Bluebi Lake Just four miles southeast of Clear Lake, Bluebill is a 40-acre lake filled with great fishing. Species include channel catfish, largemouth bass, yellow perch, black crappie and bluegill. It has a hard surface boat ramp (electric motors only), fishing jetty, and restrooms.

Putting the CLEAR in CLEAR LAKE By Jim Sholly, CLEAR Project Director
It is hard to imagine Clear Lake without the picturesque lake in the background, and the opportunities it provides as the focal point for North Iowa. Working to protect this beautiful resource has been a community effort for some time now and through the efforts of the CLEAR Project we are now seeing a lake that is providing the best recreation that anyone has seen in quite some time. It wasn’t that long ago when swimmers headed to the beaches were met with an unsightly green tinge and often a smell that sent them retreating back home. Thankfully, a group of concerned citizens and stakeholders banded together to make a change. Now our lake is again living up to its “Clear” name, seeing the return of vegetation, and hosting one of the Midwest’s premier fishing opportunities. By working to protect and clean up the water entering Clear Lake, we have started to reverse decades of damage done by soil and
nutrient pollution. That has resulted in an exceptional fishery that pulls in anglers from all across the Midwest. An average year of fishing walleyes on Clear Lake will yield about 5,500 keepers, however, in recent years anglers are taking home in excess of 12,000 walleyes per year. That is on top of 125,000 yellow bass. Opportunities like that do not come along without a coalition of folks working to protect and enhance our lake. The CLEAR Project is a grassroots effort to promote sustainable land use, reduce water pollution, and ensure that our valuable lake resources are here for generations to come. By promoting smart stormwater management within our urban areas, and sustainable farming practices on our crop fields, we help landowners play a crucial role in protecting our lake. By leveraging local, state, and federal grants, we can provide both technical and financial support to anyone willing to make a change. Since the early 2000’s, those partners have helped to leverage over $20 million towards those goals. That level of commitment and investment by the community is why Clear Lake will remain one of the premier fishing and recreation destinations across the Midwest for years to come.
I have lived and worked in a number of lake communities across the Midwest over the past 15 years, but when my family and I landed in Clear Lake we found something different. We found a community that genuinely cares about the lake and the natural resources of the area. That attitude makes my work of protecting the lake so much more fun and exciting.

I grew up here, graduated from CLHS in 2004. I left briefly but soon figured out there is no place quite like Clear Lake. It has all of the charm of a small town combined with all of the excitement a large resort destination has to offer. Shopping, dining, world class entertainment at The Surf, Winter Dance Party, Thursday’s on Main, Christmas By The Lake and the best darn 4th of July Celebration in the whole USA... I can’t think of any other place with *so many things* to do year round. We are incredibly lucky to live here and we’re proud to raise our children, live and have our business here.

Our children and their families are enjoying the local events, including their all time favorite, Christmas on the Lake! There is always something fun going on in Clear Lake.

Summertime does give us a bit of a break, being able to fire up the grill and all. STARBOARD MARKET First up… Starboard Market. If you haven’t been to this sandwich shop extraordinaire, you are missing out! It might be a bit overwhelming at first glance of their ginormous sandwich board, but have no fear, you cannot go wrong with anything from Starboard Market. Get moving!
Have you ever sat on a boat in the center of Clear Lake and looked around? The sight is surely one to behold; colors bleed from every angle as the beauty cocoons you into peaceful oblivion. Lush trees sway in the gentle breeze. Wooden docks jut into the water, lined with jet skis and boats, paddleboats and Lily Pads, all enjoyed on our gorgeous lake. The sand beaches at City and State park are dotted with patrons catching some sun, building a sand castle, or cooling off from the heat with a swim. The great outdoors are literally all around us. And Clear Lake is one of the best! So what’s there to do while you’re at the Lake? Well… you definitely don’t want to be sitting inside, glued to a television or your phone. No way. The lake is made for fresh air and fun, so here are a few things to look for to get up, get out, and get moving! For the super-active folks, Clear Lake is a very bike-friendly community. You’ll often see bikers pedaling along North Shore before making their way to the bike path along the Grade in Ventura. Continuing on that route, you can swing onto South Shore to complete your trip around the Lake. It’s a great way to enjoy the scenic views while getting exercise – WIN! And those who prefer their outdoor activities on foot, we have a plethora of organized runs just for you! The Lights on 5K, Fam Bam Color Jam, Earth Day 5K/10K, CLDT Glo-Run/Walk, and the Champagne 5K. These events are made for everyone to enjoy; whether you’re a hard-core runner going for the gold or prefer to walk the course. No judgement here – just encouragement for everyone involved! Now, if you’re a lover of both biking and running you might be interested in TRI Clear Lake. In its 3rd year, this event has proven to be one of the top sprint triathlon races in the area. The race takes

