UNCLE VANYA
Scenic Design Academic Fall 2022
Through a sce nic design course at Cal Poly, I completed a scenic design packet for the classic play Uncle Vanya by Anton Chekhov. This set transforms the traditionally static production into an immersive theatrical experience, taking the audience through the labyrinth of an estate. The design follows the source material’s setting of provincial 1890s Russia in order to emphasize the plot’s relevancy across centuries of human culture.

Theme
The cyclical and time-driven nature of this play especially stand out to me, and I plan to have them be the central focus of the set. Additionally, I believe there is the opportunity to have constant elements in every set that emphasize the relationship of monotony and novelty (a strong topic throughout the play’s characters). ‘Uncle Vanya’ is very human-centric with its plot consisting almost entirely of conversation, so plan to design the set in such a way that this is the main focus, and the set does not take away from that.

Motifs
The setting will be consistent with the intended place from the text, provincial Russia around the 1890s. think it’s powerful to keep it in a different time than the present to further emphasize how we still share the same problems as those who lived over a century ago. Additionally, there are multiple metaphors to candles and the characters, which plan to utilize in the set’s lighting design.

2101 LOGAN AVE. ARCHITECTURE
Alongside my studio partner, Audrey Mae Garcia, we accomplished the design of a mixed-use event center in Barrio Logan, California. This historic neighborhood, that’s located right outside downtown San Diego, has long been under the threat and actions of gentrification. In order to add a program that will genuinely assist those members of the community, we designed a space that gives children and teenagers the opportunity to develop interests that will hopefully develop into meaningful work opportunities. Alongside this focus, this space will also be a location for families to host events throughout the week, activating the sidewalk. Furthermore, the residential units above provide a 24/7 caretaker element.

NEXUS : BREWERY + THEATRE ARCHITECTURE ACADEMIC WINTER + SPRING 2021

The year following the global shutdown was an interesting one to say the least, however the most of it was made through my architectural endeavors. The NEXUS complex is located in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota and serves as the premier theatre center in the area. It sits upon the ruins of the old flour mills of past factories, alongside the powerful Mississippi River. NEXUS looks to reveal this beautiful view through a focus on the user’s progression from the street to the interior. While these screens act to emphasize that point, they additionally properly shade the building from intense solar gain while utilizing additional ecological design techniques through solar massing, glazing and air ventilation strategies.
