Fishing the By Bob Jensen

I have a good number of friends who live in the state just north of Iowa. They like to fish, and mostly they like to fish for walleyes. Several times most years they come to Iowa, specifically Clear Lake in north central Iowa, to fish for walleyes. Clear Lake has become one of the premier walleye fisheries in the Midwest. Clear Lake also has an abundant population of yellow bass, a very popular panfish that is easy to catch, there are no limits, and they’re great on the table. Every now and then we hear about lakes that have problems with their fish populations or water quality. People say, “The lake isn’t what it used to be.” Clear Lake is one of those lakes: It isn’t what it used to be. For those of us who like to go fishing, we say “Clear Lake isn’t what it used to be, and we’re glad of it.” Clear Lake is a true success story of a body of water that has been rejuvenated from an average fishery to an outstanding fishery. Here’s how it happened.

Clear Lake is a 3,600 acre body of water in north central Iowa. It is surrounded by the communities of Clear Lake and Ventura. In addition to the fishing, Clear Lake has many interesting sites. Perhaps the most famous site is the historic Surf Ballroom. The Surf is where rock and roll legends Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, and Richie Valens played their last concert. Today, many very recognizable musical acts bring their talents to The Surf monthly. Several factors enabled Clear Lake to rebound so notably. The water coming in is much cleaner now due to a rejuvenated marsh that feeds the lake. Other water coming in is also cleaner thanks to Clear Project initiatives. Additionally, the west end of the lake was dredged a few years ago, creating an entirely new environment. The west end twenty years ago was a bowl four feet deep and covered with mud. It’s now a diverse ecosystem with depths to twenty five feet and lots of structure. Vegetation is growing in the deeper water and provides much habitat. Clear Lake is open to fishing for all species of fish year ‘round. Anglers in surrounding states that have the urge to get on the water as soon as the ice goes out can do so

BLUEBILL LAKE 14369 South 40th Street. Just four miles southeast of Clear Lake, Bluebill is a 40-acre lake filled with great fishing. Species include channel catfish, largemouth bass, yellow perch, black crappie and bluegill. It has a hard surface boat ramp (electric motors only), fishing jetty, and restrooms.

MIDWEST on Clear Lake, and fishing can be very good at this time of year. Cast sixteenth ounce jigs tipped with minnows to shallow rocky or sand areas. Also try slip-bobber rigs. Iowa is a two line state and a permit to employ a third line can be purchased. Cast a line and put a slip-bobber rig or two out to increase your odds of getting bit. At times the action will be so fast that one line is all an angler can handle effectively. There are lots of places to get bit. Dock anglers do very well this time of year, and there are lots of public docks to fish from. The Grade in Ventura is also popular and productive for shore-anglers. As the season progresses, many walleyes will move off shore. Try pulling Lucky Shad crankbaits behind Off Shore planer boards. This is another situation where the multiple line rule really comes into play. Two anglers with three lines apiece can really cover the water. Use different colored crankbaits until the best one is determined. Sometimes the fish show a preference, sometimes they don’t. Yellow bass spawn in the shallows in mid-spring. When they’re there, action is fast once they’re located, and that isn’t difficult. Look for water two to five feet deep with a

sand or gravel bottom, tie on a 1/32nd ounce hair or feather jig, tip it with a small minnow or something to add scent and start casting. Keep as many yellows as you want to clean. They’re perfect for a fish fry. Because of the clearing water, vegetation is more abundant and growing in deeper water. This provides habitat for largemouth bass, crappies, and bluegills. These species are becoming more abundant every year, and perch are increasing in population as well. Look for the bass, crappies and bluegills around the shallow vegetation, go deeper for the perch. If your goal is to catch a musky, Clear Lake is a good place to go. The truly big ones aren’t there in numbers yet, but if you fish the right places, and there are lots of right places, your chance for a musky in the 40 inch range is as good as it gets in many lakes in musky country. Throw bucktails, jerkbaits, and big minnow imitating baits around docks and over rock structures.

When I was a youngster, we so looked forward to going fishing on Clear Lake. The target was bullheads, and every now and we would catch a walleye, and that was a big deal. Today, walleyes are by far more abundant. In fact it’s unusual to catch a bullhead: The walleyes ate them all. Clear Lake is a true success story that was created by lots of folks, professionals and volunteers. If you’re looking to start your fishing season early, Clear Lake is a great place to do so. It’s also an outstanding place to fish and explore the rest of the year. Visit Clear Lake once and you’ll probably visit again. On my last trip to Clear Lake, we fished for walleyes, yellow bass, and crappies, and we caught all three in varying numbers. We caught lots of walleyes in the 14-17 inch range, which is a good sign for the future.

