ACADEMIC REGALIA
THE UNIVERSITY MACE
The Cleveland State University mace is a memorial to Ethel A. Gould and was presented to the University by her daughter, Betty, who was the wife of Dr. Walter B. Waetjen, president of the University from 1973–1988. The mace was first used in 1978 at ceremonies commemorating the opening of the College of Law building and honoring H.R.H. Prince Charles, Prince of Wales. Originally a part of chivalric armor, the mace has become a traditional symbol of authority carried in ceremonial processions.
THE CAP
The academic cap is a sign of the freedom of scholarship and endows the wearer with new scholarship responsibilities and dignities. Old poetry suggests that the cap of scholarship is square to symbolize a book, although some authorities claim that the mortar board is the symbol of masons, a privileged guild.
THE GOWN
The flowing gown comes from the 12th century. It has become symbolic of the democracy of scholarship, for it completely covers any dress of rank or social standing underneath. It is black for all degrees. The bachelor gowns are untrimmed. The master gowns are faced with velvet in front and the doctoral gown includes three bars of velvet across the sleeves in the color distinctive of the faculty or discipline to which the degree pertains.
THE HOOD
The hood is an inverted shield with one or more chevrons of a secondary color on the background of the primary color of the college. The color of the facing of the hood denotes the discipline represented by the degree; the color of the lining of the hood designates the university or college that granted the degree.
THE TASSEL
Colored tassels are worn only by preference and should be worn draped over the right front quarter of the cap for undergraduate candidates and the left front quarter of the cap for graduate and doctoral candidates.
