CLHSA Announces Addition of Lutheran Scholarship Granting Organization of Ohio The Cleveland Lutheran High School Association (CLHSA) is pleased to announce the launch of the Lutheran Scholarship Granting Organization of Ohio.

The LSGO of Ohio’s purpose is to raise scholarship dollars for students to attend Lutheran high schools and elementary schools throughout Ohio. The LSGO of Ohio’s scholarships will primarily be awarded to low-income students whose household income is under 300% of the poverty threshold. Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs) were just recently brought into existence in the most recent Ohio legislative session.

Contributors to the LSGO of Ohio will be given a tax credit for their contributions; the tax credit will be able to be applied to their Ohio state income tax liability, dollar-for-dollar, up to $750. Pending regulations from the State of Ohio’s Attorney General’s Office, it is not yet clear whether this tax credit will be available in 2021, or if the program will not commence until 2022.

The CLHSA has hired Dr. Randall W. Luecke, CPA as the Executive Director of the LGSO of Ohio. Luecke has an extensive background in the financial industry, having most recently held the position of CFO at Odle Management Group, LLC. From 2013 through 2020, he was CFO and Treasurer at Clearwater, FL-based Eckerd Connects, a $325 million not-for-profit organization.

Additionally, Luecke served as Acting President & CFO of Concordia University in Ann Arbor, MI from 2010-2013. Luecke’s resume also includes C-level executive positions at CSA International / OnSpeX (Cleveland, OH), CSA Group (Toronto, Canada), CSA America Inc. (Cleveland, OH), and St. Alexis Hospital Medical Center (Cleveland, OH), as well as work at Deloitte & Touche, KMG Main Hurdman, and Ernst & Whinney.

He holds a BA in Business Administration from McMaster University, an MBA in Business Administration from Lehigh University, and an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from Concordia University Ann Arbor. Luecke maintains 13 professional certifications in the fields of finance, IT, accounting and human resources. He is a frequent lecturer and author for accounting, financial, and HR journals, with over 70 articles published in 25 different publications. He has served on the boards of Evolution Insurance Company, Pioneer Insurance Company, and the Thrivent Member Network Board for the Southeastern Region. He served in an editorial capacity for Strategic Finance and The Ohio CPA Journal. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Institute of Management Accounting.

A MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT & CEO

I have always loved Psalm 136. If you’re not familiar with it, I invite you to take a few minutes to read it over. It is a retelling of God’s saving work in bringing the people of Israel out of Egypt and into the promised land of Canaan. But it is far more than just a historical retelling. After each act of God, the Psalmist includes the phrase “His faithful love endures forever.” By the end of the poem, the reader has seen “His faithful love endures forever” twenty-six times!

You can imagine the people using it as a liturgy of praise, reminding themselves that God’s faithful love is what has provided for them-and then it points them forward, knowing that the same faithful love of God will continue to provide for them in the days to come.

For nearly 75 years, the schools of the Cleveland Lutheran High School Association have seen and felt the faithful, enduring love of our God. It can be seen in how He brought the Lutheran community together to establish the downtown school and in the Lutheran Veterans who helped provide the space for it. He was faithful in providing great land in Cleveland Heights and Rocky River when the State of Ohio wanted the downtown land. Through incredible highs and real lows over the ensuing decades, God’s faithfulness has allowed us to provide excellent educational opportunities to students while pointing those students to their faithful Savior.

The 2020-2021 school year was among the most challenging that our schools have ever seen. Yet despite all of the challenges that COVID-19 brought to us, our schools managed to finish the year in a stronger position than they were in before COVID existed-His faithful love endures forever. Lutheran West was the first high school to open for in-person education in Northeast Ohio this past fall. His faithful love endures forever. All of our students had the ability to attend school in person or to attend live online each day throughout the school year. His faithful love endures forever. At a time when many teachers around the country fought to avoid in-person education, our teachers pushed themselves to learn new technology so that they could teach students in person and remotely at the same time. His faithful love endures forever. We put on two full musical productions at Lutheran West and streamed them around the world. His faithful love endures forever. All 24 sports teams of the CLHSA had full seasons in which students participated, with Lutheran East winning a state championship in Boys’ Basketball and having a Track & Field athlete winning an individual state championship. His faithful love endures forever. After a year without formal commencement ceremonies, our schools were both able to hold graduations in person with hundreds of family members there to support our amazing young men and women. His faithful love endures forever.

My hope is that, as you turn the pages of this 2021 Annual Report, you see God’s faithful love at work in the lives of our students. The communities that surround both of our schools are full of alumni, volunteers, and donors who give of their time, their treasure, and their efforts in ways that allow our students to grow and flourish. I pray that in these stories, you see how your support is changing lives through Christian education. The schools of the CLHSA finished the 2020-2021 school year incredibly blessed and we are poised to continue our growth in the years to come. Thank you for your support which helps to make our ministry successful. His faithful love endures forever!

Friendship Basketball How Childhood Friends Built Lutheran East into a State Powerhouse

There’s an old saying about keeping your friends close, but your enemies closer.

However, what happens when that enemy becomes a friend?

You build a dynasty.

To say that Lutheran High School East boys’ basketball head coach Sam Liggins ’05 and Athletic Director Anthony Jones got off on the right foot would be one way to put it.

A more accurate way could be to say that a right foot was close to being involved.

“The first time we met each other, we were actually about to fight,” Liggins said with a laugh. “It was over a basketball game and things got heated. After the game we exchanged words and we came close to fighting.”

Fast forward 17 years, and the best friends are the cornerstones of a basketball renaissance at Lutheran East —one that has seen two state titles (2017, 2021), a state runner-up (2019) and a final four berth (2018) in the seven years they have been coaching together. Put another way, the Falcons have been to Columbus (or, as of 2021, Dayton) four of the seven years Jones and Liggins have helmed the program, with only a statewide tournament cancellation due to COVID stopping the fifth year in 2020.

“We’ve built a resume,” Jones said. “Now we’re going to sustain that. We want to be known as a school with a rich basketball tradition. We want to make it so that the players we’re coaching now have kids and know that 13, 14, 15 years later they’re going to send their kids to Lutheran East. We want to be a place that, even in our worst years, it’s still a great year compared to others.

“We’re well on the path to making that a reality.”

From Panthers to Falcons That fateful near-fight happened in 2004 in Euclid, when Jones and Liggins were 15-year-old juniors at Euclid High School. At the time, neither boy knew that they had just met their best friend.

“It’s weird,” Liggins said. “Ask me in that moment and I would have thought I’d never speak to him again. I definitely never would’ve imaged we would be where we are now and as close as we’ve been since that moment.”

