Its international competitions, education programs, and concert series embody an enduring commitment to artistic excellence and the discovery of new artists.

MISSION

From its inception, the Cliburn has had a strong sense of purpose built on two fundamental beliefs: that great classical music is a language that transcends all boundaries; and that excellent young artists deserve a platform on which to be heard. That foundation is based on Van Cliburn’s unprecedented international impact following his victory at the 1958 Tchaikovsky Competition, and his lifelong vision of sharing music with as many people as possible. The organization bearing his name has now carried this banner proudly for 55 years, championed by a host of exceptional people who have dedicated their time and resources to its cause.

Throughout the 2013–2017 cycle, the Cliburn committed itself to smart growth. The preceding 50 years of tremendous accomplishment placed it as one of the top arts institutions in the world, as well as a jewel in the Fort Worth-Dallas cultural landscape. Building on that reputation, the Cliburn looked to enter its second 50 years with forward-thinking intentions: how could it grow its international brand, better serve and promote great artists, be a stronger partner in its community? New programs were created. The latest technologies were utilized. Existing programs were fine-tuned for today’s audiences. The results of those efforts follow in this Quadrennial Report.

These four years have been marked with innovation, growth, and precious musical moments for our growing Cliburn family.

Each of the initiatives of the 2013–2017 Cliburn cycle has looked back to the history on which this Foundation is built. First and foremost, we honor the highest achievements in musical performance and share that music with the world. Four years of strategic programming and efforts culminated with the Fifteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, in which the level of talent impressed the largest worldwide audience we’ve ever had. Based on what we experienced in Fort Worth and the international reach the Competition achieved, I think we can be optimistic that the future of classical music remains strong.

The musicians who have graced our stages—whether competitors in the Cliburn, Junior, or Amateur competitions or the world-class Cliburn Concerts artists—have two things in common: they each shared their special vision with us; and they were welcomed warmly by our Fort Worth audiences and community. We’ve introduced many new ideas to our wonderful base of supporters and patrons this cycle, and those initiatives were met with genuine excitement and support. You came out to Sundance Square for an outdoor concert or to watch the Competition simulcast. You joined us at the Live Oak Music Hall & Lounge for Cliburn Sessions, our new club series. You shared our videos and other posts online to spread the Cliburn to your friends. You said yes to the new Junior Competition and marveled with us at the talent of the teenage artists who assembled here.

You’ve come along with us as our partners, and we are ever grateful.

The new initiatives introduced this cycle are credited to Jacques Marquis, our enthusiastic leader, and the wonderful staff that he has assembled. I applaud their hard work and the outcome of their efforts. Enhancements to artistic programs and competition formats. Expansion of the Cliburn brand. Enhanced digital presence.

Renewed commitment to community partnerships. Doubling the impact in our local schools. These four years have been remarkable.

And lastly, a heartfelt thank you to our volunteers! They are the best in the business! None of this could happen without them, because of the time and skills they contribute, and the heart they bring to their jobs. Under their leadership, there is a buzz that permeates throughout our entire community, as well as to our competitors, guest artists, and the classical music world. I can’t explain how that happens, but I know it happens BEST in Fort Worth. I trust that the Cliburn will cherish and maintain this ‘Secret Sauce’ for many years to come.

Thank you for allowing me to be your chairman these last several years. I cherish this honor and take many memories with me—of friendships, accomplishments, progress, and, of course and always, the joy and magic that music brings to our lives.

In July 2013, all of us—the Cliburn staff, board, artists, and community—knew we were at the start of a pivotal time for the future of the organization. We had successfully completed the Fourteenth Cliburn Competition, only three months after we said goodbye to our inspiration and namesake, Van Cliburn. After the board officially offered me the position of president and CEO in March 2013, our team felt the importance of holding such a revered institution in its hands, with the mandate of intelligently and passionately planning the trajectory of its next 50 years.

