Did You Know?

Have you ever noticed that winter landscapes are quieter than those of other seasons? It is interesting to learn that this calmness is due to the fact that snow absorbs sound waves. The freshly fallen snow on the ground is composed of 90% air and 10% icy crystals (flakes). Moreover, a large amount of air is trapped among the flakes. These pockets of air confined within the flakes dampen sound waves.

However, if the snow melts and solidifies again, the resulting ice could reflect sound vibrations. During the next snowfall, put on your boots and go enjoy the calm and silence of the white winter landscape!

It all began with a simple interest, a personal hobby. Nothing too serious. Indeed, Alain Choquette made a name for himself as a magician in a somewhat unexpected way.

This unplanned turn took him far from his initial plan. Needless to say, this detour was well worth it!

At the time, I was studying biology and planning to work as a chiropractor. I never imagined making a career as a magician.

To pay for his studies and support himself, Alain Choquette veered into the hospitality industry, a field that immediately captivated him.

To "mix business with pleasure," he started offering small magic shows in the hotels where he worked.

It was a side gig, a "complement."

But in the end, it turned out to be a much more significant experience with wonderful ramifications.

Life and its surprises led him to a crossroads, and the artist, now a favorite among Quebecers, had to make important choices. Fortunately for us, he decided to pursue magic and take the lead in trying to make a name for himself in the industry. However, this initiative was purely for a career purpose, not for seeking fame.

Magic has always been a job, a profession for me. I never sought fame. I wasn't looking to feed my ego.

He started by offering his services to various television shows. After some rejections, the popular talk show Ad Lib gave him a chance.

For eight years, he delighted viewers with his magic tricks. This enriching experience gave him the momentum to launch his very first show, titled "Première apparition," in 1992. His remarkable performance resonated in the United States and even in Europe, where he had to win over an entirely new audience. With all the charm we know him for, he succeeded as if by magic!

The Art of Reinvention

A Healthy Outlook on Life

Regardless of the art form, the challenge remains to be able to reinvent oneself to continue surprising and captivating the audience. The same goes for magic, which requires boundless imagination and impeccable showmanship. Knowing how to reinvent oneself can be a real tour de force... Yet, Alain Choquette achieves it every time! His secret?

In 2020, Alain Choquette suffered a heart attack, an event he believed he was immune to due to his healthy lifestyle. He quickly realized that this feeling of "invincibility" could be dangerous and immediately wanted to convey an important message and raise awareness about the risks involved.

Magic is a passion, but it's also my hobby. I'm constantly creating, searching for new ideas. I also reshape concepts I've already explored to give them a fresh breath.

The magician also reinvents himself through more intimate, personal presentations. In addition to filling auditoriums where he performs, Alain Choquette customizes shows for various organizations and businesses. During his private performances, he manages to build connections among people through his illusions.

Each magic trick aims to engage the group I'm addressing, to speak to each of its members, as well as to the whole. It's my way of bringing people together and showing them the beauty of being united.

He also offers a formula to motivate and inspire his audience with his conference titled "Les pouvoirs magiques en nous" (The Magical Powers Within Us). This recounts the story of a little boy who receives a deck of cards and says to his father, "I want to be a magician." What follows is a touching narrative that details the obstacles, challenges, discoveries, and learning experiences that life places on our path.

I take my audience on a journey through history, and I openly talk about all the steps that led me to where I am now. Through magic and laughter, I speak of a human experience that can apply to everyone. We're all a book, and we all have a past that we can share.

We all have the tools to make our lives a success.

Those with a history of heart issues must undergo rigorous follow-ups, even if they believe they are doing everything right to stay healthy. Our heart is our engine.

We must take care of it and be vigilant for signs of cardiac issues.

This experience also brought a certain "letting go" into the magician's life. Indeed, many things he once considered important became secondary. Pleasing everyone or constantly considering people's opinions is no longer part of his list of priorities.