Liggins, who had attended private school at St. John South Euclid and Cornerstone Christian Academy until his transfer to Euclid as a junior, believes that the altercation now feels like a natural way for their friendship to start.

“It just makes sense, right? We met on a basketball court,” Liggins said.

It was only a matter of time before the pair realized that their frustrations about what happened on the court weren’t a difference, but rather an identical passion for the game of basketball and wanting to be successful. Once that clicked, there was no looking back.

However, the closeness of their friendship has not always translated to physical location. After one year at Euclid, Liggins transferred to Lutheran East for his senior year because he believed it was best for his basketball future.

“I knew I wanted to do something after high school as far as playing basketball went,” Liggins said. “I knew after my year at Euclid that I needed to make a change if that was going to happen. That’s how I ended up spending my senior year at Lutheran East.”

The duo remained tight even without attending the same school, spending as much free time together as possible.

“He was pretty much at my house all the time,” Liggins said. “He’d spend the night like every other day, and we’d spend the entire weekend together.”

Liggins thrived at Lutheran East. He was named the Ohio AP Division IV Player of Year, averaging 21.4 points, 9.2 assists and 5.7 steals per game, while leading the Falcons to their first-ever state championship in 2005. Although the title was mired in some controversy.

“We actually lost that state championship game,” Liggins said. “A week after we lost,

it was reported that the team we played, Columbus Africentric, played two ineligible players. They had to forfeit all the games those players were in, which was most of their playoff run including the state championship. So, we were awarded the title.”

Looking back, Liggins believes it was almost a case of a story coming full circle for the Falcons.

“The year before I got there, Lutheran East had to forfeit their entire season,” Liggins said. “They had played some players that were ineligible. It’s pretty crazy to think that what happened the year before I got there was happening again, but this time in our favor. And I think it goes to show that doing things the wrong way won’t pay off.”

Through it all, Jones watched as his friend experienced the success.

“I could not believe the run that they went on,” Jones said. “Jealous would probably be the word. I’m watching everything on the TV or in the stands, you know? But even then, I was just happy for him. He worked so hard for that. Before he even knew he was going to Lutheran East, he was working hard. He knew hard work was going to get him there and he wasn’t going to ever let them lose because he was outworked. I was so proud of him when they went to that final and proud to be his friend.”

After high school, the two briefly reconnected as classmates at Lakeland College before Jones continued to Ohio State and a job as the Sports Director for the Greater Cleveland YMCA while also serving as an assistant varsity coach at Euclid High School.

Liggins moved on to Alderson Broaddus University in West Virginia, where he still ranks as one of the best to play for the Battlers. As of the end of the 2020-21 season, Liggins holds singleseason ranks of second for field goals attempted (466), 3-pointers attempted (300), and 3-pointers made (129), fifth for points (602), fourth for made field goals (217), and eighth for scoring average (18.2). He followed up his career with four years of professional basketball overseas.

Through it all, though, Jones and Liggins made time for each other.

“You know, we weren’t in the same city anymore, but we still saw each other all the time,” Jones said. “He was coming up to Ohio State on weekends, spring break, whenever he could make it happen. He’d stay in my dorm with me and we just always tried to make sure we were going home around the same time. We made sure distance wasn’t a problem and stayed connected.”

It’s that very connection that drew them back together when Ron Calhoun resigned as Lutheran East’s boys’ basketball coach in 2014.

“Lutheran East wanted an alumus who cared about the school and had a basketball background that would attract people to Lutheran East. Clearly, I check those boxes, right?” Jones said with a laugh. “They had Sam in mind, but when they reached out to him, he recommended me. I think he was worried about his qualifications at that point and really sold me as a great option.”

“You know, it’s kind of funny. I couldn’t tell you how many summer jobs or little things we’ve worked on together over the years. It just kind of makes sense that we’d make a career at the same school and work together now.”

“Ron Calhoun was my coach from fifth grade at St. John through my freshman and sophomore years at Cornerstone Christian,” Liggins said. “I know he had put in a word that I could be a good fit to replace him.

“But Lutheran East needed a big change.

I was pretty sure I could make that happen, but I was worried they might want someone with more experience. That’s why I told Anthony he should go for the job, and that I would come with him.”

The coaching job was just the beginning for Jones, who was also offered the position of Athletic Director by then-principal Chris Steinmann ’00.

“It was that next day [that I was offered the coaching job],” Jones said of becoming Athletic

I’m so thankful for the opportunities that I’ve been given, but, man, I didn’t realize then just how much responsibility came with being an Athletic Director.”

it to regional play twice since winning it all, including a state semifinal appearance in 2009.

However, the program Jones inherited was far from a state contender. In fact, it wasn’t even a district contender.

Lutheran East had won only three games in the 2013-14 season and hadn’t advanced out of sectional play—the first two rounds of the eight-game state tournament—in three years.

“It was bad,” Jones said. “We were honestly taking over one of the worst teams in Ohio. And I don’t say that lightly, but it was definitely not an ideal situation to take over unless you had a plan to turn everything around.”

Rebuilding the Falcons would involve a full culture and mindset shift that could take years. Being from the area, Jones knew that some good talent would be heading to Lutheran East soon. Talent, however, was just one piece of the puzzle. How to get that talent to play to its potential was where Liggins thrived.

“He’s out there working with the kids. He doesn’t just stand there and watch. If they’re doing a drill, he does it with them. He’s out there actively teaching them the skills they need to thrive at basketball. Without him doing that, who knows where the program would be.”

The result? A first-round Ohio High School Athletic Association playoff exit—but certainly a large step in the right direction.

The plan was to craft Lutheran East into a perennial state title contender, and while a double-digit win season was a great first step, playing tough competition in the regular season and advancing in the playoffs would be next.

That’s exactly what happened in the second year under Jones.

The Falcons went 20-5, advancing to a D-IV regional final before bowing out to Cornerstone Christian.

The Falcons were 20-9 in the 2016-17 season. Jones believes that it was the nine losses—all but one of which came against Division I or II opponents—that truly spurred Lutheran East to the title.

The Falcons’ mindset and approach had changed. From there, it was only a matter of time before a state title was in the mix.

However, Jones may have been the only one expecting what happened next.

“That was one of the things I knew we had to do,” Jones said.

“We had to kind of fast-track the players development by putting them in games that we honestly knew we’d probably lose going in. We wanted to play St. Ed’s, St. Ignatius, Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary. We didn’t get them from the start, but I knew getting D-II and D-I teams on our schedule was going to be a big key to our development as a program.”