As we considered the vision and planned the growth of the Cliburn, based on the Strategic Plan approved by the Board in December 2012, we used two areas of questioning: 1. Are there new programs or means of distribution that can be added to reach more people with classical music? and 2. Are there tweaks or additions that can be made to existing programs to refresh and make them even better for participants and the audience? We wanted to bolster the fulfillment of our mission and find the smartest ways to keep the Cliburn brand alive both locally, nationally, and internationally over the four-year cycle.

So we set about the job before us, and—though a top priority is to be forward-thinking, always considering improvement and advancement—this is a good moment to look back at the accomplishments of the 2013–2017 cycle. Some important efforts: • Consistent Branding—from the look and feel of materials to the naming of all programs, we’ve worked to make the Cliburn stamp a symbol of consistent excellence.

• New Junior Competition—the first major program added to the roster since 1999, this brand new competition for 13- to 17-year-olds reaches and encourages the best rising talent at an earlier age and keeps the Cliburn brand present internationally.

• Amateur Competition—this outreach to non-professional pianists 35 and older is beloved by the international amateur pianist community; this year, we elevated the experience by moving to Bass Hall and, most importantly, bringing the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra to the Final Round.

• Education—serving our youngest patrons has been a priority of the Cliburn since the 90s. This cycle we doubled our impact in local schools, as well as wrote and produced a new education stage show about the story of Van Cliburn. Cliburn in the Community was added to bring young artists to the public-at-large for free concerts.

• Local concerts—great touring artists and warm Fort Worth audiences deserve the perfect concert experience, and we’ve continued to mold Cliburn Concerts to try to achieve that. Additionally, two offerings were added to attract new audiences: Cliburn Sessions, a club series, and the Cliburn Festival.

• Cliburn Live—building on the Cliburn’s rich webcasting history, this program grew exponentially and now includes over 250 performances each cycle, including select Cliburn Concerts. The ultimate culmination was our partnership with medici.tv that resulted in up to 5 million views during the 2017 Competition.

• Cliburn Competition—we took a fresh look at our signature program with great results from both artistic and marketing standpoints. A chief concentration was connecting with major voices in the classical music world to add them to the Cliburn family. Locally, Fort Worth became PianoTown, with piano key crosswalks and the simulcast to Sundance Square.

• Career Management Program—ultimately, we are about our winners, supporting their new careers (the Cliburn is only the beginning)! We developed new major partnerships with key international artistic organizations to help grow our support for them and their careers.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful Cliburn staff; their careful attention to detail makes the difference between good and great. It has been our honor to serve the Cliburn’s mission these past four years, and we can’t wait to share what is in store for the next four with all of you!

PROGRAMS FIFTEENTH VAN CLIBURN INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION May 25 – June 10, 2017 I Bass Performance Hall

The Van Cliburn International Piano Competition exists to share excellent classical music with the largest international audience possible and to launch the careers of its winners every four years. Building on a rich tradition that began with its 1962 origins in honor of Van Cliburn and his vision for using music to serve audiences and break down boundaries, the Cliburn seeks, with each edition, to achieve the highest artistic standards while utilizing contemporary tools to advance its reach.

The Fifteenth Cliburn Competition did just that: an exponentially larger audience witnessed the talents of 30 extraordinary pianists from 15 countries; the eyes of the music world focused sharply on Fort Worth, Texas; the winners were chosen through a carefully developed artistic process; and the medalists now begin their touring careers with a widespread fanbase.

Every four years since, that free broadcast grew rapidly both in audience numbers and artistic quality. 2017 was a game changer; in full partnership with Paris-based medici.tv, the world’s largest classical music channel, over 110 hours of live concerts, commentary, features, and more were broadcast live online. Hosted by dynamic piano duo Anderson & Roe, the webcast reached a worldwide viewership that totaled almost 10 times that of four years prior.

Partner: Fathom Events In 2017, the Cliburn became the first classical music competition to simulcast live to movie theaters. Through partnership with Fathom Events—the leading domestic distributor of event cinema—and hosted by WQXR’s Elliott Forrest, the concertos performed by all six finalists were heard and seen on 223 screens in 93 markets across the United States.

