CLHSA-Wide Gala & Auction Coming in Fall 2021

We excitedly invite you to save the date for the evening of October 16, 2021! The first annual CLHSA-wide gala and auction, an event named Omnia, will be held at the Cleveland Museum of Art. This beautiful space in Cleveland’s University Circle will be the site of a silent auction, three-course dinner, speakers, and entertainment.

The word ‘Omnia’ is Latin and translates to ‘all’ or ‘entirety.’ Our goal for this exciting event is to celebrate and gather together all those who impact our two schools.

In years past, Lutheran East and Lutheran West have held separate benefit auctions and fundraisers. While each school will continue to host its own fundraisers for athletics, arts, special projects, and more, the annual Omnia event will be a CLHSA-hosted fundraiser to support both of our high schools.

A committee is being established to plan the evening and to acquire unique and desirable auction items. If you are interested in serving on this committe, please contact Ashley Koza, CLHSA Director of Development, at akoza@clhsa.org or 440-356-7155, ext. 3.

A MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT & CEO

“Lord, You are my portion and my cup of blessing. You hold my future.” Psalm 16:5 When Governor DeWine ordered all schools to close and move to online education in March, a huge component of our schools vanished overnight. Students who had worked their whole high school careers to qualify for the state wrestling tournament saw their chance to stand on the podium taken away. A fourth consecutive State Final Four appearance for Lutheran East men's basketball was suddenly off the table. The largest musical production Lutheran West has attempted to stage in the Jochum Performing Arts Center was cancelled. Prom, a rite of passage for generations of high school students, could not be held. Schools have always been more than just the classroom, and we abruptly lost all of those communal gathering opportunities that make students' high school experiences complete. Our parents and students, along with the faculties of our schools, were thrust into a period of mourning what could have been.

As schools that are built on the truth of Scripture, we know that mourning will ultimately turn to joy in the hands of our Lord. This foundational truth allowed us to not just mourn, but to exhibit resilience that has changed our schools for the better. When you know the One who holds the future, it changes everything about how you conduct the present. We already know how the story ends-with Christ’s victory over death being given to us! That truth is the bedrock of all that we do at the Cleveland Lutheran High School Association.

The story of the CLHSA since March has been one of resilience. We improved our virtual class offerings each month in the spring and finished our entire curricula for the year-at a time when many schools stopped trying to educate. We found a way to hold Commencement ceremonies and celebrate our 2020 graduates. Faithful donors gave to support families who lost their jobs so that students could continue in our schools. We developed a Synchronous Online Learning Environment (SOLE) that is currently allowing for students to choose between live, in-person classes or live synchronous classes at home. Enrollment at our schools actually grew during the pandemic and currently sits at 844 students between Lutheran East and Lutheran West. That is the 2nd highest enrollment in CLHSA history! COVID-19 has been tough on every family and every organization, but the resiliency of our community has us poised for incredible growth at both schools as we begin to emerge from this pandemic.

As you read through this 2020 Annual Report, you will see a myriad of ways in which God has blessed us throughout the last year. Our students are seeing their lives changed through the combination of incredible teachers, a rigorous curriculum, sterling extracurricular options, and the power of the Gospel. The alumni of both Lutheran East and Lutheran West continue to have outsize impacts in their communities and in our churches. It is truly remarkable to see all that God has done and continues to do through our schools in the lives of the students whom we serve.

Your financial support is critical to building the resiliency of our school ministry. I hope you will see in the pages of this report that the support you have given has been used wisely, with an eye toward our current situation and the opportunities which will come in future years. In these times of uncertainty, may you rest secure in the God who has delivered you in the past and has promised you ultimate deliverance! THE

DOWNTOWN

SCHOOL

The first graduating class of Lutheran High School, the original Pioneers, dedicated the school's inaugural yearbook (The Pioneer) in 1952 as follows: In appreciation we dedicate

this book to you ― the men and women who made Lutheran High a reality, realizing that you wish to leave a rich heritage of Lutheranism in your city; to you whose faith in this glorious undertaking has not been shaken even in the face of adverse circumstances; to you who lived in your faith, who made a dream come true for the youth of Cleveland now, and in the distant future, God willing, through your diligent prayer, constant encouragement, and generous gifts of time and financial support. To you ― our Christian friends, who sacrificed to build Lutheran High, we, the students of the school, gratefully dedicate this book.

Over 74 years ago, in 1946, representatives from Lutheran churches in the Greater Cleveland area resolved to establish a Lutheran High School in the city. By the following January, the Cleveland Lutheran High School Association was formed and the plans were underway. On September 7, 1948, forty-eight students embarked on their first year as original Pioneers.

To start the school year, classes were held in the Towne Club previously owned by the Cleveland Lutheran Veterans Club.

