Gathering Items for Ritual

On the first day of Kwanzaa, or the days leading up to it, gather the 7 symbols: Mazao, Mkeka, Muhindi, Mishumaa saba, Kinara, Kikombe cha umoja, and Zawadi.

  • Mazao (fruits, nuts, veggies)

  • Mkeka (kente cloth, mudcloth placemat)

  • Muhindi (ears of corn)

  • Mishumaa saba (the seven candles, 3 red, 3 green, one black)

  • Kinara (candleholder)

  • Kikombe cha umoja* (communal cup of unity)

  • Zawadi (Gifts)

Daily Ritual

  • Light candle (3 green candles on the right, 3 red candles on the left, black candle in the center)

  • Read quote

  • Play song

  • Share what this kwanzaa principle means to you. You can share in a group, pair off if you have a larger group, or write in a journal or record a voice note if you are on your own

  • Extinguish candle

The communal cup is typically passed around for everyone to take a sip. Have small shot glasses available to pour from the kikombe cha umoja. The ritual doesn’t change its meaning without spreading germs!
