Hospitality Facing “Steep Cliff-Edge” If Energy Support Bill Is Cut

The hospitality and licensed on trade will face a steep cliff edge by April, as a combination of escalating energy costs, rail strikes, inflation and staffing issues threatened to engulf the sector, sector leaders have said. The warning comes as Chancellor Jeremy Hunt Jeremy Hunt has told business leaders not to expect the same level of Government support with escalating energy bills when he announces fresh help in a weeks’ time. The existing Energy Bill Relief Scheme, which the Chancellor describes as “unsustainably expensive” is set to come to an end in March and Mr Hunt is

under enormous pressure to provide urgent clarity on what new help he might provide. Mr Hunt met with the Confederation of British Industry, Federation of Small Businesses, British Chambers of Commerce, Institute of Directors, Make UK, UK Hospitality, and the British Beer and Pub Association telling them that a package providing support at a “lower level” than current measures would be available to them beyond March, promising to avoid a “cliff edge” in curtailing the subsidy.