I've learned to accept that some things are simply beyond my control. I now choose my battles more wisely and conserve my energy for what truly matters.

This renewed outlook on life shines a bright future for Alain Choquette, who looks ahead with awareness and confidence. Whether he decides to continue for many more years or prefers to take a final bow, the journey traveled will have been fantastic because with a touch of magic, the ordinary transforms into the extraordinary.

The new year is well underway, and the holiday season has now transformed into wonderful memories playing in our minds. Parents, sisters and brothers, aunts and uncles, children, grandchildren (and sometimes even great-grandchildren!), close friends and lifelong friends, it was an opportunity to come together to share warm moments. These precious occasions for exchange allow us to reminisce about good times and collectively look towards the future. It's the harmony of yesterday to today with a kind thought for tomorrow.

All of these enriching experiences make us realize how fortunate we are to be so well surrounded. It's also a time to recognize how those who share our lives are there to listen, support, and advise us. In good times and bad, we need to stay connected to this precious world that gives meaning to our existence.

In order to fully enjoy everything that life is composed of, we must, above all, listen to our own needs and well-being. Taking care of ourselves by staying intellectually but also physically active and continuing to participate with pleasure in our activities, hobbies that fulfill our particular interests, our small and big passions.

We must remain in harmony with our mind, our heart, but also with our body, which constantly speaks to us.

What is it telling us? What signs is it sending us? Do we pay special attention to it, or do we ignore the messages it is trying to convey?

Whether it's temporary or recurring fatigue, occasional or constant pain, less clear vision, or less precise motor skills, we must offer attentive listening to our bodies.

The same goes for our precious hearing. Sometimes born out of a simple doubt, the realization that our hearing is not what it used to be can raise its share of questions. Should we be hindered by this obstacle or equip ourselves with the tools to overcome it?

The decision is ours.

It often happens that people choose not to give too much importance to this little warning signal and prefer to wait until it becomes more pronounced. However, we all know that ignoring a problem is never a winning solution and never leads to a favorable outcome. Time passes, the problem persists, and often it takes up a more intrusive space in our daily lives.

Some may say "strike while the iron is hot," others may prefer "prevention is better than cure," or even "don’t put off till tomorrow what you can do today." A Career as an Audioprosthetist A Choice in Harmony With Humanity The career of an audioprosthetist stems from a pronounced inclination towards health, well-being, and mutual assistance.

It is a field where humanity takes center stage, and every action makes a real difference. Choosing to become an audioprosthetist means choosing to change lives every day.

Portrait of an Inspiring Journey It all begins with a 3-year college-level studies that cover various aspects of hearing health, from biology and ear pathologies to psychology and counseling.

The human approach is at the heart of the training.

Simultaneously, other courses provide important technological concepts to equip students with the skills for handling and adjusting auditory solutions.

These combined elements allow future audioprosthetists to be introduced to practice and take their first steps with confidence.

Knowledge Serving Practice The workplace internship, offered in the final academic year, is a crucial and even essential step in the student's journey. During these 15 weeks, the student is placed at the core of their profession and supervised in all their actions. This pivotal moment is filled with challenges and achievements. The student identifies strengths and notes aspects of the profession to further master. They also learn to manage their time between patient consultations and the administrative work related to file processing.

Audioprosthetists have much to learn from various situations encountered during consultations. They must adapt to each patient and provide answers to their questions. This interpersonal contact is a golden opportunity to apply the acquired technical knowledge while exploring the human side of the profession. The audioprosthetist always lends a attentive ear to offer solutions that meet the patient's listening and communication needs. With the patient at the center of their concerns, the audioprosthetist aims to respect the unique character of each person who seeks consultation.

After completing the internship, the beginning of a wonderful adventure awaits!

Challenging Daily Experiences Once established in their professional practice, the new audioprosthetist sees weeks fly by quickly, and consultations multiply day by day. However, each moment is unique. In audioprosthetics, there is no strictly defined routine, which is a notable richness. This daily variability allows the hearing health professional to constantly renew themselves and be continually stimulated by what each day may offer.

