OUR MISSION To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

why our clubs are a good investment Our Clubs are ready to take the next leap forward.

In 2022, we started taking the steps needed to reach our ambitious strategic goals, which include doubling the number of kids we serve. In addition, we had a change at the top when I was named to succeed Jeff Scott, who skillfully guided us through a merger and a pandemic.

One thing that did not change – and has not in my more than 30 years in the Boys & Girls Clubs Movement – is our commitment to being the best youth-serving organization in Northeast Ohio. We offer fun, safe places for kids ages 6-18 to go after school. We offer activities ranging from music to athletics. We offer kids a daily meal.

And there is no cost to families.

We could not do this without the support of individuals, foundations, companies, government agencies and other partners around the region.

The return on investment is excellent. A University of Michigan study showed that for every dollar invested in Boys & Girls Clubs, $9.60 in benefits are returned to the community. In a region with one of the highest child poverty rates in the nation, those benefits are life-savers for families.

2022 WAS A YEAR Of PROGRESS TOWARD OUR STRATEGIC GOALS Our Clubs provide safe, fun places for kids ages 6-18 after school -- the most critical time of day for youth. We spent much of 2022 implementing a strategic plan that focuses on serving more children in Northeast Ohio, deepening community roots and bolstering our programming.

Here are some of the steps we’ve taken:

Neighborhood focus: We created smaller regional hubs with an area director overseeing each group. This restructuring, along with several communications initiatives, are helping our Clubs better connect with the surrounding communities.

Invest in life-changing programs: BGCNEO invested in programs such as Opening Track, career readiness, teen initiatives and STEM, providing kids with a deeper experience in those areas.

Serve more kids: In our quest to double the number of kids served by 2025, we increased the number of Clubs to 50 by the year’s end. We now have more than 7,000 Club members.

‘NO DRAMA’ CLUB LEADER

FINDS JOY IN OPPORTUNITIES For Aubrey, 12, the Wellington McCormick Middle School Club is like a smorgasbord.

“I like to try new things and see what I enjoy,” she says. “There are so many things for us to do here. I love the arts, and here I get to express myself through painting and sculpting. I love it.”

For Aubrey and the other members, the Club menu is extensive. In addition to the visual art offerings, there is the Opening Track music program. There is Power Hour -- the time right after school where kids can do homework or study -- recreation in the gym or outside and a hot meal.

Aubrey says her mother, a hospital worker, sees the Club as “really helpful, a great opportunity for me to learn new things.”

Club Director Chloe Brown says Aubrey has become a Club leader.

“With Aubrey, there is no drama,” Brown says. “She is kind to the other members and is always willing to help them. She is a really good team player. I have seen her really grow in her willingness to help and to jump at new opportunities. It is gratifying to see that in a Club member.”

Aubrey says the Club has become an important part of her life.

“Every day,” she says, “I look forward to it.”

NEW CLEVELANDER THRIVES WITH THE HELP OF THE CLUB Joel, 11, spent the first 10 years of his life living in Puerto Rico. When his family moved to Cleveland last year, the enthusiastic Gallagher Middle School Club member hit the ground running.

Literally.

He joined We Run This City, a nonprofit collaboration that trains young people to compete in one of the races at the Union Home Mortgage Cleveland Marathon. Joel embraced the training sessions and competed in the 5-kilometer race, finishing an impressive 29th in his age group.

Club Director Zuhail Nieves is not surprised that Joel was up to the challenge.

“He is one of those kids who loves doing everything,” she says. “He’s a really good kid who participates in all of our programs here. He loves running and the arts, and he even helps out with the little ones.”

One of those little ones is sister Kimberly, 9, who is honing her English skills in the Club’s Ready Readers Plus program and occasionally needs her brother to translate to Spanish.

When asked which language is tougher to learn – ¿Que es mas dificil, ingles o español? – he breaks into a smile. “English isn’t that hard,” Joel says.

The Club has been an anchor for Joel and his family since their arrival in Cleveland. He says he looks forward to the Club after school every day because there are so many different things to do.

“We have so much fun here, and I have made a lot of friends,” he says. “I love going to the Club every day.”

TALENTED TEEN GAINS CONFIDENCE THROUGH EXPERIENCE AT THE CLUB You might say Taylyn, 15, found her voice at the Club.

She was brilliant in the classroom, sporting a 3.8 grade point average. She became a rising star on the basketball court, earning playing time on her high school varsity team as a freshman.

None of that helped Taylyn overcome what she describes as her closed-off nature.

But the Club experience did. At Akron’s LeBron James Clubhouse, Taylyn not only took part in all the activities but also started opening up to her mentors and to other kids. She became more confident, more willing to share her feelings. Club Director Bryanna George soon recognized Taylyn as an emerging leader and made her a junior youth development professional.

“The Club is like my second home,” Taylyn says. “It is my safe place. It has allowed me to open up and be myself. It is my joy. Before, I was just this quiet, smart kid who kept to herself.”

Taylyn’s newfound confidence was evident in Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio’s 2023 Youth of the Year competition. She finished second to eventual Ohio Youth of the Year Samarion Newell but in the process impressed judges and audience members with her poise.

Taylyn wants to play basketball in college and possibly become a psychologist. She says that career would be in line with how friends and Club members see her – as a person who is a good listener.

“People,” she says with a smile, “feel free to come to me with their problems.”

STATE YOUTH OF THE YEAR WINNER TURNS POTENTIAL INTO SUCCESS Jerome Johnson remembers his first impression of Samarion Newell.

“I think he was 12 years old, and I’m thinking, ‘This is a kid who can be whatever he wants to be in life,” says Johnson, then the dean of Sandusky middle schools and now a BGCNEO area director.

Flash forward six years. Samarion, now 18, graduated from Sandusky High School, where he was a three-sport athlete and an honor student, and was named the 2023 Ohio Boys & Girls Clubs Youth of the Year. He earned college credits in high school and worked in the city of Sandusky’s finance department. He is headed to Cleveland State University in the fall.

Along the way, his infectious personality endeared him to the community.

“The Boys & Girls Club isn’t just a place – it is a culture,” Samarion says. “You learn that different households have different ways. You see different people from different environments.”

The Club experience, he says, was invaluable.

“Growing up in the Club and being around great role models is one of the best things that ever happened to me because it taught me valuable lessons and skills,” Samarion says. “I would be a completely different person if it wasn’t for the Boys & Girls Club. They taught me the importance of being a great friend, leader and an even better human being.”
