Welcome to
Moberly’s House Moberly’s House formed in 1993 as an amalgamation of Brown’s House and Dakyn’s House. Moberly’s House has a strong spirit of community, warmth and respect, which is fostered by the older pupils and readily accepted by the junior pupils. The House is known for its allround spirit, borne from the house’s togetherness and desire for shared success. Whilst it is the name of a physical building, the House system at Clifton is such that Moberly’s House is a home and a family where respect and caring for each other ensures a safe, secure and enjoyable environment to thrive in. This results in confident, honest, resilient and motivated individuals and lifelong friendships. Moberly’s has a proud history which is a product of the pupil’s desire to be their very best and this filters through their academic studies and all other aspects of school life. From debating to drama and sport to House song, representing the school and the House is an opportunity for all to demonstrate their talents, extend their boundaries and represent their fellow housemates. Ultimately Moberly’s House is a home for the pupils to thrive in, a place where they are encouraged to grasp all opportunities, to fine tune their moral compass and a place that gives them the courage and confidence to develop into the person they want to be. Welcome to Moberly’s and enjoy your stay! Mr G.Catchpole (Housemaster) and the House Team

The House Staff There is a continuous adult presence in the house during the time that the pupils are boarding. The “core” house team is led by the Housemistress or Housemaster (HoM) who is responsible for the pastoral care of all those in the house, closely supported by the core team consisting of the Assistant Housemistress or Housemaster (AssHoM) and the Matrons. The Matron is the oil that keeps the engine turning. They are an ever present in the house during the teaching day and beyond. The matron’s remit is seemingly endless but a key focus is to help keep all the pupils organised, healthy and hygienic. The core staff are supported by the house tutors who provide additional staffing and support throughout the weekday evenings between the hours of 7:00pm and 10:15pm. Starting at a new school is both exciting and frightening. Whether it seems important, or not, it is always better for the pupils to speak to someone. New pupils are encouraged to approach any member of the House staff and also the other pupils in the house. The sooner these relationships are built the happier the pupils are and the stronger the house becomes. Likewise, parents should feel no constraints regarding contacting the HoM, AssHoM or the Matrons. They all understand that such phone calls, or emails, are always with the best interests of the pupils at heart and contact sooner, rather than later, is always the right approach.

Moberly’s House Handbook 2026/27
The boarding day fits around the academic and co-curricular aspects of the school day. “Call over” (registration) takes place in the House three times a day. It is compulsory as it ensures everyone is where they should be and also serves to pass on any important messages. Prep (homework) time is a 1.5hr timeslot between 7:15pm and 9:00pm, although it does not have to be limited to this time. For years 9, 10 and 11 this may be monitored prep (dependent on effort levels). All other pupils should be in their own room working, using their various forms of technology for educational purposes only. After prep is free time. During this time there are optional weekly activities that vary throughout the year (e.g. football, basketball, swimming, waterpolo, darts, rugby and running) and on Saturday evenings the Junior Common Room (JCR) is open to years 9 and 10 to promote socialising across the boarding community. The duty matron will be the ever-present cover during the day with the HoM and AssHoM regularly appearing in between teaching and coaching. In the evening the HoM or AssHoM will be on duty with the support of a member of the tutor team. Overnight the HoM or AssHoM will be around for any emergencies. On Saturday there are lessons in the morning and sporting activities in the afternoon. Sundays begin at 10:50am for call over and brunch. The afternoon is a mix of free time, school activities and house trips and the evening (from 6pm) follows a similar routine to the weekdays minus the compulsory prep session.

Health and Wellbeing The College’s Health and Wellbeing Centre is staffed by an experienced team of nurses, physios and wellbeing practitioners. It is also partnered with the local GP surgery resulting in excellent onsite care. A Doctor is present in the Centre each morning and pupils can visit the GP surgery (a 5 minute walk) should the need arise. It is essential that the College is aware of a pupil’s medical background. This should be completed within the joining documents and is entered on the school system. Should there be any changes the Health and Wellbeing team must be informed directly or via the HoM. For full boarders it is sensible to transfer to the school doctor. This does not prevent them from seeing their family doctor. This said, anyone can visit the Health and Wellbeing staff who will advise them on the appropriate next steps. In addition, it is recommended that pupils use the School Medical Insurance Scheme as it makes the next level of care accessible in shorter timelines. Any pupils feeling unwell should see a member of the House staff. Basic medication may be administered within
the House but for more severe symptoms it’s a trip to the Health and Wellbeing Centre. Pupils may only keep medication themselves if agreed by the Health and Wellbeing Centre staff (this includes paracetamol and homeopathic remedies). Those unwell will usually be kept in the House unless the Health Centre staff feel isolation or 24 hour care would be more appropriate. In this case they will be admitted to the Health Centre, or parents/guardians may prefer to collect them. Furthermore, the Bristol Children’s Hospital (home to Wallace and Grommit) and the Bristol Royal Infirmary are situated on the College’s doorstep. Clifton College is committed to the wellbeing of its pupils. Within the Health and Wellbeing Centre are “the Wave” and “the Deck” wellbeing areas along with a team that includes counselors and external engagement mentors. Should a special diet be required for medical reasons catering will accommodate all reasonable requests and this information should be submitted as part of the joining documents or directly to the pupils HoM if there are any changes to this.
