The Big Beaver Road Corridor is home to many Fortune 500 companies and for many it is the only impression of the City of Troy, Michigan

This impression has been one of an auto-dominated corridor, with large parking fields close to the road and buildings pushed back, forming a suburban development pattern

The corridor is bisected by I-75, a major interstate highway. This is a challenge to pedestrians and bicyclists.

Parking is dominant in the corridor

A concept emerges - A World Class Boulevard

This section view plate shows the frontage lanes with on-street parking, wider sidewalks, zero front setback, and greater building heights to provide pedestrian enclosure along with wide right-of-way

The plan established a connected grid system, which would enable motorists to get to rear yard parking lots and structures without traveling on Big Beaver Road. A grid system is more efficient because it provides more options and enables the dispersion of traffic.

Concept for the corridor

This is the plan for Troy City Center

Frontage streets in strategic locations maintain the capacity of Big Beaver Road while allowing parallel streets with on-street parking to create walkable environment. Note the forested portal at the I-75 interchange.
