ublisher Welcome to Cleveland and Bolivar County
Welcome to Cleveland and Bolivar County, Mississippi which is often referred to as the Center of the Mississippi Delta! This is because Cleveland is located between Clarksdale, Greenwood, Indianola and Greenville and that is why our town continues to be the hub of our region of Mississippi. Cleveland is also known as the home of Delta State University and for the town’s many shopping opportunities, entertainment venues, and restaurants. Additionally, our outdoor opportunities are almost limitless due to our location a few miles east of the Mississippi River. Speaking of Delta State University, the school is not only a major attraction for students, but for others as well because of the variety of offerings that constantly take place on the DSU campus. These offerings range from major theatrical and musical productions at the

Bologna Performing Arts Center, to sports events and conferences. The GRAMMY Museum® Mississippi, is also one the town’s most noted attractions. In fact, it is the only GRAMMY Museum located outside of Los Angeles. Exhibits celebrate all genres of music and several times a year the museum features lectures and performances by some of the world’s most noted entertainers. Rock icon, Peter Frampton; country music great, Garth Brooks; blues singer Bobby Rush and current blues guitarist sensation KingFish; Geoff Emerick, who recorded The Beatles’ records; Roger Fisher, the founding member of the rock band, Heart; and Elvis Presley’s band are just a few of the many performers and music industry insiders who have appeared at the museum. There is much to see and do in Cleveland and Bolivar County, Mississippi! We hope you enjoy your visit.

C
FROM THE
hamber Director Welcome to Cleveland and Bolivar County It’s my pleasure to welcome you, if you are a visitor or local, to our beautiful community set in the heart of the Mississippi Delta. In my role as the CEO of the Cleveland-Bolivar County Chamber of Commerce, I get asked monthly to speak to groups about Cleveland and Bolivar County. I always start with what is the heart and soul of a community– its people. The people are what make Cleveland one of the best small towns in the United States according to Smithsonian and Southern Living magazines. The heart of any community is found in its downtown. I may be biased, but I believe Cleveland has the best downtown in Mississippi. A thriving downtown is a reflection of a thriving community. Without a strong and robust local industrial sector for jobs and a strong tourism presence drawing regional and international visitors to the GRAMMY Museum Mississippi and other attractions, there would not be a sustainable influx of visitors for our thriving downtown. Court Street serves as a direct corridor into Delta State University from our downtown shops and restaurants. The students and faculty add the flair and excitement of making Cleveland a college town. From athletes to artists, you will find the fingerprints of DSU all over our community. Our downtown is a reflection of the hard work of so many who volunteer countless hours to maintain the landscaping, organize the farmers market, and line up live music at venues across town. You truly never know what you will find taking place when you come downtown. I hope you enjoy your time in Bolivar County. Feel free to stop by the Chamber of Commerce at 101 South Bayou Avenue (just look for the train depot downtown) or give us a call at 662-843-2712 if you have any questions or need to know where to eat or what to do while you are here. Welcome, and we are glad you are here! Lara Bowman CEO Cleveland-Bolivar County Chamber of Commerce

orn into the vibrant heritage of the inimitable Mississippi Delta, Cleveland has a history as rich as the fertile farmland that lay hidden beneath the thick forests that were present when Bolivar County began in 1836. One of our strongest features is the various ethnicities that made their home here in Bolivar County— along with the rest of the Delta. SOME FACTS: • We are the only Bolivar County in the USA • We are the 2nd largest county (geographically) in Mississippi; 906 square miles The Delta is an alluvial plain lying in the northwestern part of Mississippi, below Memphis, Tenn. It is the area of land situated between the Mississippi River to the west and the Yazoo River to the south. At its widest point, the Delta stretches roughly sixty miles to the east where the terrain

changes abruptly to hills. This flat land was formed by deposits from the Mississippi River and its tributaries over eons of changing river courses and seasonal high water. Prior to the building of the levee along the Mississippi, flooding was a constant, creating a swampy area that made navigation and settlement difficult. Those factors, along with a generally mild climate, combined to produce rich soil, great forests, and dense undergrowth. The Delta was a perfect habitat for wildlife—alligators, wolves, black bears, wildcats, foxes, beavers, otters, turkeys, panthers, deer, a variety of birds, and of course, mosquitoes—many of which are still present today. A mecca for outdoor enthusiasts, Bolivar County is bordered on the west by the Mississippi River and is home to several lakes and streams along with public hunting areas such as Dahomey National Wildlife Refuge, the Great River Road WMA, and Lake

Charlie Capps. For more information, visit fws.gov/refuge/ Dahomey or mdwfp.com The first Deltans were mound-building Native Americans. Although some of the mounds have been lost to time, many are still visible. Recently, the Mississippi Department of Archives and History created the Mississippi Mound Trail to bring awareness to these wonders. Each of the mounds on the trail can be viewed from public roadways and feature accompanying markers. trails.mdah.ms.gov The Spaniards exploring the New World in 1541 encountered these Native Americans along the Mississippi River. It is probable that Hernando De Soto “discovered” the River near Bolivar County. Other explorers followed the same general route—Marquette and Joliet in 1673 then LaSalle in 1682. Over 100 years later exploration gave way to American
expansion. Mississippi received its statehood in 1817 and Bolivar County was formed in 1836. The Native Americans, through a series of treaties, were removed westward with Indian Point in southwestern Bolivar County, a main point of embarkation. The first few white settlers came to Bolivar County in the early 1800’s and more quickly followed as the word spread about the abundance of virgin timber, fertile soil, and open opportunities. Where one can see a thriving town and community, there once was a thick swampland full of cypress and other species of trees with which the early residents carved out a life. Strong axmen cut down the forests and discovered that the soil beneath was 40-60 feet deep, so if they needed virgin soil, they simply dug deeper and struck planting gold every time. The “King of Crops” at that time was cotton— and this was the ideal location for the growing of the white

wealth-maker. These bold gamblers braved the elements— flooding, mosquitoes, and subsequent disease to carve out farms, homes, and a government along the riverside. The county seat of Bolivar County moved several times before situating in Rosedale. Much of the interior of the county remained virtually untouched except for a few small sawmill operations. In 1884 the Louisville, New Orleans, and Texas railroad was built through the Delta, passing through the eastern half of Bolivar County. Situated approximately halfway between Memphis and Vicksburg was a little sawmilling community which at various times was called Simms or Fontaine. The first railroad maps called it Coleman. The good fortune of being the halfway point meant that Coleman was a railroad stopping point and quickly businesses, homes, and schools were built. In 1886 Coleman was incorporated as the Town of Cleveland. The town grew steadily and by 12 2022 CLEVELAND WELCOME GUIDE
1901 Cleveland was named the second county seat and a new courthouse was erected. Bolivar County is one of ten counties in Mississippi with two judicial districts. The LNO & T Railroad was promptly absorbed by the Yazoo & Mississippi Valley RR. Spur tracks were built; crisscrossing the county as sawmill and stave operations began to rapidly clear the great forests with their steam equipment. Towns formed all along the railroad tracks as the railroad company encouraged settlement by making the acreage inexpensive to purchase. One of the most historic of these towns in Bolivar County is Mound Bayou, established by Isaiah T. Montgomery and other former slaves. As more trees were cleared, more land was put into cultivation. In the early days, all of the planting and harvesting was done by hand. At the end of WWI, just as after the Civil War, African Americans left Bolivar County

in great numbers, but many stayed, becoming tenant farmers. There was an increasing demand for labor and Delta planters began to recruit overseas. As early as the late 1880s the first Italians were making their home in Bolivar County. Chinese were recruited in much the same manner. Jewish settlers arrived and began making their living as peddlers. By living frugally, the Chinese immigrants realized an opportunity to open their own markets and grocery stores. Italian farm laborers became farm owners. Jewish peddlers became store-front merchants. Other immigrant groups such as Mexicans and Lebanese came to the Delta came as well. Today, in addition to the first settlers of English, Scottish, German, Irish, and African descent, Bolivar County is its own “melting pot” of ethnicities. The African-American influence in the county’s history is quite evident. Nearby Dockery Plantation is designated with a Blues Trail marker declaring the location as the

probable “Birthplace of the Blues.” Many of the early Delta Bluesmen lived and worked around Dockery, influencing each other and educating the next generation. The railroad and the Blues go hand in hand as many Blues lyrics sing about the train either with sorrow or joy. Charley Patton wrote “Peavine Blues,” referring to the winding railroad that connected Dockery with Rosedale on the riverside. There are several Blues Trail markers scattered throughout the county and many a scenic back road will still take you there. If you ask the right locals, you may actually find the real Crossroads where Robert Johnson reportedly sold his soul to the Devil. msbluestrail.org The City of Cleveland has always been fortunate to have forward-thinking leadership, but perhaps no group of City leaders has been more progressive than the elected officials in the early 1920s. As the State Legislature considered a location for a new Normal college, Cleveland became 2022 CLEVELAND WELCOME GUIDE 13