To adapt to this pace and manage unforeseen circumstances, the audioprosthetist must demonstrate resourcefulness and develop reflexes that allow them to practice their profession with ease. Myth 03 Hearing is optimal as soon as hearing aids are put in place.

Wearing hearing aids requires an adaptation period during which the perceived sounds may seem different, including your own voice. It is necessary to readjust to listening and understanding speech, as well as recognizing everyday sounds, such as the phone ringing or the oven timer. This adaptation period to sounds lasts at least a month.

Myth 04 The musical style listened to plays an important role in protecting our hearing.

Myths and Truths About Hearing

Many preconceived ideas have circulated for many years regarding hearing loss and hearing aids. It is essential to demystify these beliefs and clarify certain concepts.

Here are some of these misconceptions about hearing:

Myth 01 If the hearing test report (audiogram) does not detect a hearing loss averaging 35 decibels in both ears, there is no need to wear hearing aids.

The Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ) has set a rating of 35 decibels of bilateral hearing loss for eligibility in the hearing aid reimbursement program for adults. However, this does not mean that hearing loss below this criterion does not require the use of hearing aids. Your audiologist will be able to inform you about the steps to take based on the results obtained from your audiogram.

Myth 02 Hearing aids allow understanding everything, even in noisy environments.

Hearing aids improve understanding, even in noisy environments, but they do not completely eliminate ambient noise. Just like for individuals with no hearing loss, some words remain inaudible in noisy environments or during more challenging listening situations (e.g., family gatherings where multiple people are talking simultaneously).

Whether you listen to rock or classical music, what matters is the duration and the sound volume at which you listen to your favorite artists. With headphones, in your car, during a concert, listening to music for an extended period and at a high volume can cause hearing loss.

Myth 05 Hearing loss is quantified in percentage.

Hearing loss cannot be quantified in percentage.

The audiogram displays curves for each ear, assigning a level of hearing loss ranging from "normal hearing" to "profound hearing loss." Your audiologist guides you in reading and explaining your audiogram.

Myth 06 Hearing loss always affects both ears.

Hearing loss is most often bilateral, meaning it affects both ears. However, it can occur unilaterally, affecting only one ear. The causes of this condition are diverse, ranging from head injuries to anatomical problems, and viral or bacterial infections.

An assessment by an audioprosthetist is required to determine which hearing aid suits the patient's needs.

Tympanoplasty Tympanoplasty is a surgical procedure that aims to repair the tympanic membrane, which is the thin membrane located between the external auditory canal and the middle ear that contains the ossicles. This procedure is typically recommended for individuals with a perforated tympanic membrane causing conductive hearing loss, frequent middle ear infections, or other issues related to tympanic membrane perforation.

Procedure of Tympanoplasty

Postoperative Care

The procedure begins with a clinical evaluation of the patient's ear by an otolaryngologist (ENT specialist).

An audiogram conducted by an audiologist is also necessary to assess the severity of hearing loss.

Once the physician confirms that tympanoplasty is necessary, the surgery is scheduled. The procedure can be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the situation.

Postoperative precautions are essential to ensure optimal healing and minimize the risks of complications. After tympanoplasty, it is important to avoid manipulating the operated ear and to protect it from water. Necessary precautions should also be taken to prevent infections, such as colds and the flu, which could result in otitis.

The primary goal of tympanoplasty is to repair the tympanic membrane using a graft, typically harvested from the patient's own tissue (autograft) or, in some cases, from another source (allograft). The graft is carefully placed to cover the perforation or the damaged area of the tympanic membrane. Both children and adults can benefit from this surgery; however, it is advisable to wait until the childhood period of ear infections is over and the patient can follow post-operative instructions well. Waiting for the child to be older is therefore prudent.

Patients should refrain from excessively blowing their nose or pinching their nose when sneezing, as this could increase pressure in the middle ear and displace the graft. The recovery period varies depending on the complexity of the procedure; however, many patients resume normal activities after a few weeks.

