How to Register for Personal Enrichment Classes 1. Apply for Admission New students and students who have not attended classes in two years must apply for admission in one of three ways: IN PERSON: Admissions and Records Office, Room B101, Grayslake campus

2. Obtain CLC ID Number Allow two working days to process your application.

You will receive your CLC student ID number, PIN and other important registration information in the mail. You may also look up your CLC student ID number via the Web at www.clcillinois.edu/register. Click on the “Create myLogin” links and then click on “Look Up CLC ID.” Your PIN is a number that is initially set to your six-digit date of birth (mmddyy). Your ID and PIN will give you access to myStudentCenter, our student self-service system.

3. Register for Personal Enrichment Classes

By Internet www.clcillinois.edu/register When you are ready to select your classes, use the “CLC Classes by Term.” You must specify the semester and then a subject, such as English, to view the classes available. To select a subject area, click on the magnifying glass and then press the “Look Up” button. When you find a specific class section you want, make note of the four-digit class number.

You may register on the Web or in person in the Admissions office, B101, Grayslake campus, the Student Services office at Lakeshore or the main office at the Southlake Educational Center.

Online Self-Service requires that you have created myLogin. Once you have logged in, use the menu of options to add or drop classes or to view your schedule, grades or an unofficial transcript and many other options. When you add or drop a class, check for a “success” or “error” message. Most errors are due to enrollment holds or prerequisites not met.

4. Pay Tuition and Fees To avoid being dropped from classes for non-payment, you must pay in full or enroll in the college’s FACTS installment tuition payment plan by your due date.

Check the amount of your bill online by logging into myStudentCenter and selecting the “Make a Payment” link. Financial aid is not available for Continuing Education classes. Compare WordPad options (similar to Word 2003), learn to use the MS 2007 ribbon interface to create a document, change MS Word options, edit (copy, paste and cut) and create documents to fit your needs, including flyers, posters, business cards and greeting cards.

Dance BEGINNING BALLROOM DANCING If you're getting married or going on a cruise, you will want to learn the basics of ballroom dances. Classic dances are always in vogue, as demonstrated on the TV show “Dancing with the Stars.” Instruction includes fox trot, waltz, cha cha and tango. A partner is recommended. DIGITAL FILMMAKING (GRADES 6-9) Learn visual storytelling through hands-on video creation. Using Final Cut Pro software, you'll learn how to produce, write, tape and edit videos. Recreational Safety BOATING SAFETY (AGES 12-17) Presented as a public service by the Waukegan Sail & Power Squadron, a unit of the U.S. Power Squadrons.

Sessions include the following topics: boating on inland lakes and waterways (terminology, equipment, regulations, boat handling and emergency conditions); boating on open water, such as Lake Michigan (nautical charts, magnetic compass, plotting and basic piloting); reviews; and an exam. Students completing the first six sessions and passing the exam earn an Illinois boating safety education card. Programs for Adult Learners with a Young Attitude

Quest is part of the Discovery program for 50+ adults. It is a four-day seminar featuring indepth learning on a topic of interest. Quest topics for summer 2011 are “America Between the World Wars: 1920s and 1930s,” June 13-16, and “The State of the Nation,” July 11-14. A discount is available for those who enroll in both the June and July Quests. To receive this discount, enroll in sections 001 and 003.

America Between the World Wars: 1920s and 1930s - June 13-16 Explore the major events and artistic contributions that impacted American life during two decades of prosperity, challenge and change between World War I and World War II.

MONDAY FROM RICHES TO RAGS: A HISTORICAL OVERVIEW OF THE 1920S AND 1930S The 23 years between the wars include many historical contrasts: the president who was proud to do nothing and the president who was proud to change our political landscape in 100 days; a constitutional amendment that enacted a wonderful social policy (women's right to vote) and an amendment that enacted a social policy so corrupt it had to be reversed (prohibition); economic expansion in the Roaring ’20s and economic contraction in the Great Depression of the ’30s. In our opening lecture we will make sense of these and other contrasts.

Speaker: Gary Midkiff teaches graduate students, undergraduate students and adult learners in the areas of business management and American history for six Chicago-area colleges and universities, including the College of Lake County.

LAUNCHING THE GOLDEN AGE OF RADIO Radio became a broadcast media in the 1920s and maintained its place as the dominant home entertainment system until the 1950s. What enabled the expansion of radio use? What role did radio stations play in the ’20s and ’30s and what resources did they use to fill broadcast time? Enjoy excerpts of past programming and discuss how it compares with that of today.

Speaker: Burt Burdeen has taught for Columbia College as adjunct faculty in the radio department for over 30 years. He is a freelance announcer, producer, consultant and former program director at several Chicago stations.

LITERATURE: A REVOLUTION IN STYLE The 1920s and 1930s were pivotal periods in American literature, reflecting innovative narrative styles and surprising topics. Seeking to establish a unique style, authors resisted the old European influences and created new American voices. We’ll introduce titles by well-known and lesser-known authors, listen to some of their work in their own voices and explore the influences of music and visual art on American literature.

