t is my honor to introduce this Winter 2019-2020 issue of UpNext, which serves as a bridge between our 150th anniversary year of 2019 and our focus on civic engagement in 2020. In fact, Cleveland Public Library’s yearlong theme for this coming year is Democracy 2020.

What does Democracy 2020 mean, and why are we dedicating a year to this theme? In short, Democracy 2020 speaks to our role as a public library in encouraging thoughtful, informed civic engagement. This year, we strive to help our patrons prepare for and participate in major events such as the 2020 Census and the U.S. presidential election. Throughout the year, programming focusing on the census and election will help educate the public while fostering deeper discussions surrounding what it means to vote, to be counted, and to participate in an active democratic system.

Civic engagement and awareness will be integrated throughout our coming year of programs and events. On January 20, 2020, our 35th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. commemorative program will honor not only the legacy of Dr. King, but also 150 members of the public who have contributed positively to their communities through charity work, community engagement, neighborhood beautification, youth outreach, sustainability initiatives, or simply by being dedicated citizens who consistently spread goodwill. Recognizing this group of everyday

Clevelanders is our way of celebrating how we can all work to improve our neighborhoods and city at large.

The articles and programs in this issue of UpNext also highlight our theme of Democracy 2020. Browse these pages to find book clubs, eSports events, children’s programming, open mics, technology education, and other programs that bring people together and help form cohesive communities.

Speaking of community, an update about the Library’s Facilities Master Plan on page 6 provides a glimpse of the large-scale changes we’ll be making to all our branches in the coming decade. This process will ensure our neighborhood libraries are transformed into innovative, aesthetically pleasing spaces that best serve those who matter most: our patrons.

On page 4-5, we share photographs from our special Cleveland 20/20 project, which is spearheaded by the Cleveland Print Room. Through the work of a diverse range of local photographers, this project helps document our city, its people, and its neighborhoods to present a holistic look at Cleveland in 2019. These pages also offer two excerpts from the CPL150 Storytelling Project, an ideastream project that captures Clevelanders’ stories in their own words.

Both of these community projects give a boots-on-the-ground look at the people and places that make up the communities that surround us.

The latest event in our esteemed Writers & Readers series will center a conversation on race, racism, and bias with the acclaimed authors Robin DiAngelo and Jennifer Eberhardt. Their books—White Fragility and Biased, respectively— illuminate how race and bias impact our lives while providing avenues to help us talk to one another about these issues. This discussion is sure to engage our audience in conversation surrounding timely and culturally relevant topics—which is, of course, at the heart of civic engagement.

Finally, this issue includes a profile on one of our young patrons: Joswen Colon, a teenager who uses South Branch’s sound booth to learn how to play the guitar and piano. Joswen is perhaps the best example we have of our contributions to the democratic process: providing a curious young person with the tools and education to learn, grow, and find his place in the larger world.

I hope you enjoy this issue of UpNext as we embark on a new year full of promise, civic engagement, and strengthened community connections.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC

Teen Joswen Colon uses South Branch’s sound booth to learn new instruments, produce music, and make his parents proud.

W

hen Joswen Colon began visiting South Branch last year, he was looking for a place to spend time with friends and maybe play some video games. What he found, however, amounted to so much more. Before long, he was using professional recording software, learning to play two instruments, developing leadership skills, and forging new paths for the future. It all started with a love of music—and with Cleveland Public Library.

“I like coming here because I like music and hanging out with friends,” Joswen explains. “The Library is one of my favorite places. I don’t write music, but I’ll play and then remember the notes. It’s fun, and I’m proud of myself because I make the music sometimes.”

Joswen’s initiative caught the attention of Joel Lefkowitz, Library Assistant-Youth Emphasis at South Branch. Known as “Mr. J.” to the kids and teens, Joel manages the branch’s sound booth and teaches the orientation class all patrons must enroll in before using the equipment and instruments. While he helped Joswen learn to use the recording software and start learning guitar, he can’t take credit for Joswen’s talents on the keyboard.

“Joswen just started playing the piano on his own. He taught himself,” Joel says. “One day I saw him watching YouTube [instructional videos], and then he was playing along to a variety of pop songs. He plays Beethoven, too. I didn’t push him—he did this all on his own.”

Joswen’s musical education at the Library includes participating in a Tri-C Vocal Arts Academy program and, more recently, taking 2

guitar lessons offered by the Cleveland Classical Guitar Society.

He’s also developing additional valuable skills. As the person in his friend group with the most experience with the sound booth, Joswen has taken on a leadership role, helping his friends play and create music.

