Forty years ago, the Cliburn established Cliburn Concerts, a recital series designed to engage and provide beautiful concerts for the supportive Fort Worth community during the “interim years” of the Cliburn Competition. The addition of this major new program has resulted in four decades of great artists gracing Fort Worth stages under its auspices. Venues and programming have evolved at times over the years—always with the goal of creating singular, unforgettable moments between artist and audience. This season, we’re introducing some changes to the Cliburn Concerts format, with the intention of delivering the best concert experiences possible. We’ll present one blockbuster event at Bass Performance Hall, a recital with superstar violinist Hilary Hahn. For Cliburn at the Kimbell, we now announce two distinctive series: Masters, with two-night engagements by some of the greatest performers of our day; and Virtuosos, featuring phenomenal talents who, this year, are making their Cliburn Concerts debuts. And Cliburn at the Modern remains true to its mission of highlighting the works of living American composers. We also give you dates for two of our other signature programs, so that you can mark your calendars now! Cliburn Sessions, our club series at the Live Oak Music Hall & Lounge, presents classically trained artists in a very relaxed environment, where they are free to be casual, to blend genres, and to interact with the audience; and Cliburn in the Community features weeklong residencies for young artists—often former Cliburn competitors—and includes several free public concerts.

In the more than two decades since her professional debut, violinist Hilary Hahn has shown an everevolving approach to music making matched only by a curiosity about the world around her: “She started out as a prodigy of rare clarity and virtuosity and has developed into a daring, mature artist eager for new collaborations and repertory” (The New York Times). The three-time Grammy® Award-winning musician, who “sits atop the pantheon of stellar violinists,” (Nuvo) will bring her expansive interpretations and creative repertoire to the Bass Performance Hall stage for an incandescent, one-night-only performance with renowned pianist and conductor Robert Levin.
CLIBURN at the KIMBELL: MASTERS two-night intimate engagements by some of the greatest performers of our day
Brentano String Quartet Haochen Zhang, piano Thursday, October 27 and Friday, October 28, 2016 7:30 p.m. Kimbell Art Museum Piano Pavilion Since forming in 1992, the Brentano String Quartet has specialized in “exemplary performances [and] startling musical revelations” (The Guardian, London), regularly touring around the world to popular and critical acclaim. The group provided chamber music for the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2013 and will do so again in 2017. The gold medalist of the 2009 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Haochen Zhang has sold out tours of China and appeared with luminary conductors like Valery Gergiev and the late Lorin Maazel. He’s captivated audiences throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas with a “combination of enchanting, sensitive lyricism and hypnotizing forcefulness… a phenomenon encountered very rarely” (The Jerusalem Post).
Nathan Gunn, baritone Julie Gunn, piano Thursday, January 26 and Friday, January 27, 2017 7:30 p.m. Kimbell Art Museum Piano Pavilion On one of the most exciting and in-demand voices of the day, The New York Times said Nathan Gunn “commands an operatic baritone whose mighty heft and richness confer an outsize authority on everything he touches.” The frequent recitalist is also a supporter of new works, creating numerous roles at major opera companies such as the Met, San Francisco, Seattle, and Houston.
Richard Goode, piano Thursday, February 23 and Friday, February 24, 2017 7:30 p.m. Kimbell Art Museum Piano Pavilion His music making is the stuff of legend: tremendous emotional power, depth, and expressiveness. Richard Goode “impresses…better than we remembered, surprising us, surpassing our expectations and communicating perceptions that stay in the mind” (Gramophone). He returns to Fort Worth with a recital of Bach and Chopin.