Can the Cold Harm Your Ears?

As temperatures drop and we prepare to face winter, it is crucial to pay special attention to our extremities. While ensuring to keep our feet and hands warm, it's important to remember that our ears are also among the vulnerable areas of the body in cold weather.

Just like the tip of our nose, they are not spared from the whims of the cold season!

When the Wind Whistles in Your Ears Wind entering the ears can cause pain due to pressure on the eardrum. Indeed, the movement induced by the wind can create discomfort.

For individuals with a perforated eardrum, the entry of cold wind into the ear can intensify this pain.

Jaws Have Their "Aches" to Tell!

Earaches in cold weather can also be caused by jaw arthritis, also known as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthritis. TMJ arthritis affects the jaw joints, located on each side of the head near the ears. A characteristic of this condition is its sensitivity to temperature variations, especially in cold weather. When the cold sets in, many people with TMJ arthritis experience increased pain in their jaw and ears.

For all these reasons, make sure to carefully protect your precious ears in cold weather.

Equip yourself with a hat, headband, or scarf to keep them comfortably warm and better enjoy the pleasures of the winter season!

Beware of frostbite!

The delicate skin of the pinna is particularly vulnerable to frostbite when exposed to extremely low temperatures, as well as the rays of the winter sun. Frostbite, caused by the cold, presents as dryness and peeling of the skin, thereby increasing the risk of infection due to bacteria infiltrating small skin cracks. Frostbite requires prompt medical attention for optimal healing with the use of antibiotics.

Battery Lifespan In very cold temperatures (-20°C and below), the batteries of your hearing aids have a shorter lifespan. It's important to have spare batteries with you. Make it a habit to keep them in a place protected from moisture and cold (e.g., in your coat pockets).

Taking Care of Your Hearing Aids in Winter During the winter season, you make sure to wear clothing that keeps you warm and protects you from frostbite, allowing you to carry on your activities comfortably and safely.

It's important to know that your hearing aids also require increased protection in cold weather to function properly.

Nice and Dry! Firstly, wearing a warm hat or headband is recommended to prevent moisture buildup in the microphones of your hearing aids. If they are positioned behind your ears, it's preferable to choose a hat that isn't too tight so you can be comfortable without feeling pressure on your hearing aids.

As for rechargeable hearing aids, the same precautions apply—keep them warm. The integrated battery can get damaged in extremely cold conditions, resulting in repair costs.

Hearing Aid Maintenance Moving from the cold outdoors to a warm interior can lead to condensation forming in your hearing aids. Small water droplets can accumulate near the microphones and reach the internal electronic circuit. To avoid this situation, once indoors, remove your hearing aids, open the battery compartment, and take out the battery to allow fresh, dry air to circulate.

Then, place your hearing aids a small container with an effective dehumidifying tablet (ProtecLobeTM kit). Remember to change the tablet every two or three months at most.

Finally, make it a habit to regularly clean your hearing aids using products designed for this purpose.

Don't hesitate to consult your audioprosthetist or specialized educator for more information on the best ways to protect and extend the lifespan of your hearing aids.

External Otitis External otitis refers to inflammation or irritation of the external ear canal, located before the eardrum. It develops occasionally when water enters and remains in the ear canal.

Bacteria can then infiltrate the ear tissue and cause infection. External otitis is usually treated with prescription ear drops.

Otitis Media Otitis media refers to a problem behind the eardrum. This type of otitis can occur occasionally or become a recurrent issue, known as recurrent otitis. Children are more prone to recurrent otitis because their Eustachian tube is still developing. The Eustachian tube is a canal that connects the middle ear to the back of the throat and nose, ventilating the normally air-filled middle ear. In children, the Eustachian tube is very short and horizontal, while in adults, it is longer and at an angle.