Birth of a Dynasty

“It was unbelievable and kind of surreal,” Jones said. “We had a plan. When I took over, I told Chris Steinmann that we were going to win a state title by Year 3. That was our goal.”

The Falcons made another run for the title in 2018, advancing to the Division III State Final Four after being pushed a division higher due to the OHSAA’s new competitive balance initiative.

Lutheran East lost to eventual state champion Cincinnati Deer Park to finish the season at 14-14.

March 25, 2017, at around 4 p.m., the Falcons earned their second state title, defeating Columbus Wellington, 43-38, to cap Jones’ third year in charge of Lutheran East’s program.

For Jones, it was an experience like none other—made better only by the fact that he and his best friend were sitting side-by-side.

“We cried like babies,” Jones said. “I watched him win that 2005 title over a decade ago and always kind of wondered what it was like to be there. In that moment, I knew what it was like, and to see Sam smiling and celebrating with me, with the team—it made an already great moment even more memorable.”

For Liggins, it was a moment to reflect on his journey, while watching and helping a friend achieve the goal of an elite-level high school basketball program.

“You’re in the books. You get to have a banner in the gym,

go on the OHSAA site and see that you were the champion,” Liggins said. “It was incredible to share this moment with him.

Anytime you get to share your best moments with a loved one is an incredible gift.”

Among those losses on the Falcons’ schedule were Division I powerhouses Lorain, St. Edward, and St. Ignatius.

“In those years we were still on the rise and kind of under the radar. It was easy to overlook us,” Jones said. “If you didn’t look at our schedule and see what we were doing, you’d wonder how we got there. But we knew there would be times where our record didn’t reflect how good our team was and that our regular season schedule would be tougher at times than the postseason run.”

Jones, however, knew that a change was coming.

“I was ready to hand it over after the state title,” Jones said.

“Like I said before, being an Athletic Director is very time consuming, and it was getting to the point where I had to make a change. With all that Sam was doing in

practices and his leadership ability, I told him that I absolutely thought he was the guy who had to take the program over.

“We had won the state title and really done everything I had hoped to accomplish. And I think I loved being an Athletic Director maybe even more than being a coach.”

Liggins, however, wasn’t as sure that he was ready. He initially turned Jones down and tried to convince him to stay on longer.

It wasn’t until Jones applied some pressure that Liggins knew he had to step up.

“I flat out told him that I was going to step down and he had a choice to make,” Jones said. “He could let the program and what we’ve worked hard on go to someone else who may have a different vision, or he could keep Lutheran East basketball relevant and one of the top programs in the state. In a way, I kind of forced him into it, but sometimes you just see that someone can be great at something, and you need to give them that push for them to see it themselves.”

“It’s always something Anthony wanted for me, but I never

wanted to be a head coach,” Liggins said. “He told me that if I didn’t take it, someone else would. I couldn’t let that happen. This is home for me. So, I knew I had to take over to keep what we had built moving forward.”

In the end, it was a foregone conclusion that Liggins would take over. Just as Jones had supported Liggins for all his major life achievements, Liggins was ready to be there for his friend as Jones was recently married and about to welcome a second child into the world.

“He’s supported me through so much,” Liggins said. “There’s no way I wasn’t going to help him by stepping up when he told me it was now or never.”

A New Challenge Liggins’ first task as head coach was to figure out how to keep the Falcons a top-tier program when the element of surprise was no longer there. After all, that’s what happens the state continually sees “Cleveland Heights Lutheran East” at the top of AP polls, All-Ohio teams, and on the list of teams heading to the State Final Four.

“You get to a point where the surprise is gone,” Liggins said. “We’re at that point. People know Lutheran East is going to be a tough game.

Big schools want to play us. We get every team’s best every time we step onto the court, but we take that and use it as fuel.”

In his first season in charge, the Falcons went 22-9 and finished as the Division III state runner-up. Then came the season that no one could prepare him to coach.

Bumped up to D-II because of competitive balance, the Falcons were viewed by many as the best team in Ohio regardless of division.

Lutheran East was well on its way to proving that, advancing to regional play following a 68-46 district final win over Glenville.

Then came 12:56 p.m. on March 12, 2020.

And just like that, the run was over.

“That one hurt,” Liggins said. “It was completely deflating. I feel like that team was the best we’ve ever had come through Lutheran East. Not even just on talent, but the character of the kids. That was a tough few days.”

Liggins knew that when they returned to the court for the 2021 season, the Falcons had to finish the job—not only for themselves, but for the seniors who lost their final shot.

“Those seniors were cheated,” Liggins said. “It’s what had to happen, but they had a moment stolen from them due to something outside of everyone’s control. And that’s part of life. But they had been to Columbus all their years, and this was their time to lead the program to a title. That one hurts. I remember tearing up when I had to tell them what happened.”

Back in Division III in 2021, the Falcons played like a team with unfinished business. Lutheran East was 9-3 in the regular season with losses to eventual D-II state champion St. Vincent-St. Mary, D-II regional finalist Akron Buchtel and D-I regional qualifier St. Edward. They turned it up a notch in the playoffs, cruising through sectional, district and regional play by a 45.2 average margin of victory, twice breaking 100 points in the process.

The Falcons would complete the job by defeating OttawaGlandorf, 58-52, in a state semifinal before claiming the 2021 D-III state title with a 61-56 win over Worthington Christian. The win not only continued the streak of excellence for Lutheran East, but gave Liggins access to an exclusive club of winning a state title as a player, assistant coach, and head coach.

“It’s cool, but it really hasn’t hit me yet,” Liggins said. “It’s cool to see the development and to know that I’ve gotten to the top three times

in three different ways. A lot of people won’t ever get the chance to do that. And I’ve been fortunate to have the right people around me to help get to this point.”

And, just as Liggins had been there four years earlier, Jones was right there on the bench in Dayton, helping his best friend achieve a monumental victory.

“I thought it was just gratifying for him,” Jones said. “I don’t think people realized the weight that he was carrying on his shoulders to get it done. When we won the title in 2017, it kind of felt like people were wrongly overlooking how key he was. Now, no one could overlook how talented of a coach he is. He got his due and to be watching him through it all was something I’ll cherish forever.”

Seventeen years ago, two strangers nearly got in a fight.

Seventeen years later, two friends are continuing to fight—for their players, the continued success of Lutheran East boys’ basketball and the development of the Falcon athletic program as a whole.

