A caring and ambitious new Academy for local children

01

Harris Primary Academy Coleraine Park is sponsored and managed by the Harris Federation, a charity with more than twenty years’ experience of running outstanding schools in London. It is a new school in the heart of Tottenham that is raising standards and expectations. The emphasis of the Academy is on ensuring all children leave Year 6 with the skills that are needed to be literate and numerate adults and with the personal qualities they need to succeed, now and in the future. In work and in play, Harris primary students are encouraged towards traditional values: good manners and behaviour, enthusiasm for learning, and recognising right from wrong. Children are rewarded for ability and effort and taught to always reach for their ‘personal best’ academically and in the way they relate to others. Creativity, fun and self-expression are also important aspects of Academy life. There are all sorts of activities for children to try their hand at, including clubs, societies and trips to all sorts of interesting places and events. We hope that you find this prospectus helpful and that you are as excited as we are about all of the opportunities that this Academy provides. Sir Daniel Moynihan Ed.D, M.A., B.Sc. (Econ) Chief Executive of the Harris Federation

The aim of our Academy is to give every student coming through our doors an outstanding education they enjoy, which prepares them for academic success and happy lives. Our Academy is an exciting place to learn and our students work hard and behave well. We are very proud that our children are so friendly, polite and enthusiastic. It is important to us that they enjoy the opportunities on offer here and that they are given the support they need to thrive. I very much hope you will consider Harris Primary Academy Coleraine Park as the place to start your child’s education and look forward to meeting you at our Open Events. Applying for a Place We have 60 Reception places each year. As with all schools, Looked After and former Looked After Children and those with a statement of Special Education Need that names Harris Primary Academy Coleraine Park are given first priority. Children who live closest to the Academy and those who already have older brothers or sisters here are prioritised next for places. To apply for a place, you will need to name the Academy on Haringey Council’s Common Application Form. If you do not live in Haringey, you should name the Academy on the Common Application Form of the borough in which you live.

Preparing our Students for Academic Success and Happy Lives As an Academy, we have very high expectations of the children who come here, academically and socially. We support every individual child to achieve their ‘personal best’, whatever their background or starting point. Our students are taught to respect each other and their teachers, to recognise right from wrong and to value their education. They know that good behaviour is expected of them and are frequently praised and

rewarded for making a good effort and for being kind, helpful, hard-working and well-behaved. The result of this is a calm, safe, orderly and purposeful Academy with children who have the social skills and confidence they need to thrive, now and in the future.

Introducing Children to a World of Learning Learning is hands-on and practical and our curriculum focuses on ensuring children at the Academy become confident readers, writers and mathematicians in the earliest years of their education. We have almost 400 lively young minds at Harris Primary Academy Coleraine Park. We help them understand what they can achieve now and what they need to do to become even better. Teachers also know exactly where their students are in terms of achievement and have stretching targets for them.

We keep a close eye on every individual child and, whenever somebody needs extra support, we plan work for them in small groups or on a one-to-one basis to give them the additional tuition they require.

Becoming Confident Readers and Writers The specialism at our Academy is Literacy. We chose this as our specialism because we believe that learning to read, write and communicate effectively is extremely important. All of our students have a reading lesson in addition to their literacy lesson each day and there are plenty of other opportunities to practice reading out loud with their teachers. Our aim is to make sure that the children at our Academy can read fluently by the time they leave Year 2. Reading is taught through traditional phonics and students are encouraged to read for pleasure and to take home books from our well-stocked library. We also teach our students to become effective communicators, working with them on their speaking skills so that they can express themselves with clarity and confidence.

A Well Rounded Curriculum There are daily lessons in maths, reading and literacy for children of all ages. As they progress from Reception through the Academy, the curriculum and teaching styles evolve in order to arouse the natural curiosity that all children have. Children learn science, history, geography, RE, PE, art, design technology, drama, dance and music. They study Personal, Social and Citizenship education and Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) and begin learning a modern foreign language in Year 3. Creativity, fun and self-expression are important aspects of Academy life and, across every subject, we make sure there is time and space for children to develop their imaginations and thinking skills.

Parents who are involved in their Children’s Education We believe in keeping parents well informed about their children’s education, with reports sent home every six weeks. Parents are regularly invited to the Academy on a more informal basis too, for example for special performances and events, so that they can get to know each other and their children’s teachers.

A Head Start for Secondary School Our aim is to prepare students as fully as possible for their secondary education so that they are ready to hit the ground running when they change school at age 11. Wherever possible in Years 5 and 6, we bring in subject specialists to enhance children’s learning. As well as engaging students in the excitement of the subject at hand, this prepares them for a smooth progression to secondary school where all of their lessons will be taught by subject specialists. For the most academically able students, we also begin introducing elements of the secondary curriculum early, ensuring they are fully stretched and stimulated.

06

Outside the Classroom Our broad and balanced curriculum is complemented by a fun and vibrant range of extracurricular clubs which take place at lunch time and after school. We always seek to discover and nurture special talents within each child. There is something for everyone in our extracurricular programme which is packed full of music clubs, dance clubs, drama clubs, writing clubs and sports activities. During the school year, there are also plenty of fully-funded outings to a wide variety of attractions which relate to the topics students are learning in the classroom.

Wrap Around Care

Strong Governance

We provide a Breakfast Club and a privately run After School Club and Holiday Club for all children whose parents require it. Children can be dropped at the Breakfast Club from 8am and can be picked up from the After School Club at 6pm. The clubs are well organised and fun.

We are accountable to an Academy Governing Body (AGB).

Healthy and Tasty Meals Our school lunches are healthy and nutritious as well as tasty. Students may bring in packed lunches if they prefer.

The AGB is an independent body and is responsible, with the Principal, for setting and monitoring the educational direction of the Academy and the targets to be achieved over time. The AGB includes representation from the teaching and non-teaching staff, parents and the community. The AGB is Chaired by Mrs Susan Head, who is a highly experienced and respected Primary School leader. To contact our Chair of Governors, please contact her via the Academy – the address is at the back of this prospectus.

The Harris Track Record Our Academy is run by the Harris Federation, a charity with more than twenty years’ experience of education in London.

The Harris Federation has built its reputation on a family of Academies that, across the board, are setting standards of excellence and fulfilling high expectations.

The Harris track record

Of the 11 Harris Academies so far to have been inspected by Ofsted, nine have been rated as ‘Outstanding’ – this record is unmatched by any other education body in the country. There are currently 19 Harris Academies. All of them are located in and around London.

I created the Harris Federation because I know the value of a good education. It is the best start in life that you can give to a child. With Sir Dan Moynihan and his exceptional team of Principals in charge, our Academies have shown that there is no reason why inner-city schools cannot be outstanding and that there are no children in London who cannot achieve when given the right education. London’s parents, citizens, entrepreneurs and professionals of tomorrow are being educated at Harris Academies and we are nurturing them so that their adult lives are happy, fulfilling and successful.