The Different Types of Otitis Causes, Treatments, and Prevention

When it comes to ear infections, otitis is generally at the top of the list of the most common illnesses. Three types of otitis are distinguished: external otitis, acute otitis media, and secretory otitis media, also known as silent otitis.

Otitis media generally occur when there is an issue preventing the proper functioning of the Eustachian tube. Several factors can hinder its function, including episodes of respiratory infections such as colds or the flu. There are two types of otitis media: acute otitis media and secretory otitis media. In both cases, there is poor ventilation of the ear and an accumulation of fluid behind the eardrum.

Acute Otitis Media In the case of acute otitis media, the cavity behind the eardrum is infected by a virus. In children, the horizontal configuration of the Eustachian tube allows the virus from the nose or throat to access the middle ear more easily.

Most of the time, there will be an accumulation of infected fluid behind the eardrum.

This can result in symptoms such as ear pain and fever. The pressure from the fluid can lead to a rupture of the tympanic membrane, sometimes resulting in ear drainage. This type of otitis requires prompt medical attention and is generally treated with antibiotics. Since children often experience more than one cold or flu in a year, otitis can occur repeatedly.

Secretory Otitis Media As for secretory otitis media, the middle ear cavity is not infected. However, there is poor ventilation of the ear due to Eustachian tube dysfunction. Fluid accumulates behind the eardrum. Unlike acute otitis media, this type of otitis does not cause clear symptoms, but it can lead to temporary hearing loss or a feeling of plugged ears. That's why it's also called "silent otitis" because its consequences appear gradually, making it challenging to perceive.

For some people, the fluid behind the eardrum will drain on its own after a few weeks. However, the horizontal configuration of the Eustachian tube in children does not allow as effective drainage of the fluid.

If secretory otitis persists over time or if the person experiences multiple episodes of acute otitis in a year, interventions are possible. In such cases, an ENT specialist (Ear, Nose, and Throat) may consider the placement of transtympanic tubes. This is a minor procedure where the doctor will pierce the eardrum to insert a small tube to drain the fluid.

The tube functions to ventilate the middle ear and thus addresses the dysfunction of the Eustachian tube. Generally, the tube remains in place for 6 to 12 months and will fall out on its own. The eardrum will then close.

To prevent recurrent otitis media, it is essential to limit the chances of colds and the flu, such as by washing your hands frequently. Moreover, to minimize the impact of nasal congestion, it is important to teach the child to blow their nose effectively as soon as possible. Nasal hygiene can also be practiced one to two times a day using a saline solution.

One of the key events where hearing health professionals engage with the public is the 50+ Expos supported by the FADOQ network, which attracts a large number of visitors. This event takes place annually in various regions of Quebec.

Hearing health professionals have the opportunity to interact directly with people on-site. They shake hands, offer advice, and, most importantly, ask an important question: "Have you ever had your hearing checked?" Often, the answer is "No... not yet." This marks the beginning of a constructive exchange. They discuss common issues, such as listening to the TV at a high volume or difficulties following conversations in noisy environments.

It's also the perfect opportunity to offer a brief hearing evaluation on the spot. This assessment, lasting 5 to 10 minutes, quickly detects if there is hearing loss. If so, the person can then schedule a clinic appointment for a complete hearing assessment with an audiologist. This proactive approach helps reduce the time it takes to address their hearing health. It's important to note that people typically wait an average of seven years before making an appointment for their hearing health, for various reasons: lack of awareness of the process, the stigma associated with wearing hearing aids, etc.

During their visit to the expo, attendees also have the opportunity to ask questions about the latest hearing aid technologies available on the market, insurance coverage options, wireless connectivity (such as Bluetooth®), TV listening systems, and hearing protection.

Hearing health professionals are present to provide detailed information and help visitors make informed decisions for a better quality of life.

New Products in Hearing Health to Connect People to People As hearing aid technology evolves, one of the top goals remains the same: improving speech understanding in noise. A common complaint of patients with hearing loss is that even with hearing aids, they sometimes have difficulty understanding in background noise.