the obvious choice due to its central Delta location, the railroad, and the donation of land. However, perhaps the most important factor in the equation was the City leaders’ willingness to relocate the infamous Black Bear Saloon that was located between the depot and the soon-to-be Delta Normal College, now Delta State University. In the early 1950s the astute City leaders were able to attract Baxter Laboratories and MP & L’s Delta Steam Electric Station just north of town. The population of Cleveland basically doubled over the following decade. Most recently, the City of Cleveland and Bolivar County, partnering with DSU, was able to see the realization of the GRAMMY Museum adjacent to Delta State’s campus. It is the most technologically advanced music museum in the world and the only other GRAMMY Museum outside of Los Angeles. Although always looking ahead, Cleveland (cityofclevelandms.com) and Bolivar County (co.bolivar. ms.us) have developed an increasing appreciation for preservation and promoting our past. Cleveland is also home to the City of Cleveland’s Railroad Heritage Museum, housing the largest O gauge model layout in the southeast, thousands of railroad artifacts, and a 1941 Illinois Central 14 2022 CLEVELAND WELCOME GUIDE
caboose, all paying tribute to our railroad beginnings. The Mississippi Delta Chinese Heritage Museum is located on the third floor of the Delta State Archives & Museum with both museums hosting outstanding displays and exhibits highlighting various facets of our history. The Boo Ferriss Baseball Museum, located beside the DSU baseball stadium, honors the late Red Sox pitcher and Hall of Famer, Boo Ferriss, a Shaw, Miss. native and legendary coach at DSU. The Amzie Moore House is the actual home of the late Civil Rights leader, which has been preserved and converted into a museum, paying tribute to his efforts. The home has also been designated as a stop on the Freedom Trail. visitmississippi.org Throughout Bolivar County, you will find numerous sites designated with historical markers, Blues Trail markers, and Freedom Trail markers. Cleveland is located on the Blues Highway (Hwy 61) and the western side of the county is home to the Great River Road (Hwy 1). Tourism has become a very integral part of the Mississippi Delta, and as we attract more and more visitors to our home here in Cleveland, we hope you enjoy your stay and we’d like to say: Welcome to Cleveland!

IS THIS CLEVELAND, MISSISSIPPI? This is a typical question after one has the chance to browse the many retail spaces in Cleveland’s historic downtown.
W
ith ample clothing stores, two master jewelers, a humble bookstore, specialty food products (many made in the Delta), and enough gift options to cross every item off of a Christmas list, visitors cannot believe their eyes and good fortune. What was once a dusty, dirt road that provided a 26 2022 CLEVELAND WELCOME GUIDE
meeting place for farmers who would bring their finest harvest to market, Cleveland’s downtown now has all the charm with the history to match. The city relied heavily on its railroad, giving the downtown the shape of a rectangle rather than a traditional town square. The downtown area of Cleveland was constructed around the railroad, and though the tracks have long since been removed, there is still a hint of its history. In the old days, residents made their way downtown after work to browse in the various shops and visit with their neighbors and friends. That still holds true today as the heart of every Southern community is its downtown, and Cleveland’s is vibrant and growing.
The award-winning Historic Crosstie Shopping District offers a diverse array of specialty shops, antique stores and cafés within walking distance. Visitors come from all over the country to experience the picturesque main-street stores, offering big-city shopping in a small-town atmosphere. The historic look of Cleveland lends an old-world charm, while the wares inside offer modern-day amenities and selections. With a walking trail through the middle of downtown and a bike trail on the south side, both offer beautiful views and comfortable seating areas for those wanting to stroll
and exercise while taking in the beauty of Cleveland’s landscape. With the easy park-and-stroll setup of downtown Cleveland, it is easy to see why so many people come to spend a day walking the brick sidewalks, perusing the latest merchandise and one-of-a-kind items, and eating lunch at one of our fabulous downtown establishments. Grab lunch to go from one of our many eateries and sit under the gazebo, designed by the late Felix Hammack for residents and visitors alike to enjoy the sights and sounds of downtown. 2022 CLEVELAND WELCOME GUIDE 27

he South is known for home cooked meals, spicy hot tamales, and mouth watering barbecue, and we will not disappoint. Bolivar County is known for such fare alongside other traditional favorites. Feel like a plate of crispy fried chicken? Look no further. Most every restaurant serves this essential dish their own way, not every recipe for the crunchy crust is the same. You may need to eat it once a day to choose your favorite.

A unique pairing in the Delta is on several Friday lunch menus –– spaghetti and fried catfish. This combo is a nod to our Italian community and our favorite fish. Feel free to indulge yourself with our barbecue. From pulled pork plates to falling off the bone ribs, you will discover the Delta way is the only way. Barbecue joints can be found in most towns in the four corners of Bolivar County, and we encourage you to try them all. Served with Coleslaw, baked beans, barbecue is a delicacy you will love. Hot tamales have become the stuff of legend in our region, bringing in guests from all over the world who seek to name the best there is. The tradition of this Delta staple is a historic tale, and the tamale even found fame in
blues songs such as Robert Johnson’s “Red Hot.” Read up on the history of the delicious corn husked-delicacy at tamaletrail.com. Bolivar County even has a few restaurants featured on the interactive trail, created by the Southern Foodways Alliance. Whether you like yours covered with chili and cheese or with a few packs of saltines, you can get your fill right here in Cleveland alone. Steaks, seafood and good old fashion hamburgers also grace the menus of our restaurants. Cooked to perfection and served with a side of fries, yes, please! Find seafood gumbo, crawfish etouffee and other Southern staples on our menus. Need a cup of joe to keep you going? Cleveland is home to numerous coffee shops ready to get you on your way. These quaint little spots are made for relaxing, having a good conversation with friends or even finishing up a term paper. Wake up and smell the gourmet coffee!
The Delta is also known for its soul food or also known as country cooking. Lunch buffets are filled with locallysourced veggies, pans of cornbread, greens with pot liquor and smothered pork chops. Leave full and satisfied with our traditional Southern cuisine. While all this sounds full of calories, we also appreciate a good salad, mushroom burger and other vegetarian dishes for those who are health-conscious. Brunch has caught on and Cleveland has several morning spots that serve Bloody Marys, Mimosas and twists on typical breakfast items. Last but not least, we are known for our fresh, hot and spicy crawfish! Keep your eyes open for restaurants who serve this treat, and if you are unfamiliar with this Cajun favorite, a local will be happy to show you the proper way to pop them in your mouth.

FOR A DEEPER INSIGHT INTO WHY THE DELTA IS THE WAY IT IS, take a look inside our museums.
T
he Delta is a melting pot of many ethnicities, and we embrace them all. If you are a music lover, GRAMMY Museum Mississippi is a must see on your tour. This interactive museum opened in the Spring of 2016 and celebrates our state as the “Birthplace of America’s Music.” Located near the campus of Delta State University, the 28,000 square foot museum features a 140 seat state-of-the-art theater and houses more than two dozen exhibits that explore great music, from rock and hip-hop to country, classical, Latin, R&B, and jazz. GRAMMY Museum Mississippi also offers diverse educational and public programs featuring films, lectures, and live performances. Peter Frampton came alive with an intimate concert that showed us all the way. Who knows who may give a surprise performance?
56 2022 CLEVELAND WELCOME GUIDE
With the additions of GRAMMY Week that features current Mississippi talent and award nominees, and even more down-home events such as Kids Rock the Red Carpet, you won’t find a better spot for excitement and music. For more information, visit their website at grammymuseums.org. Keeping with music, the Delta is home of the Blues and there is no better place to explore this topic than at Dockery Farms. Situated east of Cleveland, Dockery claims famed Blues musician, Charley Patton, whose parents moved to the farm seeking a better life. His influence reached 100s of musicians who patterned their play after this legend. Dockery Farms is open year round and from dawn until dusk. This storied piece of property has the soul and spirit to give Blues lovers an authentic dose. Dockery Farms is also one of many places to be the site where Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil. If fabled tales are your thing, Rosedale and Clarksdale also claim to be the spot which rock musicians have noted in their songs. Eric Clapton “believed” the riverside city to be the spot and recorded Crossroads, an ode to Johnson who wrote the original. Not only did Clapton find the story intriguing, so did
Hollywood, and in 1986, the movie by the same title was filmed in the Delta and starred Ralph Macchio, Jami Gertz and Steve Vai, a guitar god in his own right. Crossroads is one of many films set in the Delta, and in recent years more and more directors have come calling. Son, which was filmed in Cleveland and other parts of the Delta, stars Emile Hirsch, and has cameos by numerous residents. Our biggest claim to fame is Baby Doll, set in Benoit on the westside of the county. The Baby Doll House still stands and is used as a venue for weddings, dinner parties and any Southern get together. While staying on Miss. Highway 1, there are nearly twenty Blues Trail markers in the county that stretch from the Great River Road, Highway 1, to Highway 61, known as the Blues Highway. Visit the places where blues music was sung, created, danced to, and is still enjoyed today. For a complete driving map of Bolivar County markers, visit visitclevelandms.com, or msbluestrail.org, where there are also smart phone apps that can be downloaded. If you are looking for a little guidance or information on guided tours of the history and heritage of the area,