This love of music seems to run in the family. Joswen’s younger sister, Jazmine, enjoys playing the ukulele and writing her own music. Just as Joswen is drawn to both to the latest pop hits and classical composers like Beethoven, Jazmine’s musical tastes also run deep. When she first told Joel what songs she’d like to learn, for example, one of her answers surprised him: “Fly Me to the Moon” by Frank Sinatra.

“I laughed,” Joel recalls. “That was not what I was expecting.”

Proud Parents

Joswen was 13 when he started visiting South Branch in late 2018 following his family’s move to the neighborhood from Parma.

Their timing was perfect, considering the newly preserved, renovated, and expanded branch reopened in November 2018. As a Carnegie library building that first opened in 1911, the preserved South Branch retains a sense of its history and original architecture while also offering modern amenities, including the sound booth.

All this adds up to a perfect place for teens like Joswen and Jazmine to visit during afterschool hours.

“We’re super proud they’re finding positive choices in the world to take,” says Wendie, Joswen and Jazmine’s mother. “Paying for private lessons isn’t something we could do, so this is an awesome

service the Library is providing. The Library is a true gem to the community. It’s just essential that we have access to that information and programs.”

Joswen’s father, José, echoes Wendie’s gratitude for the Library. He’s recently learned to use Cleveland Public Library to access computers or search for a job. Most of all, he’s pleased the Library can help enrich the lives of his children while fostering a love of music. As a singer and someone who maintains a deep appreciation for many kinds of music, José is especially glad to see his kids express an interest in this area.

“I want to encourage them to do different things, like singing, music, sports, and talking to the different people they might meet at the Library,” José says. “I want them to have many opportunities.”

Gaining Skills for the Future

South Branch’s sound booth includes guitars (bass, acoustic, and electric), a ukulele, an electronic drum set, a keyboard, a microphone, and Pro Tools, professional-grade sound recording and production software. Giving kids and teens access to this equipment helps the Library create communities of learning.

According to Joel, a young patron who takes the sound booth orientation class can then help teach the next person who wants to learn, who can then teach the next person, and so on.

Using the sound booth also helps kids learn important lessons surrounding collaboration and responsible use of equipment.

Joel, who earned an associate’s degree in Recording Arts and Technology at Tri-C and a bachelor’s in Digital Media from Cleveland State University, particularly enjoys watching young patrons develop new skills, explore potential career paths, and become more responsible and disciplined.

“At first, kids go into the south booth and think it’s going to be instant success and sound like it does on the radio,” he observes.

“They have to learn how it works and get permission to be there.

They have to show up on time, they have to work hard and not get distracted, and they need to make the most of the time while they have it.”

As an eighth grader, Joswen is mostly living in the moment and experimenting with making music, but his experiences in the sound booth just might influence his future. He’s expressed interest in studying musical or digital arts in school one day, and it’s even possible that the Library might play another role in his life in the coming years—that of an employer.

“I think I’d like to have a job at the Library,” Joswen says.

It is, after all, one of his favorite places in the world.

The sound booth at South Branch is open to youth ages 13 and up and adults with a valid Cleveland Public Library card. Patrons must take an hour-long orientation class, which is held from 4:30–5:30pm on the last Wednesday of the month (or by appointment if necessary). After orientation, patrons can reserve up to two 2-hour sessions in the sound booth a week; additional walk-in time may be permitted if the space is not in use. SHARING CLEVELAND′S STORY THROUGH WORDS AND IMAGES Two ongoing community projects—one focusing on storytelling, the other on photography—help capture and celebrate Cleveland’s past, present, and future.

n honor of Cleveland Public Library’s 150 th anniversary year, Library staff, community partners, patrons, and Cleveland residents alike are stepping up to help document Cleveland in 2019. Throughout the year, snapshots of present-day Cleveland— not to mention hints of the city’s history and even its future—have been captured through special photography and storytelling projects.

First, the Cleveland Print Room has partnered with the Library to spearhead Cleveland 20/20: A Photographic Exploration of Cleveland, a community photography project that tasked local photographers with documenting Cleveland’s people and places. A diverse range of local photographers, as well as teen photographers, snapped photos throughout the city to ensure Cleveland was documented like never before.

Shari Wilkins, Executive Director of the Cleveland Print Room, explained in the project’s early days that its focus surrounds “the 4

neighborhoods, the community, and the residents.” At its heart, she added, the project “will be entrenched in the community.”

Clevelanders will have several opportunities to view the project’s photos. Some photographs appear online; a curated selection of images produced for Cleveland 20/20 will be displayed in a special exhibit in the Library’s Brett Hall in 2020; and all photographs will also be added to the Library’s Photograph Collection.

