September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

In the last 40 years thanks to the research funded by CLCRF into childhood cancer, there has been a drastic increase in survival rates.

GO GOLD FOR CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time to put the spotlight on children’s cancer and the need to improve diagnosis, treatment and outcomes.

You can help the Foundation to raise awareness for childhood cancer research by going gold! Gold is the international colour of childhood cancer awareness, with many supporters choosing to wear a gold ribbon during September.

During the month, childhood cancer champions, advocates and supporters encourage iconic buildings, historic landmarks, monuments, bridges and natural environments to go gold. Whether lighting up gold or by displaying gold ribbons, the global effort is making a difference. We’d love for you to be ‘Our Champions’.

You can show your support for all children fighting cancer and their families by wearing a gold ribbon purchased from CLCRF. Our combined efforts will raise awareness and improve future outcomes for children diagnosed with cancer!

MARLEY 9 YEARS ON 9 years ago, single mother Kerrin Hampson received the heartbreaking news that her 15-month-old son Marley had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia.

The news came after Kerrin had enough of doctors telling her that there was nothing wrong with her son, that his lethargy and loss of appetite was caused by a virus that he would just have to ride out.

Kerrin’s mothers’ instinct led her to take Marley to the hospital despite what the doctors had told her.

“I remember it like it was yesterday,” said Kerrin. “I fed myself, Morris and his sister, made sure they were cared for

and then drove to Fremantle ED. The nurse looked at Marley and called the on-call paediatrician straight away. He was quite concerned.”

After his diagnosis on 1 July 2010, Marley was taken directly to the children’s hospital by ambulance, being too fragile for Kerrin to drive him herself. The next three years saw Marley undergo intense therapies which left him tired and ill.

His treatment finished in August 2013 but he is still dealing with the side effects to this day. The harsh treatment has left Marley with cognitive and executive functioning issues, needing the help of tutors and occupational therapy.

“9 years later he had a weekend of adventure and friends. He has scars that run deeper than I thought possible, and still struggles but he is here,” said a grateful Kerrin. “We are lucky. I will bang on until the end of time

Marley continues to be an ambassador for CLCRF and has attended several functions over the years with his mum and brother to help raise awareness for cancer research.

CLCRF FAMILY NIGHT OUT Join us for a fun-filled family evening supporting children’s cancer research

Sweet sounds take centre stage at the Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research Foundation’s (CLCRF) big family event of the year.

The CLCRF Family Night Out at Gloucester Park on Saturday, November 9, features the exceptional Perth Symphony Orchestra (PSO) performing two sets of their family favourites.

Kids get free entry while adult tickets are $45. Proceeds from Family Night Out support the outstanding work of the CLCRF, which raises funds for research into childhood cancers.

As well as hearing the world-class PSO perform, families can revel in the festive spirit while supporting a worthwhile cause.

They can bring their own picnic (no BYO alcohol) or enjoy a meal from a variety of food trucks on site. Fun children’s activities include face painting, bubbles, cuddly animal farm, bouncy castles and more!

Event organiser Kylie Dalton said the Family Night Out is about everyone having fun.

“The event was created many years ago, not as a fundraising opportunity but a family event to share with those who need it most,” she said. “Our whole focus is on bringing families from over WA to share in the music.”

The PSO’s song list includes all-time favourites from shows Frozen, The Lion King and The Greatest Showman and songs originally performed by Katy Perry, David Bowie and Taylor Swift.

The supporting act is popular local musician JAX. Cancer is the leading cause of death from disease in Australian children. One in 500 kids will develop cancer before they reach their 15th birthday. As CLCRF receives no government funding, it relies on community support – especially the money it can raise at events such as the Family Night Out. Gates open at 4.30pm, with the musical acts starting at 5.30pm.

SOUTH WEST BIKE TREK After having huge success in previous years, we are so excited for the South West Bike Trek to be back in 2019! The South West Bike Trek is set to commence on Sunday 13 October in Subiaco near the Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research Foundation office and it will finish in Augusta on Saturday 19 October.

