Equality and Diversity

We celebrate and promote the diversity of our community.

We recognise that some members of our community may require additional help and encouragement in order to gain the most from their educational experience.

This support is provided by our dedicated Support Tutor team who are committed to providing a high-quality experience to all our learners.

Each member of our college community can expect to be valued as an individual. This approach ensures that all students can reach their full potential, regardless of their circumstances.

"

Holy Cross, founded by the Daughters of the Cross in 1878, is a Catholic Sixth Form College and University Centre, which exists to provide a high-quality education within a community based on Gospel values.

We provide the opportunity for each person to develop spiritually, morally, and intellectually, and we welcome students and staff of all faiths and those of none.

Widening Participation

Our aim is to promote and provide the opportunity to successfully participate in Higher Education to everyone who can benefit from it.

This is vital for social mobility and economic competitiveness, and it is also integral to our ethos.

As a provider of Higher Education for a diverse student body, Holy Cross University Centre - with its partners Liverpool Hope and Edge Hill universities - has an outstanding track record in widening participation.

We welcome:

• Mature students

• Students who are the first in their family/generation to attend Higher Education

• Students from low-income backgrounds

• Students from areas where participation in Higher Education is low

We aim to make a significant and distinctive contribution to widening participation through:

• A co-ordinated strategy of advice and guidance

• Targeted support and provision of entry routes

We do this to help those returning to education or those coming from alternative routes into Higher Education.

When Liverpool Hope University - and later Edge Hill - formed partnerships with Holy Cross College, the shared vision was for Holy Cross University Centre to become a centre of excellence, providing locally based education with award-winning national universities.

We are incredibly proud to say that the past 26 years have been a phenomenal success that has transformed the lives of hundreds of students from Bury and beyond.

At Holy Cross University Centre, you can study with Liverpool Hope and Edge Hill Universities on a range of part-time and full-time undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

We specialise in courses that are relevant to the needs of Greater Manchester and offer pathways into public sector careers, the caring professions or indeed further study.

This degree lets you explore many issues and debates in the field. You’ll look at factors that affect health and social care, focusing on social issues and experiences.

This degree is perfect for those interested in improving the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities.

Throughout the programme, students consider key questions like:

• What factors influence health and well-being?

• Why do different social groups experience health differently?

• How can we address health inequalities?

• How does policy impact health and social care?

• How can we work with communities to promote well-being?

• How do we safeguard vulnerable groups?

Studying this degree helps you gain a solid understanding of Health and Social Care policy, theory, and practice. You’ll develop practical skills alongside academic knowledge.

Graduates leave with a deep understanding of the root causes of social inequalities that lead to health care needs. They are driven to create services sensitive to these needs.

Early Childhood

This degree builds advanced knowledge about young children. This course covers child development, interactions, and the effects of local and global inequalities. It prepares you to advocate for young children’s needs and rights.

The course is taught by academics from Sociology, Education, Philosophy, and Psychology

They are active researchers who publish widely and attend national and international conferences. Their expertise creates a challenging, research-informed setting

If you want to understand how and why we learn – both in the UK and worldwide – this is the course for you. You’ll gain a fresh perspective on education.

You’ll also grow personally, reflecting on your values and priorities. This will help you make key decisions in your career.

Our degree brings education to life, tackling questions like: “Can education overcome inequality?” and “How will technology change learning and teaching?”

We look deeper, uncovering the hidden mechanics that influence how education functions. By drawing on theories from Psychology, Sociology, History, Economics, and Philosophy, we show how the world works

This gives you the tools to make a difference in society.

This degree is a strong foundation for those who want to train as teachers or pursue other education-related careers.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

This course will help you advocate for disability rights and equality in your career.

Over 16 million disabled people live in the UK. Graduates skilled in SEN and disability are in demand. They are needed in education, health, social work, and business.

This degree values the contributions of disabled people and encourages you to focus on knowledge instead of just needs

A supportive team of both disabled and non-disabled academics will help you gain skills, knowledge, and confidence to lead in this field.

You will learn about the historical, social, and cultural factors that shape our views on SEN and disability. Activities will enhance your grasp of academic theories.

Liverpool Hope’s Special Educational Needs course is unique as it’s led by the Centre for Culture and Disability Studies.

This centre is an internationally recognised leader in disability studies research and the only UK research centre focused on disability and culture.

Criminology (Coming soon)

Crime and society’s response are key issues today. Criminology looks at why crime happens, its effects, and how we can prevent it.

On this course you’ll explore how crime is defined. You’ll learn who makes these decisions and why people commit crimes. You’ll also study what happens in the criminal justice system.

You’ll also learn about important institutions like the police, courts, prisons, probation services, and government bodies such as the Ministry of Justice and the Home Office.

The degree prompts you to think about big questions, such as:

• Is criminal behaviour learned or inherited?

• Why are some actions criminalized and others not?

Our Partner Universities

Liverpool Hope has been partnered with Holy Cross since 1999.

