Superintendent’s Message

In late 2023, the Cleveland Lutheran High School Association officially updated its mission statement. For nearly two decades, our stated mission was to offer an academically rich, Christ-centered education in a 21st century learning environment. Given that we were pretty deep into the 21st century, it was long past time to update our mission. Over the span of a few months, the administration of our schools worked with the CLHSA Board of Directors on a new mission statement. Right before the calendar turned into 2024, we officially adopted a mission statement that will carry us for years and decades to come.

The mission statement now reads: The Cleveland Lutheran High School Association prepares and equips students to excel in service, leadership, and learning while living as disciples who are rooted and grounded in the love of Christ.

There are many things that I love about this mission statement guiding the ministry that happens in our schools. It affirms first and foremost that we are going to be guided by the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It also makes it clear that we are more than just a Christian environment—we are schools that are going to push our students to excel in the classroom, serve in their communities and churches, and fill the incredible leadership gap that exists in our culture.

Each day on our campuses, you can see the key parts of our mission statement in action. At Lutheran East, you can see students who are preparing for the annual mission trip to the Dominican Republic. You will see students who are actively leading worship in our Chapel services and who are growing through Faith Formation classes. At Lutheran West, we added a Campus Pastor (Rev. Jeff Steele-Steeber), who is supporting and directing the discipleship work that was already taking place all around school.

You can see leadership in action throughout our buildings—but maybe the most visible is the amazing work being done through The Senney Enterprises Business & Entrepreneurship Academy at Lutheran West. The students in that program began a process last spring of completely reimagining how spiritwear and dress code apparel is made available to students, families, and alumni. They launched the first student-run business in school history, and it is off to a tremendous start. You can visit the L-DubHub retail location at Luthearn West each day before school and during lunch!

Both of our schools have strongly prioritized service throughout our community through grade-level service projects.

Throughout the fall and the spring, you will see 9th grade students at local nursing homes, 10th grade students at churches in the area, and upperclassmen from both Lutheran East and Lutheran West helping beautify local parks. Service is part of the DNA of who we are, and it is a joy to see that part of our mission in action.

My favorite part of our mission statement is that, from a birds-eye view, it really embodies the entire history of what the Cleveland Lutheran High School Association has been since its inception. There are generations of Pioneers, Falcons, and Longhorns whose service and leadership have affected our communities for over seven decades. Thousands of graduates have excelled at the highest levels of education. And most importantly, for all of those graduates, the service, leadership, and learning they developed at our schools is grounded in the life-saving, powerful Gospel of Jesus Christ. While our mission statement may be new, it is also the same as we have always been!

In the pages ahead, you will see stories of our mission unfolding at Lutheran East and Lutheran West. You will see the impact that is happening in the lives of our students and the lives of the adults with whom they interact. I hope you are blessed by reading it, just as our community is blessed daily by your prayers and financial support.

Building the Future

In 2020, Lutheran East and Lutheran West leadership began envisioning what was to come for our school facilities and programs. Now, in the fall of 2024, the architects, designers, and construction crews have come and gone. The schools look better than ever, and students have more opportunities than ever before.

Growth and change: two parts of life that can be the most challenging, the

most humbling, and the most rewarding. In 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, the CLHSA began planning in earnest for what would be a four-year period of intensive growth and change for our two schools. Now, with two renovated buildings, a new mission statement, and more students than ever before, we’re grateful, humbled, and beyond excited for what the future holds.

Lutheran East On Mayfield Road, Lutheran East sits like a welcoming, shining beacon.

Its entire facade and 100% of the windows, both of which were original to the 1958 construction of the building, have been replaced and modernized.

What used to be a non-descript exterior that had passersby wondering “What is that building?” now includes a 16-foot-long illuminated sign spelling out “Lutheran High School East.” Passing the school now, one can’t help but know that THIS is the home of the Lutheran East Falcons. The cross on the front of the structure remains in place, a reminder both of the school’s long history and of the fact that above all, Lutheran East will always be a Christian environment.

Inside, there are upgrades that are less visible but just as transformative for the school community. The HVAC system has been upgraded so that the entire building is now air conditioned. Additionally, new energy-efficient lighting has been installed throughout the building. Classroom signage and wayfinding signs have been installed, so that students and visitors can easily find their way around, and so that the building is fully compliant with ADA signage requirements.

As of the publication of this article, Faith & Future, the campaign that enabled these crucial renovations, has raised in excess of $2.8 million of the $3.8 million goal. Over 200 donors have made gifts to this campaign. This includes donations from over 80 people who are new donors to Lutheran East. We’re so grateful that the Lutheran East community saw the vision set forth and believed in its impact on generations of current and future Falcons!

Lutheran West In a bold leap forward, Lutheran West’s physical facility and programmatic expansions promise more room to grow, more opportunities to seize, and more modern spaces in which to learn. | 6 |

In the largest-scale expansion and renovation project in school history, thirty-six thousand square feet of brand new spaces have been added to Lutheran West. This school year, 710 middle school and high school students, in partnership with faculty, staff, administrators, and coaches/program directors, are utilizing – and loving – the spaces.

The expansion was made possible through Lutheran West’s Forward in Faith capital campaign, a $21 million initiative that now continues beyond the completion of the physical expansion.

Forward in Faith has had three primary initiatives: 1. Physical expansion adding 36,000+ square feet of modern academic and extracurricular spaces (completed August 2024) 2. Addition of grades 6-8 at Lutheran West (added August 2022) 3. Intentional investment in, and focus on, identified Centers of Excellence (curricular and extracurricular

areas in which Lutheran West can provide exceptional academic and programmatic experiences, while developing the next generation of Christian leaders in growing and important fields within our society).

