Meet Michelle Earl This eBook has been created with Michelle to help you celebrate NAIDOC Week! As a proud Darkinjung woman with Wonnarua ties, Michelle has a personal connection to the Hunter Valley and respectfully teaches and celebrates the traditional Aboriginal culture of the communities that reside across the valley. If you are interested in Michelle’s workshops, you can learn more here!

We would like to acknowledge the Wonnarua people as the traditional owners and custodians of the land upon which CleverPatch™ stands. CleverPatch™ recommends educators, teachers and schools work in consultation with their local Aboriginal Communities (start locally and extend out geographically) when planning activities & learning experiences. Any creative or art making activity that mirrors or replicates Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islands cultural experiences should always be undertaken in consultation with the appropriate owners of that cultural property.

Animal Scene Materials: • Egg Carton Tray – 19168 • Wooden Pegs – Natural – Pack of 48 – 18698 • Natural Raffia – 25g – Set of 10 Colours – 19500 • Wooden Beads – Natural – 340g Pack – 10841 • CleverPatch™ Cardboard – White – A4 – Pack of 100 – 16288 • CleverPatch™ Triangular Coloured Markers – Pack of 10 – 16232 • CleverPatch™ Tacky Glue – 250ml – 16494 • Other materials required: Scissors, a ruler and templates (page 8).

This activity allows children to explore their natural environment; just like Michelle loves to do when she goes bush.

1. Print out the templates on page 8 onto white cardboard. Decide if you would like to create a seascape or landscape scene. Decorate the animals for your chosen scene and cut them out.

2. Cut two rows in, along the short edge of the egg carton so you have 2 rows of 5 egg wells.

3. Cut 7-8 different lengths of raffia no longer than 30cm long. You will need 5 groups of raffia lengths in colours that resemble grass or coral depending on your chosen scene.

4. Twist the ends of one raffia group together and insert into a wooden bead. Glue in place and allow to dry. Repeat for the other 4 groups and allow to dry.

5. Glue the back of each animal template to the top, flat side of a wooden peg, ensuring the opening is facing down. Allow to dry.

6. Glue each bead to separate egg wells, wherever you would like them to be in your scene. Allow to dry.

7. Cut small lengths of natural raffia to create ground coverage or sand. Gather and place natural objects like fallen leaves, bark or shells into your scene.

8. Peg the animals to the middle section of the egg carton to place them in your scene. Your Animal Scene is now ready to display!

Watch Aunty Michelle’s ‘Raffia Necklace & Earrings’ video to help you with the weaving process!

1. Gather 2-3 lengths of natural raffia and 1 length of yellow raffia. Tie a knot in the ends. The natural raffia will become the core. The yellow raffia will be the weaving thread.

2. Thread the loose end of the yellow raffia through a needle. Twist a small section of the core raffia and wrap around the knot. Thread the needle through the knot, from the back. Loop the yellow raffia over the needle and core then pull the needle through so the yellow raffia is covering the core lengths.

3. Continue in this way as you twist the core and wrap around the knot to create a coil. As you make your way around the knot, thread the needle through the top of the row below.

4. Once you complete two rows of yellow, remove the needle from the strand. Trim the yellow raffia leaving a small length. Thread a length of red raffia onto the needle. Push the needle through a woven section of the yellow raffia. Pull the needle and red raffia most of the way through so the end is just sticking out from the yellow raffia.

5. Twist the yellow tail length into the core. Make two stitches over the core in the same spot to secure the red raffia. Continue weaving the red raffia using the same process, ensuring you thread the needle through the top of the row below. Make two rows of red then remove the needle from the raffia length.

6. Thread a length of black raffia onto the coil in the same way as the red raffia. Trim the red raffia strand and twist into the coil.

7. Continue weaving until you have made 1 row of black. The black border will help the red and yellow stand out!

8. Trim the core strands leaving a small tail. Weave over the tail of the core using the black raffia. Thread through a woven section to secure. Trim the excess.

9. Use pliers to attach a jump ring. You can use the needle to help loosen the raffia to create a hole to thread the jump ring through.

10. Place a shepherd hook onto the jump ring. Close the jump ring using pliers. Repeat steps 1-10 to create a second earring.

11. To create a pendant, weave in the same way. Double the number of rows used for the earring of each colour to create a larger disc. Attach a jump ring using pliers. Thread a 60cm length of coloured ribbon through the jump ring. Tie a knot in the ends.