“Every school has a sport that they are recognized for,” Jones said. “For us, it might be boys’ basketball, but that doesn’t mean boys’ basketball has to be the only success. One of the greatest things that I would like to achieve as an Athletic Director here at Lutheran East is to get all of our programs competing at high levels. If I can do that, it’s going to be tough ranking what I’m more proud of here: the boys’ basketball program or the growth of all our programs.” ■

Creating History

How Lutheran West Created First Girls’ Wrestling Team in the State

It’s often hard to pinpoint the exact moment history changes.

When it comes to the impending approval of girls’ wrestling as an Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) sanctioned sport, Lutheran West coach Dave Ressler ’86 can recite the exact phrase that started the movement.

“I will build a team around you before you graduate.”

Those are the words that Ressler said to then Our Lady of Angels 8th grader Allyssa Pirro ’21. Those are the words that changed everything.

“She came with her dad to watch a match,” Ressler said.

“I vividly remember walking up to the top of the stands, meeting them and saying, ‘If you come to Lutheran West, I will build a team around you before you graduate.’ I’ll admit I didn’t see it coming as fast as it did. I thought maybe we’d have a team her senior year, but I was determined to keep my word to her.”

While Pirro, now a freshman wrestler at Indiana Tech, admits that she doesn’t remember the exact moment, she remembers Ressler’s enthusiasm and knew he was a coach she wanted to wrestle for.

“I went to Lutheran West based on wrestling,” Pirro said.

“I definitely got a good education, but wrestling was the big thing for me. My junior high coaches told me it would be a good fit for me and that Coach Ressler was going to be a great coach for me. And after meeting him, I knew that they were right.

“Just seeing the amount of excitement that Coach Ressler had. He was excited anytime one of his wrestlers got a point.

He was excited to see the crowd there and made me feel welcome. Meeting him definitely made me realize I wanted to go to West.”

“My freshman year, I thought I’d be wrestling on the boys’ team all four years,” Pirro said. “There really wasn’t any interest from other girls, at least as far as I knew, and I just kind of figured that was how it was going to be. But I think me wrestling on the boys’ team and having good matches and being competitive is kind of what drew other girls in.

They saw what I was doing and thought they could, too. It’s like they didn’t want to take that first step until they saw me do it.”

The following year, Ressler and Pirro’s project gained four other girls— Alayna Lopez ’21, Hollis King ’21, Jaeyla Reyes ’22, and Promotional graphics used in the early Nevaeh Yarber ’22— stages of the surge in girls' wrestling and Ressler knew the across the United States time had come to officially form the first high school girls’ wrestling team in the state.

“I had heard that the Ohio Athletic Committee was going to expand its junior high girls’ tournament to include a high school girls’ tournament at the end of the season,” Ressler said.

“I knew then that it was the time. It was like everything was aligning. We had some interest from girls other than Allyssa, there was a postseason tournament for the girls to showcase their skills and we could accomplish it all with minimal impact on how the program was currently structured.”

Fast-forward four years. Pirro is now a one-time Ohio Athletic Committee (OAC) and two-time Ohio High School Wrestling Coaches Association (OHSWCA) girls’ state champion, representing Lutheran West, the first school to officially sanction a girls’ wrestling team in the state of Ohio.

Ressler’s talk with Lutheran West Athletic Director Ryan Miller was quite short. In fact, there were just two things Miller needed answered before he said yes: How much will it cost? And will it help draw students to Lutheran West?

“I always try to be the best that I can,” Pirro said. “It’s hard to think about my high school career without being proud of it. Being a two-time OHSWCA champion and an OAC champion is something that not many people can say they did.

I’m definitely very proud of it. And I’m proud that I did it while also wrestling boys during the regular season and helping to start a girls’ team. It’s really been a great four years.”

“I needed to know those things because there is a budget and I believe anything we do needs to help advance the school,” Miller said. “But I felt the same as Dave. He saw a great chance to give opportunity to a sport and for our student athletes, and I was excited about it. I’ll admit that I didn’t know a ton about it at first, but Dave was willing to handle a lot of it. I trust Dave and knew he was on to something special.”

Pirro joined the Longhorns as a member of the boys’ team for the 2017-18. If Ressler’s comment the year before was the moment history changed, Pirro’s freshman season is what started the movement’s momentum.

And just like that, the Longhorns made history.

“It’s amazing,” Pirro said. “Not only being the first team, but to have helped build it is just a great feeling. Now there are girls who’ve never tried wrestling who feel like there’s an 13

opportunity to try it. Being a member of the first girls' wrestling team in the state is a big honor, and I love knowing that’s part of my history.”

To confirm the rumors Ressler had heard, the OAC announced it would hold a girls’ wrestling state tournament to finish the 2019 season. While the Longhorns had the only official team in Ohio, there were still 245 girls in the state who wrestled at the high school level. Pirro claimed the 142-pound title, with Yarber placing sixth at 124.

Since that moment, the program has only grown. The team went from five wrestlers in 2019 to nine in 2020 and 17 in 2021.

That growth, though, was not limited to Lutheran West.

“That summer [after the OAC tournament], my phone was blowing up,” Ressler said. “Other coaches were calling to see how to get their own programs going and how to incorporate girls into their boys’ programs. I had coaches who wanted me to talk to their school board to show that girls’ wrestling was actually possible to do. It really just picked up steam very, very quickly.”

The 245 girls that wrestled in 2019 nearly doubled in 2020 to 474 as the OHSWCA took over the state tournament. Growth continued in 2021 as 539 girls wrestled — the ninth highest reported number in the nation for girls’ wrestling that year.

And with that growth came another opportunity for the Longhorns to make history—claiming the first ever girls’ wrestling dual victory in school history in 2021.

But that, of course, depends on who you ask.

“We had our first ever girls’ wrestling dual match with Mentor.

They had started their own team and we were able to make it happen,” Ressler said. “We like to say we picked up our first girls’ dual victory, but they say that, too. Well, I scored it like

It was pretty funny and just a real fun moment to even be able to have.”

While records and history making moments are great, there are many other things to be proud of. For Ressler, top of that list is that the growth of the sport is occurring throughout the state, not just in one area or in certain schools. The first OHSWCA tournament included wrestlers from 95 schools, with last year’s featuring 113 schools.

“Things have caught on quickly. It’s a great thing to see that this isn’t a regionalized thing where Northeast Ohio has 70 schools with representation and the rest of the state has 30. It’s really been spreading all over the state,” Ressler said. “It’s even more amazing when you consider that numbers across the state grew in 2021, even with COVID-19. There were more teams than ever, more girls wrestling than ever. Yes, the growth slowed compared to previous years, but it was still a substantial leap.”