then The Delta Center for Culture and Learning is a mustvisit. The Delta Center, located at Delta State University, strives to promote a greater understanding of the history and culture of the Mississippi Delta and its significance to the world. The Delta Center is an excellent resource for learning more about the region’s history and culture. Visit The Delta Center’s website at deltacenterdsu. com for more information. From music to trains to civil rights to sports heroes, Cleveland has museums and displays that visitors from all over flock to see. At the Martin and Sue King Railroad Heritage Museum there are many displays, old photos, railroad maps and interesting artifacts that tell the story of how the railway shaped the land, put our town on the map, and was imperative to the future of Bolivar County and the Delta. By preserving and promoting the history of the area, that story can be told through the museum’s collection. Along with the displays, there is a full model railroad that runs through “Anytown,” Mississippi. The incredible detail, sounds, and scale of the train are enjoyable to both children and adults. Local craftsmen bring this exhibit to life, and is one spot on a tour of the Delta you don’t want to miss. For more information, call (662) 843-3377. Located at Delta State is the Charles W. Capps, Jr. Archives and Museum. With displays ranging from Delta State history to old maps of the area, the museum is a source of great information about our area. Another unique and exciting offering is the Mississippi Delta Chinese Heritage Museum, located on the third floor of the Capps Archives. 58 2022 CLEVELAND WELCOME GUIDE
One of the important Freedom Trail markers in the South, can be found in Cleveland at the Amzie Moore House Museum and Interpretive Center. Moore was instrumental in the crusade for rights for all, and his home on Chrisman Street saw meetings with Medgar Evers, Fannie Lou Hamer, Martin Luther King Jr., and Bobby Kennedy. Civil Rights were honed in the Delta. Cleveland also is known for sports legend, Dave “Boo” Ferriss, who played for the Boston Red Sox and served as longtime baseball coach at Delta State University. By visiting Inning by Inning: A Life in Baseball, The Dave “Boo” Ferriss Museum, baseball enthusiasts are able to see Ferriss’ career chronicled through personal artifacts and photos from his early days in Shaw, Mississippi, to his Boston Red Sox days, and finally of his successful coaching career at Delta State. This museum is a must-see for sports fans. To schedule visits to the Chinese Heritage Museum, Amzie Moore House, and Boo Ferriss Museum, please contact the Capps Archives at (662) 846-4780. If you love outdoors, Dahomey National Wildlife Refuge is located fifteen miles southwest of Cleveland, and was established in 1990 when the Nature Conservancy purchased 9,269 acres and leased the land back to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for management. This is an ideal spot for birdwatching, searching for interesting plant life and native animals. The Prothonotary Warbler is a beautiful yellow bird that can be found in the refuge in the summer. There are thousands of indigenous species of life to discover. For more information, call (662) 742-3378.

IF CLEVELAND IS THE HEART OF THE MISSISSIPPI DELTA, then Delta State University is the heartbeat.

f you head west at the intersection of U.S. Highway 61 and MS-8, you’ll discover the hub of educational excellence, athletic pride and cultural enrichments for the region—Delta State University. Perhaps best known for its successful alumni like former CEO and chairman of UPS David Abney; record-breaking athletes like Lusia “Lucy” Harris; renowned coaches including Margaret Wade and Boo Ferriss; and of course,

its beloved unofficial mascot, The Fighting Okra. Delta State and the Mississippi Delta region have enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship that has lasted more than 90 years. Delta State’s beginnings can be traced back to 1922, when formal talks began with the Mississippi Legislature and other state entities and leaders to establish a state institution of higher learning in Cleveland. Through an organized effort by Cleveland business and political leaders, citizens rallied for Delta State Teachers College, and their hard work brought the university to Cleveland. On June 7, 1924, Delta State Teachers College opened with a faculty of eleven and an enrollment of 123. In 1955, the name was changed to Delta State College due to the expanding educational programs offered. In 1974, Delta State College became Delta State University. While DSU began as a teachers college, and still
produces some of the best and brightest educators in the state, the University has made several additions to its curriculum. DSU houses a College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business and Aviation, College of Education and Human Sciences, as well as the Robert E. Smith School of Nursing, and Graduate and Continuing Studies. Students can receive degrees in Fine Arts, Science, Business Administration, Music, Music Education, Nursing, Education, Social Work and General Studies. To further their education, students can receive a master’s degree in Professional Accountancy, Business Administration, Science, Education, Educational Specialist, Applied Sciences, Nursing, Liberal Studies, Natural Science, and Science in Social Justice and Criminology. The University also offers several unique educational opportunities, such as the state’s only bachelor’s and
master’s degree in commercial aviation. In Oct. 2018, FedEx pledged $500,000 over five years to support aviation scholarships intended to help offset climbing educational costs to train the next generation of aviation professionals. Delta State is one of only seven universities nationwide selected for the grants under the new FedEx Purple Runway Aviation Scholarship Program. The Center for Interdisciplinary Geospatial Information Technologies is an independent unit of the College of Arts and Sciences and has grown considerably over the past several years. The mission of the center is to provide geospatial services, accessible education and training, and institutional knowledge for geospatial information technologies to the widest possible audience, and particularly, the mid-Delta region. Recently, the center became a Regional Support Office for the United Nations 2022 CLEVELAND WELCOME GUIDE 61
Platform for Space-based Disaster Management and Emergency Response, the only one in North America. The Robert E. Smith School of Nursing houses another signature program at Delta State. From the bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees in nursing to the RN-BSN Completion Program, Delta State fills hospitals and medical facilities with quality nursing professionals. While many students come to DSU from the Delta region, the University offers no out-of-state tuition fees, attracting those from other areas of the country. On the international front, the University is also expanding its footprints with students from forty-two countries currently represented on campus. With the Mississippi Delta being the birthplace of American music, DSU opened the Delta Music Institute (DMI) Recording Studios in the spring of 2009. DMI is also home to the DMI Mobile Music Lab, a mobile music technology facility serving upper elementary through high school students in the Mississippi Delta. Through the Delta Music Institute, an exciting new chapter has begun at the GRAMMY Museum® Mississippi, the first sanctioned GRAMMY Museum® outside of Los Angeles that has recently been built on the campus of Delta State University. A new Digital Media Arts (DMA) program was also 62 2022 CLEVELAND WELCOME GUIDE
recently added at DSU. The program is situated in the former Odealier Morgan Laundry building and features a state-of-the-art Mac Lab, a green screen area, 2D and 3D animation technology and a voice-over booth across 6,000 square feet. DSU is the only program in the state to offer an Animation concentration. Delta State is also home of the Bologna Performing Arts Center, a multi-disciplinary facility that provides firstclass arts and entertainment for DSU and the region. The BPAC, as it is called locally, opened its doors in 1995. The main performance hall consists of 1,178 seats in the Delta & Pine Land Theater and 135 seats in the Recital Hall. It has earned recognition as one of the premier houses for entertainment and arts in Mississippi and the Southeast. In 2000, The Delta Center for Culture and Learning was launched, designed to promote greater understanding of Mississippi Delta culture and history and its significance to the world through education, partnerships and community engagement. The Delta Center serves as the management entity of the Mississippi Delta National Heritage Area (MDNHA) and is the home of the International Delta Blues Project and the National Endowment for the Humanities’ Most Southern Place on Earth workshops for K-12 educators. In addition to its educational and cultural influences,