12. Your Raffia Necklace and Earrings are now ready to wear!

Emu Collage Materials: • CleverPatch™ Cover Paper Assorted – A3 Pack of 275 – 13653

• CleverPatch™ Acrylic Paint Tube White – 75ml – 16886

• Shredded Kraft Paper – 250g Pack – 11842

• CleverPatch™ Acrylic Paint Tube Dark Green – 75ml – 16913

• Natural Raffia – Natural – 25g Pack – 18214 • Natural Raffia – Lime – 25g Pack – 18209 • Jute Twine – Thick – 140 Metres – 14275 • Wiggle Eyes Black – 1cm Pack of 100 – 10815

• CleverPatch™ Tacky Glue 250ml – 16494 • Other materials required: Scissors, sponge, pencil, a ruler and templates (page 9).

1. Choose a colour of cover paper for your background; we have used green. Apply a small amount of white paint to a sponge and dot clouds at the top of your sheet. Repeat this process with green paint at the bottom to create grass. Allow to dry.

2. Print out the templates on page 9 and cut out. Choose two colours of cover paper. Place the body piece on one colour and trace around. Place the other template pieces on the other colour and trace around. Cut out the pieces.

3. Accordian fold the leg pieces. Glue the leg pieces to the back of the body. Glue the feet to the ends of the legs. Glue the neck to the back on one side of the body. Glue a wiggle eye onto the emu’s head. Allow to dry.

4. Cut six 10cm lengths of twine then separate the strands. Cut four 15cm lengths each of natural and lime raffia. Group the raffia and tie a knot in the ends. Repeat to create a second bunch of raffia.

5. Glue the emu to the background so the emu’s feet are positioned on the painted grass. Allow to dry.

6. Glue the end of each twine piece onto the emu’s body to create its feathers. Allow to dry. Glue the raffia bundles to the grass area on the left and right of the emu. Allow to dry.

6

Many Aboriginal peoples believe emus are special. If you look in the night sky in the Eastern part of Australia you can often see an emu in the stars.

7. Gather a small amount of shredded paper and cover the knot of the raffia bundles. Glue in place and allow to dry. Your Emu Collage is now ready to display! © CleverPatch ™ 2024 - www.cleverpatch.com.au

Scaly-tailed Moving Possum & Echidna Materials:

• CleverPatch™ Cover Paper – White A4 – Pack of 250 – 16142

• CleverPatch™ Acrylic Paint Tube Burnt Sienna – 75ml – 16884

• Paper Plates – Small – Pack of 50 16601

• CleverPatch™ Acrylic Paint Tube White – 75ml – 16886

• CleverPatch™ Triangular Maxi Coloured Markers – Pack of 10 – 16523

• CleverPatch™ Acrylic Paint Tube Black – 75ml – 16885

• CleverPatch™ Coloured Pencils Pack of 12 – 20770

• Hole Punch – 18765

• Paper Fasteners – Pack of 100 – 11243

1. Print out the templates on page 10 onto cover paper. Colour in the template pieces with markers and pencils and cut out. Use a hole punch to create holes through the pieces marked with an X.

• Other materials required: Scissors, stapler, ruler, brushes and templates (page 10).

2. Cut a paper plate in half and set one half aside. Mix black and white paint together to create grey. Paint the half plate grey. To create texture, use a dry brush to dab white paint on the surface. Allow to dry.

This activity is inspired by ‘Scaly-tailed Possum and Echidna’, by Cathy Goonak and illustrated by Katrina Goonack, Marlene Goonack and Myron Goonack.

3. Place the tail, leg, arm and head pieces over the paper plate in position according to our image. Make a mark inside the holes of the template pieces onto the plate. Move the pieces away and punch holes on the marks you just made. Place the pieces back into position and secure using a paper fastener. Staple the nuts and leaves onto the possum’s front paw and tail.

4. Make a mark on the remaining plate half, 5mm up from the bottom flat edge, on the left. Make another mark 4cm from the first mark and 1cm from the bottom edge. Draw a line between the two points.

5. From the previous mark, make a 4cm curved line along the inside rim of the plate. Draw a line out towards the edge of the plate. Cut along the lines to create the snout and head of an echidna.

7. Use scissors to create the echidna’s spikes by cutting 4cm deep cuts every 5mm along the plate’s curved edge. Your Possum and Echidna are now ready to move and display!

© CleverPatch ™ 2024 - www.cleverpatch.com.au

6. Paint the echidna shape using the same grey mixture from step 2. You might like to change the tone of the grey so it is different to the possum colour. Allow to dry. Paint an eye near the snout. Allow to dry.
