Lutheran High School West Drama presents

STAGE MANAGER'S NOTES

Welcome to the mysterious, creepy, kooky, and

altogether ooky world of the Addams Family! In a story of star-crossed lovers, we see the joining of two polar opposite families, the Addams and Beinekes. When the only son of the Beinekes, Lucas, and the daughter of the Addams, Wednesday, meet, it is love at first sight. This story tells the ups and downs of the “abnormal” Addams and the all too “normal” Beinekes and how they will see eye to eye. The matriarch of the Addams, Morticia, along with her avant-garde husband, Gomez, will tackle the idea of the loss of their daughter to a world of normalcy. At the same time, Mal and Alice, Lucas’s parents, struggle to view the world outside of what they have always known. With interference from Wednesday’s brother Pugsley and his pet hand, antics from Gomez’s brother Fester, the zombie butler, Lurch, the potion-making Grandma, and a walking hairball; everyone is in for a wild ride! The story of love and romance dives into the lessons on change, acceptance, truth, the definition of normal, and, of course, the importance of family. This Lutheran West production is unique in nature, because for the first time ever, a lead role (Gomez Addams) was double-casted. This made practices more interesting and challenging, as each time we practiced a scene, a different actor would play Gomez. It has certainly kept actors and directors on our toes! Both actors playing Gomez have a unique performance, and we hope you have the opportunity to see both! On behalf of the cast and crew, we thank you for attending and/or viewing Lutheran West Drama’s production of The Addams Family!

PLAYHOUSE SQUARE'S DAZZLE AWARDS PROGRAM Throughout the 2020-2021 school year, Lutheran West Drama participated in Playhouse Square’s Dazzle Awards program for its third consecutive year. This program provides several of our students with once-in-a-lifetime experiences with actors, directors, technicians, and mentors from the Cleveland local area to Broadway professionals. Below are some of their accounts: “I had the honor of attending the Shakespeare Workshop this year. Through it, I had an amazing experience and truly learned more about the enchanting world of William Shakespeare. Before the workshop, I wasn’t ever properly introduced to how to deliver a Shakespeare monologue or how to bring life to his aged literature. However, coming out of the workshop, I had learned about bringing punctuation into his plays and sonnets, about patterns that can be found in his pieces of written artwork, and about understanding the text in the fascinating type of ancient English. If given the chance to attend another workshop such as this one, I would definitely jump on that opportunity.” - Anna Van Farowe ‘24 “For the Playhouse Square Dazzle Awards audition workshops, we were asked to prepare two songs: a ballad and an uptempo of contrasting characters, and perform them for judges. They gave us feedback on how to improve so that when our audition date came, we could perform to the best of our ability. We were given the opportunity to compete for a Lead Actor/Actress Dazzle Award. Being able to participate in the Playhouse Square Dazzle Awards audition workshops the last three years has been one of the best experiences of my life. As someone who loves theatre and loves competition, this program provided me extra motivation to do my very best. It also gave me a new appreciation for the art. Not only was performing for professionals and receiving feedback incredible, but being able to see peers from schools across the county perform and show their talents was better than anything I could’ve imagined. The safe space provided for us to be ourselves and shine in our own way was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.” - Anthony Ghali ‘21

“Working with the Dazzle Awards program is such a blessing and honor. I learned so much in just one session with Malik Akil. He taught me a lot of tips that I’m currently using to better myself with acting and singing. The environment was such a positive motivation. My peers and I really enjoyed our time there and this experience is something we will never forget.” - Justin Rivera ‘21

Rachel

“I took a class in which we worked with a Broadway actor and learned the choreography for 'My Shot' from Hamilton. I learned a couple of things during this class; one big thing being that the energy you bring to your performance is really important - it determines how much the audience will be involved with the show. Also, that dance is

Justin

really just different moves and turns; that is, until you add character and liveliness to it - that’s what engages the connection with the audience and moves the story along. The choreographer also made it very clear that everyone picks up choreography at different paces, which I think is really important to remember. The choreographer shared some of his experiences with Broadway, and what he learned after all the shows he’d been in, which I thought was really cool. The class overall just made me love dance even more, and I’m really glad I got the opportunity to take part in it.” -Rachel Haggard ‘23

Anthony

The Dazzle Awards will take place virtually on June 1st at 7 PM. Senior Anthony Ghali (Gomez Addams/ Lurch) is nominated for Best Actor in a Musical. Tune in then to watch Anthony perform, as well as Ricky Carrucini and Maddie Jonas!

