Growing up, I was a Club kid. I have now been in the Boys & Girls Clubs Movement for more than 30 years. Clubs work -- we offer fun, safe places for kids ages 6-18 to go after school with activities ranging from music to athletics. We offer kids a daily meal. And there is no cost to families.
We can do this because of the support of individuals, foundations, companies, government agencies and other partners around the region.
As we navigate the uncertainties of the post-COVID era, I am grateful for your investment in our Clubs. Thanks so much for supporting BGCNEO.

Parker Hannifin makes big commitment to our youth
Parker Hannifin is a Fortune 250 global leader in motion and control technologies and systems. It is also making a difference in the lives of youth right here in Northeast Ohio.
Parker and its employees have made a major commitment to Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio, completing a volunteer playground upgrade project at our Elyria South Club in 2023 and launching an employee giving program with a company match. In addition, Parker made a significant corporate gift to BGCNEO that helped provide safe, fun places for kids after school.
Companies like Parker help kids thrive.
We are grateful for the businesses, both large and small, that invest in BGCNEO, allowing us to continue delivering life-changing programs to the young people we serve. Companies supporting BGCNEO are enabling us to grow the next generation of workforce leaders in Northeast Ohio.
Such partnerships are also important to workers: One study showed 71% of employees say it is very important to work for an employer that supports a culture of giving and volunteering. Another showed that 87% of consumers are more likely to buy a product from a company that advocates for a social issue they care about.

Youth of the Year inspires others with determination, perseverance
Jayde Gowitzka calls it “my normal.”
It is not what others see. They see a kid born with cerebral palsy who defied the odds, literally teaching herself to use the right side of her body when her brain tells her she can’t. They see someone who overcame family trauma to become a leader. They see a para athlete who won state swimming titles in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke events.
“I realize my obstacles were something that I consider normal, like not being able to walk until age 5 or learning how to ride a bicycle at age 10 instead of 5,” says Jayde, 18, of Sandusky.
Jayde has been an inspiration to her community and to fellow members of BGCNEO’s Sandusky Teen Center, where she is president of the Keystone Club leadership group and part of the SMART Girls healthy lifestyles initiative. Teen Center Director Allysa Powell says Jayde “has overcome many obstacles to get where she is today and has allowed nothing to stop her.” Jayde says, “My Club is my second family. Without that family, I would not be the person I am today. The mentors I have had on my journey have made such a positive impact on my life.”
In addition to her swimming honors, Jayde was named BGCNEO’s 2024 Youth of the Year and finished second in the statewide YOY competition. Outside of the Club, she holds down a job and volunteers at community, church and senior citizen events. One of her notable volunteer activities was applying makeup to cancer patients for an event called Confident Beauty.
She plans to attend the University of Akron and study psychology.
Jayde’s favorite quote is from Paralympian swimmer Jessica Long: “It’s great to be number one, but it’s even greater to inspire people.”
It is safe to say Jayde has done just that.
Spotlight on individual giving
Bachmanns’ generosity is rooted in life experiences
Mark and Carol Bachmann know how big families work.
Mark grew up in a household with 12 kids. Carol had five siblings. So when the couple immersed themselves in the inclusive culture of Boys & Girls Clubs, they knew just what to do.
“In any big family, you take responsibility for those around you,” says Mark, partner at the Cleveland-based Marcus Thomas advertising firm. “You also learn early on that the world doesn’t revolve around you. We’ve always volunteered and gotten involved and felt really responsible -- I’ll call it a responsibility -- for people that were in arm’s reach of you. Our arms have just gotten longer as we’ve built circles of work, friends and family and so forth.”
Carol says, “The earlier the intervention the better. And if you can make a difference in a young person’s life they will reap the reward and the benefit throughout their life. The more impact you can have while they’re young, the more beneficial it is to them as well as to society.”
Mark’s involvement with the Clubs started 15 years ago with a casual invitation from a friend. Marcus Thomas was working with the Heinen’s grocery chain when Co-President Tom Heinen mentioned he was headed to a Boys & Girls Club. He asked if Mark wanted to come along with him.
“I took a tour of the Club and, well, you just fall in love with all that’s going on there,” Mark says.
He became one of the Club’s strongest supporters, generously giving his time and money to the Clubs. Mark chaired the board of directors for the former Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland, played a key role in the Save Our Kids fundraising campaign, became a frequent visitor to the King Kennedy Club and was instrumental in the success of the 2019 merger that created Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio. Mark is now serving as BGCNEO’s board vice chair.
Mark says there is an overarching reason to support the Clubs.
“First off, these are our kids -- they belong to all of us,” he says. “And they’re members of all our families. We have a responsibility. We have an opportunity for these kids to accomplish all they’re capable of.”
Compassionate teen
member has his mind set on a great future
For a 17-year-old, Jaylen has very specific plans for his future.
The affable member of Cleveland’s John Adams Teen Center intends to graduate from high school, go to Michigan State University, serve a stint in the U.S. Army and ultimately become a veterinarian.
And not just your typical animal doctor.
“I want to be a traveling veterinarian so I can go to people instead of them coming to me,” he says. “I really love animals – all animals, really – and helping them would bring me a lot of joy.”
In the meantime, Jaylen has become a standout student and Boys & Girls Club member. Teen Center Director Jo’Vohna Hughes says he “makes time for all the things he loves, including the Club.” He is both artistic and athletic, playing third base for his high school baseball team.
Jaylen says he was shy when he first came to the Club more than a year ago.
“Now,” he says with a laugh, “everybody knows me. I’ve made so many friends here. They are family.”
Jaylen loves helping others, whether it is assisting other Club members or volunteering to deliver messages for the high school front office staff. One thing about our future traveling veterinarian seems clear.
He is going places.
Spotlight on volunteering
Cleveland Clinic lends a helping hand to youth
In 2023, our volunteer program fully reopened after two years of pandemic-related bans and restrictions. Volunteers responded in record numbers: 563 people donated 2,140 hours of their time.
One of the most active organizations in terms of volunteering was the Cleveland Clinic. Seven groups of Clinic employees volunteered at our Clubs, beautifying outdoor spaces, working with Club members, deep cleaning buildings and helping with a program called Triple Play, which addresses the mind, body and soul. Forty-six Clinic volunteers spent nearly 120 hours at our Clubs.
Many companies allow employees to volunteer for a Day of Caring. It is a win-win for BGCNEO’s kids and the employees: Our members benefit from the assistance and corporate volunteers enjoy the camaraderie that comes with volunteering together.
We welcome individual volunteers as well as those from corporate groups. Projects include anything from cleaning up the grounds at a Club to helping register attendees at one of our events. We are now seeking volunteers for our homework help program, Power Hour, and Ready Readers Plus literacy improvement initiative.
Creative teen says Club culture encourages her to follow her dreams
When Airyonah, 17, considers her future, she remembers her dad’s advice.
“He always tells me, ‘Whatever it is you choose to do, you should love it,’” she says. “Because if you don’t love it, you will eventually lose interest in it. I try to keep that advice in mind.”
Airyonah loves creativity, and her dream is to own a business in which she designs and makes clothing. At Akron’s Steve Wise Club, the place where Airyonah has been going after school for 10 years, the staff and Club members inspire her to pursue her passion for fashion.
“Here, everyone encourages you to follow your dream,” says Airyonah, a junior at Archbishop Hoban High School in Akron.
“Everything is positive – no negativity. The Club is a place where you can get away from anything bad in your life. For me, the Club is like having another family.”
Airyonah made the transition from traditional Club member to youth development professional, a part-time job in which she helps supervise kids at Steve Wise. Club Director Eboni Harris says she has gone from a quiet teen to a leader: “I think she could name every parent and member who walks through our doors…She is a great inspiration to everyone she meets.”
Her leadership skills are one reason why she was one of a handful of teens chosen to advocate for Boys & Girls Clubs at the National Day of Advocacy in Washington, D.C. and at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus. “I came away feeling that, as a young person, I had been listened to. And I learned that I can do more things than I thought I could do,” she says.
In 2024, she was also a finalist in BGCNEO’s Youth of the Year competition.
But the little things are what really inspires Airyonah.
“Every time I walk in the building, I feel amazing,” she says. “It is something about being able to make the kids happy by just showing up.”