Delta State serves as an economic powerhouse in the region and beyond. Delta State has a $175 million positive impact on the Mississippi Delta, which breaks down as $44 million in direct spending, and $110 million in knowledge impact of $81 million in increased alumni earnings, $27 million in social benefits and $2 million in cultural benefits. DSU supports roughly 550 jobs, including more than 400 fulltime employees. Delta State further provides more than 207,000 hours in community development activities such as health, education and civic outreach. DSU continues to refine and update programs as well as renovate building, structures and roadways for a fresh look on campus. In the past year, Delta State has completed a number of renovation projects designed to enhance the campus and make it a more efficient environment for students, faculty, staff and the community. With funds from the Mississippi Department of Transportation, the University recently completed Phase One of a sidewalk project, which included resurfacing sidewalks located on the south end of campus. Work on Phase Two is expected to commence soon. 64 2022 CLEVELAND WELCOME GUIDE
In May 2021, the University celebrated the grand opening of its new President’s Home that is utilized as residence for the University’s first family as well as a public event space for University functions. Another building, the Young-Mauldin Cafeteria (affectionately called “the spaceship” for its circular building) recently underwent a $9.2 million renovation that DSU President William N. LaForge compared to “a mall with a food court.” The cafeteria is a top dining choice for community members, who frequently visit for fried chicken on Wednesdays and the Delta delicacy, catfish, on Fridays. Additionally, the Mill food court, located inside of the H.L. Nowell Union, recently underwent a $2 million renovation and now features a full-service Chick-fil-A, a Firehouse Subs, an expanded Burrito Bowl, along with the popular Starbucks. The University also recently renovated the William H. Zeigel Music Center, named for the late William Henry Zeigel, who came in 1925 as the first academic dean and served until his retirement in 1947. Zeigel now boasts a large rehearsal room for band, a recital hall which seats two hundred people, seventeen studio offices, fifteen practice
rooms and classrooms for music. The University is looking to kick-off a renovation and expansion project to the Robert E. Smith School of Nursing building soon. The project will add classrooms, several working labs as well as other renovations of the existing building. For Delta State sport fans, Statesmen Boulevard is a scenic route that was created to improve gameday traffic. The boulevard extends from Miss. Highway 8 to the west side of the football stadium. There were structural improvements to the streets around and in front of the stadium— new sidewalks and street lighting were installed, storm drainage piping and fencing were constructed and fresh greenery, shrubbery and flowers added the final touch. Nothing says welcome to DSU like Statesmen Boulevard! One of eight public universities in Mississippi, Delta State University continues to receive accolades from across the educational spectrum for the many world-class academic programs the school offers. Additionally, Delta State’s sports teams have won many regional and national championships, drawing much positive attention to the University.
Delta State is where one of the greatest women’s basketball players, Lusia “Lucy” Harris, gained national and international attention, as she led the women’s basketball team, under the tenure of the legendary Coach Margaret Wade, to three national titles from 1975-1977. Harris would go on to earn many more accolades, including scoring the first basket in women’s Olympics basketball history during the ‘76 Olympics and to be the first one woman drafted to the NBA. The tradition of championships remains strong with Delta State Athletics boasting fifteen national championship titles—more than any other program in the state—thirtyfive regional championships and fifty-two conference titles in their storied history. In 2021, the Delta State Swim Team added to that total, bringing home four national titles from the NCAA Division II National Championships. Delta State’s Ronald G. Mayers Aquatics Center, which opened in 2001, is a 46,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility. The center includes a sixty-meter by twenty-fiveyard pool with moveable bulkheads, plus a separate diving well. It has enough seating to accommodate over 2,500 swimming enthusiasts. The center also has men’s and 2022 CLEVELAND WELCOME GUIDE 65
women’s dressing rooms, an athletic training area, offices for the staff and two large classrooms. In over eighty years of competition, no other Mississippi university has enjoyed the level of success Delta State University has achieved on the field. The Lady Statesmen have claimed six national titles in women’s basketball in the program’s illustrious history. Coach Wade guided the Lady Statesmen to the first threepeat in women’s intercollegiate basketball in the mid-1970s. Lloyd Clark would pick up where Wade left off, guiding DSU to three NCAA Division II crowns from 1989-1992.
66 2022 CLEVELAND WELCOME GUIDE
In 2004, Mike Kinnison, a former manager turned AllAmerican shortstop turned Statesmen skipper, directed Delta State’s baseball program to its first NCAA Division II National Championship, after Coach Dave “Boo” Ferriss and Coach Bill Marchant had paved the way. In 2019 Kinnison became the sixth director of athletics. His 23rd and final season as baseball skipper concluded with his eighth GSC championship. The Statesmen football program reached the “higher ground” in 2000, as former coach Steve Campbell directed the program to the national title with a thumping of Bloomsberg at Braly Municipal Stadium in Florence, Alabama. Delta State continues to build upon this momentum through the leadership of President William N. LaForge, DSU’s eighth leader. A Cleveland native with a 36-year career in both the public and private sectors in Washington, D.C., LaForge has brought a fresh perspective on finances, student relations and how the community—his community —can work to the benefit of both Cleveland and Delta State. LaForge is not only an alum; he is also a legacy. His father, Dr. William LaForge, was a longtime history professor and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, whose namesake building, the Roberts-LaForge Library, rests on the south side of the campus. Delta State continues to be the leader in education in the Mississippi Delta, and the University is proud to be situated in Cleveland, the heart of the Mississippi Delta.

ow celebrating its fifth anniversary, the Museum honors all forms of recorded music in words, pictures, art, film, and sound. It’s a venue where visitors, young and seasoned, enjoy the unique opportunity to live in a moment of music. You hear it. You see it. You even feel it. It’s an experience like none other in the world. Built and operated by the Cleveland Music Foundation, 76 2022 CLEVELAND WELCOME GUIDE
a non-profit organization developed in 2011, the 28,000-square-foot, $20 million GRAMMY Museum Mississippi is housed near the campus of Delta State University. Similar to its sister Museum—GRAMMY Museum® L.A. Live—GRAMMY Museum Mississippi is dedicated to exploring the past, present and future of music, and the cultural context from which it emerges, while casting a focused spotlight on the deep musical roots of Mississippi. “Mississippi didn’t give just the blues to the world,” said Emily Havens, Executive Director for GRAMMY Museum Mississippi. “It has given all forms of American music to the world.” While the Museum celebrates recorded music in its
entirety, special tribute is paid to Mississippi’s GRAMMY winners and nominees. Almost eight percent of all GRAMMY Hall Of Fame® songs have been recorded by artists born in the Magnolia State. The Museum features a room where the autographs of these artists are etched in wood—familiar names such as Elvis Presley, B.B. The Museum is situated near the university’s Delta Music Institute—Mississippi’s sole accredited music industry studies program. It is also close to the Bologna Performing Arts Center, a world-class facility that hosts entertainers from all over the world. Eighty percent of the Museum’s focus is devoted to education, which underlines its mission to bring the power of music to youth of all backgrounds. Students in the Delta and surrounding areas have the opportunity to learn about music through interactive activities, workshops, one-onone instruction, internships, jobs, student exchanges, and simply the opportunity to meet talented musicians in person. “The Museum gives kids a worldly perspective,” said Havens. “It shows young people they can be creative and successful in music and art, and it teaches them how to turn those talents into careers.”
A FEW OF THE HIGHLIGHTS
If you’re in Cleveland, you can’t miss the Museum. Located near downtown on the Delta State campus, GRAMMY Museum Mississippi has the modern architecture representative of its internationally recognized brand, and yet, incorporated in its contemporary design, the architects 78 2022 CLEVELAND WELCOME GUIDE
were very careful to place structural symbols and reminders of the history of the Mississippi Delta and its way of life. In the separate front room of the Museum display area, you will be treated to the special traveling exhibits. Currently, Stronger Together: The Power of Women in Country Music will be on display now until the end of April 2021. Recently added, Willie Mitchell & The Music of Royal Studios will be on display through 2021. After a walk through the main lobby, you enter the permanent display section of the museum. The GRAMMY® Award itself has gone through five iterations since its inception in 1959. In The Evolution of the GRAMMY Award exhibit, learn about the Colorado family who has hand-made the GRAMMY® over seven generations. This area of the Museum has massive monitors that feature a continuous feed of scenes from the most recent GRAMMY Award ceremonies. Neon-lit vertical columns featuring GRAMMY Award winners by decade, grab your attention as you continue through exhibits. Each column has a touch-screen device that allows you to research the songs, performers, and lyrics from each decade’s Album of the Year Award and even listen to the big hits on headsets. Now, you’re in for a Culture Shock. This exhibit highlights moments when music caused major shifts in 2022 CLEVELAND WELCOME GUIDE 79
American culture. Watch and listen as Elvis twists his hips on the Ed Sullivan Show or when peace and love prevailed at Woodstock. You’ll have a blast in the History of Dance exhibit space, where GRAMMY-winner Ne-Yo is ready to teach you some of his signature dance steps. As he instructs in “real life” from an oversized monitor, you learn the dance by following a sequence of lighted tiles in the floor. Step, step, step— it’s easy. And it’s fun! Now you’re ready to write, record, and produce a blues song, or a song from any genre of your choice, in a realistic studio setting. Write the lyrics and rehearse the song alongside three-time GRAMMY-winning blues musician Keb’ Mo’. Your song is recorded and then sent to the production studio, where Keb’ Mo’ talks you through 80 2022 CLEVELAND WELCOME GUIDE
the process of producing the sound. You choose the instruments, levels, and volume. It’s all yours! Your finished song is saved to the Museum database. The Mono To Surround exhibit demonstrates how sound has advanced for the consumers of recorded music. You enter an isolated booth that fits several people and features several speakers positioned throughout the room. Hit the start button, and a list of songs appears on the flat-screen monitor. Select a song and hear how it sounds on a wax cylinder, a gramophone, and monophonic to stereophonic 78-RPM discs. Finally, you’ll hear your song in today’s state-of-the-art, high-definition 5.1 surround sound. We’ve come a long way, baby! Roland Corporation is one of the most elite manufacturers of electronic musical instruments. In the Roland Room, you
have the chance to play those instruments as though you’re performing a concert—complete with stage and overhead lights. Play the drums, the keyboards, the guitar—tear it up! You’re the only one who can hear your sound on the headset you’re wearing. Live in your own musical world while playing amazing quality Roland instruments. The final exhibit, The Mississippi Gallery, is dedicated to Mississippi’s GRAMMY Award winners and nominees. Pull up a seat at the Mississippi Music Bar and use the touch screen to discover all the artists who hail from the Magnolia State. Learn about the people and listen to their groundbreaking songs. View artifacts from Mississippi artists as you follow the Mississippi Music Trails, a map showing locations of award winners and a timeline of the state’s contributions to country music and the blues.
It gets even better. Wrap up your experience at the Mississippi Music Table, a remarkable interactive display that lets you and your friends get in on the action. The table is twelve feet long and is comprised of a series of large, high-definition, flat-screen monitors. A constant moving river of images floats by of not only Mississippi’s finest musicians, artists, and songwriters but also those who have drawn their influence from Mississippi artists. Touch one of the pictures, and you’ll get bios, lists of songs, and other interesting facts. Listen to their music on the headset and if you like what you hear, you can send that artist to any of your friends around the table. In addition to the in-house and traveling displays, GRAMMY Museum Mississippi hosts a steady stream of artists and music-industry insiders who present live programming on the state-of-the-art sound stage in the Museum’s 140-seat auditorium. “From a technology standpoint, it has some of the most sophisticated, interactive components in any museum in the South” said Havens. “The Museum, is truly a remarkable facility.” Be sure to check online at grammymuseumms.org for hours of operation, admission tickets, full event schedule and more information regarding health and safety protocols surrounding COVID-19. Those looking for outdoor recreational activities can visit Perry Martin Lake, where bass, white perch and catfish abound. Visitors can hike the nature trail through lush woodlands teeming with deer, turkey, a variety of birds and other wildlife. Bolivar County is home to a variety of great fishing spots and lakes for bird watching and recreational activities that offer visitors and locals enjoyment year-round. Another way to experience the outdoors in Cleveland, and also get some exercise, is making use of one of the many walking trails that Cleveland boasts. The downtown

