There is no doubt 2024 was a challenging year for Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio.
Due to shifts in our funding, we were forced to downsize at the start of the 2024-2025 school year to ensure sustainability and effectiveness. We ended 2024 with fewer employees and Clubs than we had at the start of the year.

At the same time, there were so many positive developments, led by donors like you.
Philanthropic funding – an increasingly important part of our budget – was up 8%, thanks to the supporters who rallied around our Clubs when they learned about the cuts in government funding. This included help from media partners like WKYC, which, with partners Oswald Companies and the Callahan Foundation, staged a telethon that raised $200,000 for BGCNEO.
We also had a record-setting year for volunteers (780) and volunteer hours served (3,398).
In addition, we were also able to stabilize our budget and operations, thanks to your generosity. In uncertain times, we lean on things that have been stable. BGCNEO is one of those entities.

CLEVELAND GUARDIANS MAKE STRONG PITCH FOR OUR CLUB KIDS
The Cleveland Guardians were successful on the field in 2024, winning the Central Division title and going to the playoffs. The baseball team, and Cleveland Guardians Charities, were also champions when it came to supporting the youth of Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio.
The team has a rich history of supporting our Clubs. Last year was no exception.
The Guardians were among the first Corporate Champions in our campaign to garner additional support for BGCNEO in the business community, making a $100,000 gift. In addition, Alex King, the team’s Executive Vice President, Marketing & Brand Strategy and a BGCNEO board member, is co-leading the corporate campaign as it heads into its second full year. “We are dedicated to improving communities across Northeast Ohio by providing resources to organizations like BGCNEO, a leader in youth programming,” King said.
We were also honored to be named as one of the recipients of proceeds from the sixth annual Cleveland Guardians Charities Giveathon, which is part of CLE Inspires Week.
Our youth were able to take part in several activities at Progressive Field. Guardians pitcher Triston McKenzie once again invited Club kids down on the field for Friday Night Fireworks. Our Clubs participated in the Bob Feller Foundation’s character and leadership program, Champions of Valor, and members Ayden and King’Jovon were honored on the field before a Guardians game.
At the year’s end, Guardians Charities committed to awarding $15,000 in scholarship money to the two top finishers in the 2025 BGCNEO Youth of the Year competition. Guardians Director of Community Impact Penny Forster served as a judge for the contest.

cleveland teen leads by following her values
For a group of teenage girls, the timing could not have been much worse.
Cleveland’s East Tech High School volleyball team learned its tournament match against a suburban powerhouse was scheduled for the same day as Homecoming. Captain Ty’Janeya Gordon knew her team would lose big. There was talk of skipping the match. But doing so would jeopardize the school’s eligibility to compete in state-sanctioned tournaments in other sports.
And there was an even bigger issue – pride.
So Ty’Janeya, 18, rallied her team. They would play. Hair and nail appointments were rescheduled. Homecoming ETAs were delayed.
“We were not going to let the school down, and we were going to have fun,” Ty’Janeya says.
That is the kind of leadership that made Ty’Janeya the 2025 Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio Youth of the Year. She has been a standout at BGCNEO’s East Tech Teen Center , where she serves as president of the Keystone Club leadership group and co-led three community service projects. Ty’Janeya, who will attend Central State University and study accounting, was also student coordinator for a 2023 clothes drive benefiting the City Mission. She belonged to the King Kennedy Club before going to high school.
“The Club is like a family to me,” she says.
Back to that volleyball match. Ty’Janeya says while her team got clobbered, they played hard, had fun and earned respect from their opponents. And what about that Homecoming dance?
“It was good. I was late, though,” she says with a laugh.

More than just a job: She’s a dedicated donor
Giving back is nothing new for Shelly Johnson.
The Kalamazoo, Michigan native says as a child she learned about generosity from her father, a General Motors employee who supported local charities and his church. Today, Shelly is not only a Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio employee but also a recurring donor.
“My father was a giver. It is in my DNA,” says Shelly, who is BGCNEO’s Senior Director of Human Resources and a 22-year Club staffer.
Shelly is one of a growing number of donors who make recurring gifts to BGCNEO through regular monthly, quarterly, annual or semi-annual payments. They are part of Friends of the Club, a new recurring donor society whose dedicated members provide the Clubs with reliable revenue. In addition, the program helps the donor to remember to make a gift.
Shelly is not the only member of her family with ties to Boys & Girls Clubs. Husband Steve was a Club member in Kalamazoo and their son Steve II belonged to Clubs in Cuyahoga County. Shelly would sometimes volunteer at the Club after leaving work. “I got to see my son form relationships with the staff and with other kids,” she says. “Being in the Club, you build memories and see so many amazing things. It committed me to the mission.”
During her career, Shelly has seen Boys & Girls Clubs change lives. She has seen young people win scholarships, go to college, graduate and earn good jobs. She has seen the power of mentorship. She has seen so many positive changes in kids who just needed a chance.
“How,” she asks, “can you not buy into that?”