The wonderful event has once again been organised by trek co-coordinator and CLCRF member, Eric Maddock, with the help of Lions and Rotary Clubs and is expected to follow the schedule below: Day 1 Sunday 13 October – Subiaco to Fairbridge Day 2 Monday 14 October – Fairbridge to Preston then back to Fairbridge Day 3 Tuesday 15 October – Fairbridge to Harvey Day 4 Wednesday 16 October – Harvey to Eaton Day 5 Thursday 17 October – Eaton to Busselton Day 6 Friday 18 October – Busselton to Margaret River Day 7 Saturday 19 October – Margaret River to Augusta Please remember that this trek is a charity bike ride that will be conducted at a leisurely pace, although all riders need to be able to ride at least 20kph. The trek is not a race in any form and the group will work together to ensure each other’s wellbeing. Last year the Southwest Bike Trek raised an incredible $36,376 for CLCRF and over the years it has raised close to $700,000 in total! This year the target to reach is $40,000.

Costs: There is a daily cost of $30 which covers meals, accommodation, fuel and other expenses. If you participate in the entire ride Sunday to Saturday it’s a total of $175. The sponsorship component minimum that is required but not limited to, is $300 if you wish to take part in the entire trek or $100 for one section/day.

GENEROUS DONATION FROM FRANKLIN TATE ESTATES CLCRF would like to thank Franklin Tate Estates for the generous gift we received from their winery. The Tate family have kindly donated selected cartons of their award-winning wines for the Foundation to use at upcoming functions and events.

The Tate family have been making wine since 1969 and have vineyards located in the heart of the Margaret River region. They have become Margaret River’s most well-known winery and have been twice awarded “Most Outstanding Red Wine in the World” at the Wine Magazine International Wine Challenge.

CLCRF runs events throughout the year to help raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer research, so this donation will be extremely useful!

70% of Australians are unaware that more kids die from cancer than any other disease in this country.

TWEAKING IMMUNOTHERAPY TO TACKLE SARCOMA HEAD-ON

CLCRF are so proud to be working with Sock it to Sarcoma to help fund research into sarcoma at the Telethon Kids Institute.

Sarcoma is a form of cancer that occurs in the bones and soft tissues such as fat and muscle. Despite making up 15-20% of cancers in children, sarcoma is still relatively unknown and under-researched.

Funds raised through the Foundation have allowed researchers to develop a way to tweak immunotherapy to allow for more effective treatment for sarcoma. This is an important step in tackling the cancer because, despite treatment with chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy, sarcoma sees a substantial rate of relapse in children.

“There is no one else in Australia really doing this therapeutic work,” says Professor Terry Johns, head of Telethon Kids Cancer Centre. “The current treatments are also very nasty and aggressive, and if we can improve them so children don’t have to have such horrible chemo-therapy then that would also be useful.”

The Foundation is glad to be helping fund this important research in order to improve the treatment and survival rates for children battling sarcoma. Donations made to CLCRF will help to continue this important research into childhood cancer so that future generations can live cancer free.

TEDDY’S LOVING GIFT IN WILL Esma Mary Cormack or Teddy as she was known, recently left a Gift in Will of over $30,000 to the Children’s Leukaemia and Cancer Research Foundation.

Teddy was 90 years young when she passed away in September 2017.

Some years following Debbie’s death, the family moved to Western Australia. Upon making out her Will several years later, the solicitor suggested that Teddy consider leaving a Gift in Will to a children’s charity.

Teddy was excited to think that she could make a difference for children and babies who were very sick and in pain.

It was suggested that CLCRF was a good fit for her wishes as the Foundation funds research into childhood cancer. The goal of this research funded by the Foundation for over 37 years has been to find better protocols for treatment of young children. A Gift in Will such as this will go a long way to help make that happen.

Teddy had two daughters eight years apart, Sue and Debbie. Debbie passed away at six years of age, after a very long illness back in the 1950s. She was born with a severe liver disease and deformity, with no prospect of a cure.

This experience as a parent formed the basis of Teddy’s desire to support and help the most vulnerable.

This was Teddy’s legacy in remembrance of a cheerful little girl named Deborah Jayne.

The Children’s Leukaemia and Cancer Research Foundation are very grateful for Teddy’s generous gift.

CLCRF is a member of Include A Charity (IAC) which is a social change campaign of

the Fundraising Institute Australia (FIA). The IAC are a collaboration of over 100 charities in Australia, who cover a broad spectrum of causes and aspects of the community.