The expansion and repurposing project included: - 15 new academic and extracurricular spaces - State-of-the-art video production and editing studio with full-wall green screen and teleprompter - STEM / engineering lab - New Richard W. Linn Biology Lab - Second art studio - New John Katt Music Room with recording technology - Expansive courtyard with outdoor classroom - L-DubHub retail store inside The Senney Enterprises Business & Entrepreneurship Center - New student gathering spaces - Two new sets of restrooms - New administrative offices for Lutheran West and the CLHSA - Dedicated space for School Counseling offices - The Longhorn Room, a multi-purpose space for meetings, middle school Chapel, and more - Elevator - ADA compliant signage and wayfinding signage Now in its third school year, the middle school at Lutheran West is thriving: - 2024-2025 school year enrollment in grades 6-8 is 155 students - Continued addition of programs at the middle school level, including athletics, arts, and academic/co-curricular options Lutheran West’s Centers of Excellence include:

- The Senney Honors Academy (est. 2011) - Longhorn Athletics (est. 1958) - The Senney Enterprises Business & Entrepreneurship Academy (est. 2022) - The STEM Academy (Coming soon! Already-completed preparations for the addition of the STEM Academy include the new STEM, Engineering, and Biology labs, investment in Robotics equipment, and the addition of the video production & editing studio) - The Fine Arts Conservatory (Coming soon! Already-completed preparations for the addition of the Fine Arts Conservatory include the relocation and expansion of the John Katt Music Room and the addition of a dance studio) On August 4, 2024, Lutheran West hosted over 500 people who took part in a ribbon cutting and building dedication, followed by self-guided tours and activity stations throughout the newly expanded building. | 7 |

Activity stations featured interactive experiments and experiences that allowed attendees to better understand the Lutheran West’s Centers of Excellence. Guests were able to interact with the green screen in the video production studio, see the 3-D printers in action, visit the new School Counseling Center, shop at the L-DubHub, extract real DNA from strawberries, take photos with Longhorn athletic gear, record a song in the new music room and hear it played back, contribute to a prayer mosaic, and more.

Just before the ribbon was cut, Rev. Dr. David Buegler addressed the crowd with a dedication and prayer, saying, “May the special space designed for expanding our ministry be a testimony that we not only cherish our past, but we seek new ministry for the future.”

Remarks were also made by Greg Steinberg ’91, Chairman of the CLHSA Board of Directors; Joel S. Bahr, Lutheran West Head of School/Principal; and Chris Keller ’91, Chairman of the Lutheran West Operating Board.

Director of Development Ashley Koza shared, “The physical expansion is nearing completion, but the campaign will be ongoing. We’ll continue to raise funds as we expand student programming and opportunities through Centers of Excellence.”

Coming Home

Falcon and Longhorn alumni have long been the heartbeat of our schools’ lasting sense of community. It’s no wonder that so many of them choose to return to Lutheran East and Lutheran West to work and share their love of our schools with the next generation.

We’re consistently humbled and proud

that “community” and “family” are two of the most commonly used words to describe our schools. The welcoming, supportive environment is one of the driving forces behind the fact that so many Lutheran East and Lutheran West alumni choose to return to pursue careers at our schools. For the 2024-2025 school year, the CLHSA employs over 200 faculty members, staff, administrators, coaches, program directors, and substitutes between the two schools. Of that total, 35 are graduates of Lutheran East or Lutheran West. Let’s get to know them.

Marissa (Stover) Adams, Class of 2008

Current school and role(s): Lutheran West - Art Teacher, Assistant Softball Coach College attended: College of Wooster Studio Art major; Mathematics minor Has served the CLHSA for: 4 years Favorite part of working at Lutheran West: “The familiarity. I have grown up in the Lutheran West community. My father, Mark Stover, has been a teacher at Lutheran West since I was born! I now work with people that once taught me, but also have known me my whole life.

It is a true family community that we have and I know I will always be taken care of and prayed for.”

Favorite memory as a student at Lutheran West: “I LOVED Homecoming Week. I enjoyed making all the decorations, designing t-shirts, and playing in the games. The pep social was always a favorite, with the court and Larios. My senior year, my friend Rebecca Dobbins and I won the tug | 10 |

of war competition. Also, the annual Pops Concerts were always some of my favorite events. We sang Bohemian Rhapsody and a High School Musical medley one year and everyone was so into it!

I have always been surrounded by faith and by this community’s encouragement to allow the Lord to guide me in life. I would not be where I am today without the support I have received from the faculty and staff through the years as both a student and now a coach. Being able to surround myself in this community constantly reminds me of the blessings of faith and family. So many staff have sent their children here, and I plan for my future children to be fourthgeneration Longhorns.”

Favorite memory as a student at Lutheran West: “Friday night football games. It is incredible to think back on spending four years twirling a flag at halftime on that field as I now watch my 17 girls do it each Friday in the fall from the sidelines as a coach. Those ‘Friday night lights’ helped get me a college scholarship and continue color guard and dance team in college.”

Students are not shy to share their personal experiences. This allows me to learn more about them and make the learning conducive to their needs.

Additionally, the students at Lutheran East are ready to praise. I love being in a place that makes sure worship is authentic and directed.”

Favorite memory as a student at Lutheran West: “As a student at Lutheran West, I took statistics for the girls’ volleyball team. That experience provided me numerous leadership opportunities that I will never take for granted. With the knowledge of the sport and statistics program, I now assist the Lutheran East volleyball team!”

With the weight room renovation, I was able to create sport specific programs for all of our competitive sports. I am blessed to be able to motivate, teach, and work with our athletes all year round. I enjoy seeing them continually improve and reach their goals.”

Lutheran West football helped create who I am today. I will never forget going to battle with my Longhorn brothers every Friday night in the fall.

I loved the off-season grind in the weight room. It was the complete experience, from summer two-a-days and in-season practices, to the team bonding activities like Thursday night team dinners and post-game trips to Applebee’s. My teammates and I did everything together, and I made lifelong friendships through my experience as a Longhorn football player.”