Also, there is a track located on the intramural fields at Delta State University that is not only marked for distance, but has workout equipment as well. It is well-lit at night so the lack of sunlight is not a deterrent. A bike trail was also constructed in downtown Cleveland, complete with full lighting for nighttime visibility. Around 1.2 miles, this trail offers a smooth ride for any cyclist. There are several parks in Cleveland that hold fun for the whole family. Bear Pen Park is home to a great playground, walking trail, tennis courts, baseball facilities and pond where you can feed the ducks. There is also a picnic area for gatherings. Another local park is in the heart of Cleveland, called Fireman’s Park. With soccer fields, baseball fields, a playground, tennis courts and a wading pool, this popular park also has a gathering space, gazebo and green space to enjoy a day outdoors. I love this question! I love Cleveland because it’s the biggest small town in Mississippi. Whether you’re looking for great shopping, dining, art, entertainment or sporting events, there’s so much to do and see. I attribute this to the people that live in and around Cleveland. Visionaries have looked at opportunities in Cleveland and given us things like the Grammy Museum, 50 Nights of Lights, Octoberfest, and all the Keep Cleveland Boring events, just to name a few. I was excited to have the opportunity to move back to the Mississippi Delta ten years ago. Cleveland has always stood out to me as the preferred destination in the Delta. The vibrant community not only provides ample opportunity to grow a business but also a wonderful place to raise a family. I really like living in Cleveland. I feel that my husband and I were planted here in 1985 right after our marriage and starting our careers. There are a lot good people in Cleveland, whose names may never be called out; but it is also a great place to live because of our church life, volunteerism, and education. We enjoy and have been members of New Life Church since 1996. I also like that we have very good restaurants here. My family and friends around the country say that I always make Cleveland sound like some New York type city. I have traveled a little, and I feel that way because community is about being involved.
I love Cleveland because we truly are a jewel in the Mississippi Delta. Especially at Christmas time. The vibe that’s been created here reminds me of Norman Rockwell paintings. I love the fact that customers come in my store as strangers and leave as friends. MELANIE QUINTON

BOLIVAR COUNTY HAS A BURGEONING NUMBER OF INDUSTRIES that have planted strong foundations and harvested much success in the land that normally brings grain to fruition.
W
ithin the county, a strong employment base lends itself to major companies looking for a home. One industry segment––the medical industry––has found a home in Bolivar County. Needle Specialty––a home grown business––opened in 1987 and processes all gauges, large and small, of tubing and wire with multiple designs for an abundance of medical devices in use today. Over 140 people are employed at Needle Specialty. Michael Belenchia took over in 2011 as owner after working in the company since 1993. Belenchia got his start in the medical field working at the county’s oldest medical supplier––Baxter Healthcare. In the 1950s, Baxter Healthcare came to Bolivar County to set up shop. The national company has grown to become

the second largest industry outside of agriculture in the county. Baxter employs around 600 people. The Cleveland facility is Baxter’s longest-operating manufacturing site in the country. The facility produces major medical device platforms including IV solution containers, administration sets and reconstruction devices. With more than six decades of success in Bolivar County, Quality Steel Corporation––founded by Lowry Tims in 1957––has been manufacturing steel propane tanks. At its inception, it was only one of fifty manufacturers in the country. In 1975, Tims’ sons took over after his passing. Since that time, two of the sons have left the company and Jim Tims now presides as president and CEO of QSC. Even in a shrinking market, QSC has maintained growth and garnered more market share. Today, QSC is one of only four American manufacturers still in the national market. Jim credits the company’s success with “the company’s desire for unsurpassed quality.” Located snugly between Jackson and Memphis and just a short drive to Little Rock or New Orleans, Cleveland and Bolivar County are perfectly situated for commercial travel either by highway or the river. For more than 200 years, the Mississippi River has been used to transport goods including grain, wood, chemicals, petroleum products, coffee, coal, edible oils and much more. From commerce on the river in Rosedale to medical products and automotive industry parts, Bolivar County is home indeed. that provide a personal touch that one simply cannot find in metropolitan facilities. Bolivar Medical Center is a Joint Commission Accredited, CMS Deemed Status, 164-bed general acute care hospital located in Cleveland, Mississippi. It is a comprehensive healthcare facility that provides inpatient, outpatient and emergency department services. It was originally East Bolivar County Hospital, and it was located on the current campus of Delta State University where the Robert E. Smith School of Nursing is located now. In 1962, a new building was constructed at 901 East Sunflower Road, and the hospital moved to allow for expansion and additional services. Growth continued during the next decade, so in 1971, amidst the closing of West Bolivar County Hospital in Rosedale, our hospital was renamed to Bolivar County Hospital and expanded a north wing. In September 1997, the hospital realized additional need for space and services, so an Outpatient Rehabilitation facility and a Physicians’ Office building were constructed. The name was updated to Bolivar Medical Center to reflect the medical center offerings. Bolivar Medical Center continues to put patient safety and quality care at the forefront of everyday operations. The medical staff consists of active members whose specialties include cardiology, critical care, family practice, general surgery, internal medicine, nephrology, obstetrics/ gynecology, orthopedics, pathology, pediatric dentistry, psychiatry, radiology and urology.

Dr. Kessa Mauras decided to be a foot doctor while in high school. After researching and shadowing different health professionals, she found that podiatry was the best fit. Also, as a toddler she was in-toed and wore corrective shoes herself. This influenced her career decision. Dr. Mauras attended the California School of Podiatric Medicine (in the Bay area) and graduated from the Wyckoff Heights Medical Center podiatric residency program (NYC). In podiatry school, she was the editor of their academic journal. Her final clinical year was spent at Madigan Army Medical Center serving our soldiers, their families and veterans. “Not only was it very satisfying to serve the military community, but I

I do what I do because a small change can drastically improve someone’s walking, which can lead to a more satisfying and productive home and work life. My education also afforded me extensive training in limb salvage; saving someone’s foot and limb can positively affect their lifespan. Patients are very grateful when you can help them through an event like that. It is a great honor to be a part of their lives in that way.”