place on Saturday, June 8th, with a 750 meter open water swim at State Beach, and a 12.4 mile jaunt on the bicycle, and then finished with a 3.1 mile run. A highlight of this event is the awesome finishline party held in our beautiful City Park. For more information or to register online go to www.triclearlkeia.com. Myself, I’m more of a ‘life in the slow lane’ type of person. There’s nothing I enjoy more than a cruise along the shoreline of Clear Lake on my paddleboard. Imagine my excitement when Paddlefest kicked off their inaugural year last season. This event, held the last weekend in July, is a great way to explore the shores of our spectacular lake on a kayak, canoe, or stand up paddle board. There are also three options to choose from on race day: a 1-mile sprint race, a 5K short course, or a 10K long course. Just pick the best fit for your skill level and come on out! In all honestly, being active and health-conscious doesn’t mean you have to be a hard-core competitor. The Parks & Rec department offers a wide variety of laid-back activities for children and adults to enjoy the great outdoors. You can check them out at www.cityofclearlake.com.
Clear Lake is the absolute best place for our family… it boasts amazing schools that are just the right size for our children to be involved, yet challenged & is also full of life with entertainment, athletic opportunities & outdoor activities for all ages. Take a walk in one of our many parks, or go for a stroll along the shore. Being outside and being active is so good for your well-being; relieving stress and energizing. Just being outside in the fresh air, enjoying the many opportunities Clear Lake has to offer is enough. Remember… all you need to do is get up, get out and get moving. Reminiscent of the Good Old Days Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Winter Dance Party By Rachel Smith
It’s a tale as old as time in North Iowa – or at least for the past sixty years. What was scheduled to be a brief rock & roll tour of the Mid-Western United States soon became one of the most influential and iconic tragedies in the history of music.
But the plane never made it. The lives of the three musicians and pilot Rodger Peterson lost forever after they crashed into a snowcovered field just north of Clear Lake, causing the history of rock & roll to be forever altered.
As the young musicians zig-zagged their way from venue to venue, the performers soon realized the closely-booked performances weren’t such a great idea. Several degrees below zero, blistering cold temperatures, and dreadful freezing wind chills – all on a bus with a broken heater.
Many say Don McLean’s famous track, “American Pie” was written to pay homage to this tragic event, dubbing it The Day the Music Died.
Originally set for 24 appearances during January and February, tragedy struck mid-way through, after the group’s show at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa. Buddy Holly, J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson, and Ritchie Valens boarded a small aircraft to fly them from Mason City to their next show.
But rock & roll lives on in Clear Lake. And just as other musicians pitched in to finish out the Winter Dance Party sixty years ago, we too, today, do what we can to keep their spirit alive. In 1979, with the vision and help of on-air personality, The Mad Hatter, the Surf Ballroom began hosting a yearly tribute concert. Rock & roll enthusiasts, donning their poodle skirts and leather jackets, descended upon our great venue to remember, to honor. To celebrate the music, and to celebrate the lives and lost talent of our three fallen stars. This year, as we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Winter Dance Party, the Surf has lined up a star-studded array of legends, featuring many rock & roll greats and a long list of artists who have followed in the footsteps of their musical lineage… to present a tribute to the first generation of rock & roll.
“Saturday evening’s show is a bit like a time capsule,” said Laurie Lietz, Executive Director of The Surf Ballroom & Museum and Winter Dance Party Event Coordinator. “These are the voices and this is the music that defined a generation, and we think that’s worth celebrating,” Lietz concluded. Scheduled to appear at Saturday evening’s show are: Chubby Checker and The Wildcats, Albert Lee and Friends, Shirley Alston Reeves: the Original Lead Singer of The Shirelles, The Chiffons, Brian Hyland, Chris Montez, Johnny Tillotson and The Holy Rocka Rollaz. This show, this tribute concert, holds a special place for the people in this town. Because February 3, 1959 may have been the day the music died for the rest of the World, but not in Clear Lake. Here, the music lives on. It lives in the hearts of our young children, who learn the history and celebrate the artists. It lives in the minds of each individual, who travels near and far to visit the memorial crash site. It lives inside the Surf Ballroom. Forever.
It kicks off Wednesday, January 30th with the Family Sock Hop featuring the Whitesidewalls. They’ve been a staple of the tribute weekend, performing for 15 years. The Thursday night lineup features Jay & The American, Little Anthony and The Imperials, Robin Luke, and The Good Clear Fun Band. A Rock ‘n Roll Royalty Show, highlighting the families of musical pioneers who celebrate their rock ‘n roll heritage, will be the theme for Friday evening’s show. Edan Everly with Albert Lee, Frank Avalon, Wendy and Carnie Wilson, The Killer Vees, Linda Gail Lewis with Danny B. Harvey & Annie Marie Lewis, Austin Allsup, Bobby Cochran, Craig Westover featuring James Popenhagen, and Mario Ramirez are all scheduled to appear.