Greetings from Lutheran East!

The theme for the 2023-2024 school year was Known by God & Wonderfully Made, which is out of David’s 139th Psalm. This theme embodies Lutheran East—our past, our present, and our future. Obviously God knows that he wonderfully made each of us, but at Lutheran East, young people have the opportunity to learn that they are known by God and how wonderfully they are each made. At Lutheran East, we prepare and equip students to excel in service, leadership, and learning while living as disciples who are rooted and grounded in the love of Christ. That’s what it means to be known by God and wonderfully made.

Our building, while wonderfully constructed in the late 1950’s, lacked some modern amenities that make teaching and learning in classrooms comfortable, including functioning windows and air conditioning. Thanks to the building renovations made possible through the Faith & Future campaign, our campus now features all new windows, an updated facade, and air conditioning throughout the building. For the first time in school history, students complained that the cafeteria was too cold … in August! While the updates were well-noted by students, families, and alumni, it was also interesting to see who else noticed—our surrounding community! Countless visitors stopped by campus to ask “What’s going on here?” to which we responded,“We can’t wait to show you!”

Generations of students have come to know God and be strengthened in their faith: in chapel, in our classrooms, and in our hallways. Countless of these graduates have gone on to be supportive alumni and donors. It is their faithful stewardship and giving that enabled the Faith & Future campaign, which will bless future generations of Falcons who, in these same spaces, will also come to learn that they are wonderfully made by a loving God. At Lutheran East, we constantly talk with our students about growth. We want them to grow academically and for them to become better students and lifelong learners. They grow physically from 14-year-old freshmen to 18-year-old seniors walking across a graduation stage. We hope through chapel and faith formation classes that they grow spiritually and emotionally.

We ask them to grow in wisdom as they learn to better control their emotions and become better decision makers. However, Psalm 139 tells us that we are wonderfully made. There is no expectation of growth or change. God made all of us, and despite our sin, we are wonderfully made. This is similar to our salvation. While we are each sinful, through Christ we are also saved. There is a completeness to this that should give each of us comfort. We are wonderfully made, and we are gracefully saved.

Our 2023-2024 boys’ basketball program continued to build upon recent success, winning a second consecutive state championship, which makes four total since 2017 and five in school history. Falcons aren’t just finding success on the hardwood in Dayton. For the 2023-2024 college basketball season, there were more former Lutheran East Falcons on Division I & II rosters than any other high school in the state!

We are wonderfully made by our God the Creator, but so is our universe! A core memory for all Clevelanders will be the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. While many schools shut their doors for fear of gridlock and chaos, Lutheran East was one of the only high schools in the area to have school, experiencing this great wonder of God’s creation with our students, their families, and our faculty & staff right from our own football field.

The future is bright at Lutheran East! The 2024-2025 school year has commenced, and over 385 students have chosen to attend Lutheran East! Our school theme for the year, Set Apart and Chosen, comes from 1 Peter 2:9. Our students’ lives will be set apart due to the love Christ shows them through our faculty, our building, and your support.

Year in Athletics: 2023-2024

2023-2024 was an exceptional school year for the Lutheran East Falcons athletic program, marked by remarkable achievements across various sports. The boys’ basketball team made history by winning back-to-back state championships, solidifying their status as a powerhouse in the state.

Their success was further highlighted by Jesse McCullouch ’24, who was awarded runner-up for Ohio’s Mr. Basketball title, the state’s most significant individual award. Jesse, who is now attending Michigan State University, joins former Lutheran East Falcon players Cody Head ’23 (Arkansas State), Jalin Billingsley ’21 (Eastern Michigan), Jared Lary ’21 (Detroit Mercy), and Nehemiah Benson ’20 (Binghamton), as the 5th Lutheran East boys’ basketball player to be currently playing Division I college basketball. Lutheran East also has more graduates playing men’s collegiate basketball across all divisions than any other school in Ohio!

The girls’ sports teams also made significant strides this year. The volleyball team achieved a major milestone by winning their first playoff game since 2007, a triumph that brought renewed energy and excitement to the program. Meanwhile, the girls’ basketball team had an outstanding season, advancing all the way to the district semifinals, showcasing their determination and skill.

This year also marked the inaugural season of the girls’ flag football team, adding a new and exciting option to our athletic offerings. The team showed great potential, setting a strong foundation for future seasons. They even played a game at Browns Stadium!

Falcons in track & field, cheer, and football had memorable seasons and should be proud of how they represented “The Lue”! The athletic department would also like to thank all students who consistently supported our Falcons in the “LUEnatics” student section, as well as all sponsors of our athletic programs, including Ganley Chevy Aurora, Ganley Nissan Mayfield, and Metro Health.

Greetings from Lutheran West!

One day last May, I stood in one of the nearly-completed parts of Lutheran West’s building expansion, handing out Sharpies to members of the Class of 2024. For this class, their junior and senior years were affected by the consistent construction, but they would graduate before the “new spaces” were open for use. In short, they were getting the short end of the stick. We wanted them to be able to make their mark before leaving Lutheran West – hence the Sharpies. We decided to let them literally leave their mark on the concrete subfloor beneath the student gathering area at the new main entry.

Interestingly, the 2023-2024 school year was the first in which we used our new school mission statement: Lutheran West prepares and equips students to excel in service, leadership, and learning while living as disciples who are rooted and grounded in the love of Christ.

The areas of service, leadership, and learning are ways in which we see each student grow during their time as a Longhorn— growth that occurs because they can depend on the rooting and grounding of Christ’s love in our school community. In 20232024, Lutheran West students in grades 6-12 excelled in those areas, in far too many ways to report here.