FARMING IS THE BACKBONE OF THE MISSISSIPPI DELTA. It has provided thousands of jobs and put food on America’s dinner tables.
W
hen it was discovered that rich, fertile soil was native to Bolivar County, people migrated to the area to plant row after perfect row of corn, cotton, rice, soybeans, wheat and sorghum. It is that same soil that brought the first settlers to the area back in the 1800s, and they never looked back. In the early years, Italians migrated to Bolivar County for sharecropping opportunities and remain some of the biggest farmers in the area today. Most farms are passed down generation to generation, and Bolivar County farmers are a proud, sturdy lot that respect the land they cultivate. It is a tradition and a heritage. In fact, farming remains the backbone of Bolivar County. 124 2022 CLEVELAND WELCOME GUIDE
Agriculture is the No. 1 employer in the Delta. It stands to reason that Bolivar is the top county in terms of acres farmed in the state of Mississippi. While the county does not have the highest number of farmers in the state, Bolivar can boast as being the top producer in many crops. Visitors in agribusiness often comment how the county is home to some of the most savvy producers in the country. Today, Bolivar County is the top-producing county for soybeans, producing between 4,000,001 to 10,000,000 bushels per year. We are also the top-producing county in the state for wheat, harvesting between 1,400, 001 to 3,000,000 bushels yearly. The county can also boast as being the top producer in rice hundredweight, reaching between 2,000,001 and 4,000,000 per year. With plentiful farmland and farmers, one is sure to find agribusiness. Hundreds of locals find employment through numerous fields related to farming. From Ag pilots to chemical sales, the farming industry provides countless jobs and enriches the local economy. Sanders Inc., which is now Simplot, was established in

1953 and called Cleveland its headquarters for many years. Simplot continues the tradition of providing quality agricultural products to farmers in Bolivar County. Having a local office for this national company, continues to benefit the area. Delta & Pine Land, now owned by Monsanto, is a leader in cottonseed production. The company provides its crossbred and genetically engineered cottonseed to agriculture enterprises worldwide. Founded in 1957, Helena Chemical Company has grown to be one of the nation’s foremost distributors of crop protection and crop production inputs and services for agricultural, turf & ornamental, forestry, aquatics and vegetation management markets. Nutrien Ag Solutions is a preferred distributor of the full range of crop protection products. While chemicals and seed are a must on a farm, the equipment is just as important. For over 100 years, Wade Incorporated has been servicing the equipment needs of the Mississippi Delta. Planters Equipment is also an equipment distributer and prides itself on providing farmers with excellent service. The most important reason that the Delta is a mecca for
126 2022 CLEVELAND WELCOME GUIDE
farming is the Mighty Mississippi River. The fourth-longest river in the world contributes to the success of farming in more ways than one. Along with its many tributaries, the river enables the transportation of 316 million net tons of goods per year, including grain. The river basin contains nutrient-rich soil, which lends itself to the success of the Delta farmer. Even with such fertile land, heritage and resources, area farmers are always looking to improve their crops. Each year, the Delta Ag Expo is held in Cleveland with seminars on the latest herbicides and seeds. Those in agribusiness bring information and the latest in combines and other equipment necessary for running a top-notch business. Local farmers have also joined forces with the Mississippi State University Extension Service in Cleveland to maximize research-based information, educational programs and technology. This allows the Delta farmer to make informed decisions about his economic, social and cultural well-being. Roots run deep in the Delta soil when it comes to local farmers. They are dedicated to putting food on American tables and beyond.
WHY
AGRICULTURE IS IMPORTANT Agriculture is important because it provides a way of life for most families here in Bolivar County. There are many different moving parts in the field of agriculture that provide endless career opportunities, which is a great thing for our local community and economy. In my opinion, there isn’t a person in Bolivar county that is not affected in some form by the agriculture industry. – Preston Bowen
Nutrien Ag Solutions
Agriculture plays a role in everyone's daily life. The food we eat, the clothes we wear, the home in which we dwell are all made available to us because of agriculture. – Laura J. Giaccaglia
Bolivar County Coordinator/Agent IV MS State Extension Service
Agriculture is the cornerstone of Bolivar county. The income generated from this industry drives every aspect of the local economy. Ag pilots, farmers, farm laborers, chemical company employees all live here. Their wives work here, and their children attend school here. These people pump money into the schools, restaurants, and other businesses in the local area. The better the Agriculture industry does, the more the county thrives. Simple as that. – Chad Smith
Ag Pilot Shannon Flying Service
I have been in the farming industry my entire working career and continue to do so in my retirement. The whole economy we live in, especially the Delta, revolves around farming and agriculture. It has been such a big part of my life. Watching a crop from planting season to harvest season takes hard work and dedication from our local farmers. I am blessed to have been a part of the ag industry for over fifty years. – Bert Mann

SPORTS IS A MAJOR PART OF THE OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE and community spirit of Cleveland and Bolivar County.
T
he Mississippi Delta is known for many things, including its sports icons that range from football great Archie Manning to Boston Red Sox pitcher, the late Dave "Boo" Ferriss. The Cleveland Park Commission provides many opportunities for local children and adults to get involved in. The CPC offers baseball, softball, coach pitch and t-ball in the spring, and flag football, tackle football, baseall, softball and basketball in the fall. Youth can also participate in soccer which is run by the Cleveland Youth Soccer Association. There’s something to do year-round at Cleveland’s nine parks with playground equipment. There are nineteen ball fields, eight tennis courts and one gymnasium that houses four youth basketball courts, two adult basketball courts and two volleyball courts. It’s always an active summer for local sports with fifty organized baseball teams and twenty-nine softball squads. There are thirty-eight youth basketball teams, and twentyfive youth soccer squads. If pigskin is your passion, Cleveland has eight flag football teams and eight tackle teams.

The Park Commission also operates the East Side Swimming Pool and the Fireman’s Park Wading Pool. Both open around Memorial Day and close at the end of July. For those who like to compete in the pool, the Delta Aquatic Club is the place to be. The group is associated with USA Swimming and has more than thirty-five years of experience in developing swimmers. The Delta Ducks specialize in excellent small-group instruction throughout the year, and of course, jumping in the water is a great way to beat the Delta heat. In addition to the year-round Park Commission athletic programs, Cleveland has a wonderful bowling alley. For those athletes who prefer a more non-traditional approach, there are several options for dance, gymnastics, cheer, and even karate. High school sports are huge in Bolivar County. Cleveland Central High School and Bayou Academy have provided the community with some exciting teams in Cleveland. Teams at McEvans High School in Shaw, West Bolivar High School in Rosedale and Northside High School in Shelby have positively impacted the sports landscape in the county. The teams at these schools have won numerous state championships in many sports which have brought a lot of prestige to Bolivar County. Clevelanders are sure to show up at Delta State University to cheer on the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen. There is always the opportunity in season to catch a good game