Coriyon leads by example.
Akron teen’s actions speak louder than words
The 13-year-old LeBron James Club member isn’t outspoken or flashy. He simply understands his role as one of the Club’s older members – showing others how to act responsibly.
“I have a positive attitude and follow the rules,” he says.
Coriyon, a seventh grader at Akron Preparatory School, has been a Club member for two years. At the Club, he enjoys video games, art, listening to music and playing basketball. He has also developed a love of African Drumming after joining the Club’s Opening Track music program.
Club Director Kapree Hullum says Coriyon is a role model for others.
“A lot of the younger kids look up to him,” she says. “Coriyon models the kind of behavior we want to see in all our kids. He is kind and respectful to others.”
Coriyon says he encourages other young people to join the Club.
“Here, you can learn new things and make new friends,” he says. “And it is fun.”
SPOTLIGHT ON SAVE OUR CLUBS CAMPAIGN
Media coverage shows need, donors show their support
When BGCNEO faced a loss of funding in 2024, we let the community know. Media coverage of the challenges facing our Clubs resulted in Northeast Ohio residents and businesses rallying around the Save Our Clubs campaign.
Cleveland’s FOX 8 did live ‘Kickin’ It With Kenny’ segments all morning from our Broadway Club during our Week of Giving and asked viewers to donate. Host Kenny Crumpton gave kids and staff members the chance to showcase activities ranging from music to athletics to literacy.
WKYC Studios’ telethon, called Boys & Girls Clubs Day of Giving 2024, sponsored by Oswald Companies, was a huge success. The event raised $200,000 from 250 donors. Oswald Companies sponsored the telethon and donated $10,000; the Callahan Foundation provided a $50,000 match.
Online donors sent us encouraging messages. “Keep up the great work in supporting our youth!” wrote one. Another commented, ”God bless you all for providing education, recreation and a safe place for children.”
The telethon led to an ongoing WKYC segment called Boys & Girls Clubs Celebrity Knockout Challenge, a monthly feature launched in late 2024 that pits local celebrities against each other and Club kids in a basketball contest hosted by Mike Polk Jr. Celebrities have included Guardians outfielder Jhonkensey ‘Big Christmas’ Noel, Cavs legend Campy Russell, Random Acts of Kindness Everywhere founder Ricky Smith and the band Tropidelic.

At the Club, language is no barrier for sisters
Brenda Mercado points to an interactive whiteboard showing a math problem.
Mercado, a youth development professional at BGCNEO’s Frank Jacinto Club in Lorain, asks her younger members, “What is 5+6?” The screen has multiple options. Katherine, 7, must choose.
She touches the correct answer, delighting her fellow Club members.
“Eleven, yes!” one says. “Once, bueno!” adds another.
A smiling Katherine returns to her seat and immediately strikes up a conversation in Spanish with her sister Yadira, 6. Both are learning to be bilingual, although at different speeds.
“I am better at English than (Katherine) is, and she is better at Spanish than I am,” Yadira says through translator Mercado, the Club’s literacy lead. Yadira was born in the United States, Katherine in Mexico; Their parents speak only Spanish, so learning English is a challenge.
Academic success is one of BGCNEO’s pillars, and in some Clubs that means bridging language barriers. Frank Jacinto is one of those Clubs. Director Jodalys Miranda says she and three other staff members are bilingual, making conversations more comfortable for kids of Latino heritage.
Miranda says the girls are thriving at the Club.
“Katherine is very bright, funny and loves to help,” she says. “Yadira loves coming to Club and participates in everything. We love having them.”
SPOTLIGHT ON volunteering
bridge board members make great connection with club kids
The Bridge Board of Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio, a young professionals group, doesn’t just advocate for our kids – its members show up regularly at Clubs, work hard and have fun.
It is not hyperbole to say Bridge Board members have a genuine connection with our Club kids. In 2024, the group focused on the King Kennedy Club in Cleveland, finding fun, interactive and educational activities to engage with the members. Some sessions were centered around special occasions like Halloween and St. Patrick’s Day; others were just opportunities to spend time with the kids.
“The Bridge Board has been such a delight to work with,” says BGCNEO Manager of Volunteer Engagement Adria Chavers. “At their core, the Club members are the reason they join the board.”
The Bridge Board is a forward-thinking and active group of young professionals who have a passion for helping Northeast Ohio’s youth. Its members interact with Club kids, organize fundraisers and lend their skills to BGCNEO. Members also take part in a variety of networking opportunities with other professionals in the region. We value this group’s commitment.
2024 was a record-setting year for volunteerism at BGCNEO. We had 780 individual volunteers and 3,398 volunteer hours served – both high-water marks for the organization.

The Club is helping teen rise above tough times
Jason, 15, embodies resiliency.
A tumultuous early childhood – one involving frequent moves, a fractured family life and bullying by his peers –left Jason feeling bad about himself. At one point, he saw no reason to keep living. Then he enlisted the help of friends, adult mentors and his Boys & Girls Club family,
And Jason found a way forward.
Today, the Sandusky Teen Center member and St. Mary Catholic High School ninth grader is a happier, more outgoing person with a group of trusted friends and an eye toward the future. He says his Boys & Girls Club experience has played no small part his personal turnaround.
“The Club helped by giving me adults who understood me and the importance of mental health,” Jason says. “I have friends and mentors who talk to me. Before this, I didn’t feel I fit in.”
Jason, who finished second in the 2025 Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio Youth of the Year competition, has become a passionate spokesperson for mental health, especially as it pertains to boys. “A lot of kids do not want to talk about it because they don’t want to seem weak,” he says.
His plans include going to college and then to trade school to learn blacksmithing, a vocation in which he became interested while exploring careers for a class project. For now, he loves being part of a teen center family that listens to him and cares about him.
“The Club ensures that everyone feels included and happy,” he says.
