The Place for Progress Clear Lake experiences economic boom in recent years

2021 was a historic year in Clear Lake. Not only did the city celebrate the opening of its first hotel and conference center in more than two decades, but it also constructed a state-of-the-art wellness center in partnership with the school district, welcomed seven new retail businesses and restaurants downtown and laid the foundation for future developments, all while grappling with the lingering challenges of the coronavirus pandemic.

Traffic has been good and so good on some occasions that he’s sold out of freshly popped kettle corn. “It’s been a good fit,” Andersen said about his three-year-old business that got its start at the Clear Lake Farmers Market in the Surf Ballroom & Museum parking lot. “It’s total pros and no cons. This is our home.” Chris’ Kettle Corn is among more than 10 new businesses that have made downtown Clear Lake home since the onset of the pandemic.

“It is truly an exciting time for Clear Lake. The explosive growth in both new and existing businesses is cause for celebration with many more economic development projects in the works,” said Stacy Doughan, Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO.

In 2020, despite the absence of large-scale events, at least four businesses opened, expanded or relocated on, or near, Main Avenue, including Gyro Place, The Basic Birder, Simply Nourished and Brin & Lew. (Read more about our retail businesses and restaurants on pages 8-10 and pages 14-15).

The beautiful backdrop of the 3,684-acre lake and the return of signature events, like Thursdays on Main and the July 4th Celebration, drew record numbers to Clear Lake to enjoy an array of food, retail and entertainment offerings.

The businesses have added more value to an already vibrant downtown and have bolstered the city’s efforts to attract more people to live, work and visit Clear Lake.

At the onset of Clear Lake’s tourism season, Skip’s Kicks, a locally owned shoe store, opened on Main Avenue, followed by True North Nutrition, Chris’ Kettle Corn, Cancun by the Lake, White Barn Picket Fence, Nash & Ivy and Charlie’s Soda Fountain. Clear Lake’s downtown is convenient for visitors as restaurants and retailers are within walking distance of the lake, which the city and community organizations have invested hundreds of thousands of dollars to preserve over the years. Chris Andersen, owner of Chris’ Kettle Corn, a gourmet popcorn and candy shop, relocated his business to Clear Lake last summer because of the guaranteed foot traffic in a tourist community.

In fact, this year marks the first time in decades that the city’s Main Avenue has no vacant storefronts — a milestone contrary to many communities of similar size. “This positive economic momentum is the result of many Clear Lakers who strongly believe in this community and are very supportive of our businesses, organizations, events and local school,” said Clear Lake Mayor Nelson Crabb. “Clear Lake is a place individuals and families want to be.” In recent years, the city, led by veteran city administrator Scott Flory, has invested in infrastructure, public safety, technology and much-needed amenities to position itself for prosperity and future growth. Such investments have resulted in projects like the Courtway Park Development east of Interstate 35 and north of Highway 122, the Emerald Edge Subdivision

along Highway 18 between North 14th and North 20th streets, the Clear Lake Athletics and Wellness Center and several others, like RAKA and Greenlee Corrugated Solutions Inc. Courtway Park is where an 85-room Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott and 8,000-square-foot conference center, an Old Dominion Freight Line service center and a 6,000-square-foot commercial and retail space have been constructed this past year. Groundwork for an approximately 51,000-square-foot Hy-Vee grocery store began at the Emerald Edge Subdivision in late 2021 with an opening date near the end of 2022. “We’re building quite a track record of economic development projects here in Clear Lake, and I don’t think those just happen overnight,” said Bennett Smith, Clear Lake Second Ward Councilman. “We’ve hit a lot of singles and doubles in terms of economic development and then when we get a project like this it really becomes a homerun. “I think it’s going to catalyze further economic development along that area.” The Hy-Vee development is a once-in-a-generation project, Flory said. “You don’t see these kinds of things happen very often in a community,” he said. That can also be said about the partnership between the City of Clear Lake and the Clear Lake Community School District to build an 81,000-square-foot wellness center on district property south of the high school, north of First Avenue North and west of North 20th Street. The wellness center, which will be open to residents and visitors alike, will feature men’s and women’s locker rooms, saunas, an indoor playground and a 47,114-square-foot field house.

The field house will have a 200-meter indoor track, an indoor turf field marked for football and soccer, two hardwood courts and three multipurpose courts. The second level includes an elevated walking track and fitness center with cardio and weightlifting equipment. Construction on the project began in 2020 and is slated to be completed in early 2022 after several material delays. Other recreational amenities like a new splash pad, restroom facility and sunshade near City Beach were completed in July 2020 and have since been frequented by children and families of all ages to cool down on the warm summer days in Clear Lake. “Things are good and they are getting better,” Flory said. “We are expanding housing opportunities, economic development initiatives and city services and amenities with the goal of being the best place in the Midwest.” 2022 is looking to be just as fruitful as the previous two in Clear Lake as work begins on a new park project, including an all-inclusive playground and splash pad, on South 15th Street near the Clear Lake Aquatic Center that will accommodate needs within the community and be a destination regionally. Also scheduled for completion in the coming year is 173° Craft Distillery at 306 First Ave. N. within walking distance of Clear Lake and Main Avenue. It’ll feature specialty cocktails, appetizers and a rooftop deck, which is bound to be a popular destination for those looking to enjoy the sunsets over the lake. There is also exciting growth anticipated at Pritchard Companies with its recent purchase of two properties in Clear Lake, one of which will bring a Streetrod golf car showroom to downtown. Three Stars Plaza by Rachel Wumkes

