulster University.

When John Whoriskey boarded a boat in Derry to flee the Great Hunger that had ravaged his home county of Donegal, he left family and country for a better, unknown future. Just eighteen, he could have hardly imagined the impressive medical legacy that would unfold from that brave journey to America. After settling in Boston, he married and had a son, John J. Whoriskey who went on to Harvard Medical School. He ran Small Pox vaccination clinics and cared for Tuberculosis patients and victims of the 1918 flu pandemic. He passed down his love of medicine to two of his sons whom both attended Harvard and Tufts Medical School, including Susan’s father Frederick. Frederick became a beloved pediatrician and was the Medical Director of the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Memorial Hospital and Chief of Staff at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, where he vaccinated children against polio and cared for children in underserved areas of Boston. Inspired by the family tradition of medicine and service and the research process that leads to medical discoveries, Dr. Susan Whoriskey became a research scientist and pioneering biotechnology entrepreneur. She was instrumental in the founding of several top biotech companies, including Cubist, Momenta, Moderna, and Vera, all of which are working to cure and prevent devastating diseases, including COVID-19. Her lifesaving contributions earned her an honorary degree from the Ulster University (UU)—just fifty miles from where her greatgrandfather was born. Over 150 years after John Whoriskey left the tiny village of Creeslough, Dr. Whoriskey returned to the exact place where it all began, inspired by her family’s journey. Through the Partnership, Dr. Whoriskey was able to honor this heritage by investing in the region’s future, with a $100,000 donation to the scholarship fund at UU School of Medicine, which will welcome its first class in 2021.

Students at Ulster University Magee Campus

Located on the Magee campus in Derry-Londonderry, the medical school will be the first of its kind in Northwest Ireland, and will help combat a severe shortage of physicians in the area. The scholarship fund will alleviate the financial burden for medical students, making a medical education possible for people of all backgrounds.

“I hope that our gift inspires and catalyzes others to give to the scholarship fund at the Ulster University School of Medicine. As the first medical school in that area, it will provide doctors to serve in that community— truly a gift that keeps on giving.” - Dr. Susan K. Whoriskey

Dr. Susan K. Whoriskey

The medical school will develop a pipeline of qualified physicians to save a healthcare system pushed to the brink by an aging population and the pandemic. The establishment of the medical school is a once-in-ageneration opportunity to build a healthier future. The Partnership would like to express its utmost gratitude to Dr. Whoriskey and her family for not only giving the gift of educational opportunity, but also giving the gift of health to the people of Northern Ireland.

Full Steam Ahead

To create a brighter future for generations to come, we all need to be able to answer some difficult questions. Science provides a way of working out these answers. That is why the Irish American Partnership is proud to be an original supporter of ESB Science Blast, delivered by the Royal Dublin Society (RDS). The primary school program aims to harness the natural curiosity within young people to solve the problems of tomorrow by inviting children to investigate the science behind simple questions that interest them, such as how are rainbows made, or how does sound move around?

“Without the involvement of the Partnership, this project simply would not be possible. - Michelle Maher, STEM Education Consultant & Kilkenny Small Schools Program Coordinator

8

With three fairs in Dublin, Limerick, and Belfast annually, ESB Science Blast equips students with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in the future through engagement in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM). The 2020 Fair, which took place prior to the onset of COVID-19 in early March, was the best yet, engaging over 12,000 children from over 500 primary schools. Though the 2021 Fairs will be held virtually, thanks to supporters like you, ESB Science Blast is going full steam ahead - empowering young people to reach their potential and power their collective brighter future.

Learning Together

Baroness May Blood with students at Cliftonville Integrated Primary School

Congratulations to our longtime partner, the Integrated Education Fund (IEF) for being nominated for the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize—the organization’s second nomination in as many years. In the more than 20 years since the Good Friday Agreement, almost 25,000 children are now educated in 65 integrated schools in Northern Ireland, with 500 new places being created every year. However, this represents less than 8% of school-aged children. The Nobel Peace Prize nomination shows an international appreciation of the work of parents, campaigners, and schools to develop integrated education in Northern Ireland in order to ensure that children of all backgrounds can learn and grow together.

The real heroes of this movement are the parents, the pupils, and the schools, together with you, the friends and donors of the Integrated Education Fund.” - Baroness May Blood, Campaign Chair, Integrated Education Fund

It also recognizes the daily work within integrated schools to actively and intentionally celebrate religious and cultural integration in a divided society. In honor of this historic achievement, the Partnership is pleased to award a $10,000 grant to the Integrated Education Fund.

Stronger together

Announcing the launch of our empathy education initiative with $20,000 in grants.

The Partnership remains steadfast in our mission to build a more peaceful Ireland where all, regardless of race or background, have the opportunity to thrive. As part of this ongoing commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable Ireland, the Partnership is pleased to announce the launch of our empathy education program, Stronger Together. Stronger Together aims to connect a variety of grassroots organizations across the island of Ireland that are dedicated to educating young hearts and minds to confront bias in order to bring about a society where all are truly loved, accepted, and valued. To launch this initiative, the Partnership was pleased to award $10,000 grants to Educating the Heart and Unite Against Hate, respectively.

UNITE AGAINST HATE Developed by the Centre for Democracy and Peace Building (CDPB) in Belfast, Unite Against Hate is an award-winning platform that seeks to raise awareness of hate crimes and promote the benefits of diversity among people in Northern Ireland. Thanks to the generosity of our members, in particular Board member Aidan Browne, the Partnership has invested in the development of online resources for primary and secondary schools to address some of the root causes of prejudice and hate.

EDUCATING THE HEART Run by the renowned peace organization, Children in Crossfire, Educating the Heart is an accredited continuing professional development program that aims to provide teachers with the skills and confidence to foster emotional awareness, critical thinking, and reduced bias within their classrooms. Educating the Heart enhances the overall capacity of students to develop into compassionate citizens that stand up for local and global justice.
