In children affected by cryptorchidism it induces the maturation of the underdeveloped testicle, the growth of the too short spermatic cord and the descent of the testicle.

It is also used for selected cases of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (hypogonadism secondary to a pituitary deficiency) in males.

Vitagon Injection (Generic Human Chorionic Gonadotropin Injection) is a medicine whose actions are almost the same as those of luteinizing hormone (LH), which is produced by the pituitary gland. It is a hormone also normally produced by the placenta in pregnancy. Chorionic gonadotropin has different uses for females and males.

In females, chorionic gonadotropin is used to help conception occur. It is usually given in combination with other drugs such as menotropins and urofollitropin. Many women being treated with these drugs usually have already tried Clomiphene alone (e.g., Promifen tablets by Alpha Pharma) and have not been able to conceive yet.

Chorionic gonadotropin is also used in in vitro fertilization (IVF) programs.

In males, LH and chorionic gonadotropin stimulate the testes to produce male hormones such as testosterone. Testosterone causes the enlargement of the penis and testes and the growth of pubic and underarm hair. It also increases the production of sperm. Although chorionic gonadotropin has been prescribed to help some patients lose weight, it should never be used this way.

The dosage of Vitagon Injections (Generic Human Chorionic Gonadotropin Injections) is given below:

Usual Adult Dose for Ovulation Induction: Ovulation Induction (if the cause of anovulation is secondary and not due to primary ovarian failure):

Chorionic Gonadotropin: 5000 to 10,000 units IM one day following last day of menotropins.

Recombinant chorionic gonadotropin: 250 mcg subcutaneously one day following last dose of folliclestimulating agent.

The dosage of Vitagon Injections (Generic Human Chorionic Gonadotropin Injections) is given below: Usual Adult Dose for Hypogonadism - Male: Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (secondary to a pituitary deficiency):

500 to 1000 units IM three times a week for 3 weeks followed by the same dose twice a week for 3 weeks or, 4000 units IM three times a week for 6 to 9 months followed by 2000 units three times a week for an additional 3 months.

Contraindications

Storage Instructions

Warnings

Vitagon Injections (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin Injections) should be used in conjunction with human menopausal gonadotropins only by physicians experienced with infertility problems who are familiar with the criteria for patient selection, contraindications, warnings, precautions and adverse reactions.

The principal serious adverse reactions are:

(1) Ovarian hyperstimulation, a syndrome of sudden ovarian enlargement, ascites with or without pain and/or pleural effusion,

(2) Rupture of ovarian cysts with resultant hemoperitoneum,

(3) Multiple births and

(4) Arterial thromboembolism.

Warnings

Anaphylaxis and other hypersensitivity reactions have been reported with urinary-derived hCG products. Induction of androgen secretion by HCG may induce precocious puberty in patients treated for cryptorchidism. Therapy should be discontinued if signs of precocious puberty occur. Since androgens may cause fluid retention, Human Chorionic Gonadotropin injections should be used with caution in patients with cardiac or renal disease, epilepsy, migraine or asthma.

Stop using Human Chorionic Gonadotropin Injections and get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have any of these signs of a blood clot: pain, warmth, redness, numbness, or tingling in your arm or leg; confusion, extreme dizziness, or severe headache.

Common Side effects of Vitagon (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin Injection) are Headache, irritability, restlessness, depression, fatigue, edema, precocious puberty, gynecomastia, pain at the site of injection. Hypersensitivity reactions, both localized and systemic in nature, have also been reported.

Overdose

Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine. An overdose of HCG is not expected to produce life-threatening symptoms. Call your doctor right away if you have any symptoms of OHSS: severe pelvic pain, swelling of the hands or legs, stomach pain and swelling, shortness of breath, weight gain, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, and urinating less than normal.