This new technology noise reduction system was designed with the goal of providing patients with the optimal mix of audibility, speech clarity, and listening comfort. As one example, imagine a trip to the grocery store. On the way to the store, car noise dominates the auditory scene; the loud, unmodulated noise is detected as undesired content and the noise reduction system prioritizes listening comfort and acts to suppress the noise.

When speech is introduced into the scene in the form of a car passenger, the system adjusts to a middle ground where the car noise is reduced and the impact to speech is minimized so that speech is still audible. At the checkout counter, conversation with the store clerk is prioritized and the amount of noise reduction is significantly reduced to ensure audibility.

Hearing Aids to Help Manage Stress For people with hearing loss challenges can sometimes occur when there is an upcoming gathering where they will have to carry a conversation in a noisy environment. Often, they will find themselves concentrating so much on speech or lip reading that they will be physically exhausted. This is known as "listening fatigue," which is recognized as a form of stress.

But here’s the good news! Taking care of one’s hearing loss can play a tremendous role in reducing stress. How? By enabling you to more easily engage with life and pay attention to others, two factors that are key to relieving stress, according to the World Health Organization. Managing stress is especially important, given the detrimental effects it can have on your body and health.

Hearing aids can help you reengage, reconnect, and reduce your stress by relieving social anxiety and therefore help you avoid isolation. They can also relieve tinnitus and help you stay physically and mentally active. In sum, this new caring technology helps you hear better and live better!

Data collected from hearing aid users in the United States and Europe reveal that the satisfaction rate with hearing aids increases with the use of listening assistance accessories, such as a Bluetooth® streaming device or a remote control. Activities Tailored to Them Every other Tuesday afternoon, educators and specialized education technicians take charge of the groups. Activities are decided based on the monthly theme, the level of all students, and the strengths and challenges of each.

Groups can be formed by level so that activities are meaningful. Activities can also be experienced collectively, promoting mutual sharing through social values of kindness, respect, and openness to others.

A Grand Project of Openness to Others A school that shines is a school where the blending of cultures, differences, and individual challenges harmonizes.

The École oraliste de Québec pour enfants malentendants ou sourds has this significant human project at its core.

Afternoons under the themes of sharing, pedagogy, and pleasure were created with the aim of engaging our students, all of whom have hearing and language challenges, in collaborative projects. The primary goal of this project is to explore our world while developing knowledge in a pedagogical form less formal than traditional courses.

Ten compelling themes were covered during the school year. At the beginning of the year, secondary students held real school elections to elect a student council tasked with creating an exciting student life for both young and old. All students had to develop an offering of services for daily student life while also reflecting on major issues related to the environment, common well-being, and community engagement.

Openness to the World This theme was exciting for many students as they got to explore different cultures around the globe.

Aboard Air oraliste, passport in hand, children had the opportunity to visit different countries presented by educators, where flavors, music, and cultures were omnipresent.

The skills the child acquires will serve them throughout their life, both in their relationships with others and in their daily life activities.

Young Entrepreneurs Educators have thought about planning all upcoming themes. During the month of entrepreneurship, students will build a small business selling products (delicious cookies, breakfast in a jar, natural soaps, and relaxing bath bombs!) where everyone will have a significant role to play. Whether in sales, advertising, or marketing, everyone will aim to raise funds for the major project of secondary students. This year, the end-of-year trip will take place in the wonderful city of Toronto!

"ME" The following month, October, revolved around social skills. Students attended a presentation on positive self-image; an activity where students had to draw a tree and list qualities that define them on all the branches. The theme concluded with their personal representation of happiness, where each had to define personal elements representing their definition of happiness. In the same month, based on the theme of self-confidence, students visited residents of Domaine Saint-Dominique and were paired with one of them for an afternoon. The experience was highly enriching and provided a lot of joy and a strong sense of self-worth.

Prominent themes such as mutual aid, culture, nutrition, science and the environment, and physical activity will be the pillars of the coming months.