As you travel along beautiful North Shore Drive, you’ll notice a futuristic-like structure near the iconic Surf Ballroom. It’s not a bird, or a plane, and while it looks a bit like a UFO, I can assure you, it is not that either. This one-of-a-kind, 15-foot structure represents the heart and soul of Clear Lake: rock ‘n’ roll. The space, aptly named The Three Stars Plaza, is a tribute to our three fallen stars, Buddy Holly, J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson, and Ritchie Valens. The art feature was erected to honor the stars’ final performance at the Surf Ballroom before the tragic plane crash that took their lives on a snowy, winter night in February of 1959. The unique feature for the Plaza came about years later, in August of 2008, when the Clear Lake City Council voted to purchase the North Shore Amoco Service Station. Having been abandoned for a few years, the dilapidated building had become a bit of an eyesore. As the Surf Ballroom attracts countless visitors from across the globe annually, having this rundown, empty business nearby was a concern due to the proximity of such a high-traffic tourist attraction. Thus, the City Council voted to turn the space into a park – the most unique park in town, actually! One which honors the legacy of these music legends, keeping their story alive for rock ‘n’ roll fans to enjoy for years to come. It was an extensive process, one with many intricate stages and intense collaboration to ensure it was built correctly and done with style. In 2009, RDG Planning & Design out of Des Moines created a conceptual plan for the area. The following year, Dean Snyder Construction in Clear Lake completed the park project. In 2011, Sukup Manufacturing in Sheffield fabricated the piece, which had been designed by David Dahlquist with the Dahlquist Art Studio based in Des Moines.

The structure itself is a unique piece, designed to honor the rock ‘n’ roll legends. A spindle sits in the center of the Plaza, with three stacked records on top. If you stand directly under the records and look up, you’ll see the inscription of their names etched into the material. A few years after it was built, with funding from the Iowa Great Places Grant program, the interactive music and audio feature was added. With just the push of a button, you can hear the story, listen to snippets of their songs, and learn about the legacy of these music icons and how they shaped the music industry forever. At night, the Plaza is illuminated in the glow of blue neon from the structure. A subtle reminder that the music lives on in Clear Lake. It beats in the hearts of our many residents, and is kept alive by the countless visitors who pay homage to these three fallen stars. Let’s Play! Pickleball is on the rise in Clear Lake

It might have a silly name, but that’s just part of what makes the sport of pickleball so great. The game was created with one agenda in mind: Fun! Whether you’re five, eighty-five, or somewhere in between, pickleball was designed to be easy to both learn and play. It truly is a game for all ages. And no, there are no pickles involved! Pickleball is traditionally played on a badminton-sized court with special paddles made of wood or other hard-composite materials. The ball used is similar to a whiffle ball, but just a tad smaller. By using a lower net and the slower paced whiffle ball allows the game to be accessible to people of all ages and abilities. But beware, some of these players out there are sharks and can really hit the ball! Pickleball picked up steam in Clear Lake the past few years. What started as a few people has grown immensely. Wanting to get a group together and play, local pickleball enthusiast, Jeff Baertz, put a call out on social media asking if there was any interest in the Clear Lake area. Turns out… there was. And a lot of it! “I put a post out there on social media,” Jeff said, “and the people just kept commenting! So, I decided to do something about it.” Jeff contacted the City of Clear Lake and the school to collaborate on using the tennis courts on the east side of the high school. In no time, he had approval to tape off courts and set up the smaller nets. He started a Facebook group to keep people up to date on open play times and information on any happenings for the sport. And now, they are even an official club.

While there is no set time for play, the Clear Lake Pickleball Club typically gets together on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings during our favorable weather months at 8am for a few hours. However, if another time works better for you, simply drop a post onto their Facebook Page and people will show up. All levels are welcome, and anybody can join in the fun. It’s recommended you bring your own paddle, but there are a few extras supplied if you don’t have one. The group has even hosted a few “Beginning Saturday” sessions. Something of a Pickleball 101 for those who would like to pick up the sport but aren’t sure where to start. Seasoned players will show you the ropes, get a paddle in your hand, and set you off on your pickleball journey! Celebrating 35 years in Clear Lake

Looking across the water on a sunny, summer day in Clear Lake, there’s a chance you will see one of the most iconic sights in the area – The Lady of the Lake. The beautiful paddlewheel ferry was built in 1960. Its original use was to transport passengers across the Missouri River, a service offered back before full-scale bridges had been built. Today, the Lady of the Lake makes her home in Clear Lake at the Sea Wall during the peak season of use. Her story, however, of how she became a premier tourist attraction in North Iowa is rather interesting. In 1985, Gary Geist stopped at a bar on his way home from work one day. The only other person in the bar was his banker so he sat down and struck up a conversation. The banker began to tell Gary all about this paddleboat ferry he’d found that was in bad shape. He thought Gary needed to buy the boat to save it from its inevitable demise. Gary remembers laughing at the guy, thinking he was ridiculous for even suggesting such a thing. “I said to the guy, ‘Do you have any idea how much money that will cost me to renovate?’” The banker looked Gary right in the eye and replied, “Gary, all I got is money.” And so, he couldn’t resist.

