Her burgeoning career includes a number of prominent engagements with orchestra, in recital, and as a member of the Aletheia Piano Trio, which debuted at the Kennedy Center in 2014. Deeply committed to sharing her joy for music and connecting with communities, she also engages students and community audiences through frequent school and outreach concerts and master classes.
YEOL EUM SON 2009 CLIBURN SILVER “ Yeol Eum Son devotes herself to her dreaming… A musical experience of the deepest mutual understanding is portrayed, a truly magical moment.” — Der Tagesspiegel Yeol Eum Son followed her 2009 Cliburn success with another second prize win at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2011. She’s performed around the world, recently appearing with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, Budapest Festival Orchestra, and NHK Symphony Orchestra; and has six unique recording projects, including a 2018 release with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and Sir Neville Marriner. Having achieved great fame in her native South Korea, she is an honorary ambassador of the Seoul Arts Center and her home city of Wonju.

Since his 2009 Cliburn triumph, Haochen Zhang has captivated audiences around the world. Career highlights include immense popularity in his native China, tours with the Munich Philharmonic and Sydney Symphonies, and the Mariinsky Orchestra under Valery Gergiev. He recently received the Avery Fisher Career Grant, made his recital debut at Carnegie Hall, and performed with the China NCPA Orchestra at their Carnegie Hall debut and New Year concert in Beijing, and the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra in its Kennedy Center debut.

He is artist-in-residence at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Vienna Musikverein; he tours with Yuja Wang (including a stop this season at Carnegie Hall), and YoYo Ma and Emanuel Ax; and he returns to Cliburn Concerts with extraordinary pianist Enrico Pace. Paris-native Alexandre Tharaud’s career abounds with accomplishment and intrigue: in addition to concerts with most major orchestras and venues across North America and Europe, he’s collaborated with horse trainer and impresario Bartabas, appeared in and performed the soundtrack for Michael Haneke’s Academy Award-winning Amour, and recorded 37 albums. In 2015, he took on one of the pinnacles of keyboard literature—Bach’s Goldberg Variations— which he performs for us, in one set, on each of two nights in April for his Texas debut.

Born and raised in Texas to a family of Polish musicians, pianist Adam Golka has won widespread critical and popular acclaim with his “brilliant technique and real emotional depth” (The Washington Post). A recipient of the Gilmore Young Artist Award and a fellowship from the American Pianists Association, he has performed with dozens of orchestras, from Seattle and Atlanta to BBC Scottish and Shanghai Philharmonic, and in recital at renowned venues and festivals. And he’s a North Texas favorite: he studied at TCU with his greatest musical influence, 1985 Cliburn Gold Medalist José Feghali, and has appeared with the Dallas and Fort Worth Symphony Orchestras and at the 2015 Cliburn Festival.

Our 2017 Silver Medalist returns to make his first Cliburn Concerts appearance, after a debut season that included a recital tour in Hawaii and across the country; a return to his alma mater, the University of Houston, for its annual Texas Music Festival; and an acclaimed engagement with the Minnesota Orchestra deemed “highly auspicious… marked by poise [&] technical brilliance” by the Star-Tribune. A native of Minneapolis, Kenny Broberg won prizes at the Hastings, Sydney, Seattle, and New Orleans International Piano Competitions before taking home second in Fort Worth last year. He currently studies with 2001 Cliburn Gold Medalist Stanislav Ioudenitch.

8980: Book of Travelers is an attempt to rediscover and celebrate our collective humanity in the face of deep political and cultural divisions. The day after the 2016 presidential election, Gabriel Kahane set out on an 8,980-mile train trip around the continental United States with no phone or internet connection. The song cycle/monodrama that resulted etches a series of intimate character studies. Kahane is an American composer with a barrier-breaking career whose major label debut recording was deemed “one of the year’s very best albums” by Rolling Stone. He is also the son of 1981 Cliburn finalist and renowned conductor Jeffrey Kahane.

We learn many of their songs when we’re very young; they often become the soundtrack of our lives. Join us as we dive into the Great American Songbook, with piano transcriptions of many of its famous pieces by some of today’s most prolific composers (Stephen Hough, Earl Wild, Mason Bates, Jake Heggie, Ricky Ian Gordon) and performed by several of our favorite pianists. In 2016, she was awarded the special prize at the New York Concert Artists Worldwide Debut Audition, which included a Carnegie Hall debut in 2018. Ms. Cheung has appeared with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Sydney Symphony, St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, and the London and Paris Chamber Orchestras. She has also performed recitals in Paris, Kiev, London, New York, Toronto, Miami, Shenzhen, and her native Hong Kong.

APRIL 29–MAY 3, 2019 Italian pianist Leonardo Pierdomenico won the Raymond E. Buck Jury Discretionary Award at the 2017 Cliburn Competition, and his performance at the 2016 Queen Elisabeth Competition was included on its best-of-competition CD, released by harmonia mundi. He was named a fellow of the 2016 Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, working with artists such as Jeremy Denk, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and Leon Fleisher. He has played recitals in Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands, and in the major venues of Italy. In 2011, he was awarded a medal for his artistic achievements by Italian President Giorgio Napolitano.

PARKING Free parking is available at all Cliburn Concerts venues. Bass Performance Hall: 777 Main Parking Garage, located directly south of Bass Performance Hall at Commerce and 5th Streets. You may enter the garage starting at 6 p.m. from either 5th or 6th Streets between Commerce and Calhoun. Kimbell Art Museum and Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth: Use museum and street parking. Scat Jazz Lounge: Parking in Sundance Square garages is free after 6 p.m. You may also utilize the Sundance Square valet, which is complimentary with validation from Scat.

If you are unable to use your tickets, we ask that you give them to a fellow music lover to use, or let us know you won’t be using them by exchanging them for another concert in the season or donating your tickets back by calling 817.212.4450 at least 24 hours prior to the concert.