INTERNATIONAL MEDIA COVERAGE

Partner: Fort Worth Convention & Visitors Bureau Long-term media outreach culminated in solid coverage from local, national, and international press in the lead-up to and during the Competition. WELCOME TO PIANOTOWN

For three weeks every four years, Fort Worth, Texas, becomes the center of the musical universe, and Cowtown transforms into PianoTown. In the lead up to the Competition, pianos could be seen at just about every Fort Worth happening, from major public events like Main St. Fort Worth Arts Festival, Friday on the Green, and the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, to private events for organizations such as the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Fort Worth, Inc., Downtown Fort Worth Rotary, and Fort Worth Sister Cities International. The Cliburn also went to Dallas for concert appearances for the North Texas Commission, World Affairs Council, Dallas Press Club’s Tribute to Bob Schieffer, and the Dallas CVB’s WTTC Global Summit event at the Bush Presidential Library.

The signs of PianoTown could be physically seen across the city in May and June through increased banners and outdoor ads, crowned by the pièce de résistance: the transformation of the crosswalks leading to Bass Hall into piano keys with a large Cliburn logo welcoming patrons.

FINAL ROUND OUTDOOR SIMULCAST & CLOSING PARTY

Partner: Sundance Square Another first: the final two concerts were simulcast to a large LED screen in Sundance Square Plaza on June 9 & 10. More than 4,500 people watched live over two days as the six finalists performed concertos with Leonard Slatkin and the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, followed by the announcement of the winners at the Awards Ceremony. The community excitement rose to a crescendo with a huge outdoor closing party, featuring the Fort Worth Jazz Orchestra and Adonis Rose. The crowd rose to its feet at the sight of the three medalists as they made their way to the Sundance stage to be presented by Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price.

FREE COMPETITION FESTIVAL EVENTS

The 2017 Competition featured an expansion of additional offerings for the community-at-large and in supplement to concertgoers’ experience. From Piano Lunch performances, stagings of Van Cliburn: an American Hero, and sample Cliburn in the Classroom programs, to symposia and lectures featuring worldrenowned artists, speakers, and industry professionals, the free events were enjoyed by over 4,500 people.

In addition to our valued jurors and competitors, participants included representatives from the U.S. Department of State, National Endowment for the Arts, World Federation of International Music Competitions, Universal Music Group, Jeunesses Musicales International, American Public Media, and WQXRFM (New York), as well as music education specialist John Feieraband and renowned author Stuart Isacoff.

More significant than the coveted Cliburn medals and cash prizes, the medalists of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition are offered an unparalleled opportunity to launch careers as concert pianists through concert bookings, recordings, and significant media exposure. The Cliburn also works closely with each to give personalized mentorship and advice as they adjust to a busy concert schedule and life as a public figure, and begin to form long-term plans. This fulfills our mission of identifying extraordinary pianists with a clear artistic vision, and giving them the platform to share their gifts through a meaningful career. The career management prize, including engagement fees the medalists will earn, is valued at over $1.5 million.

2017 CLIBURN WINNERS (2016–2017) The strategy for the 2017 career management program was developed and initiated in 2016–2017. This included 100 concert bookings for the debut 2017–2018 season, several new partnerships, and the formation of the International Advisory Council.

NEW CAREER MANAGEMENT PARTNERS: • London-based boutique agency Keynote Artist Management will work with the gold medalist on European and Asian tours and to deliver an international career mentorship program; • Decca Gold will release the first commercial recordings and guide the winners through the process; • 8VA Music Consultancy will develop online presence, and assist with media coaching, image consulting, and publicity planning; and • The International Advisory Council provides medalists with a network of industry professionals to whom they can go for advice and mentoring, and who will be actively involved in their career development.

PROGRAMS FIRST CLIBURN INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR PIANO COMPETITION & FESTIVAL June 21–28, 2015 • PepsiCo Recital Hall & Ed Landreth Auditorium • TCU

In June 2015, the Cliburn hosted its inaugural Junior Competition and Festival—the first major program to be added to the Cliburn roster since 1999— as a tool to continue to round out the realization of its mission. Aimed at the encouragement and development of extraordinary pianists age 13 to 17 from around the world, the new Competition was hailed as a resounding success by competitors, patrons, volunteers, artistic collaborators, and media alike.