In fact, the state tournament grew so much that four district tournaments were required this year to pare the number of state competitors down to a manageable number. The host school for the Northeast District tournament was none other than Lutheran West.

“We had 17 girls on the team and 11 had the opportunity to wrestle on their home mats in the first-ever Northeast District tournament,” Ressler said. “That’s pretty special. It was an honor to host the event and it was great to see that the sport had grown enough that it was necessary.”

The Longhorns placed second as a team with 116 points. They also sent eight wrestlers through to the state tournament, where Pirro pinned Taylor’s Meghan Werbrich in four minutes to claim the 137-pound state title.

It was her second OHSWCA title after claiming the 143-pound championship the year prior by defeating Zoe Hussar of Rossford by pinfill at the 2:40 mark. Also placing at the inaugural tournament was Lopez, who claimed third in the 150-pound bracket with a pinfall against Nya Miller of Ridgedale at the 1:29 mark.

In addition to her own success, Pirro loved seeing her teammates succeed.

“You always want to make it to the state tournament, but it’s so much better making the trip with others who are there to compete and not just cheer,” Pirro said. “I think this last year was cool. It was weird with COVID and all that, but having teammates qualify with me for the state tournament made it feel a bit more normal and I’m so glad they were there, too.”

For Pirro, it was a joy to see the sport begin to explode throughout not only the state, but also within the walls of Lutheran West.

“The connection I have with my teammates and the coaches, it’s amazing,” Pirro said. “I think that’s one of the coolest things.

They are my family. And it was cool that every year my family grew. I grew up with them at West and they’re always going to have a special place with me.”

“I love that this is another way that we can help our students here at Lutheran West have another path to college . . . more colleges are adding women's wrestling each year, which means more scholarships are available each year.”

While Pirro leaving the Longhorns behind to become a Warrior at Indiana Tech is a bittersweet moment for the program, Ressler takes pride in knowing the Longhorns now have yet another avenue to offer its students to higher education.

“From a sport standpoint, wrestling is the number two driver of first-generation college students in the United States,” Ressler said. “I love that this is another way that we can help our students here at Lutheran West have another path to college. Yes, you need to have the skill and put in the work, but without a team and the exposure, it’s exponentially harder to get that scholarship. And more colleges are adding women’s wrestling each year, which means more scholarships are available each year.”

Pirro also knows that she is leaving the Longhorns’ program in a great place—a place that she admits she didn’t see possible when first walking through the Lutheran West doors as a freshman.

“It’s great to see that the team is doing well,” Pirro said.

“I think it’s something where you kind of even the playing field.

When I was a freshman, I was wrestling boys because I had to.

It didn’t have anything to do with skill. There wasn’t really a choice. Now, girls can join the Lutheran West girls’ team with the expectation of wrestling girls. I think that’s a great thing and only helps the sport grow, because things are even now. I don’t know if I really saw that happening so quickly when I was a freshman, but I’m so happy that it has.”

The Future of Girlsʼ Wrestling Girls’ wrestling is at a crossroads, both at Lutheran West and at the state level.

Locally, the Longhorns are looking to take the next step as a program. That step comes naturally as its first group of freshmen have graduated and it now begins the cycle of replenishing while also offsetting a full graduating class.

State-wide, the next hurdle is achieving OHSAA sanctioning as an Emerging Sport—which basically means that the OHSAA begins to sponsor and aid in running the sport as it transitions to being under its banner.

Ressler is excited about the future of his program, but cautiously optimistic about the future of the sport in Ohio.

“We’re behind,” Ressler said. “As a state, Ohio is falling behind the rest of the nation when it comes to getting girls’ wrestling the recognition it deserves. When we started this three years ago, there were only 10 states that had sanctioned girls’ wrestling at the high school level. We

wanted to be in the top-25. Don’t be in the second half of the country on this one. Well, unfortunately, we are. But I think that also speaks to the national boom that girls’ wrestling is experiencing right now.”

As of the 2020-21 season, 32 states had already sanctioned girls’ wrestling. At the high school level, the National Federation of State High School Associations has reported a growing number of girls’ wrestling participants across the nation for 30 straight years.

Collegiately, the opportunities continue to grow as 94 colleges offer programs between the NCAA, NAIA and JUCO ranks. Three of those programs are in Ohio (Lourdes University, Tiffin University, and Hiram College).

So, what is holding up the OHSAA? After all, Ohio has the ninth largest girls’ wrestling platform in terms of participants, yet trails only New York (575 girls’ wrestlers) as the second-highest participation rate without sanctioning the sport.

Simply put, time.

“The OHSAA gave us [the OHSWCA] a checklist that was quite long,” Ressler said. “It’s nine pages long, and we needed to check every box to be eligible to become an Emerging Sport under OHSAA sanctioning. We check every single box except one. We need three years of financial records, but only have two so far.

“I want to have that same opportunity for the girls for years to come. I want them to learn the same life lessons and then be great citizens, great workers, great leaders, great moms, great Christians.”

“So, basically, we’re running this year as status quo.

The OHSWCA will run the state tournament. We’ll do the District tournaments again because we’re anticipating another 200-400 girl increase this year. We’ll gather the financials and if everything goes correctly, we’ll be sanctioned for the 2022-23 season.”

In other words, once the third-annual OHSWCA girls’ state tournament is complete, the ball will entirely be in the OHSAA’s court.

And Ressler hopes they do the right thing.

“Sanctioning is really just a key to the growth and development of girls’ wrestling,” Ressler said. “In our presentation to the OHSAA, we talked about Missouri. The year the state sanctioned the girls’ tournament, there were 169 participants.

That number jumped to 914 the next year and 1,423 the year after that.

“It’s because having the state’s governing body behind you opens doors. Schools that aren’t willing to put the money behind the girls will be open to it once the state is involved.

Administrators have help in forming and developing a plan to make a team possible. Getting sanctioned is a huge step and one that needs to happen.”

Regardless of what the state decides to do, Ressler is ready to keep things moving in the right direction where the movement began: Lutheran West.

“We’ve had girls on our team since 2005, back when Chelsea Pender was the first girl to wrestle for Lutheran West,” Ressler

said. “It might not have been every year, but there were more years than not since 2005 that a girl was wrestling on the boys’ team. Nicole Swanson ’12 was the first girl to win a match in Longhorn wrestling history. She was wrestling another girl and got the win. Then you have Allyssa come along. And then the first team, then double-digits. And we’re going to keep this going. I’d love for the team to eventually be large enough that it rivals the boys’ team in size.”

While the accolades and honors the team has received have been great, Ressler believes that the most important thing starting a girls’ team has achieved is within the girls themselves.

