A GIFT IN YOUR WILL

your legacy, their future

YOUR GIFT for future generations

“Being awarded a bursary to join such a welcoming community, dedicated to ensuring everyone involved feels respected and valued, has been life-changing. There are no words that truly explain how immensely positive my journey has been. Bursaries are just as important for individuals like me as they are for everyone at Clifton High School.”

FRANK ROBERTS, FORMER BURSARY STUDENT

Whether you were a pupil, parent or member of staff, your Clifton High School journey will have been a unique chapter in your life. You may have been the first member of your family to have a connection with the School, or perhaps you were a fourth-generation pupil, following in your family’s footsteps. By remembering Clifton High in your will you can become part of that continuing story. Your gift, whatever its size, can help create opportunities for future pupils and ensure that the values and experiences you cherish today can be shared for generations to come. Whatever your Clifton High journey, you are part of a very special community, enriched and shaped by generations of pupils, parents and staff from 1877 to today, and beyond.

WHY CHOOSE to leave a legacy Legacies of any size, are hugely important to us, allowing Clifton High School to develop our facilities, fund bursaries and enable future generations to benefit from our special Clifton High education. A legacy is a unique type of donation; a gift that you can plan for now, but costs nothing in your lifetime. You can decide exactly what type of legacy you would like to leave and how you would like it to be used. As we are a registered charity, all legacy gifts to the Clifton High Foundation are completely free of inheritance tax. Under current tax laws, if your legacy constitutes 10% of your estate, inheritance tax reduces from 40% to 36%.* If you would like to leave a legacy to Clifton High School, we recommend speaking to your solicitor - whether you are making a will for the first time or amending an existing will. *Correct as of October 2026

“For most people, a legacy is their greatest and most impactful gift. Gifts in wills have played a pivotal role in shaping our School. They have enabled our School to grow and support pupils with lifechanging bursaries. With your support, we can continue to provide an outstanding learning experience for our pupils today, and for generations to come.”

MR WILL PHELAN, HEAD

HOW TO LEAVE A GIFT I ALREADY HAVE A WILL Reviewing your will regularly is important, as tax laws and your own circumstances change over time. You can make small alterations to an existing will by completing a codicil or Letter of Wishes. We do advise that you contact your solicitor when seeking to update your will.

I CAN ONLY LEAVE A SMALL AMOUNT, IS IT WORTH IT ? Any legacy left to Clifton High School plays a vital role in ensuring more children can have access to a Clifton High education and that we can fulfil our long-term plans. Whatever amount you are able to give, you have our deepest thanks.

I DO NOT HAVE A WILL Making a will is very important and not as difficult as you may think. If you do not already have a solicitor, the Law Society offers a free Find a Solicitor service, or we can reach out to our network.

TYPES OF GIFTS

There are three different types of gifts you can leave in your will, and you are advised to speak to your solicitor regarding which one is right for you.

A RESIDUARY GIFT This is a percentage of your estate, once all other specific gifts in your will have been distributed (the 'residue'). It is your decision to leave part or all of your 'residue' to Clifton High School. Many people choose to give a residual gift because it maintains its value with inflation.

A PECUNIARY GIFT This is a monetary gift from your estate, usually a set sum of money.

A SPECIFIC GIFT This is a particular item, group of items, or property. For example, you may leave personal possessions, land, property or shares to a named beneficiary.

1877 CLUB The 1877 Club was established to recognise and thank those who have left a bequest to Clifton High School in their will. If you notify us that you are leaving a legacy to the School and are happy to be recognised publicly, then you will automatically become a member. The creation of the 1877 Club has been important to us, as it is an opportunity to thank all our legacy donors during their lifetime. We organise an annual Club event which celebrates your generosity and allows you to share your memories of Clifton High. You will also be invited to special occasions such as Rose Day, and receive regular communications to keep you updated on the enormous impact legacy-giving has at our School. We appreciate that some of our donors prefer to remain anonymous, and we respect your decision. However, we would still appreciate you informing us if you have left a legacy.

“Both my son and daughter attended Clifton High School. The School's warmth, support and encouragement made it part of our extended family. They subsequently acquired Oxford degrees and excellent careers. I am grateful and a bequest is definitely in order.”

DR COLIN PHILLPOTTS, LEGATOR AND 1877 CLUB MEMBER