“In its first manifestation, the Cliburn International Junior Piano Competition appears appropriately grounded, admirably combining professional-level pressure with the same performer-friendly atmosphere that has been a large part of what has made the main Cliburn Competition (which will come around again in 2017) the pinnacle of the competition world. On the basis of the performances I heard this weekend, the Cliburn Junior is already, like the main Cliburn Competition and the associated Cliburn Amateur Competition, the best of its kind.”

THE NUMBERS THE COMPETITORS 23 competitors represented 13 countries: Canada, China, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Japan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Tajikistan, United States.

THE COMPETITION 7 internationally esteemed jurors chaired by 1997 Gold Medalist Jon Nakamatsu heard nearly 21 hours of music during 12 concerts over 4 Competition rounds, providing individual notes to competitors on 50 performances; 7 hours of rehearsals prepared finalists for concerto performances with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and Maestra Mei-Ann Chen.

More than 3,000 attended performances in person.

THE FESTIVAL 5 symposia and workshops were presented by 16 specialists on topics ranging from working with an orchestra to career building; 240 minutes of free community performances were given by 20 competitors at 4 locations.

Over 1,000 attended Festival events.

THE WEBCAST 34 hours of performances, commentary, and interviews, hosted by piano duo Anderson & Roe, were broadcast live online over the course of 8 days and were posted for on demand viewing. Views to date have topped 220,000 for over 1.2 million minutes watched by viewers in 170 countries.

THE MEDIA 30 journalists covered the Competition in person—major Dallas-Fort Worth outlets plus members of the media from Canada, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, and Poland—with many more writing from around the world; outreach resulted in over 100 stories in June 2015 alone, including such outlets as NPR, Los Angeles Times, NY Daily News, BR-Klassik (Germany), and RTÉ lyric fm (Ireland), as well as daily Competition coverage in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Potential reach from media coverage was estimated to be over 83 million people.

PROGRAMS SEVENTH CLIBURN INTERNATIONAL AMATEUR PIANO COMPETITION June 19–25, 2016 • Van Cliburn Recital Hall & Bass Performance Hall

Established in 1999 as the first of its kind in the United States, the Cliburn International Amateur Piano Competition promotes lifelong music making as a vital part of daily life. The quadrennial festival, heralded as “a celebration of music, and the people who have to make music, no matter what” (The Boston Globe), is open to non-professional pianists age 35 and older who do not derive their principal source of income through piano performance or instruction.

Held in June 2016, the seventh edition saw several key modifications and additions that brought new attention from competitors and audience members alike: • •

ORCHESTRA. For the first time in Cliburn Amateur history, the six finalists had the chance to perform one movement of a concerto with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and Damon Gupton—a rare opportunity that the pianists called the true prize of the Competition and a thrilling experience for the audience as well.

VENUE. Holding the Final Round performance in stunning Bass Performance Hall and the earlier rounds in its sister venue Van Cliburn Recital Hall brought a sense of event to the festival and allowed competitors, their families, and patrons to enjoy the amenities of downtown Fort Worth.

WEBCAST. Every note of the Amateur Competition was professionally webcast, allowing friends, family members, and fans to cheer the competitors on from around the world.

THE NUMBERS THE COMPETITORS 68 competitors represented 18 countries: Brazil, Canada, China, Cuba, France, Germany, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan, Turkey, United Kingdom, and United States.

THE COMPETITION 7 internationally esteemed jurors chaired by 2001 Cliburn Gold Medalist Olga Kern, heard over 35 hours of music during 13 concerts over 4 Competition rounds. More than 3,000 attended performances in person.

THE FESTIVAL 3 symposia were presented by 11 participants, including the entire jury; 10 hours of free performances were given by 30 competitors at the Live Oak Music Hall & Lounge and DFW Airport’s Terminal D. Over 300 attended free events, plus thousands of travelers at the Airport.