Once completed, Cleveland Lutheran High School resided at 2648 Prospect Avenue. If you are fortunate enough to remember the city in 1948, the school was located right next to Central Cadillac. It was composed of three mansions that were renovated to accommodate everything a high school would need and connected by hallways.

If you are one of those who can recall the downtown school's location, you are aware that this landmark location has since become the Innerbelt Freeway. In 1955-1956, the School Board was notified that the State of Ohio was to acquire the present site of Lutheran High School and use its right of eminent domain on the Prospect Avenue property.

The years at Lutheran High showed great success for Christian education in Cleveland. Each year, the school’s student body grew measurably―in only the second year, enrollment had increased to 150 students. But growth and blessings bring changes―the student body had multiplied 11 times in the ten years; it was time to expand.

Following the announcement of the Innerbelt Freeway’s construction, and due to the growing student body, a relocation study was performed and the Board passed the following resolution unanimously: “It is the opinion of the

Board that two Lutheran High Schools, one on the east side and another on the west side of Cleveland, are deemed necessary to carry on effectively the work in which we are engaged at present.”

Although this resolution marked the end of what we today call the ‘Downtown School,’ the foundation set forth by the original Lutheran High School enabled the reality of the two sister Lutheran schools which we know today: Lutheran High School East and Lutheran High School West.

Today, the Cleveland Lutheran High School Association is honored to call the graduates from 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, and 1958 its founding alumni. The opening dedication in this article honored the school's impactful founders, those who sacrificed their time and resources because they believed so strongly in the essential value of Christian high school education. Because of our Pioneer alumni, this sentiment has held true throughout the decades.

The 1952 yearbook, with its heartfelt dedication, still sits proudly on a shelf in the CLHSA offices. Now, 68 years later, we'd like to humbly offer a ‘thank you’ in the style of the original yearbook’s dedication to our Downtown School alumni: To you ― the leadership that built this dream into a reality, the students who put their faith and hearts into the school, and the faculty who set the precedent for an outstanding Christ-centered education, we, the CLHSA, gratefully dedicate this Annual Report.

Alongside the impactful Christ-centered classroom learning experienced by students at Lutheran High, clubs and extra-curriculars were a significant part of student life. Administration believed that offering a variety of clubs and activities allowed students to develop or explore interests and to build an active community. Examples of clubs during the downtown school years include:

During the Lutheran High School years, Dr. Sagehorn and his faculty created a strong and robust curriculum. Students were able to choose the curricula they wished to pursue (examples: college preparatory, commercial, general). Each offering included classes that were titled constant or variable, what we today might refer to as Gen. Ed. and elective classes. Constant courses closely mirrored the courses offered in our schools today: English, social studies/history, mathematics, religion. Variable courses taken were dependent upon the curricula each student chose, and included course offerings such as trigonometry, journalism, home economics, typing, salesmanship, and American problems. Although the classroom tools, technology, and aspects of our courses have changed considerably throughout the decades, a foundational piece of Lutheran High has remained with our schools to this day-student access to a high-quality, Christ-centered education.

DR. SAGEHORN

In 1948, Dr. Erwin F. Sagehorn accepted a challenging call to Cleveland to establish a new Lutheran High School. He would serve as Principal from 1948-1957.

During the founding days of Lutheran High School, Dr. Sagehorn worked tirelessly alongside his devoted faculty to write policies and develop various curricula that are still foundational to our Christcentered mission today. Under his direction, Lutheran High was given a Class I certificate by the State of Ohio in 1950. Accreditation was given by The North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools before its first graduating class.

In February of 1957, in consideration of the two high schools soon to replace the single downtown school, the Board of Directors resolved that Dr. Sagehorn be named executive head of the schools with the title of Superintendent.

In the summer of 1975, an era came to an end as Dr. E.F. Sagehorn retired as Superintendent of the Cleveland Lutheran High School Association. During his 28 years of service to the Lord and the schools, a dream became a reality on Prospect Avenue, followed by a further extension of faith-based education with the opening of the two new schools. Thousands of students and hundreds of teachers will forever be affected by the impact of his ministry and his demanding quest for educational quality. Dr. E.F. Sagehorn, Superintendent Emeritus, has left a lasting legacy on our Lutheran High Schools.

Academics in the 2019-2020 School Year: Uncharted Territory From the start of school in August 2019 through February 2020, student learning was, for the most part, ‘business as usual.’ Students applied for and enrolled in the schools' Honors Academies, college visits took place, and students engaged in hands-on, collaborative learning in all subject areas.

In February 2020, we faced a situation that was unprecedented in the 70+ year history of the CLHSA: a global pandemic was threatening to temporarily shut down our schools.

On March 12, Governor Mike DeWine issued a mandate requiring all Ohio schools to close for in-person school attendance and instead offer remote instruction. Ohio residents were ordered to remain at home as much as possible. At the time, it was assumed that this would be short-lived―that in-person instruction in 2020 would return after a brief hiatus. However, on April 20, it was announced that all Ohio students would remain in remote learning for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.