The Art of Storytelling

Next, a partnership with ideastream helps bring Clevelanders’ stories and memories to life through the CPL150 Storytelling Project.

Library staff members specially trained to conduct interviews gathered a collection of audio conversations with patrons and residents. From that initial pool of interviews, ideastream selects stories to produce for radio, video, and the web.

As of this writing, ideastream has produced four stories as part of the project. One features 92-year-old Bud Koscinski of Newburgh Heights; another takes the form of a conversation between Silk Allen and her teenage son, Caillou Allen; one features font collector and amateur typographer Robert Donona; and the latest story explores teacher Ted Carter's mission to break down barriers for students. These stories can be accessed at ideastream.org/stories-from-cleveland. To round out the project, ideastream will produce three more stories by the Library’s Martin Luther King, Jr. commemorative ceremony on January 20, 2020.

For now, enjoy a snippet from each project right here in these pages. The photographs accompanying this article are from Cleveland 20/20, and excerpts from two initial interviews conducted as part of the CPL150 Storytelling Project can be found below.

A Canopy of Elms

I’m a lifelong resident of Glenville. Growing up in Cleveland, I had a unique experience because we lived on Wade Park, which was originally a very exclusive, all-white neighborhood.

The first black person to move in the neighborhood, Dr. Charles Garvin, would become our next-door neighbor. He served on the Cleveland Public Library board, he was a doctor at Cleveland Clinic, he was on the board at Howard University, and he was one of the people who started the Quincy Savings and Loan and Dunbar Life Insurance because he believed in black economic solidarity, and because banks would not loan black people money to buy houses.

My main memory of growing up on Wade Park is that the street had a canopy of elm trees that met across the street, so you were under this beautiful green lace canopy. I’d lie on my back in the car and knew we were almost home when I saw that lace canopy. It was so beautiful, but then of course the Dutch elm epidemic killed most of the elms in Cleveland. We had a big beautiful backyard with a cherry tree and an apple tree and swings and a seesaw and a jungle gym. We had the best backyard in the neighborhood. My dad used to show movies in the summer in the backyard on a big canvas. We spent a lot of time in that backyard. It was wonderful.

Running Away to Cleveland

I’m originally from Erie, PA. I was a runaway. I ran away here to live with my aunt when I turned 18. She lived in Parma on Snow Road. It was just me and my two cousins, and we were a handful of black people in this white school. Erie is small, and Cleveland is huge. I was like a kid in the candy store, riding the Rapid, trying the different kinds of food, the beaches for swimming, the reservations and hiking trails—I’m a nature buff, I’ll go outside all day.

I honestly did not finish high school. I dropped out in eleventh grade. But I’m working on getting my GED. I would love to go to college, but with my children, I think I’ll do an online program. I’m just weighing my options and am honestly proud I’m getting my GED. I love writing, and I’m trying to write a book right now.

I’ve lived in the Garden Valley community for 9 years. It’s a community. This library [Garden Valley Branch] is like a family.

They know everyone, they know the children, they’ve watched my children grow up. I respect them. This library is a safe house, a safe spot. I’m a single mother of five children, and I’m taking care of them by myself. Coming to the library is our recreation.

REIMAGINING OUR LIBRARIES OF TOMORROW

Through the Facilities Master Plan, Cleveland Public Library reveals how its branch libraries will be transformed over the next decade.

hen Cleveland Public Library opened its doors in 1869, the first patrons surely couldn’t imagine how library services would change over the next 150 years. Similarly, if we try today to envision our world 150 years into the future, we couldn’t possibly anticipate all the complex ways libraries might evolve. What we can do is prepare for the future by revitalizing and reimagining our branch libraries, which provide vital materials, services, programs, and experiences to Clevelanders throughout the city.

During a special State of the Library address last February held in honor of the Library’s 150 th anniversary, Executive Director and CEO Felton Thomas, Jr., revealed that all neighborhood branches will be transformed through an extensive ten-year project.

“We must look to our future and start our course for the next 150 years,” Thomas said. “Aesthetically, we will change the experience and the environment in every one of our branches. We make that commitment to ensure that Cleveland has some of the best libraries in the country—if not the best libraries in the country.”

This commitment to improve all branch libraries was cemented when Cleveland residents voted in favor of the tax levy in 2017. Initial research and planning, however, began in earnest years earlier when the Library, in conjunction with Kent State University’s Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative (CUDC), held community meetings to determine what patrons most need from neighborhood libraries and how those facilities could be improved.