Further Pastoral Support The pupils in the house should talk to whoever they are comfortable with and this may be different on different occasions. Within the house are the HoM, AssHoM and the Matrons and within the school are the School Wellbeing team, the Chaplain, pupil support groups and of course all of the other teachers. Whoever a pupil may wish to turn to it is important they feel they can and that they do.
Moberly’s House Handbook 2026/27
Academic Matters a) Each pupil will be assigned a tutor from the House tutor team. Minor queries about academic matters should be addressed to a pupil’s tutor. Major issues should be referred to the HoM who, if necessary, will begin discussions with Heads of Department, the Senior tutor, the Academic Deputy Head or the Head of Sixth Form as appropriate. b) Sixth Form (years 12 and 13) are known as Block I. Years 9, 10 and 11 are known as Block II.
c) If at any stage a pupil decides that they are doing the wrong subject(s) they should inform the HoM but final decisions will occur only after discussion with parents and the necessary academic teachers. d) Alongside a pupil’s tutor, the Head of Sixth Form and the HoM will maintain an overview of any UCAS applications as well as writing references. e) Parents will be informed of academic progress routinely via the schools grading and report process.
Moberly’s House Handbook 2026/27
Rewards
and Sanctions We aim to encourage positive conduct through our House Points system, which celebrates good, kind, and helpful behaviour, high academic effort, and House participation. Positive points can be exchanged for edible treats and also contribute to the end of term prizes. The system also allows for awarding “strikes,” which are an opportunity to provide a gentle nudge in the right direction to alter behaviour. Accumulating too many strikes, however, will lead to school sanctions. The Housemaster/mistress monitors our points system carefully for patterns and, if appropriate, awards a school sanction. It is rare for a pupil to complete their time at Clifton without a minor misdemeanour. Many of these small offences can be dealt with using House points and minor school sanctions without normally contacting parents. For more serious breaches of school rules resulting in a Saturday Night Detention (SND), however, pupils will be sent to the Head Master and parents will always be informed. The school sanctions are managed by the School Marshal, who has high expectations for pupil behaviour —as nice as he is, his office should not be a regular visit for anyone but himself.
When school sanctions are necessary, the College has four levels of punishment that can be handed out each week: Marshal’s Extra Duties (MED): Used for minor lapses like forgetting books, untidy appearance, or being late for lessons. Compulsory Extra Work (CEW): Assigned for pupils who are behind in their work and need to catch up. Week Night Detention (WND): Usually held on a Wednesday, for pupils who have consistently failed in the above areas or have been involved with more serious offences. Saturday Night Detention (SND): Reserved for those offences that have come to the attention of the Deputy Head (Pastoral) or Head Master.

The House A-Z Absences (unplanned)
Cars
Should a pupil need to miss school (e.g. for illness) parents should contact the house by emailing the house core email address (see earlier in the Handbook).
Pupils who wish to drive will need to submit a completed driving form to the school Marshal. Pupils are not allowed to give lifts to other pupils, unless permission from the Marshal has been obtained. The area parking restrictions mean there isn’t parking provision for pupils within the school.
Access (security) There are two doors into Moberly’s House that are accessible by school card and monitored by CCTV. The main entrance is open from 6am10:00pm (11pm on a Saturday) and the basement entrance is open from 6am-8pm. The doors are alarmed and alternative arrangements need to be made to access the House outside of these times.
Ad-Hoc Boarding Nights Day Pupils may stay in a boarding house on an ad-hoc basis for a fee. Bookings can be requested by emailing your Housemistress/ master stating the required dates and the child’s preferred House.