Academically, students explored the over 100 unique courses that Lutheran West now offers. They joined the book club and they studied the Word of God in classes and in Bible study. They competed on the Academic Challenge television show. They took college-level courses, learned languages, learned to bake and cook, finally had that ‘ah-a’ moment in math, explored the sciences with hands-on experiments and state-of-the-art equipment like our 3-D printer and robotics components, and so much more.

The school founded its first student-run business through the Senney Enterprises Business & Entrepreneurship Academy, an onsite school store named ‘L-DubHub’.

Senney Honors Academy members traveled to Nashville on a college tour, visiting Belmont University and Vanderbilt University.

Student artists created, student musicians played, and student vocalists sang – they explored their own creativity and passions while beautifying our school environment with their God-given talents.

In May 2024, the drama program won two Dazzle Awards, the first in school history, for its spring production of ‘Curtains! [ High School Edition ].’ The program was nominated in seven categories, and came away with two wins for Best Technical Execution and Best Musical (Tier 1). In April, students in 6th-8th grades put on Lutheran West’s very first middle school play.

Athletically, teams and individual student-athletes excelled on the field, court, track, course, mat, and lanes.

Students initiated service projects throughout the year, and ventured out into our local communities to serve organizations like The City Mission (at Laura’s Home) and Concord Reserve (Westlake) during the fall 2023 Service Day. When I consider the ‘excelling in service, leadership, and learning’ part of our new mission, I’d say that 2023-2024 was a huge success.

But I believe that the second part of the mission statement – ‘who are rooted and grounded in the love of Christ’ – is the reason why students are able to excel here at Lutheran West and beyond, the reason why their Lutheran West experience is so rewarding, and why they can confidently go out into the world to live as Christian disciples and servant leaders after their graduations.

When I look at the photos taken on the day the senior class signed the concrete subfloor, none of the students wrote ‘state semi-final champs’ or ‘straight As’ beneath their names. When tasked with leaving their mark on their school, they included Bible verses (including Joshua 1:9, Colossians 3:17, Isaiah 60:22, Romans 8:28, John 16:33, Romans 5:3-5, Ephesians 4:32, Philippians 4:13). They quite literally ensured that the students who would follow in their footsteps for decades to come would be walking upon the Word of God – that they’d be rooted and grounded in the love of Christ.

Thank you for rooting and grounding our mission through your continued support of God’s incredible work through our ministry.

Year in Arts: 2023-2024

Special Feature: Drama Department Wins First Dazzle Awards in School History for ‘Curtains! (School Edition)’ The Lutheran West Drama program had an overwhelmingly successful successful 2023-2024, beginning with fall musical “Little Shop of Horrors,” which ran from November 17-19, 2023.

New for the 2023-2024 school year in Drama was Lutheran West’s very first middle school play! Students in grades 6-8 performed an adaptation of classic children’s book ‘Miss Nelson is Missing!’ on April 19 & 20, 2024.

The spring musical, “Curtains! (School Edition)” ran a four-show stint from March 21-24, 2024. The show earned a school record seven Dazzle Awards nominations in the categories of: Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Technical Execution, Best Choreography Execution, Best Ensemble/Chorus, Best Supporting Actor - Rafael Alarcon ’24, and Best Musical (Tier 1 - budget less than $13,000).

We’re thrilled to share that the program won in the categories of Best Technical Execution and Best Musical (Tier 1)! Congratulations to everyone involved with this award-winning production!

By obtaining a Best Musical nomination, Lutheran West was able to perform a number from “Curtains!” live on stage during the Dazzle Awards ceremony at Playhouse Square to a crowd of 3,000 people.

The Dazzle Awards program honors excellence in high school musical theatre and recognizes the importance of performing arts in education throughout our Northeast Ohio communities. The program offers arts education opportunities for students, including master classes, workshops, and more. The culmination each spring is the Dazzle Awards at Playhouse Square, presented by Pat and John Chapman: Chapman: an awards ceremony which recognizes excellence in musical theatre productions and individual performances during the school year. An independent panel of judges attends spring productions at participating schools and provides ratings in 12 categories, with the winners announced at at The Playhouse Square Dazzle Awards, (modeled after the Tony Awards) . Held on May 18, 2024, the 2024 Dazzle Awards included a record 37 participating schools in Cuyahoga, Geagua, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, and Summit counties.

Year in Arts: 2023-2024 Fine Arts

Lutheran West fine arts students were incredibly creative, taking courses in Drawing, Painting, Ceramics, Graphic Design, Sculpture, Printmaking, Crafts, Photography, and more.

The fine arts department is excited to share that with the recent building expansion and renovation, Lutheran West now has two full-time art studios. More students than ever before are exploring their creativity and self-expression through art! This spring, look for a new publication from the CLHSA featuring student artwork in various forms of media, along with creative writing pieces.

Class of 2024 award winners in Fine Arts were Stella Menzalora (Outstanding Achievement in Graphic Design), Sophia Quintana (Outstanding Achievement in Painting), and Skiler Johnson and Grace Lauterbach (Outstanding Achievement in Art - High School Career).

Dance The 2023-2024 school year was the first for Lutheran West’s Dance courses! Using the new onsite dance studio, students were able to take courses in both Dance and Choreography.

Instrumental Music Student musicians in marching band, concert band, and middle school band performed several concerts throughout the 2023-2024 school year. Highlights included marching band performances during football games, pep band, the Christmas Concert, the Pops Concert, and the Festival of Bands.

Instrumental Music Department award winners in the Class of 2024 were Coen Bonacci (The John Philip Sousa Band Award), Jonathan Barnes (The Patrick S. Gilmore Band Award), Amy Zell (The John Katt Band Award), and William Brady (The Sempre Fidelis Award).

Vocal Music Student vocalists showcased their talents at several concerts throughout the school year, including on campus and at East Mount Zion Church. Bel Canto (the select choir group) led worship at various churches on Sundays throughout the year.

