The Cliburn advances classical piano music throughout the world. Its international competitions, education programs, and concert series embody an enduring commitment to artistic excellence and the discovery of young artists
As we look back on any Cliburn cycle, success is defined by the contribution the organization’s efforts and activities have made to classical music’s place in society. Has the Cliburn been a force for innovation, reaching new audiences and touching more lives? Has it provided key, defining support to artists that matches the extraordinary dedication they have given this artform? Has it elevated its role in North Texas and created inventive partnerships that help ensure classical music is woven into the fabric of our community, for all ages?
July 2022 was a momentous time for the Cliburn. The sixteenth edition of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition had just launched a new superstar, the likes of which the world hasn’t seen in quite some time; you’ll—not surprisingly—read more about Yunchan Lim’s meteoric three years within this report. The building reputation and brand of the Cliburn, alongside his immense popularity, grew the online audience exponentially. And there was some post-Covid catch up to do: the delay of the professional competition from 2021 to 2022 meant this cycle would be truncated from four years to three, and the postponed 2020 Amateur Competition would take place in October 2022, followed by the Junior (at its originally scheduled timing) in June 2023. Cliburn in the Classroom programs would importantly come back to full force, eventually exceeding pre-pandemic numbers. And new audiences developed for outside-of-thebox concert experiences were clamoring for more unique performances and performance spaces.
That’s how the scene was set. The following pages will show evidence of momentous growth and expansion. Online views have topped 100 million from 2022–2025. The Cliburn Agency, a boutique management firm, launched. Local audiences saw the addition of the Cliburn Family Concerts; Cliburn Sessions casual series moving to the Fort Worth Stockyards; and collaborations with community nonprofits that led to an expanded reach for free concerts. And the 2025 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition was a resounding win: Fort Worth was officially declared PianoTown, Apple Music Classical and Carnegie Hall+ came on as media partners, Sundance Square partnered to bring the biggest Finale Celebration yet—complete with fireworks!—and three new winners are now beginning meaningful touring careers, playing concerts around the world.
Welcome to our first ever Triennial Report to you, our stakeholders. This should be the last vestige of the COVID pandemic on our operations as we get back on track with our traditional four-year budget and planning cycle.
The Seventeenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition was eagerly anticipated across the planet, not only because it is considered the top event of its kind but, honestly, because the classical music world was curious how it would follow the Sixteenth, with its record-setting exposure and unprecedented talent in the finalists, including Yunchan Lim, Anna Geniushene, and Dmytro Choni. With the unprovoked Russian attack on Ukraine as our backdrop, the 2022 Cliburn had proven once again the power of music in international diplomacy, overcoming yet another war by bringing global citizens together in an embrace of love, peace, and mutual understanding. So how could we possibly follow that?
I am pleased to report that the 2025 version of the VCIPC never skipped a beat. The talent was unlike anything we have ever witnessed, across the board, with thrilling performances by 28 artists from 15 countries, witnessed by record audiences at the Van Cliburn Concert Hall at TCU, a sold-out Bass Performance Hall, and 30 million classical music lovers across 170 countries on our online platforms alone. Gold Medalist Aristo Sham of Hong Kong, China, Silver Medalist Vitaly Starikov of Israel/Russia, and Bronze Medalist Evren Ozel of the United States finally rose above this incredible field; the entire experience proved once again that classical piano music remains an irresistible force for light and beauty in an increasingly dark and fragile world.
But the “Big Cliburn” remains only one of many ways that our organization accomplished its mission over the past three years. The Third Cliburn Junior and the Eighth Cliburn Amateur Competitions were both produced during the 2022–2023 season, the 2022 Competition documentary Crescendo was launched on streaming platforms here and abroad, the Cliburn Agency was established with six artists on its roster, and the Cliburn Concerts series enjoyed its home at the Kimbell while Cliburn Sessions explored non-traditional venues at The Post, Tulips, Tannahill’s Music Hall, and Fort Brewery. The new Cliburn Family Concerts series successfully partnered with the Fort Worth Zoo, the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, and the Fort Worth Stockyards. And who can forget our Homecoming Concert, with 12 of our favorite artists under the stars at TX Whiskey Ranch?
And in one of the most unique and valuable efforts produced by this organization, Cliburn in the Classroom is back to full strength, bringing virtuosos in music and other scholarly disciplines, along with a grand piano, to 60,000 2nd-, 3rd-, and 4th-grade students annually in over 250 elementary schools across North Texas. Like you, I love all that the Cliburn stands for, but I put Cliburn in the Classroom in its own paragraph simply because of the chills I get any time I contemplate the reach and impact of this special program. Bravo!
The mission of the Cliburn is to advance classical music throughout the world, and that duty encompasses not only the finest piano competitions, but also the best educational and concert experiences produced anywhere. As patrons, volunteers, sponsors, and audience, I know you share my pride in all that our wonderful artistic family offers to our community, both locally and around the globe. Thank you for your support.
With love and deepest gratitude,
Jeffrey B. King Chairman of the Board 2017–2025
On May 20, 2025, Mayor Mattie Parker proclaimed the City of Fort Worth to be Pianotown for the duration of the Seventeenth Competition! This is a fantastic recognition to all the volunteers, staff, board members, and donors in Fort Worth who made the Cliburn “one of the most prestigious contests in classical music” (The New York Times, June 2022).
Presented the first time in 1962, in honor and celebration of Van Cliburn’s talent and vision, the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition exists to launch the careers of exceptional young pianists and bring classical music to the largest audience possible. Today, more than 60 years later, the Cliburn is still promoting young musicians and building their careers, and it is now reaching people around the globe through multiple competitions, programs, activities, and digital channels.
In the last three years, we successfully presented the Amateur Competition (2022), the Junior Competition (2023), and the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition (2025). We managed the careers of three winners and also the six artists of the newly formed Cliburn Agency. We presented more than 800 concerts in the school districts around North Texas in front of more than 150,000 students. We invited more than 70 international and national artists to our different series of concerts: Cliburn Concerts, Cliburn in the Community, Cliburn Sessions, Cliburn Family Concerts, and Cliburn Kids on the Road.
The Cliburn reaches more and more people every year. Total online viewership from mid-2022 to mid-2025 topped 100 million, with people from 200 countries watching the artists who have graced our competition stages. This cycle also saw two major releases: the documentary Crescendo, about the 2022 Competition, and the commercial album (DECCA) of Yunchan Lim’s historic Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 3.
Partnerships are vital to any advances. Over these three years, we have worked with Amadeus (China), YouTube (all over the world), Medici (Europe), Mezzo (Europe), Carnegie Hall (US), Apple Music Classical (UK). And, most importantly, we also collaborated with many Fort Worth organizations: Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, Bass Performance Hall, TCU, Sundance Square, Zoo, Botanic Garden, Stock Show, Junior League, Stockyards, Justin Brands, Museums (Kimbell, Modern, Carter, Science & History), and so many more!
To our donors, volunteers, board members, supporters, audiences—THANK YOU! The Cliburn is lucky to have the support of this community, and we are proud of continuing the vision of this extraordinary man that was Van Cliburn. A special thanks to all the artists, you inspire us to be the best in everything we do because you are the best of what YOU do! With the support of this entire community, we are happy to provide this extraordinary local, regional, national, and international platform to share your music, your talent, and your vision. Our reward is to see you embracing every moment of it! Thank you to the board members, the executive committee members, and the finance and trust committees members for their dedication and professionalism. A special thanks to our outgoing chairman, Jeff King, who was there and standing up during the different storms during these past eight years.
My heartfelt thanks to the Cliburn team. The work that we do collectively makes the Cliburn one of the best and known artistic organizations in the world. Thank you for the work, the joy of working together, the ideas, the discussions, and the many coffees (and drinks) shared over the last three years! And let’s go for 2025–2029!

