program highlights

The Physics major at CSU provides a high-quality, structured and affordable education with opportunities for student engagement in undergraduate research, teaching and service to the community.

▶ Rigorous preparation in physics as needed for full time employment as research scientist or engineer and for advanced graduate programs in science and engineering

▶ Students in the Bachelor of Science track have the option to pursue an Honors/Scholars version. They may also combine their BS with an MS graduate degree in Physics through the accelerated 4+1 program.

professional outcomes

Students with BS degrees are prepared for careers in science, engineering and much more.

Alumni with a B.S. in Physics are highly successful in obtaining employment at leading institutions (e.g. NASA, Intel, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, UH, CWRU, Philips, Energizer, First Energy, Zin Technologies, PPG Industries, SherwinWillams, Peak Nano, CERN, Los Alamos National Lab, Oak Ridge National Lab) and in getting admitted to prestigious graduate programs (e.g. John Hopkins U., Carnegie Mellon U., Caltech,  University of Chicago, UPenn, Rice U, Penn State, UMass Boston, CWRU, OSU, KSU).

▶ High earning potential as a full-time research scientist or engineer

▶ Ability to work on original research problems in various fields

▶ Rigorous preparation for graduate programs in physics, astronomy, math, science and engineering

opportunities

There are many opportunities available to physics majors at CSU.

▶ Ability to gain valuable teaching experience by assisting with basic physics labs

▶ Ability to participate in original undergraduate research with CSU physics faculty using state of the art research facilities

▶ Ability to gain leadership skills through serving as an officer for CSU’s chapter of the Society of Physics Students (SPS)

▶ Eligibility for local and national physics scholarships as well as national physics scholarships and awards through the National SPS office

▶ Eligibility for TEAM-UP Together Scholarships to support African American students in the pursuit and attainment of their bachelor’s degrees in physics

▶ Opportunities to participate in interdisciplinary original research projects supported locally or nationally (e.g. by NSF, DOE, NIH) in collaboration with other CSU science and engineering departments and other research institutions (e.g. CWRU, NASA, KSU, Akron University, etc.)