on the baseball diamond at Ferriss Field. The Statesmen are consistently one of the best teams in NCAA Division II and have the 2004 National Championship trophy to prove it. DSU baseball dates back to 1933, and the team has been to the College World Series ten times. The Statesmen have also appeared at the NCAA Tournament twenty-six times and have eleven Gulf South Conference Championships with 1,731 league wins. More than sixty former DSU players have seen time in Major League Baseball and forty-nine Statesmen have earned AllAmerican status. The namesake of Delta State’s incredible baseball field is Boston Red Sox Hall-of-Famer Dave “Boo” Ferriss, who started coaching the Statesmen in 1960. Sadly in November of 2016, Coach Ferriss passed away. His legacy will forever be a part of the history of Delta State University. Southerners cannot get enough football, and we especially enjoy watching the Statesmen play at Travis Park Field in Horace McCool Stadium in Cleveland. With a state-of-the-art video board recently installed and artificial turf featuring a patented GeoFlo shock pad and drainage system, the Statesmen always look good. DSU boasts the NCAA Division II National Championship from 2000. In the winter, the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen fans fill the seats of the Walter Sillers Coliseum to watch men's and women's basketball as the teams compete on the Lloyd Clark Court. The Lady Statesmen have earned six nationals championship, three A.I.A.W and three NCAA Division II titles. "The Mother of Modern Women's Collegiate Basketball," Margaret Wade amassed a career record of 465-85 and led DSU to three straight A.I.A.W National Championships. Wade's success was fueled by the play of star center Lusia Harris. Harris was the top player on the Lady Statesmen national championship teams in the 1970s. Harris' success enabled her to lead Team USA to a gold medal in the Pan American Games in 1975 and a silver medal in the Olympics in 1976. Harris is officially the only woman drafted by the NBA as she was picked in the seventh round of the NBA Draft by the New Orleans Jazz in 1977. Unfortunately, Harris passed away on Jan. 18, 2022. An Academy Award nominated documentary on her life titled, "The Queen of Basketball" was released in 2021. Delta State University's swimming and diving programs are among the elite in nation as their swimmers have won six individual NCAA Division II National Championships. DSU has also had success in golf, softball, soccer and cross country. DSU baseball has won fifteen GSC Championships and has appeared in the NCAA Tournament thirty-three times. The Statesmen baseball team has won 2,019 games in their history.
FROM YOUR LOCAL
SPORTS REPORTER Andy Collier Sports Editor, The Bolivar Bullet
I've lived in Cleveland my whole life. I've watched sports since I was a kid. One of the greatest privileges I've ever had is to be able to write sports in the county where I was born. I've gotten a chance to see so many great young players at all levels of athletics. These young people give their teams so much life. The coaches I've gotten a chance to meet have contributed so much to this community. The fans, cheerleaders, band and dance team provide a lot of excitement to the atmosphere at an event. The cheers and the music always gets the blood pumping. Watching sports in the summer time is a blessing as you see many young kids having fun at the parks. There are plenty of sports options in Cleveland and Bolivar County for kids and adults. I've covered young people compete in the swimming pool, tennis court, basketball court, volleyball court, football field, baseball field, etc. I've seen one of our local residents compete for a mixed martial arts championship. The avenues that a person can take to participate in a sport are limitless. Being a sports writer for almost a quarter of a century, I've gotten a chance to see young kids that I've covered grow to be fine upstanding adults that are contributing in a major way to our communities. Sports have always been an important part of Bolivar County, and they continue to impact lives everyday. Anytime you see one of our youth league teams hit the field or high school teams suit up, stop and catch the action. If you want to join a team, don't be afraid to sign-up. The young athletes appreciate all the support they can get. As I continue to cover our athletes, I see many bright futures that have the potential to make this community even better. If you feel like getting away and enjoying the sites, see what games are playing and have some fun. One thing is for sure, Bolivar County is the place to be for great sports. 2022 CLEVELAND WELCOME GUIDE 131

EDUCATION IS THE KEY TO A SUCCESSFUL COMMUNITY and Cleveland continues to support and grow its elementary, middle and high school.
T
he Cleveland School District is made up of ten precollegiate campuses. The district is composed of one high school, Cleveland Central High School, and one middle school, Cleveland Central Middle School, and six elementary schools, Pearman Elementary, Parks Elementary, B.L. Bell Academy, H.M. Nailor Elementary, Hayes Cooper Center and Cypress Park Elementary. Hayes Cooper Center, B.L. Bell Academy, and H.M. Nailor Elementary School are all Magnet Schools. 132 2022 CLEVELAND WELCOME GUIDE
Magnet Schools promote academic opportunity and excellence over their regular counterparts. They offer attractive programs and instructional strategies that are specifically designed to hold the interest of the students and to keep them engaged and actively learning. All students at one of these schools receive the core curriculum enhanced by the magnet school’s theme. In addition, the students have the opportunity to match their interests to the school theme while focusing on excellence in academics. Bolivar County Head Start has six locations in and around the Cleveland area for Preschool age children. This is a Federally funded program that is income based. BCHS is a comprehensive program that ensures that all children are afforded physicals, dental visits, eye exams and speech and hearing screenings. The educational curriculum implemented is aligned with the Mississippi Early Learning
2022 CLEVELAND WELCOME GUIDE 133
Standards and Guidelines and the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework. Also, all the Centers are NAEYC accredited. The Cleveland Career Development and Technology Center also calls the district home. The center caters to the needs of students who are seeking a more hands-on approach to learning. There are also two independent schools in the county, Presbyterian Day School, which is a kindergarten through sixth grade elementary institution, and Bayou Academy, which is for K-3 to 12th grades. In addition, there is a Classical Conversations homeschool community that meets in Cleveland, as well as an organization for all homeschoolers in the area, the Delta Home Educators Association. 134 2022 CLEVELAND WELCOME GUIDE
Learning does not stop at the end of the school day, either, as The Cleveland Depot/Bolivar County Literacy Council is an asset to the community on many levels. A small staff and volunteers work with many area children after school to help further guide them in all areas of study. Adults and teenagers also benefit from the availability of GED and ACT prep classes, giving those who want to further their education a better chance to succeed. A literacy class is available for those who wish to advance their education in classic areas of reading, writing and arithmetic while also being given more modern opportunities to learn technology. A class that teaches English as a second language is also an option and a great example of how the program has grown—and continues to grow.
WHY I LOVE
TEACHING
IN BOLIVAR COUNTY I love teaching in Bolivar County, because Cleveland is my hometown. I love our small town, and being able to teach my friends and fellow classmates children in second grade at Nailor! – Ashley Hardenburgh
H. M. Nailor Elementary School
I have loved being part of the Presbyterian Day School family for forty-one years. During these years, I have had the privilege of seeing former PDS students return as PDS parents and former parents return as PDS grandparents to allow their child/ grandchild to experience the PDS legacy of superior education in a Christian environment. I am proud to be an educator and a PDS Eagle. – Diane Byrd
Presbyterian Day School
I love teaching because it’s exciting. Everyday, I’m given the opportunity to interact with so many curious minds. I love teaching them in a fun and creative way. I love seeing my students learn and progress, and their smiles are priceless. – Katha Brown
CL3 Headstart
I love teaching because I love our students. It’s so exciting to watch our students grow and evolve. I enjoy not only having the opportunity to play a small part in their lives, but I also enjoy learning from them. They inspire me beyond words. Young adults from near and far have the opportunity to attend Delta State University. This four-year university offers numerous bachelor’s and master’s degrees. From teaching and nursing to aviation and music, Delta State University is a mecca for education and preparation for life after college. Mississippi Delta Community College and Coahoma Community College are not located in Bolivar County but are not far away, and many students choose these institutions for their many offerings in the areas of technology. From automotive technology to the culinary arts, these community colleges give two-year intensive training for students.

I love teaching in Rosedale! While I do feel blessed to be able to give back to my community, it has given back so much more to me. There is something so very special about not only knowing my students but to also know their parents and grandparents. The bonds holding the community together are very strong. – Nancy Armstrong

The landing has always been there but a major over-haul has made Terrene Landing an attraction for fisherman, hunters, sightseers, paddlers and of course riverboats! American Queen Voyages added a stop at the landing to their southbound itinerary.

LOCAL
Life
Dockery Plantation is a must-stop destination for visitors to the community. Dockery was once a 25,600-acre thriving cotton plantation and sawmill. Located on the Sunflower River between Ruleville and Cleveland, it is widely regarded as the place where Delta blues music was born. The plantation is now used for a variety of events from music festivals to wedding ceremonies.
Put out the fire! The local volunteer fire departments for both the city and county consist of a great group of brave men who are most definitely equal to the task. That said, they are also willing to step up to the plate when fun is on the agenda. Both departments spend time visiting with school children across the county sharing tips on fire safety.
Deep Roots is a local live music initiative featuring area roots music artists and bands. Put together through the combined efforts of Big Front Porch Productions and the City of Cleveland, these performances celebrate and promote music in the heart of the American Music triangle.
148 2022 CLEVELAND WELCOME GUIDE
Cleveland is an artcentric community and the Mathers-Sanders Sculpture Garden, on the grounds of the Bologna Performing Arts Center, has played a major role in this development. Due to the generosity of many people throughout the years, Delta State has become noted for its permanent collection of sculptures which now numbers more than thirty pieces.
Expansion is not just for big cities. There are several Bolivar County businesses who have taken the plunge to open additional locations. Their success translates into success for the entire community.
They say it takes a village to raise a child. The “village” of Bolivar County is a tight-knit group of residents who never miss the opportunity to support local youth. Small town living at its best!
Let’s put on a show! The greek system at Delta State University is thriving. There are several options for both male and female students and they all strive to make the college experience the best that it can be. Regular shows and performances up the entertainment value and of course their local philanthropy is an asset to the community.
If there is one thing that Delta people love it is a party! Many of the local restaurants in Bolivar County offer extensive catering services. Whether you are needing a small spread for an intimate gathering or a full-blown menu for a bigger affair, caterers in the area have you covered.