Formed through the merger of three Liverpool Higher Education Institutions – St Katherine’s, Notre Dame and Christ’s College – its roots go back to the founding of St Katherine’s in 1844.

Liverpool Hope welcomes ‘all who seek a sound higher education. It is deeply committed to a culture of research and scholarship, and to preparing its graduates to serve the common good’.

The university ‘aspires to be a welcoming, hospitable and caring community’ and has an ‘ethos of hard work, scholarly dedication and the rounded formation of its graduates’.

As such, Liverpool Hope’s mission and values align perfectly with those of Holy Cross.

Liverpool Hope’s excellence is recognised in several national league tables.

In the 2025 National Student Survey (NSS) it was ranked First in the North West for:

• Teaching on my course

• Learning opportunities

• Assessment and feedback

• Academic support

• Student voice

• Student union representation of academic interests

• Communication about mental wellbeing support services

• Freedom of expression

Liverpool Hope was also ranked:

• Second in the UK for Academic support

• Second in the UK for Freedom of expression

• Third in the UK for Assessment and Feedback

Liverpool Hope is ranked First in the North West and 10th in the UK for Student Satisfaction in the Complete University Guide 2026.

In the Guardian University Guide 2024, it is ranked First in the North West for Education.

Edge Hill has also enjoyed a long-standing partnership with Holy Cross.

It opened in Liverpool in 1885 as the first nondenominational teacher training college for women.

From its origins as a specialist institution with 41 female trainee teachers, Edge Hill now has almost 10,000 fulltime students, another 3,000 part-time students on a wide range of undergraduate programmes, and almost 5,000 full and part-time postgraduate students.

Edge Hill’s mission is:

‘To explore the difference knowledge can make in inspiring minds and shaping a better future for our graduates and the lives of others.

‘We set out to deliver teaching of the highest standard, informed by research of true international standing, set in an intellectually stimulating, ideas-focused and inclusive environment.

‘From our community to the global community, we will ensure education has a wider reach and a genuinely transformative effect, changing lives and opening the door to greater possibilities for all’.

Again, this aligns perfectly with the mission and values of Holy Cross.

Like Liverpool Hope, Edge Hill’s achievements have also been recognised nationally.

It is ranked by Ofsted as an outstanding provider of Initial Teacher Education.

As a university, it is ranked:

• Fifth in the UK by Uni Compare 2026

Support for Learning

From the first point of contact right through to graduation and beyond, the Holy Cross University Centre team will support you every step of the way.

Support Tutors

Every student is allocated a Higher Education Support Tutor, who is your first point of contact for any queries you may have.

Our Support Tutors are renowned for providing a high level of personalised and individual student support.

We understand that you may have been out of formal education for a while and that you may need to rebuild your academic skills and confidence.

We will guide and encourage you every step of the way, helping you to balance your commitments, to develop intellectually and to move on to those next steps in your career.

As postgraduates and trained teachers, with many years of experience in higher education, our Support Tutors are the ideal people to help you meet the challenges and embrace the rewards of graduate and postgraduate study.

You will have a minimum of two scheduled one-to-one meetings each year with your Support Tutor, with more meetings as and when you need them.

Study skills

We offer study skills sessions to new students before they start their chosen degree at Holy Cross, as well as ongoing study skills support as you progress through your course.

The pre-course sessions are particularly popular, providing a much-needed confidence boost for people who might have been out of education for some time.

Students with additional needs

As part of our commitment to providing a fully inclusive learning environment, we actively encourage applicants to disclose any additional needs early in the admissions process, at initial advice appointments and on the UCAS application.

If potential students require admissions information to be presented in a different format, they can contact the University Centre in advance.

If any applicants indicate a disability or additional support requirement, they will be given information about Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs) and will also be asked permission for referral for further advice to the appropriate university.

If you think you have a learning difficulty that has not been identified yet, our Support Tutors will help to guide you through the process to identify your individual needs and any potential barriers to your learning, ensuring that the appropriate help is available to you.

Course fees and funding

Tuition fee loans

Studying may prove to be a more affordable option than you think.

Students can obtain financial help with paying their tuition fees. Student loans are available to cover the cost of tuition fees for up to four years of study.

Applying for tuition fee loans

Tuition Fee loans are provided by Student Finance England (SFE) and applications for loans are made by students direct to SFE.

Tuition fee loans are paid directly to the University when students have officially enrolled on their chosen course.

Repayment of fees

If you get a loan to cover your tuition fees, you do not have to pay anything back until you start earning above the threshold.

Information on eligibility for funding and the funding application process can be found by searching Student Finance England

Maintenance loans and additional support

New full-time students can apply for means-tested maintenance loans if they are living at home or studying away from home.

Full time students who have young children, or who have adults who depend on them, can apply for grants to help pay towards extra costs.