RICARDO CARRUCINI

Roles in The Addams Family: Gomez Addams (Saturday), Lurch (Friday & Sunday), & Grim Reaper Previous Productions: You Can’t Beat the House, The Sound of Music, Fiddler on the Roof, Newsies From Ricky: My favorite thing about Lutheran West Drama is the insane ride that always happens just to get from point A to point B with the show. The type of love and friends I have met would have never happened if I hadn't taken an interest in the program. Frau and Zehnder have always kept me wanting to come back for more with visions that they make into reality. To put on a mask and portray a character in another world is amazing. Drama appeals to everyone and those who become involved don't regret it. I want thank: my dad - he is a man I will forever look up to; my mother who always has good intentions; Abby Mack and Justin who stick with me and push me to be my very best. Finally, thank you to my sister for spending my last year with me and having my trust and bond that nothing can break. I am hoping to go to Puerto Rico next year, perfect my Spanish, and apply to Tri-C for their trade school.

JULIAN CROFT

Role in The Addams Family: Set Construction Previous Productions: Newsies From Julian: My favorite part about Lutheran West Drama is the people I have met along the way. everyone on a deeper level and form friendships that can last a lifetime. Thank you to: Adam and Frau for consistently helping to inspire faith in me; fellow senior drama kids who have stuck together through adverse situations; my family for dealing with tough scheduling and the stress I would sometimes bring home with me. Thank you to Lutheran West for being home away from home for 4 years and helping me in the process of becoming a Christian. Next year, I will attend Tri-C with plans to save money and then transfer.

day, and ended up making my entire week. Thank you everyone who has the courage to spread an ounce of kindness in a world where it's really hard to show it. I plan to attend Kent State Geauga and the Twinsburg Academic Center in the fall, then work my way to KSU main campus. I plan on taking a year to decide what I want to major in, but I'm thinking Theatre, Creative Writing, Film Production, Acting, or Graphic Art.

CAST MEMBER PERSPECTIVES ON LUTHERAN WEST DRAMA I grew up in a close community my entire life. I had always gone to the same school, same church, and I knew the same people. Things finally started to change as I neared high school. Was I excited for change? If I am being honest, no. What gave my life consistency vanished. Childhood friends and neighbors moved away, my church shifted leadership positions within it, and I was going to go to the same high school as my siblings had. With all of this, I thought consistency would come from bringing back something old, but I didn’t realize it would come with something new. I joined Lutheran West Drama mainly because my brother was still participating and I wanted a familiar face when trying out something new. However, I ended up making connections with so many more people than I could have ever imagined. For a while, I thought that Lutheran West had been exactly what I expected near the beginning. No one seemed to have developed relationships that were beneficial. When I ended up partaking in theater, I saw that I was incredibly wrong. Every single day, I see people having meaningful conversations and purposefully reaching out to one another in order to find deeper friendships. There are group conversations held about progress and striving to be better. I can now understand how Lutheran West Drama changed my siblings’ lives because it has had a large impact on me as well. Drama was a welcoming setting that allowed me to create the healthy stability I needed back in my life and I will forever be grateful. I hope that as I continue on, that I am able to see others join and be a part of the same experiences I have been able to. I am thrilled to be able to have more people join in on an improv game, give their best shot at a monologue, or perform on stage with us. However, more importantly, I anticipate the moments where I get to see someone break from their shell, genuinely give advice, or smile for the first time that day. (continued at top of following page)

These are all things my friends and I have been able to share together. With them, and these new memories I created, I realized that Drama is something that could never move across the country and it will be something people take part in long after I leave Lutheran West as well. Offering solidarity and a family to anyone who needs or wants it. I am very thankful to be a participant in a community that is so lasting and meaningful.

