An unprecedented coalition of more than 800 hospitality businesses has written to the Prime Minister calling for a clear plan to reduce VAT on hospitality from 20% to 10%, arguing that the current rate is contributing to business closures, job losses and pressure on high streets.

The open letter, organised as part of the #VATsTheProblem campaign, brings together signatories from every corner of the hospitality trade — from celebrity chefs and national pub and brewing groups to independent, single-site bars, cafes and restaurants.

Names attached to the letter include chefs Andi Oliver, Angela Hartnett, Clare Smyth, Heston Blumenthal, Jason Atherton, Nathan Outlaw, Paul Ainsworth and Tom Kerridge, alongside major operators such as Fuller's, Greene King, Loungers, Marston's, Mitchells & Butlers, Wetherspoon's, Pizza Express, Wagamama, Wahaca, Marriott International and Center Parcs. The organisers note that the large majority of signatories are small and medium-sized businesses anchoring high streets and town centres around the country.