“We know what wrestling has done in our own lives,” Ressler said. “The brotherhood and sisterhood that is created through wrestling will help carry them for the rest of their lives.

The lessons that they learn and the discipline and desire for success, you can’t measure that.

“We’ve been giving that opportunity to the boys for 50 years here at Lutheran West. I want to have that same opportunity for the girls for years to come. I want them to learn the same life lessons and then be great citizens, great employees, great leaders, great moms, great Christians.” ■

Student and School Successes Despite a Global Pandemic Included in last year's CLHSA Annual Report was an article entitled "Academics in the 2019-2020 School Year: Uncharted Territory."

Admittedly—and possibly a bit naively—when writing that article, we believed that there would not be a similar article applicable to the 2020-2021 school year. Yet as we're all too aware, the COVID-19 crisis persisted . . . but so did the CLHSA and its schools.

When it comes to COVID-19, it's far too easy to focus on the negative —the lost time, lost events, lost relationships.

God gives us a gift, however. He gives us the ability to see the duality in every situation. With the bad always comes some good. With hardships always come silver linings. With tests of faith always come unexpected blessings.

In the 2020-2021 school year, our school communities were not immune to the hardships. Yet in the midst of the hardships, successes manifested. Through God's grace, our school communities thrived and grew. Teachers continued to educate, and students continued to learn. Student-athletes continued to compete. Our artists, musicians, vocalists, and thespians continued to create and perform. Our plans for the expansion of our school ministry continued to move forward.

Your unwavering support of our mission makes this all possible. Without the generosity of those listed in this report, the resources and initiatives invested in by Lutheran East and Lutheran West could not have carried our schools through a global pandemic.

We're beyond blessed and proud that despite one of the most monumental challenges in the history of our schools, we remained in a position to deliver the educational experience our students and families deserve.

Lutheran East Honors Academy Sends First Class of 4-Year Members into the World Lutheran East Honors Academy Co-Deans Shelby Drazen and Mary-Kate Begin feel like proud parents.

In May, the first class of seniors to have spent 4 years in the Honors Academy graduated from Lutheran East.

The eleven graduates wore graduation cords denoting their membership in the Honors Academy and were awarded with special Honors Academy diplomas. These students maintained high academic standards, including elevated GPA requirements and participation in Honors level courses. Many were also inducted into the National Honor Society, which recognizes top-performing high school students across the country.

Ms. Begin, Co-Dean, states, "It's so exciting to see them go out into the world and use all the assets and skills they've gained through the Honors Academy. They're in college, pursuing their career ambitions and dreams, and we couldn't be prouder."

Greetings from Lutheran High School East! The 2021-2022 school year is well underway and we are blessed to welcome more than 320 students to our halls each day. Partnering with our students and their families is an amazing group of faculty, staff, and administrators who are focused on providing the Christ-centered college preparatory high school education that propels our graduates into the future.

Thinking back to our graduation celebration last May, I remember being filled with optimism! Not only was I full of hope for our graduates who were primed and prepared to head off to college, I was also primed and prepared to move beyond the constant hum that COVID created throughout the world. Maybe there wasn’t much substance to that hope—or maybe the future was so bright for our graduates, that everything in that moment seemed to have a sunny outlook. In either case, our graduates have springboarded into the next part of their lives, and COVID continues to be a force impacting nearly every aspect of life, education included.

My experience of hopefulness on that Commencement day has led me to a greater understanding of the word. Christian hope, after all, is not hollow. In fact, the opposite is true. It is bursting at the seams with joyful confidence, and it’s that sort of hope that is a hallmark of our educational ministry at Lutheran East. When a college-prep educational experience is coupled with sharing the love and grace of Jesus, lives are transformed and a brighter future is realized.

It is a blessing to welcome students to Lutheran East, to engage them in faith and education, and to do this work in person. This is different from last year when, out of an abundance of caution and COVID necessity, many of our students learned via remote instruction. I’m incredibly proud of our students and our faculty that pressed on and forward throughout last school year. The educational growth that our students achieved is a testimony to their hard work and the determination of committed educators. Even so, a Lutheran East education is more than academic growth. Although it’s certainly that, it also includes the spiritual and social growth that will shape future generations. To achieve each of those goals, we’re committed to a foundation of in-person learning and health and safety for the 2021-2022 school year.

Educational, spiritual, and social growth have always required commitment and resiliency, because there have been and will always be obstacles that stand in the way. For some students, getting to school is an obstacle which they overcome by getting up earlier, hopping a ride on the RTA, riding a bike, or in 2021, an e-scooter! The obstacle of inconsistent internet access is countered with extended hours at school beyond the bell schedule or at a local library. The obstacle of the cost of education is resolved through the generosity of others that make financial scholarships possible. Some obstacles that our current Falcons face are probably familiar to you from your own days as a student. But new roadblocks and potholes have a way of showing up in innovative ways and in unexpected places. Sometimes it seems as if new obstacles arise just as we are finding solutions to the old ones! Ultimately, however, it’s not the obstacle but the resiliency to overcome the barrier that matters.

Last year, COVID and the far-reaching ripple effects of the pandemic were our constant obstacle. For example, the boysʼ basketball team had to take a two-week hiatus in the middle of the season due to COVID exposure. Lost practice time and canceled or rescheduled games became their obstacles. Yet resiliency and determination got them through the shutdown—all the way to our school’s third state championship!

A further-reaching challenge was having many of our students engaged in remote learning. The loss of in-person classroom time and hallway interactions with peers and faculty became their obstacles. Resiliency led to evening study sessions via Zoom, by which students and educators connected virtually to persist in educational advancement. Despite the challenges, the Lutheran East Class of 2021 had a 100% graduation rate. There are obstacles we anticipate and new ones just now taking shape on the horizon. But there’s a resilient and hopeful spirit forming in the lives of our students—hopeful in Christ and in their education to forge ahead towards a future that is bright.

This is what it means to be a Falcon. This is Lutheran East.

I’m proud of our school, our students, and our faculty and staff. Through obstacles and opportunities, Lutheran East is strong. Rooted in our tradition and history, we are hopeful about our future. I’ve been praying for that future and that God will continue to guide our steps. Would you join me in that prayer as well? Middle Schoolers to Start at Lutheran West in Fall 2022 Lutheran West Admissions has begun meeting with families who are interested in grades 6-8.

Last fall, a Lutheran West Middle School was conceptual—an idea and a vision that we believed could work.