- ALEXANDRA LOPEZ, CLASS OF 2023 January 20, 2021 - Addams Family Audition Day: I opened the doors to the auditorium anxiously, as a new student who had never been in drama before, let alone been in a musical. As I made my way toward a seat, all I could do was stare at the ground. To keep my nerves in check, I sat with my hands folded and played with my thumbs. The pep talk I gave myself on the way to the audition went into one ear and out the other. As auditions started, all I could do was admire the talent that the people in front of me had. When I was called to perform, I got up from my seat and with every step closer to the stage my heart beat harder and harder. I finally made it to the spot to perform. I looked up at the audience and instantly I felt small. The smallness, which started in my heart, would end up spreading to my head. Then I felt as if in an instant it was over. All I could feel was embarrassment due to the lackluster performance that I had just put on. I began my walk of shame back towards my seat. With each step my face grew hotter and hotter. Then something that I didn’t expect happened: when I stepped off the stage, the people auditioning along with me showered me with love and support. They restored my confidence and it was at this moment that I fell in love. This is what the drama family is all about. A group of loving, gifted, and compassionate people. They have hearts of gold and will accept anyone with welcoming arms. These are some of the best people I have ever met. This family is now my family. Life is full of the unknown and is often masked in fear. Generally speaking, venturing into the unknown requires a leap of faith. When I made my venture into the unknown (drama); it frightened me. But then I quickly realized that all it takes is one step into the unknown and then it is no longer that. Each step forward becomes something more familiar and you never know what each step may lead to. I was a lucky one; my leap of faith found me another family. I am so thankful for this program and experience.

- JACOB RENTAS, CLASS OF 2023

COSTUME DESIGN FOR THE ADDAMS FAMILY Year after year, Lutheran West Drama's costume team delivers spectacular costumes for our stage productions. In 2019, they were nominated for a Dazzle Award in Best Costume Design for Fiddler on the Roof. This year, they had the exciting task of recreating the iconic costumes of The Addams Family, as well as creating the ancestor costumes. The following interview about the costume team and process is with talented student costumers, Stephanie Springsteel (sophomore), and Isabella Simon (junior). Q: When did you start making costumes for LW Drama? Stephanie: I started last spring, with Newsies. Isabella: This is my third year doing costumes! Q: What made you interested in making costumes? S: Cosplay. I wanted to learn how to do more stuff. I make costumes of characters I admire and wear them around the house or to wizarding conventions. I: I have always loved sewing, and I loved making things and being creative. Q: When did you first learn how to sew? S: I learned how to hand-sew at the age of 7 or 8, when my dog chewed through my American Girl doll. No one showed me how to sew; I just figured it out. I did a very wonky job! At one point, I was cutting apart my stuffed animals and sewing them back together for practice.

I: My mom taught me to thread a needle, but I am mostly self-taught (in hand sewing) prior to taking sewing class at LW. Q: What about learning to use the sewing machine? S: I learned how to use the machine last year while making newsboy bags for Newsies. I was scared at first. Our sewing machine at home is kind of loud, and I was always told not to touch it. Now it’s mine. I took sewing class this past fall; it helped a lot, because now I know how to do things properly. Last year, I was hand-sewing a 34 ½ foot scarf out of stretch fabric. It took me 2 ½ months. You can sew that on a machine in minutes. I: I learned how to use a sewing machine in Mrs. Greco’s sewing class. Q: What do you like about being on the costumes team? S: The vibe of the group. Also, making costumes is like putting puzzle pieces together, and then you get to see the item being worn on stage. Q: What are some items you made for The Addams Family? S: Morticia’s dress, the Puritan dress and Cleopatra’s dress. I was nervous about the stretch fabric for Morticia’s dress, but it wasn’t bad. Q: What is your favorite costume item that you have made? I: Although I was one of several people to contribute to it, I loved Medda Larkin’s dress from Newsies.