Families who are not comfortable sending their child(ren) to school in person or who have an exposure to COVID-19 in their household can opt for SOLE instruction, either at length or for a short duration of time.

In administrative meetings and discussions during those initial weeks, our principals and other administrators felt the gamut of emotions: stress, uncertainty, sadness, worry. Yet one feeling rose above the rest: confidence. They became overwhelmingly confident in teachers, our staff, our students, our families, and our donors. Confident that, just as we have in the past, the CLHSA community would rise to this challenge. Confident that regardless of how uncertain our world suddenly seemed, we would see God's hand at work even in crisis.

In March, faculty members at both schools began holding classes in a virtual setting. Students met in a live video conferencing setting to receive lessons, ask questions, and interact with their teachers and classmates. Our schools continued Chapel services remotely, offered virtual submission of prayer requests, and continued to facilitate the Christian community on which we all rely in good times as well as in challenging ones.

In May, the CLHSA graduated 178 seniors: 73 from Lutheran East and 105 from Lutheran West. Seniors were invited to school at designated times in groups of no more than ten to walk the stage and receive their diplomas in person from their principals. This video footage was then edited into a contiguous ceremony video, made available as an online streaming video on the evening of May 29 for families to watch and celebrate together from the safety of their homes.

When asked to reflect on the spring remote learning period, CLHSA Superintendent Chris Steinmann ’00 stated, "I have always been proud of our school personnel, but the change we all faced together truly shined the spotlight on the fact that we are all at Lutheran East or Lutheran West for the same reason: to deliver the very best faithbased education possible for young people. From our administrators to our faculty to our parents to our custodial staff, every single person

Generous support from donors and friends of the CLHSA makes possible adaptations like the technological and facility-based improvements made during the summer. Without the resources to quickly invest in the necessary equipment and resources, implementation of safe in-person learning and the successful roll-out of SOLE would not have been possible.

Whether in the spring 2019 remote learning period or in this year's unique academic environment, students may experience challenges, hurdles, growing pains. But what they'll take from their Lutheran East or Lutheran West education remains the same: they'll be prepared for the world beyond high school. They'll be poised to be Christian leaders in a world that is facing turmoil. They'll have a strong community on which to rely in good times and in challenging ones.

Our community has made that possible. And for that, we are so very grateful.

CLHSA Director of Communications & Marketing Jessica Miller recently interviewed Taylor Eppinger ’20 and Tyra Eppinger ’20.

Dedicated students, athletes, and valued members of their school community, these twin sisters embodied the spirit of Lutheran East and what it means to be a Falcon.

Tyra: My favorite subject is math. For one, I loved every math

JM: How does it feel to be graduates?

Taylor: Lutheran East has helped me to understand that there

Taylor: It feels very good and scary

at the same time. I'm happy that all of my hard work in school has paid off and that I've graduated with high accomplishments. It's also scary being a graduate because this means that I'm ending and starting a new chapter of my life.

Tyra: It feels good to be a graduate from Lutheran East. I’m going to miss the LE experience, but LE will always be a part of me. I feel prepared for what life may bring in the future. I know I’ll make mistakes, but I know that everything will work out for the best.

JM: What were you involved in at LE?

Taylor: Outside of the classroom at Lutheran East, I played varsity

basketball, ran track, and played varsity volleyball my senior year.

I was a part of the Homecoming committee, Student Council, the National Honors Society, and I was a student ambassador.

Tyra: I played varsity basketball, volleyball, and track. I was also a student ambassador.

JM: What was your favorite thing about Lutheran East?

Taylor: My favorite thing about Lutheran East was the atmosphere.

I really loved being there because it felt like home and I loved the Christian values that were all around the building.

Tyra: I love the family atmosphere at Lutheran East. I know other schools have school pride, but this school was small enough to feel connected to almost everyone. The school has come a long way from how it used to be. To see how Lutheran East has grown - and being a part of that - made me proud to be a student there.

JM: Did you have a favorite teacher?

Taylor: I did not have a favorite teacher because I really appreciate

the entire Lutheran East staff. Each staff member played a different role in my life, but overall, they all taught me valuable things that I'm going to need in the future.

Tyra: No, I equally loved the staff. I have said that since my freshman year. Every teacher is so different in their own ways, but they all love and care for the students so much. The staff is funny, nice, and so caring that it feels like family.

JM: What about a favorite class or subject area?

Taylor: My favorite subject was English because I like to write in

my free time. Because Lutheran East gave me the opportunity to earn College Credit Plus credits, I only had English class for two 10 years, but I really enjoyed the class while I had it.

teacher at Lutheran East. They were all so helpful and made math less of a challenge for me. I also have always been very good with numbers and problem solving.