Sean Chen, piano Thursday, September 22, 2016 7:30 p.m. Kimbell Art Museum Piano Pavilion Third-prize winner at the 2013 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Sean Chen “has an exceptional ability to connect with an audience combined with an easy virtuosity” (Huffington Post). His “alluring, colorfully shaded” (The New York Times) performances worldwide have yielded a global fan base, and his talent has been recognized as “One to Watch” by International Piano magazine.
Behzod Abduraimov, piano Thursday, November 10, 2016 7:30 p.m. Kimbell Art Museum Piano Pavilion Unite charisma with “fingers that seem as though they were made to create rainbows” (Los Angeles Times), and you’ve got Behzod Abduraimov. A former student of 2001 Cliburn winner Stanislav Ioudenitch, the in-demand touring artist has gone on to perform in the world’s music capitals and with conductors such as James Gaffigan, Vladimir Ashkenazy, and Valery Gergiev—and now makes his Cliburn Concerts debut.
Avi Avital, mandolin Kenneth Weiss, harpsichord Thursday, February 9, 2017 7:30 p.m. Kimbell Art Museum Piano Pavilion Critics have marveled about Avi Avital’s “exquisitely sensitive playing” and “stunning agility” (The New York Times) on the mandolin. The Grammy®-nominated musician—who was the first mandolinist to ever receive the honor—has talent that knows no bounds. His first appearance in North Texas, with noted harpsichordist Kenneth Weiss, is sure to be a showcase of stellar strings.

“American Piano” Saturday, October 8, 2016 2:00 p.m. Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth In this afternoon performance, six North Texas pianists will take on diverse works written for the piano in the last 20 years, from Jennifer Higdon to John Corigliano; William Bolcom to Radiohead. Great American composers get the great American pianist treatment.
Gabriela Lena Frank, composer Saturday, April 1, 2017 2:00 p.m. Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth “With each new piece, Frank becomes a more exciting and necessary voice,” the Los Angeles Times has said about the composer, who is inspired by the works of both Bela Bartók and Alberto Ginastera. A musical anthropologist, Gabriela Lena Frank’s work is at once identity-focused—her mother is of mixed Peruvian/Chinese ancestry and her father of Lithuanian/Jewish descent—yet keenly globally minded.

Japanese pianist Tomoki Sakata “demonstrated virtuosity, considerable color and expressivity” (The Dallas Morning News) during the 2013 Cliburn Competition, earning him a place among the top six finalists. Just 22 years old, he is known for a “youthful overabundance of talent” that creates “its own visceral excitement” (Theater Jones).
With “instinctive musicality, unflappable technical command and a sensitive ear for nuance” (Gramophone), Claire Huangci is developing a reputation as one of the most expressive performers of her generation. A recipient of a 2013 Cliburn Competition Jury Discretionary Award, she’s received widespread acclaim, including Gramophone’s Editor’s Choice for her latest recording.
Conrad Tao, piano Thursday, January 19, 2017 8:00 p.m. Live Oak Music Hall & Lounge The prodigiously talented Conrad Tao is an “explosive force,” with a “hefty dash of charm” (The Baltimore Sun), who has appeared worldwide as a pianist and composer since age 4. With repertoire ranging from Bach to Julia Wolfe, his performances showcase his “probing intellect and openhearted vision” (The New York Times).

Cliburn at the Bass: Tickets to Hilary Hahn are available now only as an add-on for subscribers to one of the other series. Subscribers receive priority seating in their chosen pricing level. You will be seated in or near your seats from last season. If you are new or interested in moving seats, please note your request on your order form, and we’ll do our best to fulfill. Keyboard Circle members have the opportunity to purchase in the special seating sections and also are invited to an intermission reception in the Green Room.
Free parking is available at all Cliburn Concerts venues.
Cliburn at the Kimbell: All Cliburn at the Kimbell concerts are now sold as reserved seating throughout the venue. Please note section and seating preferences on the order form. Keyboard Circle members have the option to purchase reserved seating and receive intermission drink vouchers. For the Masters series, please note Thursday or Friday. Cliburn at the Modern: All tickets are general admission. Cliburn Sessions: All tickets are general admission. Seating is on a first come, first served basis.
Cliburn at the Bass: 777 Main Parking Garage, located directly south of Bass Performance Hall at Commerce and 5th Streets. You may enter the garage starting at 6 p.m. from either 5th or 6th Streets between Commerce and Calhoun. Parking for Cliburn patrons begins on Level 3. If asked, please show your tickets to the garage attendant to verify that you are attending the concert. Cliburn at the Kimbell and Modern: Use museum and street parking. Cliburn Sessions: Use Live Oak and street parking.