THE WEBCAST Hosted by Shields-Collins Bray, 34 hours of performances, commentary, interviews, and awards ceremonies were broadcast live online over the course of 6 days and were posted for on-demand viewing. Views have topped 185,000 for over 1 million minutes watched by viewers in 60 countries.

THE MEDIA 15 journalists covered the Competition in person with more writing from around the world; outreach resulted in 85 stories and a reach of over 27 million.

CLIBURN CONCERTS More than forty years ago, the Cliburn established Cliburn Concerts, a recital series designed to engage and provide beautiful concerts for the supportive Fort Worth community during the “interim years” of the Cliburn Competition.

The addition of this major new program has resulted in over four decades of great artists gracing North Texas stages under its auspices. Venues and programming have evolved over the years—always with the goal of creating singular, unforgettable moments between artist and audience.

The past four years were no exception to that; over the course of this cycle, the structure of the series shifted to better serve audiences and artists. The opening of the Kimbell Art Museum’s Piano Pavilion in 2013 offered another stunning performance environment, providing more flexibility in matching performer with venue between the new auditorium, Bass Performance Hall, and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.

Over 16,000 attended Cliburn Concerts this cycle.

CLIBURN SESSIONS 2014 saw the introduction of a classically alternative music scene to Fort Worth—Cliburn Sessions, presenting three club concerts per year. This cycle brought amazing talent to the Near Southside’s Live Oak Music Hall & Lounge, with diverse audiences coming together for a communal music experience.

“The concept behind Cliburn Sessions is to present classically-trained artists in a very relaxed environment, where they are free to be casual, to blend genres, to interact with the audience,” said Cliburn President and CEO Jacques Marquis. “It’s an intimate, cool environment—and allows us to bring even more great talent to Fort Worth. Many of these musicians may venture outside of the classical idiom during the course of the concert—into jazz, pop, world, alternative. In the hands of exceptional artists, good music is good music.”

CLIBURN FESTIVAL In 2015, the Cliburn launched the Cliburn Festival, a new annual initiative designed to examine different perspectives in music—such as the work of a singular composer, the music of a particular moment in history, or a significant stylistic movement. The two editions presented this cycle provided deep dives into drastically different themes, providing rich cultural and educational experiences, while bringing new audience members and artists into the Cliburn family.

CLIBURN IN THE COMMUNITY For years, the Cliburn has gone out into the North Texas community to provide free concerts. In 2014, those efforts were given a structure and a name: Cliburn in the Community. The revamped program provides the experience of live classical music performance to a broad audience through partnerships with vibrant venues and organizations throughout the Fort Worth area. The program brings in young, emerging artists for weeklong residencies to include performances and other community engagement opportunities.

Over 12,000 attended Cliburn in the Community concerts this cycle.

CLIBURN 180° Cliburn 180° is a social group for arts-minded professionals that focuses on classical music for our generation. Established in 2009 for people in their 20s and 30s, it offers fun social events and opportunities to stay engaged with the arts community in Fort Worth. Members also serve as social hosts to the Cliburn competitors, stepping in as a similarly aged welcome committee to help show the young pianists the town.

CLIBURN IN THE CLASSROOM The signature music education program Cliburn in the Classroom (previously called Musical Awakenings®) presents the excitement of live piano performances to second-, third-, and fourth-grade students and reinforces the basic elements of music through fun, interactive activities within the context of classical piano repertoire. Students see professional musicians perform pieces composed by Beethoven, Chopin, Bach, and many more. This cycle, the number of these in-school programs doubled from 125 to 250 per year.

• The program reaches approximately 50,000 students annually in 180 North Texas elementary schools—all Fort Worth ISD elementary schools, plus nine other districts.

• The Cliburn’s education piano—a 5’7” Steinway grand— travels over 5,000 miles annually, visiting North Texas schools.

• Cliburn in the Classroom programs are written by Dr. John Feierabend, professor emeritus of music education at the Hartt

School of the University of Hartford, and Shields-Collins Bray, principal keyboardist for the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and Cliburn artistic consultant.

• 91 percent of campuses served are Title 1 schools.

