Gathering Items for Ritual
On the first day of Kwanzaa, or the days leading up to it, gather the 7 symbols: Mazao, Mkeka, Muhindi, Mishumaa saba, Kinara, Kikombe cha umoja, and Zawadi.
Mazao (fruits, nuts, veggies)
Mkeka (kente cloth, mudcloth placemat)
Muhindi (ears of corn)
Mishumaa saba (the seven candles, 3 red, 3 green, one black)
Kinara (candleholder)
Kikombe cha umoja* (communal cup of unity)
Zawadi (Gifts)
Daily Ritual
Light candle (3 green candles on the right, 3 red candles on the left, black candle in the center)

Extinguish candle
The communal cup is typically passed around for everyone to take a sip. Have small shot glasses available to pour from the kikombe cha umoja. The ritual doesn’t change its meaning without spreading germs!