The goal is to encourage more people to leave a charitable gift in their Will, increasing the funds invested in the sector and thereby increasing the positive impact charities all have on society.

By working together, IAC members can change charitable giving forever so that over time, gifts in Wills become the norm for many rather than just a few. HERO HUNTER AND THE WONKY WHITE CELLS When a child is diagnosed with cancer, understanding what is happening can be very overwhelming, not only for the child but for their family, friends and other children around them.

Hunter’s godmother, Sarah Stanley, has helped to make this discussion a little easier for children by creating the wonderful book titled Hero Hunter and the Wonky White Cells.

Sarah initially created the book for Hunter but it soon became apparent that the book might have a wider audience, as it was an easy way for other children and even parents to understand what children with leukaemia go through.

Hero Hunter and the Wonky White Cells explores the science and journey of childhood leukaemia, from diagnosis to treatment. The book uses easy to understand analogies to describe complex concepts, well complimented by Sarah’s illustrations.

As a General Practitioner, Sarah said creating this book was the perfect trinity of her passions of medicine, education and creativity - along with the underlying importance of family.

It was important for Sarah to create all aspects of the book, including the illustrations. “I wanted to demonstrate the medical side to treatment in its realness, so when children see these things in hospital they are prepared and it’s not as scary,” she said.

“I hope it can help young children to better understand leukaemia. It has already done the number one job, which was to help Hunter,” stated Sarah.

RECORD BREAKING AMOUNT RAISED AT QUIZ NIGHT $17,354 Raised This year’s Keep the Flame Alive Quiz Night was a roaring success, with a total of $17,354 raised for child cancer research! This well and truly smashed last year’s total of $16,000.

A fantastic night was had by all and with so many games and giveaways throughout the night, there was hardly anyone who went home empty-handed!

“We had a great turn out for our third quiz night at the Perth Football Club.

Everyone had a stimulating night and most went home with either a raffle prize or silent auction items,” said CEO Andrea Alexander.

The winners of the night came down to a nail-biting tie breaker round between Table 3 and Table 1. A big congratulations to Table 3 who came away with the title!

We were so impressed with the amount of smart minds in the room, with about 4 tables finishing very close to the winning score.

Shout out to Table 10 who were the wooden-spooners of the night and walked away with – you guessed it wooden spoons (and chocolate too of course).

As is the case with any successful event, there are a lot of people we need to thank who helped make it possible. We would firstly like to thank everyone who came along and helped us make the night so memorable. We hope all the attendees had just as much fun participating in the quiz night as we did running it. It was so wonderful to see a packed room full of people coming together to support such an important cause.

amazing prizes. The night definitely would not have been possible without their generosity. We had a total of 78 silent auction items and 54 raffle prizes on offer.

We would also like to thank the very energetic and entertaining Robbie Figg from the Happiness Co who donated his time for us. Robbie was an excellent MC that had everyone entertained from the very beginning right up until the end of the night. Due to overwhelmingly positive responses, he will definitely be asked to come back again next year!

A huge thank you also goes to the Perth Football Club. This was the third year the club has supported our event by kindly donating their fabulous venue.

Our volunteers also deserve a massive pat on the back for all of their efforts leading up to and during the night. The amazing volunteer team worked tirelessly to put this event together and we are so happy that we can say it has well and truly paid off for CLCRF. We are overwhelmed by the amount of support we received at the event, with all of our tables selling out a month before the event. We definitely have our work cut out for us next year if we are to smash this year’s total funds raised but we are absolutely up for the challenge.

“Our sincere thanks to all who attended, donated and worked above and beyond to make this night a success,” Andrea said. “We could not do this without you.

This year’s Toolmart Perth Tradie Expo took place over the weekend of Friday 21 to Sunday 23 of June at Ascot Racecourse.

The annual Expo is open to the general public and provides a once a year opportunity for tradies and DIY enthusiasts to purchase tools and equipment at special prices. CLCRF was fortunate enough to be invited back to the Expo this year to collect the gold coin donations on entry, along with the Desperate for Love Dog Pound Rescue.

We had a wonderful team of volunteers who helped collect these donations at the front gates and even Foundation Chairman Geoff Cattach was there to help out. We are thrilled to announce that over the three days, we were able to collect a grand total of $6,135.15, outshining last year’s total of $5,182.45!