Birthdays Everyone deserves a Birthday cake and if the pupil is in the house that night the relevant year group will be invited for celebratory cake and the traditional, rarely in tune, sing song.
Chapel Assembly is held in the Chapel on Monday morning and further “services” are held Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, with a “congers” (singing) service on Saturday. Attendance is compulsory. There are also important starred services, denoted with a * in the School calendar, which are a part of the traditional life of Clifton College. These are compulsory and may occur on the occasional Sunday (such as Remembrance Sunday).
Clothing - Uniform and Casual The clothing list is provided in the School’s Parent Handbook and the Uniform is available from the school shop (see “Grubber”). It can be ordered online for collection or alternatively you can visit the shop. During the summer it is advisable to telephone in advance to make an appointment and avoid disappointment.
Moberly’s House Handbook 2026/27
The rationale behind the uniform rules are smart, simple and easily maintained. For those in year 12 and 13 it is advisable to have at least two pairs of trousers with any suit jacket as trousers wear out much quicker. As “please tuck your shirt in” is potentially the most common sentence in school a belt with trousers is strongly advised. Casual clothing can be worn at the end of the school day and at weekends. Storage space is adequate but not vast. Pupils should bring a manageable amount of possessions. Shoes are a constant issue, so a maximum of 3 pairs of trainers is permitted. Everything has to be taken home at the end of each term unless a pupil lives overseas, in which case it can be packed up and placed in storage for safekeeping. Everything, including casual clothes must be name-taped (sewn) with initial, surname and, preferably, the House initials (in the neck of tops and the waist of trousers). Sadly, iron-on name tapes do not last.
Dentist Emergency dental care can be arranged privately if necessary, however routine care should remain with a pupil’s home dentist.
Exeats (planned absences from school) The school recognises 3 types of exeat: 1. Official exeats Holidays listed in the calendar, e.g. half term, the Easter holiday etc. The House will be closed during these exeats. The College will request information for these exeats by Google Form (the links will be provided via email as the holiday’s approach). 2. Unofficial exeats/holidays Holidays requested by parents and guardians. If your child requires to be away from school permission will be required from the Head Master. Extended holidays will be recorded as unauthorised absence in line with the DfE guidance. 3. Adhoc exeats E.g. requests to stay locally with friends on a Saturday. It is rare that these would not be granted but they need to take place after Saturday sport is finished. Emailed notification from parents or guardians is required at least 48 hrs in advance and, if it involves staying away from the House or Home, a completed exeat form is also required. There are many times that parents may want to take their child out for dinner, or other activities, and this is no problem as long as a member of the house staff has been informed by the parents/guardian.
Moberly’s House Handbook 2026/27
Flexi Boarders Weekly arrangements for Flexi boarders will be agreed at the start of the year. There is plenty of flexibility around these arrangements but any changes, either long term or one-offs, must be communicated by parents in advance (notification from a pupil is not sufficient). To book additional nights, above the contractual allowance, please contact the HoM.
Grades and reports A more detailed explanation of the grades is available in the parent handbook but, in summary, grades covering effort, behaviour and performance are regularly provided by a pupil’s academic teachers. The pastoral side of the house is particularly focused on the effort and behaviour grades and this contributes to the reward and recognition within the house (see House points).
Grubber (The School Shop) The Grubber is a favourite haunt for many pupils, particular due to the last entry on the following list of sale items: • • • • •
School Uniform Clifton sportswear and sports equipment Stationery and textbooks Toiletries Drinks and snacks
Opening Times During Term Monday to Friday - 8.00am to 5.00pm (Pupils only 10.00am to 2.00pm) Saturday - 8.00am to 2.00pm During Holidays Monday to Friday - 9.00am to 4.00pm Saturday - 9.00am to 1.00pm Telephone: 0117 315 7620 Email: schoolshop@cliftoncollege.com Online: https://shop.cliftoncollege.com
Guardians In summary all students, with parents based overseas, require a guardian in the UK. Whilst the College is not directly involved in the appointment of education guardians, it does regard their careful selection as an important safeguarding concern. To this end, the College requires that parents arrange for the appointment of an education guardian through a professional agency that has Gold Standard Accreditation with the Association for the Education & Guardianship of International Students (AEGIS) or certified Guardian under the BSA Certified Guardian Scheme. A list of such agencies for AEGIS can be found at this link & the list of BSA certified guardians can be found here. The College accepts that there will be cases in which parents wish to appoint a close family member as their child’s education guardian, rather than use a professional agency. In these circumstances parents must ensure
Moberly’s House Handbook 2026/27
that the person nominated is fully able to fulfil the role of an education guardian, which includes their proximity to the college and their ability to attend the college at short notice. Parents must also inform the College prior to changing their child’s education guardian. This can be done by contacting the child’s HoM in the first instance who will provide the relevant paperwork to complete. The College’s full guardian policy is available here.