This fall, it's far beyond conceptual. With the research and planning phase complete, a comprehensive marketing campaign centered around the middle school has launched. The Admissions team is guiding families of incoming 6th-8th graders through the admissions process in hopes that in the fall of 2022, they'll become the first middle schoolers to attend Lutheran West.

The concept behind a Lutheran West middle school is that students in grades 6-8 will benefit from Lutheran West's established resources, programs, and facilities. High school programs—including athletics, arts, and the Senney Honors Academy—will be scaled to the middle school level, providing a wide array of options for coursework and student extra-curricular activities.

Students in grades 7 and 8 will also have the opportunity to take selected courses for high school credit, which will in turn create more space in their high school schedules to take Honors, AP, and College Credit Plus courses, as well as more electives and specialized courses that match their interests and goals.

Our hope and prayer for the middle school is that it serves to elevate and expand Christian education in Northeast Ohio.

The 2020-2021 school year was an exciting, challenging, and rewarding adventure for Lutheran West students and faculty. The school theme “Don’t conform - be transformed!” was based upon the Romans 12:2 passage which reads, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” In a year when the world was both shut down and then slowly emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Lutheran West community intentionally and effectively refused to allow a pandemic to deter education.

The year started with the second highest enrollment in school history, with 500 students.

Approximately 20% of the student body began the school year online using our synchronous online learning environment platform (SOLE). SOLE was able to facilitate live, real-time learning for students who were unable to attend school in person due to the pandemic. Whether it was a lecture, classroom discussion, science lab, or even culinary arts lesson, students utilizing SOLE were able to see their classmates, respond to their teachers, and even participate in lab work from the safety of their homes. As data continues to emerge post-pandemic, parents, students and educators can clearly see the value of in-person learning. Still, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the SOLE platform allowed Lutheran West to provide an educationally rich, Christ-centered experience in a 21st century learning environment for all students last year.

In a year when many schools were incapable of providing extra-curricular activities for students, Lutheran West safely provided a full schedule of athletic contests for all sports teams, the drama department performed two musical productions, the bands and choirs performed four concerts, and clubs found a way to meet virtually. Countless parents shared encouraging messages and their appreciation for the commitment of our coaches and program directors. Their dedication to educational ministry and passion for providing these opportunities to students at a time when it was increasingly difficult to even host an event were warmly accepted and appreciated. A common cliche throughout the pandemic has been, “We’re all in this together!” However, at Lutheran West, those words were proven to be true day after day, game after game, as the year culminated in a joyful in-person celebration at the graduation ceremony in May. Praise God for his faithfulness and protection in all facets of the student experience at Lutheran West!

The unfortunate reality is that the pandemic has created detrimental cognitive effects for students across the United States due to loss of class time and instruction. The US Department of Education found that American students, on average, completed only 87% of their reading curriculum and only 67% of their mathematics curriculum during the 2020-2021 school year. These effects will negatively impact students and our society for generations to come. At Lutheran West however, students attended school every day either in person or live via SOLE, and because of their daily learning, student achievement rates were almost 10 percentage points higher than the state average in reading and almost 20 percentage points higher in mathematics. In May, 100% of the senior class graduated. These academic achievements would not have been accomplished without a determined faculty, devoted coaches, supportive families, and a school community that values its students above all else. “Don’t conform -be transformed!” was the rallying cry for Lutheran West. The unity around that mantra was able to sustain our community during the 2020-2021 school year and will continue to carry us through the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Year in Athletics:

Lutheran West Fall 2020: Lutheran West Football finished the Fall 2020 season 4-5, losing to Galion in the playoffs. The team finished the year beating Fairview 40-7. After 6 years as Head Coach, Coach Frank Petroff stepped down (he went 26-33 including 7-3 in 2019). Subsequently, Head Coach John Parrella was hired. Jake Parrella ʼ21 signed with Oregon State University. Volleyball finished 14-9, lost to Buckeye High School in playoffs Talia Felton ʼ21 signed with Cedarville University. Head Coach Jeff Schaef stepped down and current Head Coach Laura Thrasivoulou was hired. Boysʼ Soccer finished 13-6 and won the CVC Metro Title. Their season concluded with a loss to Bay Village in the district semi-final.

Greater Cleveland Honors included Braden Lamb ʼ22 (1st Team), Ben Gramz ʼ21 (2nd Team), Tyler DeSimpelare ʼ21 (2nd Team). Girlsʼ Soccer finished 2-8-1, having a fun a memorable season.

Cross Country: both the boys and girls finished as conference runner ups. Golf: The girlsʼ team went 12-3, were sectional runner-ups, and advanced to districts. Sam Webb ʼ21 signed with Ashland University. The boysʼ team finished 2nd in the CVC. Jakob Gross ʼ21 signed with Sienna Heights University and was an individual sectional runner-up, also advancing to districts.

Winter 2020-2021: Boysʼ Basketball finished 13-9, ending their season with a loss to Warrensville Heights in the sectional semifinal. Tyler DeSimpelare ʼ21 signed with Spring Arbor University and earned Honorable Mention All State. Coach Jordan Duke was hired as Head Coach of the boysʼ program. Girlsʼ Basketball finished their season 9-10. They beat Keystone in the sectional semi-final and lost to Northwest in the sectional final. Wrestling: Allyssa Pirro ʼ21 won her 3rd state title in a row in Womenʼs 24

Wrestling and signed with Indiana Tech. Donovan Palmer ʼ21 placed 3rd at OHSAA state tournament and signed with Baldwin Wallace. Lutheran West hosted the inaugural Ohio High School Wrestling Coaches Association Regional Championship for Women. Bowling: JT Maslanich ʼ23 qualified for his second straight state tournament.

Spring 2021: Baseball finished 15-7 with the season ending with a sectional final loss to Black River. Softball had 9 wins, which totals more than the past five seasons combined! Eva Luenger ʼ23 broke school record for triples, and the 2021 season marked the first season for Head Coach Amy Sullivan.

Track & Field: The track & field season resulted in several qualifications for regionals, including: Menʼs 4x200 (Manny Diaz ʼ22, Zach Kuhrt ʼ21, Brandon Southgate ʼ23, Alex Vangelos ʼ23); Womenʼs 4x100 (Evelyn Albers ʼ22, Emily Atkins ʼ22, Madison Groppe ʼ21, Hope Kiraly ʼ21; Evelyn Albers in Long Jump; Jack Jedick ʼ21 in Shot Put; Madison Groppe in the 200m.

The Year in Arts:

Lutheran West Lutheran West’s vocal music, instrumental music, fine arts, and drama programs were blessed with talented and dedicated student participants during the 2020-2021 school year.