Did you see BGCNEo in the news?
From Club openings to state awards, Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio made headlines in 2023. We believe in telling our story – and doing so in a way in which it is compelling to cover it.
BGCNEO was featured in dozens of news stories during 2023.
Notable coverage included a WEWS story on a Cleveland Charge basketball camp at Cleveland’s King Kennedy Club, one attended by Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb. At the event, the team did skill training and unveiled the mayor’s own bobblehead, which was dubbed a Bibblehead.
In the spring, numerous outlets reported on the success of Sandusky’s Samarion Newell, who was named both BGCNEO and Ohio Boys & Girls Clubs Youth of the Year. In addition, Samarion wrote an insightful column for cleveland.com and Sun News. A summer highlight included The Morning Journal’s coverage of a STEM event at our Ely Elementary Club in Elyria in which NASA Glenn Research Center and COSI treated members to an afternoon of science, propulsion and clouds-making.
At the start of the school year, The Star Beacon wrote about the opening of our first Club in Ashtabula County. And during the holiday season, media outlets covered a Bigger Than Basketball event coordinated by the Cleveland Cavaliers and Cleveland-Cliffs involving 100 Club kids. The main speaker was Cavs point guard Darius Garland.
One taste of Club culture gave him an appetite for more
Eight years ago, Izaya’s older brother and sister came home every day talking about all the fun they were having at Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio’s Desich Family Campus in Lorain.
His interest was piqued.
“I wanted to see what it was all about,” he says.
He did. And it was everything his siblings said it was. Ever since then, Izaya, now 14, has been a fixture at the Club, taking part in activities ranging from basketball to E-sports to STEM projects. Club Director Alex Rivera calls Izaya “a kid who makes the most of what the Club has to offer.”
Izaya says the Club has helped him develop better social skills.
“When I was younger, I really didn’t know anyone,” he says. “It was hard for me. When I started coming to the Club, I made so many new friends. It has been such a great experience.”
He adds, “The Club is a nice, safe place – and it’s fun. We have a good time.”
Izaya attends Lorain Southview High School, where he gets mostly As and Bs. He is proud of his Hispanic heritage and wants to further embrace it by learning Spanish. He says while his parents speak the language fluently, “they don’t speak to (me and my siblings) in Spanish. I know a little (Spanish) but I really want to learn it.”
Izaya says he looks forward to coming to the Club each day.
“This place is pretty cool – awesome, really,” he says.