Full-time and part-time students with disabilities and additional learning needs can apply for funding of resources and support via the Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA)

Your Support Tutor is available to help with any queries about funding:

“They were so supportive and went through the whole enrolment process with me – I was able to ask lots of questions, giving me peace of mind that this was the right fit for me”

Waterfall-Hallam, 2013 graduate

“Initially she helped me with the application and the financial side of things, but I would also have one-to-ones every so often to make sure I was ok, on task, and if I needed any extra support”

Charlotte Weldon

HLTA and Forest School Leader

Degree course studied at Holy Cross University Centre (HCUC):

BA Hons in Education and Special Educational Needs

Partner university: Liverpool Hope University 2022-2025 (Graduation in May)

Why did you study at HCUC?

I wanted to fit study around working. I already had a job, and had outgoings including a mortgage, so the flexibility allowed me to keep that income coming in and gain a degree at the same time.

So many elements of the degree course supported and enhanced my career as I progressed through different roles.

I’m now working at St Mary’s Primary School in Burnley as a HLTA (Higher Level Teaching Assistant) and Forest School Leader.

They didn’t interview anyone else for the position –my certificates and qualifications impressed them enough to offer me the role.

“Bite the bullet. The battle with yourself is bigger than taking on a new challenge. Good things happen when you take a chance. I’m bringing in a bigger income now because of my qualification.”

“Getting into teaching has always been the end goal –I’ve worked my way up from the bottom and I know I’m so close to achieving this.”

I’m now on the HLTA pay scale so I’m bringing in a bigger income because of my qualification.

Getting into teaching has always been the end goal –I’ve worked my way up from the bottom and I know I’m so close to achieving this goal.

How did you juggle being pregnant while studying?

I was pregnant throughout my second year (with baby Betsy) and I would not have got through it without Louise (Green, Support Tutor).

She was one of the first people I sent pictures to when Betsy arrived in the October of my final year – she turned into a real friend, not just a Support Tutor.

She always went above and beyond, and I’m also incredibly grateful to my parents and partner for being a massive support at this time.

What would you say to someone thinking about joining HCUC?

Three people are studying at Holy Cross University Centre because of me.

I told them that they can do it. When you’re going into higher education and you’re not a typical university age, you might be thinking you’ll feel out of place. But it’s absolutely nothing like that. It’s nothing like you might think it is.

Bite the bullet. The battle with yourself is bigger than taking on a new challenge. Good things happen when you take a chance

How to apply

Initial Advice appointments

When we receive your course enquiry (scan the QR code below to do this) we will invite you in for an informal discussion – an Initial Advice appointment – which will take place with one of our experienced Support Tutors.

You will receive all the information you need regarding studying at Holy Cross University Centre, how to apply, course fees and available funding.

Support Tutors will also look at your existing qualifications, discuss entry requirements for your chosen course, and advise on a suitable alternative pathway if relevant.

Full-time courses

For full-time courses, applications are usually made online through UCAS (University and College Admissions Service) which forwards your application to the University associated with your course.

Support Tutors will advise you on how to make an application via UCAS.

Part-time courses

For our part-time courses, your Support Tutor will advise on the best way to apply.

Entry requirements

We understand that many of our applicants have nontraditional qualifications and they may have other skills that are transferable to degree level study.

We actively seek and welcome applicants with a variety of qualifications and experience.

For these reasons, it’s important that all potential applicants come for an Initial Advice appointment at Holy Cross University Centre, so we can spend time discussing specific circumstances and course entry requirements in more detail.

Enquire now – our friendly team will get back to you at a time that’s right for you

CASE STUDY

“They know you’ve got work, you’ve got families. This is just a part of what you are doing with your life –it’s a very important part, but it is just part of your life. I really got the feeling this was where I needed to be.”

Clare Waterfall-Hallam

Company Director at Bigtank Productions

Degree course studied at Holy Cross University Centre (HCUC): Multimedia Technology

Partner university:

Leeds Metropolitan (now Leeds Beckett) –Graduated in 2013

Why did you choose to study here?

At the time when I chose the course, I was working in television full-time in Manchester and I needed something that I was able to study one evening a week

Tell us about your Support Tutor (based at HCUC)

They were so supportive and went through the enrolment process with me. I was able to ask lots of questions, giving me peace of mind that this was the right fit for me, it also gave me a feeling of this was where I need to be.

What really helped was their awareness that you’ve got work, you’ve got families. This is just a part of what you are doing with your life – it’s a very important part, but it is just part of your life

What would you say to someone thinking about joining HCUC?

For me, it was the sense of pride that I got from doing a degree, but then doing it really well, while all these other things are going on (Clare was pregnant during her studies and graduation) and having the support from the University Centre.

It’s empowering and something I’m incredibly proud of.

“I graduated with a 2:1 while raising three children. It gave me so much confidence and pride in myself. It was the best decision I ever made.”

“Holy Cross gave me the space and encouragement to grow, both personally and professionally. I’m proud to say I’ve achieved my dream of becoming a teacher.”