Speaker: Mary Ann Bretzlauf is a full-time faculty member of the English department at the College of Lake County, a recipient of the NISOD Excellence Award in 2011 and CLC Faculty Member of the Year in 2004.

MODERN AMERICAN ART OF THE INTERWAR YEARS: A STUDY IN CONTRASTS With the prosperity of post-WWI America and the proliferation of machines, Americans raised industry and consumerism to a national religion. Artists of the ’20s, like Murphy, Demuth and O’Keeffe, captured this new national identity. However, with the collapse of business and the ensuing depression of the ’30s, Americans returned to their roots - the land and its people - for national pride. Roonebeck, Benton, Bishop and others captured this rediscovered national identity.

Speaker: Cindy Lewis is an independent scholar and Discovery! lecturer on artists, art history and American history. In addition, she is both adjunct faculty and lead consultant for employee development for the College of Lake County.

CHAPLIN AND KEATON: MIRRORS OF REALITY Some of the most serious social criticism of the 1920s came from two comics whose profound statements about such topics as classism, poverty and prohibition were made without uttering a single word. We’ll screen and discuss short films by two of the greatest cinematic artists and see why they agreed with F. Scott Fitzgerald who said, “Let me tell you about the rich.

They are different from you and me.”

Speaker: John Kupetz is an English and journalism instructor at the College of Lake County and teaches classic cinema classes for the Discovery! program.

GANGLAND CHICAGO AT THE MOVIES We’ll set the stage for our tour of Chicago’s gangster landmarks with the 1932 film that helped set the tone for how the world views the gangster as mythic archetype, tragic hero, urban legend and, well, nightmarish sociopath. Howard Hawks’ “Scarface” created havoc among the censors by challenging viewers with how compelling evil could be. MONDAY THE FUTURE OF THE AMERICAN JURY For 225 years the jury has played a defining role in the American experiment in democracy. Today, however, the complexity of modern legal issues, the time, expense and inconvenience of jury service and new alternative means of dispute resolution have combined to threaten the continued existence of the most venerable of all American institutions: trial by jury.

Come explore the past, present and future of our jury trial system.

Speaker: Circuit Judge, Ray McKoski (retired), served for 25 years as a trial judge in Lake County, Illinois, presiding over hundreds of criminal and civil jury cases. Currently, an adjunct professor of law at The John Marshall Law School, he teaches and writes about the law and the judicial system.

THE ECONOMY: SHOW ME THE DATA In this economic update, we’ll discuss the current levels of the gross domestic product (GDP), unemployment and inflation, helping to explain the current state of the economy.

Speaker: Bob Kerr has been a professor of economics at the College of Lake County for 32 years and was a principal speaker at the 2010 Quest on Capitalism.

THE OUTSTANDING FEDERAL DEBT: AKA NATIONAL DEBT What is the national debt? Bob Kerr will discuss the composition of the federal debt to help us understand how it is defined, its composition and its implications.

WEDNESDAY HEALTHCARE AT STATE AND FEDERAL LEVELS: NOW AND INTO THE FUTURE Congress enacted a new health care law that brings a number of benefits to all Americans, including people over 50. This seminar will inform you on what’s in the law and when the different provisions take effect. In addition, current conversations on the future of Medicare, Medicaid and state level programs will be explored.

Speaker: Terri Worman is associate state director and community organizer for the Illinois AARP Office, covering northern Illinois. She works on education and advocacy projects and community organizing activities, including health care reform, financial security and community service.

PASSING OR FAILING? INFRASTRUCTURE REPORT CARD FOR ILLINOIS When the American Society of Civil Engineers released its 2009 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure, the investment need was estimated to be $2.2 trillion, $500 billion more than the 2005 estimate. Does Illinois mirror this bleak national picture?

The 2010 Report Card for Illinois Infrastructure, which includes roads, transportation, bridges, dams and drinking water, will be the focus of this discussion.

Speakers: Darren Olson is a water resources engineer and section head at Christopher B. Burke Engineering, Ltd. He currently serves as president of the Illinois section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

THURSDAY THE STATE OF EDUCATION Education is in a state of flux. A society must communicate its knowledge, skills and values to the young in order to preserve and continue the good that has been achieved in the past, but we also want education (in and out of school) to improve our society. Where are we at in achieving these goals?

Speaker: Ward Weldon is an associate professor of educational policy studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has worked in educational development projects in Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, New Zealand, Cook Islands, Korea, Russia, Germany and Ethiopia, as well as in the United States.

THE ARAB AWAKENING AND AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY What do the popular revolutions that have swept through the Middle East earlier this year portend for America's leadership position in the world? How should the United States respond to this systemic political earthquake? We’ll hear an in-depth analysis of these events and their consequences for American foreign policy.

Speaker: George Lungu is an associate professor of political science and Middle Eastern history at Oakton Community College. He participated in the 2009 Quest on Pakistan.