JM: How do you feel like your experience at Lutheran East has prepared you for college and/or adulthood?

are going to be times when I can have fun, but also times when I need to be responsible, professional, organized, and timely. All of those things that I've learned at Lutheran East are going to be very important in my adulthood, but especially in college.

Tyra: I feel that Lutheran East has prepared me to live in the world with a Christian mindset. Academically, the school prepared me to be able to handle big loads of college homework. Overall, the ability to receive my education in a Christian environment was a blessing for me. I don’t feel that I would be the person I am without Lutheran East.

JM: Looking back on your time at Lutheran East, what was the most rewarding aspect of your high school years?

Taylor: The most rewarding aspect of my high school years was that I was able to enjoy high school in a Christian setting. A lot of people aren't able to pay for private school. I was blessed to be able to attend private schools all of my life and I am very grateful for that.

Tyra: The most rewarding aspect of my high school years was not only my achievements with sports, but my academic achievements as well. Making it into the National Honors Society and maintaining good grades was something that made me very proud.

JM: What are your plans for college and career?

Taylor: I am currently attending Eastern Michigan University where I plan to major in Business Management. I’m also considering a major in International Business and minor in Accounting, or a major in Secondary Education.

Tyra: I’m currently in college majoring in mechanical engineering technology. I plan to be a mechanical engineering and eventually start a non-profit engineering program for young, black, future engineers.

JM: What else do you hope to do in your life?

Taylor: Besides my college and career future, I hope to travel and make a lot of good memories. I especially hope to continue to strengthen my relationship with God and to keep Him first.

Tyra: I hope to eventually dedicate my life to giving back. After going to the Dominican Republic with LE to help the people in the village, it made me want to help people more. I know that helping others is what God wants me to do. I will make sure that my career makes that possible for me.

P R I N C I PA L’ S M E S S A G E

There are nearly 350 Falcons enrolled at Lutheran East this year! If you came and walked our halls, however, you would only see about half of our student body attending in-person. The rest of our students are learning remotely through our Synchronous Online Learning Environment, affectionately known as SOLE. The reality is that in our current circumstances, school is different.

In fact, most everything looks and feels different since the “normal” patterns of life have been disrupted by COVID-19. Those disruptions have naturally left a lot of people with a feeling of uncertainty. Having experienced that feeling myself, and then finding encouragement in the One Who Is Certain, I want to share a few updates with you about Lutheran East based upon the three hallmarks of our school reopening plan: Health & Safety, Daily Education, and Flexibility.

The health and safety of our students is foundational to our ministry at Lutheran East. There are new layers as to what that means for us this year, including mandatory face masks, plexiglass shields, and a strict sanitizing schedule, but the idea itself is not new. Families have been choosing Lutheran East throughout our history because of our focus on health and safety, and our commitment not only to the physical well-being of our students, but their spiritual health as well.

The author of Hebrews admonishes his readers with these timely words, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another— and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” As a school community, we are finding unique ways to gather together in the name of Christ through theology classes, reading the Word through the Bible App, and worshipping while socially distanced in the gymnasium. Things are different, but God, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever, is with us just the same!

Academic growth comes from a consistent daily effort. Interruptions to education can have a profound negative impact— especially when those interruptions are prolonged or frequent. I’m glad to report that last March we were able to begin teaching in a virtual classroom setting just a few days after schools in Ohio were shut down for in-person instruction. This nimble effort is a testament to the dedication of our faculty and the support of families who know the value of a quality education. Daily instruction from our teachers and daily learning by our students, whether in-person or via SOLE, is one of the keys to the long term success that we’re striving for at Lutheran East.

Long-term success is punctuated with various milestone events, and my heart goes out to Lutheran East’s Class of 2020 who missed out on prom and a traditional graduation ceremony. They had plans and were looking forward to seeing those plans become reality. When prom was cancelled and a socially distanced virtual graduation took the place of our traditional ceremony, I’m sure that there was real disappointment. We like our plans and traditions! However, when faced with disappointment, we can set our sights on something else—something greater. When plans change, we can adjust so that we don’t lose sight of the prize for which we’re running this race. Just as my heart goes out to the Class of 2020, I’m proud of the fact that they are equipped to continue on with their eyes set on the future.

Flexibility is a necessity during these changing times. Plans have changed and will continue to change. One of the ironic things about flexibility, however, is that it requires a foundation. Without deep roots, we’ll be pulled in every direction just as the wind blows and the times change. At Lutheran East, we’re building our house upon the Rock of Jesus Christ so that we can be flexible to meet the changes necessitated by COVID-19 and firm in our foundation on Christ.

S T U D E N T F E AT U R E CLHSA Director of Communications & Marketing Jessica Miller recently interviewed one of Lutheran West's newest graduates, Emma Poole ’20. Highlyinvolved and a stellar student in high school, Emma is continuing her education and pursuit of her passions at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia.

JM: How does it feel to be a graduate?