All five choirs performed at Lutheran West for our Christmas Concert, our Spring Worship Night, and our Pops Concert. Bel Canto led worship at Chapel services and sang at graduation.

Special recognition was awarded to Class of 2024 members Anna Van Farowe (Musician of the Year), Yurledis Zielinski (National School Choral Award), Emma Rudy (Choral Section Leader MVP - Alto), Rafael Alarcon (Choral Section Leader MVP - Bass), Rebecca Liest (Choral Section Leader MVP Soprano), and Luke Wise (Choral Section Leader MVP - Tenor).

For the 2024-2025 school year, the department shares that the choirs have grown to a collective 160 students!

Fall 2023

Football earned an overall record of 7-4 and 2nd place (4-1 record) in the CVC Chagrin Division. First team recognition was awarded to Xavier Alvarez ’24 (OL), Da’Quarius Bradley ’25 (RB), Mykel Robinson ’26 (DL), JoJo Ravenel ’24 (LB), and Jamyan Theodore ’26 (DB). Second team honors were earned by Greg Fuentes ’24 (TE), Nick Hurt ’24 (OL), Jamyan Theodore ’26 (WR), De’Von McDougle ’27 (LB), Winner Divison ’25 (DB), Jayden Theodore ’24 (DB); Honorable Mentions were Eric Abron ’24 (OL), Jalany Theodore ’24 (QB). The team finished the season 11th in Region 10 Division III, losing 31-22 to #6 Ontario High School in the District Semi-Final game.

Volleyball’s overall record was an impressive 20-4, with a 9-1 record in the CVC Metro Division. The team tied for the Conference Championship with Independence. CVC Metro Player of the Year was Sophia Simon ’24 (MH), who also earned First Team honors. Morgan Morley ’24 (Libero) and Arry Garcia ’25 (Setter) earned Second Team recognition, with Honorable Mentions earned by Hannah Bryda ’26 (DS) and Paige Scheidemantel ’24 (OH). The team entered the OHSAA tournament as the #9 seed out of 38 teams in Northeast DII, and advanced to the District Semi-Final by beating Bard and Holy Name. Their season concluded with a loss to Padua in the District Semi-Final match to Padua.

Men’s Soccer had an overall record of 3-13-2 and a CVC Chagrin Division record of 2-2-1. The team was led by standouts Carter Stanaczyk ’24 at forward, Carter Bonacci ’24 at midfield, and Evan King ’25 at goalkeeper. They entered the OHSAA Tournament #31 seed out of 34 teams. In an exciting back-andforth game, they lost 1-0 to #4 Rocky River in the Sectional Final. At the conclusion of the 2023 season, Lutheran West hired David Quayle ’17 as Head Coach and Program Director.

Women’s Soccer finished with an overall record of 1-13-4.

Conference honors went to YoYo Zielinski ’24 (Second Team); Macey Fowler ’27 and Ava Adya ’26 (Honorable Mention). In the post-season OHSAA Tournament, coming in as the #30 seed out of 33 teams, they knocked off #22 Canton South in the Sectional Semi-Final 2-1, then lost to #1 seed Rocky River in the Sectional Final, who was the eventual state runner up.

In Golf, the men’s team finished as CVC Metro Champions, with a record of 6-0! Six players earned recognitions, including Ray Pavlick ’26 and Eric Dill ’24 (First Team); Trey Kemper ’26, JJ Hughes ’25, and Alex Roland ’26 (Second Team); Brendan Middendorf ’24 (Honorable Mention). Head Coach Dale Lehrke was named CVC Metro Coach of the Year. The women’s team, coached by Megan Miller, enjoyed a competitive season on the links and developed players and skills to carry them into future seasons.

Men’s and women’s Cross Country runners participated in a fall season full of races and training to develop their skills as distance runners.

Cheer: Fall season cheerleaders provided the Longhorn school spirit we all looked forward to at Friday night football games!

Winter 2023-2024 Men’s Basketball had an exceptional season, with an overall record of 24-3 (exempt from CVC play). The team was a #1 DII AP Ohio ranked team all season and ranked as high as #4 in the Cleveland.com area poll across all divisions. Notable wins were against Akron Buchtel, St. Vincent St. Mary, Garfield Heights, Lutheran East, and Holy Name. They entered the OHSAA tournament as the #1 seed out of 62 teams! Post-season play resulted in a 73-34 win against Shaw in the Sectional Final, a 65-44 win against Jefferson 65-44 in the District Semi-final, a 74-37 win against Howland 74-37 in the District Final, and a win against Toledo Central Catholic 54-30 in the Regional Semi-Final. Their season came to an end with a 55-46 loss to powerhouse Shelby in the Regional Final matchup. Jayson Levis ’24 earned DII First Team All District and DII First Team All State, and commited to continue his playing career at The University of Findlay. Derek Fairley ’24 earned DII First Team All District and DII Second Team All State.

In Women’s Basketball, new coach Derrick Russell led the varsity team to an overall record of 14-9 (up from 5-18 in previous season 2022-2023). Their CVC Metro record was 8-4 (0-12 in 2022-2023). First Team honors were awarded to Ce Grant ’24 (G); Second Team to Maddie Kandrach ’26 (G); Honorable Mention to Ava Adya ’26 (G) and Aliciana Medina ’26 (F). Entering the post-season OHSAA tournament as the #26 seed out of 65, they eventually lost to Chagrin Falls in the Sectional Final with a final score of 62-42.

In Bowling, the women’s team battled all season, finishing 6-11 in the North Shore Bowling Conference, good for 8th place out of 12 teams. The girls fought in the Sectional but came up short.