The Cliburn now puts this foundation of expertise to work for its Agency roster:
• Decades of experience providing artist management services
• Long-standing relationships with industry leaders, artists, presenters, and journalists
• Internationally known brand and reputation in the industry

The initial Cliburn Agency roster comprises Anderson & Roe Piano Duo; pianists Greg Anderson, Peter Dugan, Fei-Fei, and Clayton Stephenson; and harpist Bridget Kibbey. From intriguing programming and projects to alternative concerts and community engagement, these touring musicians are dedicated to connection and creativity— and they are partnering with the Cliburn to enhance and magnify their careers, efforts, and impact.

And then 2024 saw the launch of the much-anticipated Cliburn Family Concerts, which brought delightful experiences for kids and their parents at the Fort Worth Zoo, Stockyards Station, and Fort Worth Museum of Science & History.

In the spirit of the season, let’s give thanks for this 20-year-old pianist from South Korea. On Wednesday at Geffen Hall, Lim played in the spotlight as if he’d been doing it for decades, with such imperturbable calm and eloquence that it was hard to believe that two and a half years ago he was essentially unknown.

On May 20, 2025, Mayor Mattie Parker proclaimed the City of Fort Worth to be Pianotown for the duration of the Seventeenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition! And the city transformed to welcome pianists and visitors from around the world—and to celebrate classical music as intrinsic to its culture. Painted crosswalks and street banners, piano lights atop City Hall, and a two-day Grand Finale with our major partner Sundance Square (pictured at left) were major highlights. And new this Competition: more than 50 restaurants, bars, and shops around the city signed on to be Official Stops on our Passport to Pianotown, with many offering piano-themed menu items or even offers special to the Cliburn Family.