LOCAL
Life Delta Arts Alliance, which serves as a bridge to connect diverse cultures through their contributions to the arts, continues to be committed to providing educational programs for the youth of Bolivar County. From dance classes to art lessons the fun never ceases at the Ellis!
The Mighty Mississippi keeps rolling along. Local access to the river creates a variety of entertainment options for Bolivar County residents and visitors. From boating to camping or just sightseeing, there is much to do and see along the bank of and on this majestic body of water. There are nine parks scattered throughout the town of Cleveland and each one provides a unique opportunity to play, relax, be one with nature, or just read a book!
Shopping and sippin’ is always a fun time. In conjunction with the Cleveland Main Street association, downtown merchants have a few “wine down town” events each year. Shoppers have the opportunity to browse each stores selections and also enjoy a tasty beverage.

Remnants of days gone by. Po’Monkey’s was once a happening hot spot until the death of operator Willie “Po’ Monkey” Seaberry in 2016. The juke joint was founded in the early 1960s and was one of the last rural juke joints in the Delta before closing. While closed to the public, the structure still stands and is on the Mississippi Blues Trail marker tour.
Furry friends are always welcome! The local shopping experience in Cleveland is certainly unique. You never know who you may encounter to help you make your selections. Business owners are dedicated to knowing their customers and creating a personal connection.
Downtown Cleveland is beautiful in all seasons. It is easy to find the perfect spot for a photo opportunity. The green strip is on the location of the former tracks of the Illinois Central Railroad. On either side of the “strip” is Cotton Row and Sharpe Avenue. Both are filled with quaint shops and restaurants.
The Wiley Planetarium, located on the campus of Delta State University is the only planetarium associated with a college or university campus across the state. In addition to enabling students to study astronomy, the facility is used to put on programs for local school children and shows for the general public. If you are a “stargazer” you don’t want to miss this experience!

SERVING THE
Community
THE CLEVELAND VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT, where volunteers cover our city, is a great community asset.
R
esidents of Cleveland sleep soundly at night knowing the volunteer fire department is guarding the gates. For nearly 100 years, this volunteer fire department has responded to calls at all hours of the day or night, leaving families at the dinner table, children on the baseball field or even the comfort of a good night’s sleep, all to keep the citizens of Cleveland safe. Over the years, these volunteers have received high marks from the state, including Fire Department of the Year and numerous individual awards. 152 2022 CLEVELAND WELCOME GUIDE
The fire department is, and always has been, very supportive of community projects. The department started the first little league baseball program. This league has grown into what is now the City of Cleveland Park Commission. The department bought property and filled in the area with many loads of dirt to form the city park now known as Fireman’s Park.
The new city and county facilities are located across from each other on South street. These state-of-the-art buildings have been a great asset to the city and county since they opened in 2020.
THE BOLIVAR COUNTY VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CHARTERED with the Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office in 1974. The department has stations in Cleveland, Scott, Gunnison and Duncan.
T
oday, the Bolivar County Volunteer Fire Department services 928 square miles, including the communities of Shaw, Boyle, Renova, Merigold, Duncan, Alligator, Gunnison, Beulah, Benoit, Scott, Round Lake, Symmond, Rosedale, Shelby, and Pace. Approximately eighty-five volunteers staff thirteen engines, five water tankers, two rescue trucks, three brush fire trucks and a ladder truck. The department answers approximately 320-350 calls annually. Calls can be for just about any type of emergency imaginable: farm equipment rescue, gas leaks, building fires, airplane crashes, barge fires on the Mississippi River, automobile accidents with entrapment, and grass/field fires. 2022 CLEVELAND WELCOME GUIDE 153
B
ordering Communities MOUND BAYOU
One of the nation’s most historic African American culture sites is Mound Bayou, the oldest town in America founded by former slaves. Mound Bayou was founded in 1887 by ex-slaves Isaiah T. Montgomery and Benjamin T. Green. Montgomery’s home still stands nearby as a monument to the enterprise of newly freed slaves; the structure is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. On the grounds of Mound Bayou’s City Hall is a carved wooden plaque depicting famous black Americans. Mound Bayou is also home to the creative artisans at Peter’s Pottery. Started in 1998 by the four Woods brothers, the studio has produced pottery for fans worldwide.
DUNCAN
Duncan is home to old structures that once were the life’s blood of the town. History and a storied past highlight this small city north of Cleveland.
SHAW
ROSEDALE
This riverside town was made famous in Cream’s classic hit “Crossroads” as being the actual spot where Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil, and some historians believe this is the fabled spot. The historic Rosedale courthouse recently underwent renovations to restore it to its former glory. Bolivar County has two county seats, one in Cleveland and one in Rosedale. The presentday courthouses were both originally built in the early 1920's. 154 2022 CLEVELAND WELCOME GUIDE
Shaw is a city in both Bolivar and Sunflower counties. The name was derived from an old Indian tribe that settled northeast of the region. Shaw gained national attention in 1971 when a group of local residents led by Andrew Hawkins sued the town for violating their Fourteenth Amendment right to equal protection under the law. The Circuit Court ruled in favor of the plaintiffs and ordered Shaw to equalize access to public services such as fire hydrants, water mains, sewers and street paving.
ALLIGATOR
This rural community lies off of the blues music thoroughfare, Highway 61. Many residents choose Alligator, not for its unique name, but for the quiet living it affords. It is also popular for tourists in search of the Alligator mural, painted by Delta State art professor Cetin Oguz.
WINSTONVILLE
BENOIT
This small town, located along Scenic Highway 1, is not only known for its proximity to the river, but also as the location for the cult-classic film, Baby Doll, which was shot on Hollywood Plantation at the Burrus House, right. This is the only remaining antebellum home in Bolivar County, and was just recently restored to grandeur.
This area was once home to the Harlem Inn, where acts such as Ike and Tina Turner, B.B. King and Little Milton came to rock the house. Unfortunately, the Harlem Inn is no longer, but the spot where it once stood is marked on the Mississippi Blues Trail.
SHELBY
The town of Shelby may be small, but it’s large in soul. This close-knit community produced such great musicians as Mississippi Slim and Erma Franklin, sister of Aretha Franklin, jazz great Gerald Wilson, as well as famed bluesman Henry Townsend, for whom there is a Blues Trail marker in his honor.
MERIGOLD
To the north of Cleveland lies the small town of Merigold, home to Crawdad’s Restaurant and the world-famous McCartys Pottery, started by Lee and Pup McCarty. 2022 CLEVELAND WELCOME GUIDE 155

CIVIL RIGHTS & THE Blues
The Delta Blues has many roots in Cleveland and Bolivar County, with stops along famous roadways like the “Blues Highway,” Highway 61, as well as the Great River Road, Highway 1. Many of these unique towns contain Mississippi Blues Trail markers that tell the story of how the blues influenced the world.

Henry "Mule" Townsend, the only blues artist that recorded every decade from the 1920s to the 2000s, was born in Shelby on October 27, 1909. A longtime resident of St. Louis, where he was hailed as a patriarch of the local blues scene, Townsend died on September 24, 2006. A master guitarist and pianist, he played an integral role in the vital St. Louis blues scene of the 1920s, ’30s, and ’40s.
Bolivar County has deep roots in the civil rights movement, and is home to two of the Mississippi Freedom Trail markers that tell the story of the civil rights movement in the county.
TRAVELING THE RIVERSIDE BLUES HIGHWAY 1 MARKERS (NORTH TO SOUTH)
Charley Patton called Dockery Farms home, and you can still visit the historic grounds today. B.B. King said if he could name one place where the blues started, it was Dockery Farms. Located on Highway 8 just five miles East of Cleveland.

THE AMZIE MOORE HOME
Amzie Moore was a leader “a civil rights giant” in the civil rights movement in Mississippi. After serving in World War II, he co-founded the Regional Council of Negro Leadership, helped organize the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in Mississippi, and was the first president of the Cleveland NAACP. His home was used as a “revolving dormitory” and “safe house” for activists during the movement’s voterregistration drives in the 1960s. His many guests included Fannie Lou Hamer, Medgar Evers, Dr. Martin Luther King, Andrew Young, John Lewis, Thurgood Marshall, and Rev. Jesse Jackson. 614 SOUTH CHRISMAN AVENUE CLEVELAND
The rich Italian heritage of the Mississippi Delta was recently acknowledged with the placement of a historic marker in Bolivar County.
T.R.M. HOWARD The White Front Cafe, located in the Delta town of Rosedale, is a small historic storefront with a Blues Trail Marker out front. The cafe is a great spot for hot tamales—and hot tamales ONLY.
Theodore Roosevelt Mason Howard was a surgeon in Mound Bayou who founded the Regional Council of Negro Leadership, Mississippi’s preeminent civil rights organization in the 1950s. He served as a mentor to Amzie Moore, Medgar Evers, Fannie Lou Hamer, Jesse Jackson and more. He played a prominent role in the investigation of the murder and kidnapping of Emmett Till.