Now, with the support of the public and the tax levy, the Library is moving forward to make large-scale, system-wide changes to ensure Clevelanders have the libraries they need for the next 150 years and beyond.

“To embark on this ten-year plan now, during the Library’s 150 th anniversary, is significant,” says Jeremiah Swetel, Chief Operations Officer. “We want to use this moment in our long history as a springboard for what the 21st century library can be.”

Facilities Master Plan

To turn this ambitious goal into reality, the Library’s Facilities Master Plan outlines recommendations for how all branch libraries will be improved, updated, and reimagined to better service their communities in the years to come. Based on these recommendations, some branch libraries will be renovated and expanded while others will be entirely rebuilt. In all cases, the Facilities Master Plan focuses on meeting emerging service patterns and usage needs while emphasizing forward-thinking design to create functional, efficient, and beautiful library spaces.

While designs will vary from branch to branch, in general, patrons can expect increased access to technology, quiet study rooms, flexible common areas, and additional meeting rooms.

The public can turn to South Branch, one of the Library’s historic Carnegie buildings, for an example of the scope of changes other branches may undergo. South Branch, which first opened in 1911, underwent a major renovation and preservation process in recent years. The branch reopened in December 2018 to boast a new addition and modern amenities along with preserved historic features, such as the building’s stone façade and interior woodwork. Jamie Declet, Manager of South Branch, called the renovated building “a nearly 110-year-old-library that has all the amenities of a 21st century library.”

While every branch’s renovations will be personalized to the particular building’s needs, Swetel created a set of design principles that will be applied to all. First, the building interior spaces will be reorganized around a central gathering area; rebalanced to focus strongly on people as well as collections; and reconfigured in terms of furniture and fixtures to allow for future change and adjustment of the space. Meanwhile, barriers between people, knowledge, and resources will be removed while the library buildings are revealed to the greater community by being placed in prominent, visual locations. Finally, the historic character of the library buildings will be retained in order to preserve the story of the city and neighborhood across generations.

Components for Success

Cleveland Public Library is approaching this process holistically and with care to ensure branch libraries reflect their communities and can best serve the public moving forward. Key parts of this project include: Community. Honoring the specific communities these libraries serve is the heart of this initiative. As each branch undergoes its own planning process, a special steering committee will help guide the particular vision for the project. Steering committees will be made up local residents and patrons—the people who will actually use the library branch in the years to come.

Safety. The safety of patrons and staff is always a top priority, and Swetel explains that safety will be engineered into the design of the renovated or rebuilt libraries.

Creating low, visible sight lines throughout the branch, providing easily accessible exits in the event of an emergency, and making the space open and transparent can all play a role in making the neighborhood libraries safer and more welcoming.

History. While many exciting developments are on the horizon in terms of new buildings, additions, and modern amenities, the Library can’t overlook its 150-year history. Just as some of South Branch’s beloved historic features were preserved, the Library intends to preserve meaningful parts of these branch’s pasts and honor the culture and histories of the local communities they serve.

Diversity. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are crucial parts of this process and are given serious consideration every step of the way. To that end, the Library has assembled diversity committees consisting of both internal and external stakeholders to ensure the Facilities Master Plan creates pathways for diversity in the design, engineering, and construction of library spaces. That means diversity and equity are taken into account at every level—from selecting architects to the design of the space and beyond.

“Cleveland Public Library made a commitment to serve a diverse community, and to do so, we need to mirror the people who live here,” says Dr. Sadie Winlock, Chief Equity, Education, and Engagement Officer. “As we prepare to invest the taxpayers’ money into our branch libraries, we need to be as inclusive, as diverse, and as equitable as possible. Throughout this process, that’s what we did.”

Looking to the Future

Libraries have evolved rapidly in recent decades, from the materials they contain to the programs and services they offer, but not everything has changed. Public libraries continue to stand as centers for learning and growth, where community members can access books, computers, childhood literacy programs, employment assistance, tutoring, arts programming, and so much more. Most of all, the physical space of a library provides a free, accessible, inclusive place where people can engage with one another. Through this Facilities Master Plan, Cleveland Public Library pledges to improve and transform each of its branch libraries—and help build a better, stronger, and more connected community in the process.

“The investment and the commitment we’re making for each of these branch libraries will be transformative for the communities they’re located in,” says Swetel.

“The nature of what we’re doing transcends the changes we’ll make internally with the space—it’s about how the community will drive and influence the design, and how Clevelanders will be better served in the process.”

The Facilities Master Plan: Fast Facts Who: This ambitious, large-scale project has the power to positively impact all Clevelanders who make use of library materials, programs, or services.