It’s a complex question, often answered with a simple answer: the name of the town in which you live. But have you actually pondered the depth of its meaning? Thought about your family tree and how the branches have grown? Twisting through the sands of time, etching the story of your lineage. Tracing the branches of a family tree used to take years of painstaking research. The original records were often of the church. Keeping track of births, baptism, confirmation, marriage and children born. As time moved on and our World evolved into the technological hub of knowledge it is today, so did the recordkeeping and options for research. But also – the availability of travel. Hundreds of years ago, it was common for families to remain close. Physically, that is. The option to move across the state, or the country, wasn’t feasible. There was no need to unearth where one came from, as their history was centralized in one location. But soon, people became able to move away. Technology gave us options, becoming more mobile with easy access to other parts of the world. Thus, the dissolution of many family trees. Cousins, aunts, uncles… spread across the land far and wide. 18

The desire to find and connect with our roots is not a new concept; however, thanks to the availability of DNA testing, it’s easier than ever before to find long lost relatives and the deep history of our families. With the addition of resources like Ancestry.com and 23andMe, the answers are at your fingertips. A coliseum of knowledge to assist you in your quest to find your family history. But it doesn’t stop there. Simply identifying the branches on your family tree is no longer sufficient. People don’t just want to know where they came from… they want to see it. They want to stand at the grave of their ancestors. See where their family lived and worked. And so, armed with information, they flock to their family’s homeland. To learn their history. To uncover their pasts. To see which way the branches of their family tree have grown. This wildly popular trend of DNA Tourism, which became a ‘Top Travel Trend’ in 2019, is only expected to gain more traction and grow in the years to come. We are lucky, in Clear Lake, to have a slew of helpful resources right in our backyard. The Clear Lake Historical Society was founded in 1985 and serves as the primary private repository of historical documents, photographs, and

artifacts related to Clear Lake’s rich history. Information is at their fingertips as they’ve garnered a plethora of history books, year books, and plat books over the years. The Historical Society is currently awaiting the restoration and construction of their new building (located on the corner of 8th St & 1st Ave S), which will include a Research Room for hands on help finding ancestor information. With the heightened popularity of this travel trend, it will be an asset to those who have travelled to Clear Lake, searching for answers. The music lives on!

Notoriety is often a sought-after trait. People want to be known for something. Anything. But what if you’re known for the biggest, most tragic loss in the history of Rock and Roll? What if your legacy is littered with sadness, grief and despair? While the Surf Ballroom & Museum honors the three shining stars we lost that fateful night, they’ve done something remarkable in the process. Through dedication, commitment and the education of our youth, they haven’t let the music die. In Clear Lake, the music lives on. Struggling in the early 1990s, the Surf faced an existing doom. Thankfully, local business owner Dean Snyder purchased and restored the venue. A love story for the record books, it’s been told Dean’s wife, Joanne, was his motivation behind the acquisition. Dean said, “If she liked to fish, I would have bought her a fishing pole, but she liked to dance, so I bought her the Surf.” The Snyder family leased the Surf Ballroom to the North Iowa Cultural Center & Museum, whose main purpose is to preserve, maintain and manage the historic Surf Ballroom property as a center utilized to enhance the quality of life in the North Iowa area by providing cultural, education and entertainment opportunities.

Always incorporating the history of the Surf Ballroom, students will get a hands on approach to education and involvement within the community. But it’s not just for the kids. They’re hoping to eventually provide adult classes and options for seniors as well. To learn more about upcoming classes and events, go to surfballroom.com and click on the Education Tab. And someday, maybe someday, if the cards align and the vision of the Music Enrichment Center comes to full fruition, there may be a recording studio on site. Offering the space to talent as they pass through town in hopes they stay awhile and record their next hit single or album here. It would definitely be a key point offered to musicians when they contract a show in the iconic Surf Ballroom. We will never forget the tragic events of that fateful February night in 1959. The day, some say, the music died. Forever etched in the hearts and minds of every Clear Laker, and of many people around the globe. A day we mourn those whose lives were lost. But here, inside the Surf Ballroom and the Music Enrichment Center, we celebrate. We celebrate the music. The memories. The rich history of Rock and Roll. And we remember.

They’ve recently put those wheels into motion in a big way. Because the music lives on in each of us. The Music Enrichment Center came to full fruition in 2019 with the purchase of the adjacent building near the Surf. It’s the perfect addition for the people of Clear Lake and our visitors. Its purpose is to share the story and history of the Surf Ballroom and will be instrumental in shaping young minds, educating them about our legacy and enhancing their ability to express themselves through music.

Directions to the Memorial Site From US Hwy 18 in Clear Lake, go north on N 8th Street for 4.7 miles. (Road turns into Grouse Avenue)

This mecca of music education is a place to attract lovers of music, providing a centralized location where people, young and old, can gather to learn, practice, perform and enjoy music.

When the paved road curves to the west, take the gravel road to the east (310th Street), then immediately north again on gravel (Gull Avenue)

For years, studies have shown the importance of music education in children, especially when allowed to work in conjunction with other subjects in school. Music helps kids grow in self-esteem, build essential skills, and prepare them for bright futures.