• Approximately 75 percent of students served are classified as “economically disadvantaged” by the Texas Education Agency.

ADOPT-A-COMPETITOR Fort Worth school children get a direct link to the Cliburn Competition through the Adopt-a-Competitor program, which brings competitors into their schools for performances and question-and-answer sessions. Students then follow their “adopted” competitor as the event moves forward. In 2017, nine competitors participated: Martin James Bartlett, Sergey Belyavskiy, Alina Bercu, Kenny Broberg, Rachel Cheung, Madoka Fukami, Dasol Kim, Rachel Kudo, and Philipp Scheucher.

VAN CLIBURN: AN AMERICAN HERO For the first time ever, Performing Arts Fort Worth’s Children’s Education Program and the Cliburn collaborated to create a brand new arts education program. Utilizing actors, a concert pianist, and video projections, this one-ofa-kind production teaches children about the life, music, and significance of Van Cliburn.

“Van Cliburn: An American Hero,” written and directed by Dallas Theater Center Associate Artistic Director Joel Ferrell, was presented at Bass Performance Hall to 12,000 Fort Worth Independent School District fourth graders in October 2014—as well as during the following three school years.

“What better way for kids to learn about this important time period in world history—and be exposed to classical music in a compelling way—than through such a powerful, real life story?” said Jacques Marquis, Cliburn president and CEO. “The live performance features the piano works he loved and played, and serves to ensure that Van’s legacy—his political and musical significance—continues to spread to the next generation.”

VAN CLIBURN:

CLASSICAL PIANIST AND INTERNATIONAL ICON After moving its offices to 201 Main Street, Suite 100 (the ground floor of the Wells Fargo Tower), in downtown Fort Worth, the Cliburn began planning an installation to tell the story of Van Cliburn through a display of significant memorabilia. The space opened in May 2017 and is free and open to the public during Cliburn office hours.

A few highlights of the exhibit are the first place medal Van Cliburn won at the 1958 Tchaikovksy Competition; his 1959 Grammy® Award; his platinum record, for the first classical LP to sell 1 million copies; the Presidential Medal of Freedom awarded by President George W. Bush in 2003; personal letters from Presidents Reagan, Clinton, and Obama; and a plaster cast of Mr. Cliburn’s hands.

VAN CLIBURN MEMORIAL CONCERT The Cliburn, with Sundance Square, hosted a special memorial concert in honor of its inspiration and namesake, Van Cliburn, on February 27, 2014—the one-year anniversary of his passing. The evening outdoor event in Sundance Square Plaza was free for all to attend, was webcast, and featured recitals by eight Cliburn Competition award winners: José Feghali, 1985 gold medalist; Yakov Kasman, 1997 silver medalist; Alexander Kobrin, 2005 gold medalist; Alexey Koltakov, 2001 finalist; Steven Lin, 2013 jury discretionary award winner; Simone Pedroni, 1993 gold medalist; Maxim Philippov, 2001 silver medalist; and Antonio Pompa-Baldi, 2001 silver medalist.

VIRTUOSITY:

THE FOURTEENTH VAN CLIBURN INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION In 2013 and 2014, film producer Lori Miller and director Christopher Wilkinson, an Academy Award-nominated screenwriter, worked tirelessly with their dedicated team and Cliburn staff to create a powerful feature-length documentary out of the thousands of hours of footage they shot before and during the 2013 Cliburn Competition.

The result was an absolutely stunning film.

Virtuosity premiered in November 2014 at Bass Performance Hall in a special opening night screening at Lone Star Film Festival. It went on to screen at several international film festivals including Seattle, Palm Springs, and Minneapolis-St. Paul. It aired nationally in the United States on PBS on July 31, 2015, and is available for purchase at major outlets including Amazon and iTunes. It also won the Czech Crystal Award for best documentary at the 2015 International Television Festival Golden Prague.

ANSWERING THE STRATEGIC PLAN On December 2012, the Cliburn Board of Directors approved a new Strategeic Plan entitled “Transforming the legacy: a new strategic vision for the Cliburn. Below are the goals of that plan, and how those have been met during this cycle.
