Imagine golden swathes of silky soft sand beaches, iconic dramatic rocky outcrops, towering cliffs washed by the wild blue Atlantic and endless green golf course with undulating fairways – these are the immediate images conjured up for Portugal’s Algarve. This marvellous stretch of coastline is smattered with pretty, laid back villages, quaint towns, fishing hamlets and the ever present glorious beaches; add in the essential touches of delicious seafood, char-grilled sardines and the odd drop of Tawny port and the irresistible ingredients of a holiday on the Algarve are born! The Algarve has many beautiful and many popular resorts all along its coast. Some are already well known to us and some others remain like undiscovered gems waiting for their lustre and value to be explored. Universally loved, the resort of Praia da Rocha (2nd largest on the Algarve) appeals to all ages as the superb sugar soft sand beach is the focal point by day and is dramatically overlooked by the resort town perched on the cliff face as if guarded by an angel! The local town of Portimao is close by too, so the attraction of good leather shops and traditional restaurants is a big draw. The laid back resort of Praia do Vau is almost a continuation of Praia da Rocha, so it’s possible to enjoy a combination of two resorts rolled into one!
Albufeira is equally known and loved by all. The resort’s crowning glory is Fisherman’s Beach, but the lovely old Moorish style architecture in the town means the resort is absolutely full of character and atmosphere. Go a bit upmarket and visit Vilamoura where the marina area is crammed with opulent yachts and pleasure craft or opt for the more down to earth local area of Quarteira on the outskirts. The delightful little local village of Carvoeiro has embraced and nurtured tourism, but still retains a nice local feel. The resort of Alvor was once an obscure fishing hamlet and indeed, even today many of those traces are still visible with the brilliant throwback to the superb fish and seafood restaurants and narrow cobbled streets add to the natural charm. Another delightfully traditional town is Lagos where architecture, history and the modern day walk hand in hand.

The genius behind maintaining Lanzarote’s unique landscape today is local architect and man before his time, César Manrique, who advised and cajoled the authorities to ban building any edifice above the height of a palm tree. His extraordinary vision means that Lanzarote today is quite flat and attractive and has avoided the blight of high structures and skyscrapers. A must see is his own house, which is now a museum.
Lanzarote is one of our very favourite holiday island escapes. The Irish holidaymaker has had a long-standing love affair with this lovely island and these days, it feels like a home from home. Lunar landscape apart, this Canary Island is beloved by many and is a bolthole and refuge from life’s hectic pace. Laid back ambience, warm waters, golden sunshine and wonderful food are just a few of the island’s essential ingredients for brilliant holidays in Lanzarote. The most outstanding feature of Lanzarote is its fascinating topography, which absolutely resembles the surface of the moon! The National Park at Timanfaya is a
Lanzarote has many excellent resorts and, as the island is not very large, all benefit from proximity and therefore accessibility to great beaches and general infrastructure. Matagorda and Playa de los Pocillos are nicely laid back, straggly resorts, which share a splendid promenade that runs all the way to Puerto del Carmen. Flanking long stretches of dark sand beach, the promenade is the perfect evening “rambla”. Lots of little shops, bars and cafés line the route, so there are plenty of pleasant distractions along the way. The main resort of Puerto del Carmen needs little introduction and its popularity speaks volumes. The tiny harbour area is really atmospheric as the sun goes down when the local restaurants light their barbecues and the waft of grilled fish fills the balmy air. Sheer heaven! Wander round the town, dip in an out of the tourist shops – there are always shoes and bags to be bought! Down south in the once fishing village of Playa Blanca, the resort is perfectly informal and casual and is very suitable for relaxing, laid back holidays. Costa Teguise is an attractive town with pristine paved streets, pretty plazas and open-air cafés and bars. Year round holidays to Lanzarote are truly enjoyable and offer the most amazing value for money. A real Canary Island winner!