EP: It is hard to believe that my

years of high school are over! Leaving Lutheran West was difficult. It is such a special school, and knowing that graduation meant not seeing my friends, teachers, and coaches daily was very sad. However, it is so rewarding to look at how much I have grown in the past four years and the successes and lessons that have come from my time at Lutheran West.

JM: What were you involved in at LW?

EP: Lutheran West’s outstanding athletics and extracurriculars

were a highlight of my high school experience. I participated in The Senney Honors Academy, Student Council, National Honor Society, Lutheran West Ambassadors, Book Club, EPIC Service/Youth Interact Club, Bible Study, and Academic Challenge. I was also able to play golf and soccer, run track, and be a cheerleader. In addition to school activities, Lutheran West connected me to many wonderful opportunities in our community. I held an internship at the Rocky River Chamber of Commerce, and attended seminars with and volunteered for the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Foundation.

Faith is also a large part of my life. I was very involved with worship, youth ministry, and service at my church, and I did a week-long residency with the Duke Youth Academy for Christian Formation with a year of mentorship, practice, and online community.

JM: What was your favorite thing about West?

EP: I love that Lutheran West has an abundance of opportunities―

academic, athletic, and extracurricular―but is still a closelyknit, faithful community where people genuinely care for one another. The school has one-of-a-kind programs, like the Senney Honors Academy, where I was able to interact with community leaders in a variety of disciplines, participate in internationally recognized leadership programs, maximize my college search process to find the perfect fit, and so much more. Lutheran West students have an amazing breadth of resources like that at their fingertips and still know every face they pass in the hallway. The teachers are always a friendly and helpful presence, and the love of Christ drives every action. It is a truly unique and incredible environment.

JM: Did you have a favorite teacher?

EP: It is so difficult to pinpoint a favorite: every faculty member I

interacted with was wonderful. However, I am particularly grateful to Mr. Jim Fenske because he challenged me to apply and connect difficult literary works and writing assignments with my faith and moral regard. His classes greatly improved my writing ability, critical thinking skills, and knowledge and regard for the Christian faith.

JM: What about a favorite class or subject area?

EP: I enjoyed the humanities, primarily history, AP English,

language, and religion. I am an avid reader and writer and am particularly fascinated by the connections between religious and academic movements and their effect on history.

JM: How do you feel that your experience at Lutheran West has prepared you for college and/or adulthood?

EP: My education and interactions with the Lutheran West

community have prepared me to understand the world we live in and how to face any challenge that presents itself. Lutheran West has given me a strong educational and faith foundation that continues to support me in the classroom and in my new community. My Lutheran West education helped me to know that I go with God, equipped through Him for what lies ahead and ready to be part of His work in making all things new.

JM: Looking back on your time at LW, what was the most rewarding aspect of your high school years?

EP: The most rewarding aspect of high school was definitely the people I now have in my life because of my time at Lutheran West.

It is the relationships with friends, teachers, coaches, and classmates that have taught me how to love God and others more and tackle every challenge in a positive way. Through The Senney Honors Academy, I learned to set and achieve academic and professional goals.

Through the athletic department, I learned how to challenge myself, live a healthy lifestyle, and be part of a supportive team. Through extracurriculars, I expanded my horizons and learned how to balance my schedule. Lutheran West makes all of these experiences not only possible but genuinely enjoyable because in every step of your journey you are supported by a community of believers who will enrich your life during and far beyond your high school years.

JM: What are your plans for college and career?

EP: I am a first-year at Washington and Lee University, and a Johnson Scholar, studying Religion; Law, Justice, and Society; Classics; History; and Spanish. During my college years, I plan to participate in the local faith community, service programs, campus extracurricular opportunities, internships, and study abroad programs. I hope to someday attend law school. I would like to work for a faith-based organization or a non-profit that allows me to use my intellectual and personal skills to help those in need.

JM: What else do you hope to do in your life?

EP: I plan to continue my walk with God and find ways to serve others with the gifts he has given me. I am a library enthusiast, an aspiring writer, and I love being outdoors, whether that means backpacking, biking, or enjoying the water. I plan to do mission work and hope to travel the world and broaden my horizons. I plan to become fluent in Spanish (and hopefully another language as well), meet new people, and experience life in its fullest. Most importantly, I plan to continue to honor God and love others in my work and relationships. I want to maintain close connections with my friends and family, and eventually be a wife and mother. Last but not least, I am looking forward to returning to Lutheran West as an alumna and helping to support the mission of the CLHSA in as many ways as I can. Go Longhorns!

Lutheran High School West focused the 2019-2020 school year around the theme, “We Are a New Creation” from 2 Corinthians 5:17. God created many new things at Lutheran West in the 2019-2020 school year, and we are thankful for the benefits our students have received.