A young team looks to build upon momentum heading into next season. The men’s team finished 1st in the North Shore Bowling Conference, posting a record of 15-2. The Longhorns also captured 1st at the CVC Tournament. West rode that energy into the OHSAA Division II Sectional Tournament, posting a 3669, good for 3rd place and a berth to the District tournament. | 21 |

The Women’s Wrestling team of 15 wrestlers finished with a record of 5-3. They competed in tournaments throughout the season, with a 1st place finish at the Mapleton Girls’ Tournament and 2nd place finishes at both the Ashton Hynd Battle By the Lake Tournament and Chippewa Girls’ Tournament. In preregionals, they placed 3rd; in Regionals the team placed 7th; at the OHSAA State Tournament they ranked 55th. Leslie Sullivan ’24 (140 lbs) and Paris Willis ’24 (170 lbs) were state qualifiers, with Paris placing 7th at the State Tournament. In the 2023-2024 season, there were 7 new school records set: Fastest Pin - Paris Willis and Olivia Grace (10 seconds); Most Pins in a Season Paris Willis (44); Most Pins in a Career - Paris Willis (94); Most Takedowns in a Season: Paris Willis (52); Most Takedowns in a Career - Paris Willis (135); Most Wins in a Season - Paris Willis (47); Most Wins in a Career - Paris Willis (114).

Softball ended with an overall record of 8-10 and a CVC Metro Record of 3-5, earning them 3rd place in the conference. First Team honors were awarded to Leslie Sullivan ’24 (P) and Larissa Sullivan ’24 (OF). Kailyn Caster ’25 (DH/Utility) earned Second Team, and Kellie Kashubeck ’24 and Emmy Hayes ’26 earned Honorable Mentions. In post-season play, they were seeded #17 out of 33 teams and finished with a loss to Cloverleaf in the Sectional Final. The Softball program marked its first year playing home games on campus at Lutheran West, instead of at an offsite field. A special event was held to celebrate the retrofitting of the field to allow both Baseball and Softball to play on the same field, plus the addition of field lights and a batting cage facility.

Head Coach Amy Sullivan stepped down after the season (thank you to Amy for her time and talent!), resulting in the hiring of Jackie (Mader) Thomas ’17 to take the helm next season.

Men’s Wrestling finished 3rd in the CVC Tournament. CVC First Team recognition was given to DJ Otero ’26 (106 lbs) and Devin Talton ’27 (190 lbs). Second Team honors were earned

by Darrel Leeson ’25 (126 lbs) and Luca Mead ’24 (138 lbs); Honorable Mention by Cohen Thomas ’25 (150 lbs) and Wes Larson ’26 (132 lbs). DJ Otero ’26 placed 6th at the 2024 OHSAA State Tournament at 126 lbs. Otero finished his sophomore campaign with an impressive 46 wins. He placed 5th at the North Coast Classic, 2nd at the Medina Invitational, 1st at the Perry Pin City Tournament, 5th at the Wadsworth Grizzly Invitational, 2nd at the Chagrin Valley Conference Tournament, 1st at the Sectional Tournament, and 3rd at the District Tournament. He is the 11th Lutheran West wrestler in school history to place at the State Tournament and the first since Donovan Palmer’s 3rd place finish in 2021.

College Signings

In Cheer, the winter season cheerleaders were steadfast support for the basketball program during their season. Thank you, cheerleaders!

Spring 2024

The Athletic Department held a College Signing Day in May for the eleven Longhorn student-athletes who had signed to play at the collegiate level. At the time of the signing day, four more seniors had college offers but were still considering their options.

Of the 134 total seniors in the Class of 2024, 71 (52%) of them played sports while at West. Of that 71, fifteen will play in college.

Interestingly, all eleven who made their decisions prior to the spring signing day opted to attend a college or university in Ohio!

Track & Field had a great year, with almost 70 individuals participating. The highlight of the year was Mo Kori ’24 breaking school records in the 110m and 300m hurdles; Mo ended up as regional runner-up in both races and placed 7th in the state meet in the 110m hurdles. Maddie Jenkins ’24 qualified for Indoor Nationals in Boston in the weight throw and qualified for Outdoor Nationals in Philadelphia in the hammer throw.

Baseball’s overall record was 13-8, with a CVC Metro Record of 6-2. Adam Flachbart ’24 was named CVC Metro Player of the Year. Eight of his teammates also earned recognition, including First Team honors for AJ Biascochea ’25 (IF), Bryce Groppe ’24 (OF), Adam Flachbart ’24 (IF), Steve Alfernik ’25 (Utility), and Eric Dill ’24 (Pitcher); Second Team for Jacob Montagu ’24 (IF); Honorable Mention to Jonathan Barnes ’24 (OF) and Brandon Schneider ’25 (Catcher). The team entered the OHSAA Tournament as the #7 seed out of 27 teams, ending the season with a loss in the Sectional Final to Hawken. | 22 |

Congratulations, Graduates: The Class of 2024 In May 2024, the CLHSA celebrated Commencements for the 198 graduates of Lutheran East and Lutheran West.

64 graduates received diplomas from Lutheran High School East in a graduation ceremony held on May 17 at Mt Zion in Oakwood. The graduation speaker was Mr. Jack Williams, Esq., Lutheran East Class of 1974 and 2002 inductee into the school’s Distinguished Alumni. Mr. Williams is currently a practicing lawyer in Atlanta, GA. The class speakers were Michaela Harris and Makayla Williams. The Class of 2024 chose a verse from Psalm 139 to inspire their class theme: Known by God and Wonderfully Made. Congratulations to Lutheran East’s newest alumni!

At Lutheran West’s commencement on May 26 at Grace Church in Middleburg Heights, 134 graduates received diplomas. The graduation speaker was Dr. James D. Heidmann, Class of 1982 and 2023 Distinguished Alumni inductee. Dr. Heidmann has had an incredible career in aerospace turbomachinery, and is currently the Deputy Director of Advanced Air Vehicles Program at NASA. Student addresses were given by the two Christian Stewardship Award winners: Alayna Adams and Carter Stanaczyk. Congratulations, Class of 2024!