House Roles All pupils should lead in the House. This said specific House responsibilities, of which there are many, are divided amongst the pupils (e.g. House sailing, House play director). To aide with the general running of the House there are U6th leadership roles: 1. Head of House and Deputy Head(s) of House. These roles will be awarded to members of the U6th who will act to help galvanise the house and form a conduit between House staff and the pupils. The appointments are termly ones. 2. Duty 6th On a rota system, and in pairs, the U6th will be on duty for a weekly period. Their role is to monitor breakfast and help monitor prep.
Internet and Devices There is wireless internet access throughout the house. Use of the internet is closely monitored and is subject to the school usage policy. Misuse will be severely dealt with but in order to prevent this from happening there are significant filters on the school internet and the internet will automatically shut down shortly before bedtime (actual time is year dependent). The school will issue Chromebooks to new pupils in year 9, 10 and 11 for their academic work and full details of this will be sent out separately. It is expected that all year 9, 10 and 11 will have a schoolissued Chromebook in lessons with them at all times. Should a pupil wish to bring an additional device for their personal use outside of lessons they are welcome to do so. For years 12 and 13 it is advisable that pupils consider owning a laptop or tablet device with camera, microphone and, ideally, with an ‘inkable’ screen, i.e., one that supports a good quality stylus. Pupils are encouraged to use these devices in lessons. The school network and online resources are compatible with all platforms: Windows, iOS, Chrome and Android. In answer to a common question from parents: it is not necessary to spend a lot of money on a device solely for academic use, and a reasonably priced Chromebook is entirely suitable for most school purposes. For all devices, personal and school issued, a protective sleeve/cover and insurance is strongly advised.
Moberly’s House Handbook 2026/27
Kitchens
Merchandise
While all 3 meals are compulsory there are kitchens on each floor containing toasters, kettles, microwaves, fridges and cookers. They are shared areas and must be kept clean.
A House polo shirt is part of the uniform list and should be purchased at the school shop. In addition to this the pupils appear to rather enjoy House branded merchandise. The nature of this merchandise might vary but its purchase is optional.
Each kitchen is stocked with milk, tea, coffee, bread, butter, jam and, on special occasions, Chocolate spread, although it doesn’t last long.
Laundry Three times a week the matrons organise the washing of clothes (especially sportswear), bed linen and towels. Socks are washed in a net bag and underwear in a separate net bag. The school laundry washes at 40 degrees and has to tumble dry everything. If clothes do not conform to this and need hand washing it will be the pupil’s own hands! The school also arranges for a dry-cleaning service to collect jackets, trousers and specialist clothes should it be required.
Mobile Phones The College’s mobile phone usage policy aims to foster a healthy use of technology and encourage pupils to interact face-toface. To eliminate unwanted distraction and stress, all year groups must hand in their mobile phones for the school day and, in years 9, 10 and 11 overnight. Mobile phones present opportunities for both positive and negative use and can cause significant issues within the school environment. Because mobile data bypasses school filters, monitoring is very difficult; therefore, parents are recommended to ensure contracts have limited data allowance and/or monitor usage.
Moberly’s House Handbook 2026/27
Money - Pupil Accounts & Pocket Money
Parent Portal, School Webpage and Calendar
Pupils school accounts are used to cover essential travel (e.g. taxi and train tickets) and breakages (which will be communicated if substantial).
The College website (www.cliftoncollege. com) gives news and information such as term and exeat dates and the whole term’s calendar (including parents’ evenings, musical evenings and concerts, all of the sporting fixtures).
In the school shop only essentials (e.g. toothpaste, shampoo) can be added to the pupil account (sweets are not classed as essentials!). The amount of pocket money the pupils should be given is a fine balancing act: too much money can have less than desirable consequences. Having considerable sums of money lying about the house is not advisable. Pupils should have a bank account with an associated bank card. There are a number of account types where both pupils and parents can have online visibility of the financial transactions being made. It is strongly recommended that parents maintain an understanding of what their child is spending their money on. For overseas pupils to set up a bank account, parents/guardians may need to contact admissions@cliftoncollege.com, or HoM, to request a letter confirming the pupil’s school registration.