The first “New Creation” of the school year came from the “I Believe in West” special projects campaign. These projects included a renovation and rededication of the Wittrock Gymnasium at the start of the women’s basketball season. The scope of the project also included renovations to the Lutheran West Library, Main Office, Student Services Office, Admissions Office and Faculty Lounge. A target goal of raising $150,000 was achieved through donations from our community and sponsorships on our new digital scoreboards.

The next “New Creation” was the new life one of our students received through baptism this past school year. A junior student, involved in both athletics and the arts, was baptized at St. Paul Westlake in February. He had been discipled by the teachers and directors in the Drama Department, along with some seniors (now graduates) from last school year.

Over 40 students and teachers attended the baptism to support this student as we welcomed him into the Lord’s family.

The last “New Creation” was an unexpected one, and that was Lutheran West’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Thursday, March 12, 2020, the Governor closed schools in Ohio. Lutheran West (and East) decided to pivot to remote learning with synchronous instruction immediately. Teachers successfully transitioned coursework to remote learning in just two school days at both campuses.

Many school districts around the country, and even around the world, struggled heavily during the fourth quarter of last school year. Those challenges to education were real, and many of these challenges still exist today. Some studies suggested that 60% of students in the United States learned nothing during the final nine weeks of the 2019-2020 school year. Still, the teachers at Lutheran West overcame these challenges, prepared their lessons on a nightly basis, and allowed our students to continue receiving an educationally rich, Christ-centered experience in a remote setting.

Finally, I’d like to share a note from a parent received during the remote learning period, which I feel sums up the school year. She wrote: “I want to say a huge thank you to all of the Lutheran West teachers and staff … I am sure there were hiccups for some students, but all of [my student’s] classes seemed to go smoothly. He was able to connect with teachers and classmates and received well-prepared lessons. It is a relief to me that [my student's] learning is not being drastically interrupted and is a strong testament to the school’s commitment to its academics under extraordinary circumstances.”

IN THE TIME OF COVID-19

In the history of our schools, never has there been a time when our school communities were restricted from coming together during the week to sing, praise, and celebrate our Christian faith.

When we look at Chapel photos and videos from the fall and early winter of the 2019-2020 school year, it's evident that our blissful ignorance of COVID-19 in some ways caused us to take for granted the time spent together in worship.

When the school shutdown occurred in March, the top priority for school personnel was the speedy and successful transition of our academic classes to a remote learning platform. Yet just as high on the priority list was Chapel. Faith education and coming together in worship is the core of our school communities: how could we allow it to fall by the wayside at a time when students, families, and faculty and staff needed it more than ever?

During the spring of 2020, every member of our school communities was able to tune in live to Chapel from the safety and comfort of their own homes. When it was once again allowed that groups of 10 or fewer individuals gather together, Chapel leaders from each school pre-recorded or live-streamed a Chapel service each week.

As of August 2020, students are back in our school buildings. Chapel does still look and feel different― everyone is wearing masks, the student body is split into two halves which either attend the live Chapel service or view a live broadcast of it from another location in the school, and we are unable to welcome outside guests to join us. Students who are utilizing SOLE (Synchronous Online Learning Environment) to learn from home are tuning in remotely. What is important, however, and now something we certainly don't take for granted, is that we’re once again able to join our voices and hearts together in love for Jesus.

We are thrilled that this fall, students are back in our school buildings with us. They are learning, growing, and worshiping together. During the spring and into the summer, the halls of our schools were unusually quiet: no youthful energy, no playful chatter, no athletic practices-and perhaps most noticeable of all, no music.

One lesson we have all been reminded of in 2020 is that some of life’s simplest pleasures, such as music, are the most rewarding. Our high schools believe firmly that music is one of God’s greatest gifts to humanity, and an integral part of our ability to express our love for Him, for one another, and for our world.

In a world where, to our great disappointment, many schools are cutting back on arts programming due to financial and social constraints, we are blessed to be able to continue to provide an exceptional arts experience to Lutheran East and Lutheran West students.

The Year in Arts:

Lutheran East

From August through early March of the 2019-2020 school year, Lutheran East students created, sang, and acted.

Fine arts classes explored digital art, photography, drawing, and painting. Taylor Eppinger ’20 and Jaylin Walden ’20 earned recognition as regional winners in the 2020 Ohio Governor's Youth Art Exhibition.

Young actors took the stage in the fall play, a production entitled ‘Baggage.’ The play, written by Sam Bobrick, told the story of two strangers who meet by accidentally switching luggage at the airport.

A highlight of the year was the Lutheran East Gospel Choir’s fall trip to New York City. The Schola Cantorum, which is the Gospel Choir's select group of singers, was honored to be invited to perform at NYC’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral as part of the church’s Guest Choir Series. Talented student vocalists, along with Director of Choral Activities Mr. Jonathon Turner and chaperones, traveled to New York in mid-October.