The 2024-2025 student staff of the L-DubHub

First Student-Run Business s Launched at Lutheran West

In August 2024, Lutheran West’s Senney Enterprises Business & Entrepreneurship Academy launched the L-DubHub, the school’s first business venture envisioned, implemented, and run by students.

With the completion of the Forward in Faith building expansion, the spaces that had been the school’s main offices for many decades transformed into the home of The Senney Enterprises Business & Entrepreneurship Academy (SEBEA), a Center of Excellence program spearheaded by Mr. Wally Senney ’73 and his Cleveland-based company, Senney Enterprises, along with detailed planning and execution by Dean of the Business Academy, Mr. Jim Heal.

During the 2022-2023 school year, students taking business courses, particularly the Senior Capstone class within the Academy, began imagining the possibilities for student-run businesses.

“We knew that the first business we took from ideation to reality had to meet a few key requirements. It had to be a physical business location housed on campus. It had to be a business model that required the involvement and teamwork of many students. It also had to fulfill an existing need that was being experienced by our school community. And finally, it had to have the capacity to be successful and profitable within a relatively short period of time,” says Heal.

“A ton of great ideas were proposed. But in the end, it was apparent to our entire team of students that a school store was the clear winner. It fulfilled all of the requirements set forth, and the kids were excited about it. Spiritwear and dress code apparel had been a frustration for our community for years, especially since the supply chain issues spurred by the pandemic years.”

Seniors taking the Capstone in the spring semester of 2024 were charged with creating the business plan and laying crucial groundwork for the store. “Their hard work and imagining of what could be was something spectacular to witness,” remarks Heal, “and the store as it exists today is because of those students’ vision.”

JJ Hughes ’25, current senior (pictured 1st row, 4th from right in group photo on opposite page), is the General Manager of the L-DubHub. “It’s funny how God works,” says JJ, “because as of early May 2024, I wasn’t even considering pursuing business, let alone leading and managing one. I was recruited by the Business Academy team, and I immediately embraced the vision and business plan that was in motion. I realized at the beginning of the summer that it would be up to me and a handful of returning students to take the reins of everything that the just-graduated seniors had begun.”

During the summer of 2024, JJ and a team of fellow students voluntarily spent nearly 500 collective hours at school―planning, preparing, ordering initial inventory, assembling the store’s merchandising fixtures, setting pricing, training themselves on the store’s POS (point of sale) system, and more. They met with school departmental leadership in facilities, marketing, finance, technology, and general administration to determine their course of action for implementation of their plan and integration of the store into the school’s pre-existing operations.

“The Grand Opening event on August 4 was approaching so quickly,” says JJ, “but our team came together to make certain that the L-DubHub would open on schedule.”

Not only are students managing the store’s day-to-day operations, but they are in classroom sessions during their school day in which they learn business concepts and best practices behind what they’re putting into action with the L-DubHub. Recognizing a need after the store opened, they even conceptualized the L-DubHub Mobile store, which is a large transportable cart that can be stocked and rolled out to the athletic fields or parking lot when needed for merchandise sales at events.

“We talk about it all,” says Heal. “We’re learning about business operations, business plans and strategy, marketing, merchandising, inventory management and supplier relations, customer service, management, and anything else that impacts their business.”

That’s the key word, Heal says―their business. “It’s truly their own, and I’m just here to teach, guide, and manage the big picture of the Academy’s trajectory.”

“We did it all, by ourselves, and made mistakes along the way,” says JJ. “We’re constantly learning as we go, and we’re blessed to have the opportunity to learn through real experience, whether that’s in the form of successes or mistakes.

The student team we’ve built—we all believe in that idea.”

In fact, when the students worked with the school’s marketing department to design the logo and branding for the L-DubHub, they made certain it included a tagline they came up with: By Us. For Us. Heal notes that the store’s business model is set up so that each year, certain students will be managers and leaders of various teams within the business. Then, when managers and leaders graduate, others who have been learning the ropes as ‘associates’ will assume those managerial roles.

Heal also shares that recent research has determined that many young adults in “Gen Z” are lacking in crucial professional skills that previous generations had. According to an article published on Intelligent.com in September 2024, “Many recent college graduates may struggle with entering the workforce for the first time as it can be a huge contrast from what they are used to throughout their education journey. They are often unprepared for a less structured environment, workplace cultural dynamics, and the expectation of autonomous work. Although they may have some theoretical knowledge from college, they

often lack the practical, real-world experience and soft skills required to succeed in the work environment. These factors, combined with the expectations of seasoned workers, can create challenges for both recent grads and the companies they work for.”

In the conceptual planning of the Senney Enterprises Business & Entrepreneurship Academy and its structure, this sentiment was strongly considered.

“It’s our job as educators to not only impart knowledge, but also to impart preparation for life,” says Heal. “The Academy is designed to provide real-world experience

that will give Lutheran West graduates an edge over their Gen Z counterparts who are lacking in the areas being identified by employers.”

The same Intelligent.com article cites that over half of hiring managers interviewed say that recent college graduates are ‘unprepared’ for the workforce.

The L-DubHub is the only business enterprise in Northeast Ohio that is entirely created and run by students at a high school. The only other similar model in the state of Ohio can be found in the Cincinnati area, at Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy’s entrepreneurship program. The future of The Senney Enterprises Business & Entrepreneurship Academy is bright. The hope is that the L-DubHub will be just one of several student-run businesses that come out of the Academy’s curriculum.

But more importantly, the future of the students who go through the Academy is bright. They’ll graduate from Lutheran West not only having received a top-notch business education, but also having had practical, real-world business experience that is unparalleled, even for most college business graduates.