Night time At night, in an emergency, the pupils can either ring the bell outside the HoMs office door or ring the bell outside the Assistant Housemasters door. Pupils should not worry about waking them up, their welfare is far more important.
The Parent Engage Portal (accessible via the website) contains information about the academic performance and behaviour of the pupils (reports, grades etc). A password will be required for this and will be issued, along with full instructions, to all new parents at the start of the year.
Personal belongings and Insurance There is a limit to these and at the end of this booklet is a list of acceptable and non-acceptable items. The less the better as, worst case, they may have to carry it to the top floor. pupils will need personal insurance to cover their laptops, mobile phones and other items of value whilst at school. It is also suggested that items are named and pupils bring a coded (not keyed) padlock in order to secure their items in the available cupboards.
Moberly’s House Handbook 2026/27
Saturday Nights With permission students from years 11, 12 and 13 are allowed off campus on a Saturday evening. Pupils will need to confirm their plans and will need to return to the house by the following times: Year 11: 9.30pm Year 12: 10.30pm Year 13: 11.00pm
The Moberly’s Yard Moberly’s Yard has become a popular sporting arena, in particular “Yard Cricket” has become a traditional summer pastime however, as with all major sports, the excitement levels can overstep the mark as can the noise created. There are people living close by and the House should be considerate at all times.
Trips and Outings House trips will be arranged approximately once per term and have one target in mind – fun. Paintball, Airhop, theme parks and Ice Skating are among the more favoured of these trips. In addition, cross House boarding trips are also organised and offered to those wishing to take part. Cost for these trips will be communicated in advance.

FAQ’s What are the uniform requirements?
I would like my child to enjoy music lessons while at Clifton.
A link to the uniform list can be found in the parental handbook which will be issued to you centrally. Uniform can be purchased from the school shop either online or in person but this can get busy over the summer so an appointment is recommended. Telephone: 0117 3157620 or email: schoolshop@cliftoncollege.com
Please specify this on your joining documents or, if your decision is made at a later date, please email your Housemistress/master. Please note that it will take some time to finalise the music timetable and so students should expect to start lessons in the second or third week of term.
Is there a second hand uniform shop?
My child has specific medical needs, what should I do?
As a key part of the schools sustainability work “The Basement” is our studentrun second-hand shop, selling pre-loved uniform and sports kit for the Pre, Prep, and Upper School. Opening times are usually Monday afternoons from 14:15 to 14:45, or by appointment (please contact mlockwood2@cliftoncollege.com). There are also pop-up events throughout the year. All proceeds go to charities selected by the student-led charities committee.
Please ensure this information is included when you complete the online web admissions forms as this will ensure it is entered into the school system and passed to our School Health Centre. This should be sufficient but it is also advisable to contact your child’s Housemaster/mistress and draw their attention to it. What are the term dates and dates of parents meetings etc? Please click on the links for the term dates and the latest school calendar.

I have lots of questions, who should I ask?

If you have questions that remain unanswered after reading the information you have been issued with by Admissions and your Housemistress/master then please do contact your child’s Housemistress/ master, they will be happy to help.
(N.B. The team sheets require a password that parents will be informed of at the start of each academic year).
My child is starting Sixth Form. What colour of suits are permitted? Suits should be part of a set, matching in colour and material. They must be plain, dark blue (or navy), dark grey or black. Suits that are lighter in colour will not be accepted. Additionally, there should be no patterns.
How do I manage my child’s pocket money? Houses do not hold money for students therefore it is advisable to do this via a bank account, one which is visible to yourselves and to the student. Particularly for overseas students it may require a visit to a bank (with an adult 18+) and a letter from the school (available from admissions, admission@cliftoncollege.com). Also note that all pupils will have lockable cupboards but these require coded padlocks (these are available from the school shop).

Does my child need a guardian? In summary all students, with parents based overseas, require a guardian in the UK. In these circumstances parents must ensure that the person nominated is fully able to
fulfil the role of an education guardian, which includes their proximity to the college and their ability to attend the college at short notice. Parents must also inform the College prior to changing their child’s education guardian. This can be done by contacting the child’s HoM in the first instance who will provide the relevant paperwork to complete. The College’s full guardian policy is available here.
Am I allowed to go to my child’s room? You will be permitted to help your child move into their rooms at the start of term but subsequently parents (or siblings) must not go where the dormitories are unless they are accompanied by a member of staff.
