Architectural Concept

The Whale I

t’s a majestic, awe-inspiring experience to see a whale emerge from the depths to the surface of the water, only to disappear again below the waves. This action frames the design and context of The Whale, an upcoming attraction in the Norwegian town of Andenes, considered one of the top places in the world to watch these creatures pass through on their migratory route and located 186 miles north of the Arctic Circle. The architectural concept for The Whale works with the natural landscape, itself undulating in peaks above and valleys below the ocean’s surface. Here, its construction makes a smooth, hill-like line from the shore of a small peninsula, appearing to organically grow from the landscape and water in a single arc with no clearly defined boundary. Inspired by the Earth’s shape, the structure’s framework consists of a curved, concrete shell, which, through its innovative support mechanism, houses a column-free space underneath. Adding to the natural character, The Whale’s roof is covered in stones similar to the nearby shores, while large windows let visitors look out at their

surroundings, including the open ocean, mountains, and distant archipelago. The exhibition is expected to present a new approach to observing marine life through a combination of art, science, and architecture without disturbing the surrounding environment. armth through pink champagne hues merges with precise contemporary geometry in Britto Charette’s Milina project. With the project completed in August 2020, the client initially approached the Florida-based interior design firm to create an entirely white space for their 7,000 square foot home with an outdoor terrace. Yet, through encouragement, they played off this foundation with darker hues and rich, elegant accent woods. As the centerpiece to the project, the space known as the champagne room feels bubbly yet sophisticated and, to some degree, deceptively simple, until you take a look at all the details. The space, plush and relaxing, further serves as a gateway to an outdoor lounge, essentially creating a stunning indoor-outdoor entertainment area that’s perfect for the area’s warmer seasons. Milina comes to life through its precision and interplay of texture. You notice that through knife-edge ceilings and sculptural wall panels creating even more angles, and sense it further through smooth, almost futuristic mixed metals contrasting against wood grain. Custom furniture crafted by Grafton further enhances the character, feeling ultra-modern yet a touch space-age retro. It is also the location of the recent HBO series Big Little Lies.