At the t-intersection of Gull Avenue and 315th Street, you will see a set of “Buddy Holly” glasses. You may park along the side of the road and walk along the south side of the fence to the west for approximately one quarter mile.

While still in the early stages of development, the Music Enrichment Center will provide a wide range of possibilities for music lovers. Small spaces for private lessons are available, as well as a large area for specialized classes.

Run under the water rainbow, dodging liquid cannons as they explode from the ground. It’s the perfect way to cool down on a hot day at the beach.

Splash Pad Renovation With the belief that all kids are created equal, we are excited for the addition of an inclusive playground to welcome kids and families of all abilities to learn, play and grow together. While fundraising efforts continue through 2020, the committee will take beginning steps in construction to ensure innovative play for every age and ability.

Everybody Plays Inclusive Playground Big things are happening in our school system! • The FFA Program came off the blocks full speed ahead, shaping the minds of the farming generations of tomorrow. • We’ve entered the realm of greatness as Clear Lake sits in the top 10% of schools in the state of Iowa. Hats off to the teachers and staff who mold these young children each and every day! • Project Lead the Way is growing and expanding the minds of our youth by giving them real-world challenges to overcome. Our children are getting hands-on experience through modules that involve problem solving, teamwork and critical thinking skills.

There is one rule of thumb while at the Lake: you must get up, get out, and get moving. Lake time fun does not include lounging in front of a television, a gaming remote glued to your hands as your retinas burn from hours and hours of battling the bad guys. Your brain will slowly turn to mush as your body become lethargic, the excessive screen time sucking the life out of you. Lake time fun is being outside. Breathing in fresh air, feeling the cool breeze across your face as the warmth of the summer sun soaks into your pores. It’s park visits, bike rides, paddleboat adventures on the lake. It’s floaties and life vests and cannon balls off the dock. It’s doing something. Anything. Thankfully, Clear Lake has a lot of options for whatever level of activity you desire. There will be no lazy days while you’re at the Lake. You’ll want to pack in as much fun while you’re here as you possibly can. So what’s there to do? I’ve got a few suggestions to fill those days with fun and sun and memories to last a lifetime. Biking around the Lake is a great way to experience the scenic views while also getting exercise. You’ll often see

bikers pedaling along North Shore before making their way to the bike path along the Grade in Ventura. Continuing on that route, you can swing onto South Shore to complete your trip around the Lake. And for those who prefer their outdoor activities on foot, the list of organized runs is quite impressive! The Lights on 5K, Fam Bam Color Jam, Earth Day 5K/10K, the Parkinson’s Shake Rattle & Stroll and the Champagne 5K. Whether you’re a hard-core runner striving for the winner’s podium, or choose to walk the course, any of these events are for you! Now, if you are a lover of both biking and the run, you might want to consider participating in TRI Clear Lake. In its 4th year, this event has proven to be one of the top sprint triathlon races in the area. But what if you’re looking for something more? Something to really challenge you? Well, look no further! Because TRI Clear Lake is offering an Olympic distance, along with the Sprint, for 2020! It’s the perfect opportunity to push the limit and see what you’re made of. The race takes place on Saturday, May 30th and can be done individually or as a relay. As always, the highlight of this event is the incredible finish-line party held in City Park. Celebrate your accomplishment with live music, messages, and

drinks with our gorgeous Lake in the background. A paddle board cruise along the shoreline, especially during a majestic sunset, is my kind of fun. Relishing in the beauty around me, the golden hues as the sun glistens against the water - it’s true paradise. However, if you’re looking to make it a competition, you might want to register for Paddlefest in July. The race is a great way to explore the shores of our spectacular lake on a kayak, canoe, or stand up paddle board. With various races to choose from, there really is something for everyone! If casual group activities are more your style, I suggest you check out the Parks & Rec Department. They offer a wide array of laid-back activities for children and adults. It happens every day. Three hundred sixty-five times each year. Yet, it never gets old. Thereâ€™s just something about the sun setting over Clear Lake. Something magical. Itâ€™s like being transported to another time and place. Where nothing matters but the hues of color bursting over the horizon. The golden rays fading to a deep orange. The wisp of pink through the clouds. The glistening water, so bright, not hurting your eyes, but causing them to dance in delight.

Your body expels the stresses of the day as the promise of another tomorrow is literally on the horizon. Yes, thereâ€™s definitely something magical about a sunset over Clear Lake.

The year 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the Iowa state parks system. Iowa will host a yearlong celebration to commemorate the centennial with special events, promotions, historical and cultural connections and much more! There are currently 83 state parks in our great state of Iowa, totaling 53,000 acres of land. These designated areas are available for activities from sight-seeing and hiking to camping, picnicking and swimming. Granted, our winter months and the bitter cold often hinder their usage for a portion of the year.