When you think about leisurely flying a kite, what images come to mind? Sunny skies with a nice breeze? Traipsing through an open field or perhaps on a beach? What about bundled up in winter gear on a frozen lake in Middle America? That last scenario seems a bit out of the ordinary, would you agree? What if I told you that, every winter, the Color the Wind Kite Festival takes place in Clear Lake, Iowa, ON frozen Clear Lake?
Before the festival officially began on Saturday morning, the Clear Lake Arts Center held a kids’ kite-making workshop. Participating children designed and colored their very own kites to fly along with the experts down at the lake. My kids were so excited and all of the kids really did an awesome job. The workshop volunteers were extremely friendly and helpful. It was such a lovely experience for my family and me.
Larry and Kay Day are the husband-and-wife team behind Color the Wind. They both are kite enthusiasts and have lived in Clear Lake, Iowa, since 1969. They wanted to give back to the community they care so much about, so the idea for the Color the Wind Kite Festival was born.
From the Arts Center, we walked down to the lake as the festival was getting started. As we turned a corner toward the breakwall, the dozens of kites came into view. It was seriously jaw-dropping. The splashes of color high in the sky were in stark contrast to the gray-white background. From our vantage point, the cables and anchors keeping the kites afloat were not visible, so such a sight – the kites seemingly suspended in midair – was slightly eerie but definitely fascinating.
The first Color the Wind Kite Festival took place in 2001. It was intended to be an annual event but sometimes Mother Nature does not cooperate. Luckily for my family and me, this year’s conditions were favorable and we were able to experience the colorful festival. The fun began on Friday evening, February 16th, with the Meet the Kite Flyers Reception at Clear Lake Arts Center. The event was open to the public and allowed organizers, participants, and spectators to mingle and create more excitement for the next day’s festivities. There was even more buzz in the crowd this year as the CBS Sunday Morning team, including correspondent Lee Cowan, was in attendance. They were there to cover Color the Wind for a piece that is scheduled to air on CBS Sunday Morning on March 25th. (See? Word really is getting out about Clear Lake!)

My kids were anxious to get down on the frozen lake and fly their own kites. They both did very well until my son (who’s only 4) accidentally let go of his kite and it flew away. His disappointment didn’t last long, though, as all the colorful kites and excitement on the lake distracted him. We traversed the frozen lake for some time to get up close and under all the kites. With approximately 50 kite flyers and kite choreographers from around the U.S., and an estimated 10,000 spectators, there was so much to take in!
• Be prepared for cold weather and dress accordingly. Yes, it’s winter. Yes, it’s cold. But if you’re properly bundled-up, the weather will not impede the fun. I recommend a well-insulated coat atop a layer or two of thinner clothing; snow pants or bibs; and warm socks and boots. • Consider ice grips for your shoes/boots. Walking on an icy, frozen lake can be challenging so you’ll be thankful for the additional traction. I managed to stay upright without the cleats but still wished I’d had a pair. • Bring a sled or wagon for the kids. I saw so many families towing their kids in sleds and wagons. I was disappointed that I hadn’t thought of it, especially when my son started moaning that he was tired and didn’t want to walk anymore.

It’s no secret that nautical terms are used frequently in and around Clear Lake. To ‘Drop your Anchor’ is a common term used in boating. When a boat comes into shore, or wished to remain in one area while on the water, you would drop your anchor into the water, securing yourself to a designated area. It seems fitting, then, that we recognize these two incredible businesses who have dropped their anchor here, but then spread their wings and launched their product into other markets. Brad and Angie Barber had always dreamed of creating roots in the Clear Lake community, and did just that in 2002 when they opened the first Cabin Coffee Company. The concept, derived on a drive home from Des Moines after getting coffee and bagels, was a place where folks could get a high-quality cup of coffee in a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Bob Rolling has always enjoyed a good beer. So much, in fact, that he began tinkering with brewing his own beer, giving it to friends and family to try. Soon, his hobby turned into a business idea and thus came the formulation of Lake Time Brewery.
In fact, that’s their motto!
And boy, have they done just that. As you enter Cabin Coffee, located near the corner of S. 3rd Street and Main, you step into a realm of comfort. A place full of warm smiles and friendly service
But what is really remarkable about their story, is that while they are firmly anchored in Clear Lake, you can find Cabin Coffee stores in 5 other states! Other than Iowa, they currently have 16 locations in total throughout Colorado, Georgia, Indiana, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Recently, Cabin Coffee built a roasting house to handle their large demand. And while they roast the majority of their supply for franchises there, each location roasts their own single origin and blends on site, giving each customer the ultimate coffee flavor.
Located on the corner of Main & 8th Street, Lake Time opened their doors in June of 2013. Bob and his wife, Suzy, decided they wanted their name to really reflect the lake lifestyle. BREWS BEACH on the
Lake Time Brewery is the proud event host of Brews on the Beach, a collaboration with various breweries throughout Iowa. The event runs in conjunction with the annual Bicycle, Blues & BBQ event, typically held the first weekend in July. With each ticket purchase, patrons receive a tasting glass and unlimited samples of craft brews. It’s a great afternoon with, of course, the best possible scenery as its backdrop – gorgeous Clear Lake!

