I’ve been a homeschooling mum for many years, and one of my favourite things is reading about historical heroes. Through the years I was amazed by how many historical stories involved prayer. For example, did you know that three days before Christopher Columbus found land his crew revolted and wanted to turn around? Columbus prayed about it and felt impressed to

The Hiding Place is one of my favorite books, but until I started researching more I had no idea that her family had been praying for the Jewish people for one hundred years. The prayers of generations influenced Corrie’s actions and faith during one of the hardest times in history. I love that!

How do you see this inspiring readers to pray?

I hope readers will be more active to pray in their own lives. I hope they also see that God desires to do more than they dare hope or imagine. God chooses ordinary people to do His greatest work on earth. This should inspire us all!

Daniel loved God. Daniel also loved the king. Daniel was good and loyal and true – and he prayed three times every day to God. Now there were some men who were jealous of Daniel because king knew that he was good the and loyal and true. The men thought up a nasty trick.

‘Make a new law,’ the men told the king. ‘Make everyone pray to you alone – because you are awesome and amazing and wonderful.’

The king was flattered. The king was foolish.

‘Oh – and if anyone does not obey this law, you could throw them to the lions …’

But Daniel loved God. Daniel was good and loyal and true.

Daniel knew that God alone was awesome and amazing and wonderful – and he prayed to God just the same, three times every day.

The jealous men told the king about Daniel. The king had no choice but to obey his new law. Daniel was thrown to the lions!

The next day the king went to the lions’ den. He was very pleased when Daniel called out to him.

‘Hello, mighty King! Don’t worry – God has saved me from the lions!’

When he died God asked Joshua to lead His people out of the desert and into Canaan.

Joshua took the people across the River Jordan, but when they reached the city of Jericho, they were frightened by the strong, high walls and the fierce, unfriendly people.

How could they get through the city?

God told Joshua that they must march around the walls for six days while the priests blew on trumpets. On the seventh day, they must march around the city not once, not twice, but seven times!

So the people did as Joshua told them. When the priests blew their trumpets … and all the people shouted … the walls of the city tumbled to the ground!