In the years to come, we can’t wait to share with you not only the incredible business ventures of the Academy, but also the incredible things our SEBEA graduates have gone on to do in their lives as young professionals.

Alumni Events: Lutheran East

Lutheran Eastʼs new Alumni Office planned and hosted several events during the 2023 - 2024 school year, with more events to come in 2025.

April 18, 2024: Senior Banquet for the Class of 2024 The Alumni Office invited soon-to-be gradautes, their families, and our faculty and staff to a special dinner held at Lutheran East. They were presented with information on post-graduation involvement with the school and opportunities for networking through an alumni directory, and heard messages from administrators Mr. Andrew Prusinski and Mr. Matt Luecke.

June 7, 2024: Gathering of the Classes of 1959-1966 Alumni from these graduating years attended dinner at Hofbrauhäus, where they enjoyed fellowship and sharing of memories from their years at Lutheran East.

July 13-14, 2024 Classes of 1990-1999 The class of 1994 celebrated their 30th Reunion with the entire 1990s decade! They had a tour of the school, socialized and played games at Pins Mechanical Co., had brunch at Pinstripe, and gathered together for a Chapel service.

July 20, 2024: Class of 2014 The class celebrated their 10th Reunion at Lutheran East with a school tour, food, board games, and shared memories with their former teachers, Mr. Tripplett and Rev. Childs.

November 2023: Alumnae Panel on College Planning with Women’s Basketball Alumnae Megan (Blackburn) Corpas ’14, Lydia Hessler ’16, and Becky (Mooney) Thompson ’98. The alumnae shared tips, information, and personal experience with the 2023-2024 women’s team (photos: left - top three photos).

December 21, 2023: School Construction Tour Members of the classes of 2021 and 2022 who were home from college for Christmas Break visited the under-construction campus for a tour (photo - left, 4th image down).

January 26, 2024: Alumni Wrestling Night Over 20 alumni wrestlers (from both the men’s and women’s programs) attended the Annual Alumni Wrestling Night. They were recognized at center-mat during a home match (photo: below).

Before she files her taxes in April 2025, she makes a gift to the LSGO of Ohio in the amount of $250 and specifies her grandchild's Lutheran school as the recipient. Her Ohio tax liability (amount owed) should go down to $0.

INDIVIDUAL FILER WHO TYPICALLY OWES THE STATE MORE THAN $750 IN STATE TAX LIABILITY Paul prepares his 2024 tax return in March of 2025, and it looks like he’ll owe $900 in Ohio state taxes. He makes a gift to the LSGO of Ohio to support his favorite participating Lutheran school in the amount of $750 on April 1, 2025.

His Ohio state income tax liability (amount owed) will likely go down to $150.

Prior to filing his 2024 taxes, he gives a gift of $500 to the LSGO of Ohio. His contribution of $500 to a registered SGO enhances his refund and he now receives a state refund in the amount of $850.

They cover their tax liability via their withholdings and typically receive a state refund of about $175. They would like to help families who want to attend their local Lutheran school, so they decide to make a gift to the LSGO of Ohio in the amount of $1,000 prior to filing their 2024 taxes (they are eligible to claim a tax credit of up to $1,500). Their contribution of $1,000 results in a total state refund in the amount of $1,175.

MARRIED FILING JOINTLY WHO OWE THE STATE $750 OR LESS IN STATE TAX LIABILITY Carlos and Jenna Gonzalez prepare their 2024 taxes in March of 2025 and see that they’ll owe $948 in Ohio state taxes. They find out that their Ohio tax liability will be $1,800. Before the tax company files their taxes, the Smiths give $1,500 to the LSGO of Ohio and they provide the acknowledgement letter they receive in the mail to their tax professional. Their Ohio tax liability goes down to $300.

A: There isn’t one! This program really is as good as it sounds. It’s a way for Ohio taxpayers to contribute to scholarships at schools that mean something to them, while also qualifying for a dollar-for-dollar tax credit* against their Ohio state tax liabilities.

Q: Can I make sure my donation goes to the school(s) of my choice?

A: Absolutely. As long as the school(s) is a Participating School with the LSGO of Ohio, you can designate your gift to one or more school, including Lutheran East and Lutheran West.

The funds will be placed into an account for distribution as scholarships to families at the school(s) you select when you make your gift.

Q: How much should I give in order to maximize my tax credit?

A: It depends! If you typically receive a refund, a gift to the LSGO of Ohio has the potential to increase your refund. If you typically owe state taxes, a gift can offset your tax bill, up to but not exceeding your tax liability amount, and up to the tax credit limits of $750 (individual) or $1,500 (filing jointly). Contact the LSGO of Ohio and we can walk you through where to find your state tax liability on last year’s tax return.

Q: How do the Participating Schools allocate the scholarship money?

A: Per guidelines by the State of Ohio, funds given as gifts to an SGO (Scholarship Granting Organization) like the LSGO of Ohio must be prioritized for students from low-income families.

However, once those priorities have been met, all families can apply and potentially receive an LSGO of Ohio scholarship. Families can apply for an LSGO of Ohio scholarship with their child's school.

Q: How is the LSGO of Ohio different from other scholarship opportunities schools may offer?

A: Depending on the school, various scholarships and/or tuition assistance may be available, including merit-based scholarships and state programs like the EdChoice Scholarship. The LSGO of Ohio is unique in that it adds an additional means of tuition assistance for schools to offer to families, while also providing a tax credit* to donors.

Q: How can I support the CLHSA's schools through the LSGO of Ohio?

A: Donors to the LSGO of Ohio can specify the Participating School(s) to which their donation should be directed. Lutheran East and Lutheran West are both Participating Schools and students at our schools will directly benefit from your gift to the LSGO of Ohio.
