Cabgolin Tablets (Generic Cabergoline Tablets)

Cabgolin (Generic Cabergoline Tablets) is used for the treatment of hyperprolactinemic disorders, either idiopathic or due to pituitary adenomas. This medicine is also indicated for the prevention of the onset of physiological lactation in the puerperium for clearly defined medical reasons.

Cabgolin can be used to treat certain menstrual problems, fertility problems in men and women, and pituitary prolactinomas (tumors of the pituitary gland).

It works by stopping the brain from making and releasing the prolactin hormone from the pituitary gland. Cabergoline use is usually stopped when prolactin levels are normal for 6 months.

Cabgolin Tablets Dosage The dosage of Cabgolin tablets (Generic Cabergoline Tablets) is given below: The recommended dosage of cabergoline tablets for initiation of therapy is 0.25 mg twice a week. Dosage may be increased by 0.25 mg twice weekly up to a dosage of 1 mg twice a week according to the patient’s serum prolactin level. Contraindications

Cabgolin tablets are contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to Cabergoline or any other component of this medication.

Cabergoline is also contraindicated in patients with: Uncontrolled hypertension or known hypersensitivity to ergot derivatives.

History of cardiac valvular disorders, as suggested by anatomical evidence of valvulopathy of any valve, determined by pre-treatment evaluation including echocardiographic demonstration of valve leaflet thickening, valve restriction, or mixed valve restriction-stenosis.

History of pulmonary, pericardial, or retroperitoneal fibrotic disorders.

Storage Instructions

Cabgolin (Generic Cabergoline tablets ) have to be stored at controlled room temperature i.e. from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F) with excursions permitted between 15° to 30°C (59° to 86°F).

Warnings

Dopamine agonists in general should not be used in patients with pregnancy-induced hypertension, for example, preeclampsia, eclampsia, and postpartum hypertension, unless the potential benefit is judged to outweigh the possible risk.

All patients should undergo a cardiovascular evaluation, including echocardiogram to assess the potential presence of valvular disease. If valvular disease is detected, the patient should not be treated with Cabergoline.

Postmarketing cases of pleural, pericardial, and retroperitoneal fibrosis have been reported following administration of Cabergoline. Some reports were in patients previously treated with other ergotinic dopamine agonists. Cabergoline should not be used in patients with a history of cardiac or extracardiac fibrotic disorders.

Warnings Since Cabergoline is extensively metabolized by the liver, caution should be used, and careful monitoring exercised, when administering Cabergoline to patients with hepatic impairment.

Impulse control/compulsive behaviors, including pathological gambling, increased libido, and hypersexuality have been reported in patients treated with dopamine agonists including Cabergoline. This has been generally reversible upon reduction of the dose or treatment discontinuation.

Overdose

There is no experience with Cabergoline (Cabgolin tablets) in humans of over dosage when used in the proposed indications. Doses of Cabergoline up to 4.5 mg per week have been used in hyperprolactinemic patients.

Cabergoline (Cabgolin tablets) overdosage can be expected to produce nasal congestion, syncope, or hallucinations.

General supportive measures should be undertaken to remove any unabsorbed drug and maintain blood pressure if necessary. In addition, the administration of dopamine antagonist drug may be advisable. Measures to support blood pressure should be taken if necessary.

Cabgolin Tablets During Pregnancy Cabergoline (Cabgolin tablets) has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category B. Reproduction studies have been performed with Cabergoline in animals. There were maternotoxic effects but no teratogenic effects in mice given cabergoline at doses up to 8 mg/kg/day (approximately 55 times the maximum recommended human dose) during the period of organogenesis.

There are, however, no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Because animal reproduction studies are not always predictive of human response, this drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed.