What: Cleveland Public Library’s neighborhood branches will be renovated or rebuilt to create functional, aesthetically pleasing 21st century libraries.

Where: All Cleveland Public Library branch locations throughout the city (excluding Main Library and the Public Administration Library).

When: The 13 branches in the first phase of the Facilities Master Plan are projected to be completed in 2024, while the entire project is tentatively expected to be complete in about a decade.

Why: To give Clevelanders the libraries they need and deserve today and into the future.

How: Based on the system-wide scope of the Facilities Master Plan, the project will be broken into phases. The first five branches to undergo renovations include Hough, Jefferson, Walz, West Park, and Woodland.

Writers&Readers The Books that Shape our Lives Authors Robin DiAngelo and Jennifer Eberhardt appear in conversation to discuss race, racism, and the power of bias.

“We all have ideas about race, even the most open-minded among us,” Jennifer Eberhardt writes in Biased: Uncovering the Hidden Prejudice that Shapes What We See, Think, and Do. “Those ideas have the power to bias our perception, our attention, our memory, and our actions—all despite our conscious awareness or deliberate intentions.”

On February 8, Cleveland Public Library will welcome Eberhardt along with Robin DiAngelo, author of White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism, for a frank conversation surrounding race relations, implicit bias, reform, and why discussing racism can be so fraught for so many Americans.

This event is part of the Library’s Writers & Readers series, which engages authors, academics, and public figures in discussions surrounding the books and stories that have shaped their lives.

In addition to discussing the impact of stories, Eberhardt and DiAngelo will encourage attendees to think more deeply about how race plays a role in their lives and in the larger world. As Eberhardt writes in Biased, “Confronting implicit bias requires us to look in the mirror . . .

By acknowledging the distorting lens of fear and bias, we move one step closer to clearly seeing each other. And we move one step closer to clearly seeing the social harms—the devastation—that bias can leave in its wake.”

Eberhardt is a social psychologist and Stanford University professor who explores the psychological association between race and crime. Her research focuses on how racialized judgments “suffuse our culture and society, and in particular shape 8

actions and outcomes within the domain of criminal justice.” DiAngelo is an Affiliate Associate Professor of Education at the University of Washington, and her primary area of research is in Whiteness Studies and Critical Discourse Analysis. She’s also a consultant and trainer for racial and social justice issues.

In White Fragility, DiAngelo uses her “insider status” as a white person to investigate and challenge the racism embedded in our culture. She implores other white Americans to find a way to talk about racism and to investigate their own blind spots, defensive arguments, and the discomfort of acknowledging implicit racism. In the process, DiAngelo aims not to level judgments against white people, but to show how everyone is unconsciously conditioned in a culture steeped in racist ideology. As she writes in White Fragility, “racism is a structure, not an event.”

“I came to see that the way we are taught to define racism makes it virtually impossible for white people to understand it. Given our racial insulation, coupled with misinformation, any suggestion that we are complicit in racism is a kind of unwelcome and insulting shock to the system,” DiAngelo writes. “If, however, I understand racism as a system into which I was socialized, I can receive feedback on my problematic racial patterns as a helpful way to support my learning and growth.”

This event aligns with the Library’s mission of serving as the center of learning for a diverse and inclusive community. All Clevelanders are invited to listen, consider, and engage with the topics raised by these two acclaimed authors.

“Jennifer Eberhardt and Robin DiAngelo are experts exploring vital cultural issues, and we’re honored to have them appear at the Library for this thought-provoking and timely discussion,” says Felton Thomas, Jr., Executive Director of Cleveland Public Library. “This conversation might not always be easy, but it’s important—and it’s one with the power to challenge, inspire, and benefit our community.”

As DiAngelo explains in White Fragility, engaging in these discussions can help elevate our discourse while, ideally, bringing about change: “My hope is that you may gain insight into why people who identify as white are so difficult in conversations regarding race and/or gain insight into your own racial responses as you navigate the roiling racial waters of daily life,” she writes.

ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16, MORE THAN 400 GUESTS gathered in Main Library to mingle, dine, and dance at Cleveland Public Library’s 150th Anniversary Affair. Hosted by the Cleveland Public Library Foundation, this event honored the Library’s sesquicentennial anniversary and encouraged philanthropic support. Local authors Dan Chaon, Raquel Eatmon, Paula McLain, Philip Metres, D.M. Pulley, and Loung Ung attended as honored guests; awards were bestowed upon Thomas D. Corrigan and Robert Pincus; and the festivities included puppetry exhibit tours, live music, themed cocktails, dancing, dessert, and more.