Our volunteers deserve a big thank you for their wonderful efforts and for giving up their time to help raise funds for CLCRF. The weather wasn’t always great but that definitely didn’t dampen their spirits!

OVER $5,000 RAISED THROUGH FACEBOOK Did you know you can create your own fundraiser for CLCRF through Facebook?

Facebook’s partnership with PayPal through the PayPal Giving Fund has allowed users to set up their own fundraisers on the platform to support a charity of their choice.

This wonderful initiative was established late last year and we are so pleased to announce that so far a total of $5,940.31 has been raised for the Foundation!

We are so glad to see our supporters making use of this exciting way to fundraise! This is a particularly great initiative to help make your birthday even more meaningful, with Facebook now prompting users to create a fundraiser a couple weeks before their birthday.

If you create a birthday fundraiser, your friends will be invited to support the cause in honour of your special day.

The service allows for secure online donations and there are no fees for the organisation or individual donors, meaning 100% of the funds are distributed towards childhood cancer research when you choose CLCRF. GENEROUS RAFFLE WINNER GIVES BACK TO CLCRF Recently, we announced the winner of our $15,000 raffle prize to be ticket no. 03127. We are now thrilled to be able to share the touching story of the man behind the ticket, Brian Jennings.

Brian and his family are people that know the struggles of childhood cancer all too well, having lost their son Matthew to a rare form of leukaemia almost 40 years ago. In the hopes of future generations having better childhood cancer treatments, Brian has very kindly decided to donate $5,000 of his raffle prize money back to CLCRF. “It’s been 38 years since Matthew lost his struggle after suffering from Megakaryocytic Leukaemia and Myeloid Fibrosis, so the news of the raffle win came with mixed emotions,” expressed Brian.

“The success of the Foundation in progressing the treatment of childhood cancers has been significant and Matthew’s mother, his brothers and myself are most thankful and support [CLCRF’s] work the best we can.”

The Foundation would like to acknowledge Brian as a very deserving winner and thank him for his huge act of generosity. His $5,000 will help us to continue important research into childhood cancer.

“On a lighter note, the last raffle I won was as an 8-year-old, 66 years ago, and the prize was a clown shaped biscuit barrel. My luck has surely changed,” Brian said.

STRENGTH ENING OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH $3,236 Raised Foundation CEO Andrea Alexander recently attended a function at Optus Stadium to meet the Board Members of Beyond Bank. This was a great opportunity for the Foundation to strengthen our relationship with Beyond Bank and meet other community partners.

We would like to give a special thanks to Katie Tillson Voss and Georgina Nicholas for the invitation to the function, which also featured a guest talk by Dale Alcock.

These community partnerships are so important for CLCRF to continue the ground-breaking research into childhood cancers by helping us to raise much needed funds and awareness.

One of the most significant ways that Beyond Bank has helped us to raise funds is through their Community Reward Program, specifically their Community Reward Account. This is a unique way for supporters (both individuals and businesses) to contribute to CLCRF just by having a savings account with Beyond Bank.

The Community Reward Account allows supporters to save their money and in return CLCRF receive a Community Reward Payment, based on the

combined average annual balances of all supporter’s savings. Basically, the more you save, the more Beyond Bank will donate – at no cost to you!

As part of the Community Reward Program, CLCRF can also benefit when supporters bring their home loan to Beyond Bank or when they accept a financial plan prepared by a Beyond Bank Financial planner.

This year, Beyond Bank will be donating $600,000 back to not-for-profit community organisations, such as CLCRF. It’s wonderful to see a bank giving so much back to the community.

DONATION FROM BUNBURY ROTARY CLUB The Foundation recently received a generous donation of $2,500 from the Bunbury Rotary Club.

CLCRF Chairman Geoff Cattach was there to accept the donation at a club meeting earlier this month where he also gave a talk on the great work being done by the Foundation.

KAYAKERS RAISE $2300 FOR CLCRF Written by Greg Robertson, President of Mo55sKC:

Every year, the Bunbury Rotary Club holds a Golf Day organised through club member John Hovey and the Hovey Group, a large family owned civil construction business in Bunbury. Proceeds of the annual Golf Day are donated to local charity groups.

