The Government has confirmed a package of licensing extensions and regulatory relaxations designed to help pubs, bars and licensed venues capitalise on the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with both England and Scotland participating in the tournament for the first time in a generation.

While England’s group-stage fixtures are scheduled for 21:00 or 22:00 BST kickoffs, many international matches—including some home nation fixtures such as Scotland’s opening game—will fall overnight, with start times as late as 02:00 and 03:00.

Extended licensing hours and live tournament broadcasts are expected to deliver a massive sales boost to UK pubs with the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) projecting a £275 million revenue increase, with 55 million additional pints poured if a home nation reaches the final

Despite heightened demand from operators, there is currently no blanket extension to licensing hours for group-stage matches.