It wasn’t long before Lake Time garnered a devoted following of craft beer enthusiasts. In fact, they’d simply fulfilled their motto of “Creating Beer Snobs… One Beer at a Time!” But with this expanded need to supply beer to more and more people posed to be difficult, and Bob soon found he could not keep up with the demand. In order to give the people what they wanted (more beer), Lake Time expanded into a new production facility and hired Brandon Nelson, a professional brewer from Spokane, Washington. In the spring of 2018, a canning line was added to the facility, making great craft beer available whenever you’d like. Currently available in 23 counties in the Northeast portion of Iowa and 6 counties in and around the Des Moines area, lovers of Bob’s famous brews can grab a six-pack to enjoy at home. Or, for those dining around North Iowa, many local eateries carry the Lake Time beer on tap. Lake Time Brewery is a fabulous business anchored in Clear Lake, but forging full-steam ahead into the business frontier!

We vacationed in Clear Lake when our girls were young. We returned for a week this past summer with our grown girls, a son-in-law, and grandson. Most tourists buy hats or t-shirts, but we bought a cottage! We can use it year-round and look forward to experiencing each season at the lake!

Relocating to a new place can be scary, especially for kids starting a new school. The Clear Lake education system will help provide a seamless transition. Beginning at the elementary level, our students not only receive an exceptional education, but are taught the Lion Pride Motto. Focus is placed on students to “do what is right, do your best, and treat others nicely.” As they grow, our Middle School students are creating innovative, imaginative, and inventive technologies with STEM in the Maker Space classroom.

We moved to Clear Lake from NW Iowa to shorten my husband’s commute. Clear Lake was to be a temporary place while we solidified our plans to move out of state. Instead, we fell in love with Clear Lake. The lake, festivals, the variety of home designs, the restaurants, the volunteers and the city leaders all make Clear Lake a place that we’re happy to call home.
In high school, Lion Pride beams through our student-athletes as they push themselves to become the best in the state. In 2019, we are excited to announce the addition of an FFA program, and look forward to watching our students grow and reach their highest potential. Clear Lake – a great place to stay and play. -Doug Gee, Clear Lake Schools Superintendent Clear Lake school district is poised to be one of the top schools in the state. The district is implementing STEM/PLTW courses starting in the preschool and continuing them through middle school and into the high school. Clear Lake also started a computer science program at the high school this fall, and will start a new AG/FFA program in the fall of 2019. It is one of the few school districts in northern Iowa that has chosen to continue to grow their programs to meet the needs of all students. Clear Lake has a strong reputation academically and athletically and meets the needs of all students.

During the Summer of 1966, Darlene and I arrived in Clear Lake. I had never been here before and Darlene had only visited here once. Needless to say we were and felt like newbies! I was born and raised in NJ and Darlene was a native of Washington, in southeast Iowa. We had all of our possessions in the back of our 1966 American Motors Rambler! After staying a week in the Swan Motel, we finally settled into a 2 bedroom cottage rental on North Shore.

I had signed a contract with the Clear Lake Schools to teach in the elementary school that coming Fall. Since there were a few weeks before school started, we did some exploring around the town and the surrounding area. We both thought that this town and area would be a Good Start in our careers. However, we’re convinced that in two years we, most likely, would move on!
As we journeyed on through and past two years, we realized that we were becoming attached to Clear Lake! Looking back - we loved the small town; we loved the beautiful lake; we loved our home (we have moved 3 times); we loved our school teacher friends; we loved our jobs; our 3 children were having a positive experience as students in the Clear Lake School System; there were many things to do throughout the four seasons; and the people within the community were super friendly! So, here we are 52 years later - veteran citizens of the City of Clear Lake, and loving every day as residents of this fantastic community. As the City logo states: Where People Make A Difference!