In addition to the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sing at the world-famous cathedral, the group also toured renowned arts institution The Julliard School and visited The Statue of Liberty.

In February 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic began preventing travel, the Gospel Choir and Lutheran East Honors Academy were able to make a trip to Atlanta, Georgia. Along with a visit to the Civil Rights Museum, the group had the opportunity to tour Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Clark-Atlanta University. The Gospel Choir enjoyed the honor of performing on the steps of the Georgia State Capital Building.

The Year in Arts:

Lutheran West Lutheran West students expressed their creativity in the disciplines of fine arts, instrumental music, vocal music, and drama during the 2019-2020 school year.

The music department began the year with a successful marching band season, providing school spirit at home and away football games. The Pep Band played at home basketball games, while the Freshman Choir, Chorale, and Singers honed their selections for a performance at the annual fall and Christmas concerts. Concert Band welcomed Chika Inoue, world-renowned saxophonist, for an in-house workshop. On March 5, just before the mandated school shutdown, Lutheran West hosted its annual Festival of Bands and welcomed a record number of student musicians to perform in The Rock. The spring Pops Concert, cancelled due to COVID-19 and the school shutdown, was held virtually.

In fine arts, ceramics students utilized the art studio’s kiln to create and fire functional and decorative ceramic pieces, and learned to throw pottery on the potter’s wheel. Isabella Donahue ’20 received an Honorable Mention in the Lakewood & Rocky River Rotary Juried High School Competition for her ink painting entitled ‘Elephants.’ In Crafts class, students designed and screen-printed t-shirts, built stained glass windows, made fused glass suncatchers, created tiled mosaics, and discovered how unique altered books can be. Students in Drawing classes learned about form and light, and the translation of these elements into 2-D art. When COVID-19 forced us out of the studio, students used materials at home to continue their arts exploration.

Fall play ‘Any Number Can Die,’ a satire of the murder mystery genre, was performed in October on the Jochum Performing Arts Center stage. Spring musical ‘Newsies,’ set to be performed in April 2020, was unfortunately cancelled due to COVID-19. Prior to the school shutdown, however, the cast and crew of 'Newsies' diligently rehearsed, sang, danced, and designed costumes & sets.

Senior cast and crew members were celebrated on Lutheran West Drama's social media pages. ‘Newsies’ will now be performed during the current school year.

Student thespians also enjoyed the opportunity to participate in workshops and master classes with professional actors, singers, and dancers through Lutheran West’s involvement in the Playhouse Square Dazzle Awards program.

The Year in Athletics:

Lutheran East

Until COVID-19 halted the spring athletic season, Falcon athletic programs enjoyed a successful 2019-2020 school year.

In the fall season, Lutheran East Football played a complete 10-game season and had a record of 8 wins and 2 losses.

Lutheran East made its first football playoff appearance since 2001. In December 2019, the football program welcomed Tyler Eden as its new head coach.

Lutheran East Volleyball, also playing in the fall, enjoyed a fun-filled season of competitive games.

Basketball―both men’s and women’s―dominates the winter athletic season at Lutheran East. The Lady Falcons finished 20 and 4 and lost a close game to Elyria Catholic in the district championship. The men's team, once again poised to make a playoff run and a trip to Columbus for the state tournament, finished their season with a 20 and 3 overall record, a top 3 local ranking, a top 5 state ranking, and a fourth consecutive district championship. They were just two wins away from another trip to Columbus before COVID-19 cancelled the playoff competition.

Track and Field, typically the focus of the spring season, was hindered due to the pandemic. We applaud our track and field athletes for their dedication to training throughout the year, and we look forward to Spring 2021, when competitive track and field meets can resume.

The Cheer program was active in the fall and winter seasons, providing school spirit and energy at football and basketball games. Cheerleaders also practiced diligently for competitive cheer competitions.

Lutheran West

Fall 2019: Football finished the season with a 7-3 record, the

best record since 2009. In a year with a young team (only two seniors), varsity volleyball notched 5 wins. Varsity women's soccer finished 9-6-5 and the team was recognized with the Greater Cleveland Scholastic Soccer Coaches’ Association’s Sportsmanship, Ethics, Integrity award. Varsity men's soccer wrapped up their season with a record of 8-9-1 and earned the GCSSCA All Academic Team award. Coach Anjanette Whitman earned CVC Coach of the Year for cross country, and women's cross country runner Kristin Groppe ’20 (Bowling Green) earned CVC Most Valuable Runner as well as placed 10th in the DII District Meet, 8th in the DII Regional Meet, and 33rd in the DII State Championship Meet. The men’s cross country team had a stellar season, winning the league title (CVC) for the first time in school history. On the golf course, the women finished 6-7 and placed 3rd in the CVC. Golfer Sam Webb ’20 (Ashland University) earned 1st team all-conference. The men's golf team was 10-0 in match play and earned their 7th consecutive conference championship (6 in the PAC; 1 in the CVC). Golfer Jakob Gross ’21 was named CVC Most Valuable Player, and Coach Dale Lehrke was named CVC Coach of the Year for golf.

took to the basketball court, wrestling mat, bowling lanes, and indoor track. Varsity women's basketball went 17-7. Coach Trey Senney ’02 stepped down after 108 wins, 3 conference titles, and 2 district runner-up titles spanning from 2014-2020. Alumna Andrea Petta ’03 is now the head coach of the women's program.