Gary and his wife, Karen, purchased the Lady in 1985 and began renovations while the boat was still in Yankton, South Dakota. They added the top deck and refurbished much of the interior before it was moved to southern Iowa. Once there, preparations began for the final transport to Clear Lake. “The Clear Lake Chamber wanted it to be out on the lake,” he said. “I just wanted to promote tourism to that part of Iowa, and they were all for it.” It wasn’t an easy feat, that’s for sure. It cost approximately $47,000 to tear it down, transport, and then put back together. “We went to Des Moines to get permission to move it up to North Iowa,” Gary recalled. “It was over 100 tons on that trailer, so we had to have every bridge inspected before and after it was crossed.” Thankfully, the gaming commission and the State of Iowa saw how much something like the Lady could positively impact North Iowa and provided police escorts and permits for the Lady to be transported across all 37 counties. Once she made it to her permanent home in Clear Lake, Gary and Karen began operating the tourist attraction. “We ran it for 20 years,” Gary said. “My wife and I figured it out one time, and we put in about 28,000 nautical miles doing tours across Clear Lake.” When Gary and Karen decided to hang up their captain’s hats, it wasn’t the end of the Lady’s story. There have been a handful of owners throughout the years, each with their own special memories and contributions to what she is today.

“My best memory is how much I enjoyed the people,” recalled previous owner, Steve Ward. “The evening cruises as the captain were my favorite.” Under Steve’s ownership, the Lady received an upgrade to the interior, the electronics on board, and a whole new bottom. Roger Nordman took possession next, adding a more efficient drive system, and replacing all the old vinyl siding with new. “We were constantly doing upgrades to the boat,” Roger commented. His best memory runs along the same lines… the people. “I was in an airport once in Omaha and a lady approached me, stating she knew me. I laughed, thinking it couldn’t be possible, but then she showed me a picture of us together. Her family had been up to Clear Lake that summer and she said her favorite part was going for a cruise on the Lady of the Lake.” Roger sold the Lady to Jon Berhow, who operated the attraction for a short time before it changed hands again, coming under the ownership of Scott and Niki Monson who still run the Lady today. Even now, 35 years later, the Lady of the Lake is a centerpiece in the Clear Lake community. A sign of changing seasons when she’s brought out each spring and put away in the late fall. Her public cruises are a hit during our peak tourist season, offering a daily 90-minute narrated tour around Clear Lake for the public, as well as accommodating various special events. The double-decker boat features tables for guests to sit back and relax. Snacks and drinks are available for purchase at the bar.

And, for those who don’t quite have their sea legs, the Lady of the Lake offers dockside night on Wednesday evenings during the summer. Often hosting live music or a DJ, it’s an enjoyable evening of food, drinks, and fun. Sitting down with current owner, Scott, he recalls the best part of his stint in ownership. “Taking kids for rides is a major highlight,” he said. “When they honk the horn, it just lights up their day… well, either that or it scares them!” Preparations are in the works to acknowledge the 35th year of the Lady of the Lake running on Clear Lake. At the time of print, nothing has been made official, but keep an eye on their Facebook page (@cruiseclearlake) for updates and announcements on special events. “Buying that boat was one of the best things I ever did,” Gary recalls, a bit of nostalgia in his voice. And we’re sure glad he did, too. The Lady of the Lake represents the heart and soul of what makes Clear Lake such a special place to live, work and play. We are proud to have her on our lake for the past 35 years and look forward to many more years of operation for the community. She’s majestic and grand, a true gem in the heart of Clear Lake. From US Hwy 18 in Clear Lake, go north on N 8th Street for 4.7 miles. (Road turns into Grouse Avenue) When the paved road curves to the west, take the gravel road to the east (310th Street), then immediately north again on gravel (Gull Avenue). Go north one-half mile. At the T-intersection of Gull Avenue and 315th Street, you will see a large set of “Buddy Holly” glasses. Walk along the south side of the fence row to the west about one-quarter mile. Known worldwide for its place in rock ‘n’ roll history, the Surf Ballroom keeps live music alive in North Iowa. Located one block west of the Surf ’s front entrance, this circular park plays off of the musical significance of the Surf Ballroom and honors the final performance of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson. The monument was built and dedicated in 2011 and features an art deco inspired central spindle, holding three 45 records in a position “ready to play.” At night, it is beautifully lit with bright blue neon lights around each of the records.

Bluebill Lake

Just four miles southeast of Clear Lake, Bluebill is a 40-acre lake filled with great fishing. Species include channel catfish, largemouth bass, yellow perch, black crappie and bluegill. It has a hard surface boat ramp (electric motors only), fishing jetty, and restrooms.