Donations like this are so important for helping the Foundation continue the ground-breaking research into childhood cancers. As a great way to give back to the community, this is something all community groups and organisations should consider.

CLCRF would like to sincerely thank the Bunbury Rotary Club. They have been a valuable supporter of the Foundation and we appreciate their continued generosity.

The Mo55sKC held its annual fundraiser paddling event at Mandurah’s Estuary Bridge foreshore on Monday 29 April.

A great launch point with excellent BBQ/picnic facilities; something for paddlers and landlubbers alike!

This year the Yahoo over 55’s Bushwalking Club were invited to participate and helped swell total involvement to over 70 for the event.

Despite a very blustery morning, which thwarted the planned 30km “around-the-island” paddle, kayakers ventured into sheltered waterways, and walkers enjoyed wooded tracks in the adjacent Len Howard Reserve. Afterwards, all congregated out of the wind at the BBQ area for lunch and yarns.

Mo55sKC supports CLCRF by combining proceeds from several fundraisers during the year. These funds are bolstered by great contributions from a craft club and a book club which have Mo55sKC members in their midst.

CLCRF’s money man, Kim Williamson, was at the event and gratefully accepted the $2300 cheque. Kim outlined Mo55sKC’s impressive, long-term support of CLCRF and cordially thanked all involved.

The amount raised this year is a club record, so well done Mo55sKC and friends. Your enthusiastic involvement and generosity made this a fantastic result.

DM KAYAKERS ROADS20TH DONATES YEAR OLD OFMOBILE FUNDRAISING PHONES

The wonderful students of West Leederville Primary School recently held a fundraiser to benefit CLCRF.

CLCRF would like to thank the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) Social Club for their generous donation of $455.90!

We were recently thrilled to receive a donation of old mobile phones from the lovely team at DM Roads in Maddington.

On Friday 21 June, students and staff were invited to wear their pyjamas to school and bring a gold coin donation to celebrate the Winter Solstice.

Every fortnight, the APRA Social Club sponsors a charity nominated by an APRA staff member. The Social Club then publishes a short article about the charity, calling for donations, in their employee newsletter.

Thanks to our partnership with the Aussie Recycling Program (ARP), these mobile phone parts are either reused or sold as part of their environmentally conscious zero landfill policy. Proceeds from this process then go back to CLCRF.

APRA is an independent statutory authority that supervises institutions across banking, insurance and superannuation, and is accountable to the Australian Parliament. It’s great to see the organisation giving back to the community and executing their corporate social responsibility through this wonderful initiative.

This is an excellent way for organisations to fulfil their social responsibility and we are glad we are able to continue accommodating this initiative at the Foundation. Not only is recycling old mobile phones helping raise funds for childhood cancer research, but it is also environmentally and socially responsible.

We are thrilled to announce that through this fundraising event, a total of $667.10 was raised for the Foundation.

Just by wearing their pyjamas to school, the staff and students of West Leederville Primary School have helped fund important research into childhood cancer.

This just goes to show that there are so many ways to fundraise for CLCRF and help make a difference! We would like to thank West Leederville Primary School for their support of the Foundation through this fun initiative.

HUNTER REACHES A MILESTONE ON HIS ROAD TO RECOVERY We received some great news earlier this year with six-yearold Hunter reaching a special milestone in his cancer treatment and being the first to ring Perth Children’s Hospital’s new treatment bell.

Friday 3 May marked 100 days since Hunter’s life-saving bone marrow transplant. On the very same day, the oncology ward at Perth’s Children’s Hospital unveiled its first ever treatment bell.

“The bell is a symbol that’s rung at the end of treatment to recognise everything that the child and the family has gone through in their cancer journey,” said Dr Annie Ryan, Paediatric Oncologist.

The first 100 days after a bone marrow transplant are said to be the most critical and although Hunter is not in the clear yet, the end of his tough road to recovery is now in sight. This was excellent news for Hunter’s family who were devastated last September when Hunter relapsed after almost two years of treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Hunter celebrated this big achievement with a limo ride and a swim in his friend’s pool. This was the first time Hunter has been healthy enough to swim since his diagnosis at the age of three.

By helping fund the important research into childhood cancer at CLCRF, more children like Hunter can reach milestones in their cancer treatment journeys.