Varsity men's basketball earned a record of 14-9 with the most wins since the 2014-2015 season. Jalen Barnes ’20 (Notre Dame College) joined the 1,000 career point club and was named DII OHSAA State Honorable Mention. The Longhorn bowling team finished 2nd in the Greater Cleveland Interscholastic Bowling League. JT Maslanich ’23 earned 1st team GCIBL, 1st team all NE District, state runner up for OHSAA DII, rolling a 300 for one of his state games. Men's wrestling was 10-5 in matches, with Khalid Morales '20 and Donovon Palmer ’21 earning CVC championships in their weight classes and positions in the state tournament, unfortunately cancelled due to COVID-19. Our women's wrestling team, in its first full season, included 9 wrestlers. Alayna Lopez ’21 placed 3rd in the OHSWCA state meet and Alyssa Pirro ’21 placed 1st: the first state title in Longhorn women's wrestling program history.

Due to COVID-19, the spring athletic season was cancelled for all high schools state-wide. Although a disappointment for student-athletes, families, and coaches, we look forward to being able to compete in baseball, softball, and track and field once again.

Introducing the Throughout the history of the CLHSA and our schools, our alumni have been the foundation on which we've depended.

Now, it's time to recognize and celebrate alumni from both schools who have made strides in their professional careers.

The Distinguished Alumni Program, established in 2020, will recognize a new class of distinguished alumni from each school each year. It is our hope to recognize these individuals at graduation ceremonies each May, with one of the members of that year’s class serving as the commencement speaker.

Distinguished alumni will also be featured in our school buildings, with each new class being added to those already displayed.

This program is entirely new to Lutheran West.

The 2020 Distinguished Alumni class will be the very first of its kind to be recognized at West.

Lutheran East has maintained, throughout the years, an Alumni Hall of Fame. Members already inducted into the Lutheran East Alumni Hall of Fame will now become Distinguished Alumni, along with all new inductees from this point forward.

In selecting the first Distinguished Alumni classes for each school, one fact became clear: there are so many Falcon and Longhorn alumni who have gone on to realize impressive and meaningful accomplishments in their careers. We are looking forward to recognizing a new class of impactful alumni each year.

CLHSA Earns 'Top Workplaces' Distinction In June, The Cleveland Lutheran High School Association was awarded a “Top Workplaces 2020” honor by The Plain Dealer. The list is based solely upon employee feedback through a third-party survey administered by employee engagement partner Energage, LLC. The anonymous survey, which was responded to by 85% of the CLHSA’s 115 employees, uniquely measured 15 drivers of engaged cultures that are critical to the success of any organization, including alignment, execution, and connection, just to name a few.

The Cleveland Lutheran High School Association (CLHSA) employs 115 individuals between its administrative office in Rocky River, Lutheran High School West in Rocky River, and Lutheran High School East in Cleveland Heights.

Superintendent and CEO Chris Steinmann, a 2000 graduate of Lutheran High School West, was humbled and proud to receive the Top Workplaces honor. Estate Planning:

Peace of Mind in an Uncertain World 2020 is a year that many will never forget.

The year has taught us lessons, some welcome and some unanticipated. Most of all, though, we have learned that the unexpected can happen to anyone. Being prepared for the things we can control is extremely important, especially during times when we do not know what the future may hold. One thing each of us can control is our estate plan. An estate plan, also known as a will or trust, is a collection of legal documents that set forth how you want your assets to be distributed when the Lord calls you home. These crucial documents will also map out how you want people you have appointed to handle health and financial decisions if you become unable to do so during your lifetime.

If you are like most, you have been dreading this task and putting it off until later in life. The majority of us have strong feelings about who should inherit our money, real estate, personal possessions, and other assets—and who shouldn’t? But sadly, many people pass on without ever putting their wishes in writing.

It is never too early to start planning or creating an estate plan. Putting an estate plan in place is among the most important things you can do

for your loved ones, leaving them with clear instructions as to your final wishes.

It is also crucial to keep your estate plan up to date. The estate plan that was appropriate for your family and financial situation 10 or even 5 years ago may no longer fit your current circumstances.

A well-organized estate plan can significantly ease the burden on those left behind, while poorly executed documents or lack of planning can exacerbate loved ones’ grief and trauma and add unnecessary expense.

It is easy to get overwhelmed during this process - which is likely why 65% of families do not have an estate plan in place.