In fine arts, students explored 12 unique courses like Ceramics, Drawing, Painting, Digital Photography, Crafts, and more, including a new course in Graphic Design. Art student Lexi Miles earned 2nd place in the Spring 2021 Lakewood Rotary Club / Beck Center for the Arts High School Art Show.

The 2020-2021 school year marked a first—Lutheran West Drama staged not one, but two, full-scale musical productions.

In the fall of 2020, students took to the Jochum Performing Arts Center stage in their production of Disney’s Newsies. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they had been unable to perform the show in the spring of 2020. The cast of Newsies included 18 boys—the most male students ever in a single Lutheran West drama production. Several 2020 graduates were able to come back to participate in the fall productions in the fall, which were recorded and streamed virtually. After Newsies wrapped, focus shifted to the spring 2021 musical, The Addams Family. The show was performed with a limited live audience and included a large senior class, both in stage talent and backstage personnel.

Both shows were fantastic successes and showcased Lutheran West’s many talented actors, singers, musicians, lighting & sound technicians, costume designers, set designers, and directors.

Drama students once again participated actively in the Playhouse Square Dazzle Awards and many virtual workshops offered through this program. Class of 2021 member Anthony Ghali was one of 7 actors nominated from 30 high schools in Northeast Ohio for the 2021 Dazzle Awards Lead Actor category for his performance in The Addams Family.

Student vocalists and instrumentalists held seasonal concerts throughout the year. Band students were treated to a visit from special guest Steve Kortyka, a local native and accomplished multi-instrument performer, composer, and music educator. The concert band performed at St. Paul Westlake — the first “field trip” taken by Lutheran West students since the onset of COVID-19.

The Year in Athletics:

Lutheran East

On March 21, Lutheran East Boysʼ Basketball became the 2021 Division III State Champions with a win over Worthington Christian School (Columbus). The program now boasts two state championships in the past five years, four consecutive regional championships, and six consecutive district championships. Finishing the season with an overall record of 16-3, the boysʼ basketball program graduated six seniors who all received college basketball scholarships. Continue to follow Jay Billingsley (Georgetown University), Collin Albert (Notre Dame College), Sirr Hughes (Alderson Broaddus University), Jalen Knott (Alderson Broaddus University), Jared Lary (Lincoln Memorial University), and BJ Busbee (University of Mount Union) in their college careers. Head Coach Sam Liggins LEʼ05 was named Coach of the Year by the Greater Cleveland Basketball Coaches Association.

The girlsʼ basketball program will be entering its first season under the coaching direction of Head Coach Melvin Burke, who was hired in April 2021. In August 2021, the girlsʼ basketball team was invited to see WNBA star Jantel Lavender play in a game for the Indiana Fever. Lavender, a Cleveland native, graduated and played for The Ohio State University and is a former player of Lutheran East coach Melvin Burke. The Lady Falcons hit the road at 6:00 a.m. to head to Indiana for a 1:00 p.m. game start. The girls watched the game in excitement and anticipation of their upcoming 2021-2022 season. While the Fever did not pull off a win, Jantel and teammates were more than happy to take pictures with our Lady Falcons following the game. Jantel then spoke to the girls about the opportunities that playing basketball can bring. She also followed all of the Lutheran East players back on social media and promised to try to attend a practice the next time she was home in Cleveland.

The five-hour road trip home was filled with lots of laughs and karaoke, with the girls cheerful and grateful for the experience.

Lutheran East Football welcomed new Head Coach Desean Washington, also hired in April 2021. In the Fall 2020 season, the football program earned its first playoff game win in school history, winning 58-35 against Berkshire!

The Falcon Track & Field season was dominated by Amere Talley ʼ22, who became the State Champion in the 400m.

Amere, who is a Lutheran East Honors Academy student with a 4.3 GPA, also placed 8th in the 200m at the state meet and broke the Lutheran East school record for the 400 with a time of 48.41.

Falcon Cheer had a fun and memorable year, cheering during the fall at football games and the winter at basketball games.

During the Fall 2020 season, the volleyball program continued to grow and improve and is thus far enjoying a fun and successful 2021 season.

The CLHSA has introduced a Corporate Partnership program by which organizations can support CLHSA events and initiatives throughout the year.

Instead of being contacted to support each individual CLHSA event during a given year, Corporate Partners complete a partnership agreement in January and are automatically considered sponsors for all 3 major events (the Golf Classic in June, the Sagehorn Golf Outing in August, OMNIA in October) plus inclusion in promotion and advertising by the CLHSA and sponsorship of select school athletics and/or arts programs.

Corporate partners may select from one of three levels of giving with event sponsorships and perks consummate with the selected level.

An Update on the

Distinguished Alumni Program The Cleveland Lutheran High School Association takes great pride in its alumni. Throughout the course of the 70+ year history of our schools, alumni have gone on to make impactful differences in their communities and the world.

The Distinguished Alumni program recognizes alumni who have had significant success and/or notable impact in their professions and in their communities.

Since 2001, Lutheran High School East has maintained an Alumni Hall of Fame. From this point forward, Lutheran East’s Alumni Hall of Fame inductees will now be members of the school’s Distinguished Alumni program. From 2001 until 2011, a total of 19 alumni were inducted. In 2021, we recognize 2 new Distinguished Alumni from Lutheran East.

At Lutheran West, the Distinguished Alumni program is the first recognition of its type. This year, 11 alumni will be inducted. In future years, 4-6 alumni will be inducted per year.

Estate Planning:

Peace of Mind in an Uncertain World 2020 is a year that many will never forget.

The year taught us lessons, some welcome and some unanticipated. Most of all, though, we learned that the unexpected can happen to anyone. Being prepared for the things we can control is extremely important, especially during times when we do not know what the future may hold. One thing each of us can control is our estate plan. An estate plan, also known as a will or trust, is a collection of legal documents that set forth how you want your assets to be distributed when the Lord calls you home. These crucial documents will also map out how you want people you have appointed to handle health and financial decisions if you become unable to do so during your lifetime.

If you are like most, you have been dreading this task and putting it off until later in life. The majority of us have strong feelings about who should inherit our money, real estate, personal possessions, and other assets—and who shouldn’t? But sadly, many people pass on without ever putting their wishes in writing.

It is never too early to start planning or creating an estate plan. Putting an estate plan in place is among the most important things you can do

for your loved ones, leaving them with clear instructions as to your final wishes.

It is also crucial to keep your estate plan up to date. The estate plan that was appropriate for your family and financial situation 10 or even 5 years ago may no longer fit your current circumstances.
