Los Angeles-based trombone virtuoso Bob McChesney will perform with the CLC Monday Night Jazz Ensemble. McChesney is a fixture in the recording studios, where he has enjoyed a long career with studio orchestras, scoring hundreds of films and television shows. He can also be heard on CDs for Barbra Streisand, Shakira, Michael Bublé, Natalie Cole, Rod Stewart, Chicago, Michael Bolton and the following Grammy®winning CDs: “Ray Charles: Genius Loves Company,” Diana Krall’s “When I Look in Your Eyes” and most recently, Arturo Sandoval’s “Dear Diz,” where he was a featured soloist. Legendary composer and conductor Lalo Schifrin exclaimed, “Bob McChesney is a virtuoso and has the gift to bring us the joy of music at the highest level.” The CLC Tuesday Night Jazz Ensemble will also perform.

Dr. Robert Kvam became Dean of Fine Arts at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., in 2000 after joining the faculty as Director of the School of Music in 1997. He has served on the faculties of Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Mass.; the Army-Navy Band School in Virginia Beach, Va.; Whitman College of Walla Walla, Wash.; and Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington. He has been an active adjudicator and conductor, working with both large and small choral and instrumental ensembles. Dr. Kvam studied with Robert Fountain at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and with Elmer Thomas, John Leman and Earl Rivers at the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Kvam is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, the College Music Society, Golden Key Honor Society, the National Association of Teachers of Singing and the Indiana Music Educators Association.

Celebrate Black History Month and CLC’s 44th anniversary at the 30th Annual Salute to Gospel Music Program. This stellar event continues to showcase nothing but the industry’s best of the gospel genre, and this year is no exception. The 2014 theme is “The Evolution of the Gospel Choir, According to CLC.” The featured artist is Beverly Crawford, a much sought-after psalmist and speaker from Gainesville, Fla. She is best known for singing with the New Life Singers on “Bobby Jones Gospel.” Her latest single, “It’s About Time for A Miracle,” is blazing up the gospel charts. Also appearing are the Voices of Acme, a 50-voice choir from Chicago voted the 2008 “Best Church Choir in America” by the How Sweet the Sound Choir Competition, sponsored by Verizon Wireless. The CLC Gospel Choir, under the direction of Dr. Charles Clency, will open the program with an uplifting performance. This year, the 2014 Harambee Award of Excellence will be presented to the five lendendary directors who have led the CLC Gospel Choir over the past 30 years.

C Wing Auditorium (Room C005) Event is free and open to the community Crossing Borders Music Collective presents “Beyond the Headlines: Stories of Music, Martyrs and Multiculturalism from Uganda,” a collection of music by Ugandan composers and a multi-sensory exploration of the stories and cultures behind them. Learn about a vile king and religious martyrs and listen to the lively string quartet, “On the Way of the Cross” by Justinian Tamusuza. Take a virtual visit to the music department of Uganda’s Makerere University, where students from more than 40 ethnic groups have, with the guidance and encouragement of their teacher Tamusuza, learned to musically embrace their ethnicities by drawing on their languages, instruments and traditional music to inspire their stirring compositions. Crossing Borders Music Collective presents moving music that tells compelling stories by composers from under-represented cultures.

Earth Week Celebration April 19 – 26, 2014 Free and open to the community Earth Week is a weeklong celebration at CLC. The week’s activities include volunteer workdays, interactive programs and entertaining presentations. There will be programs geared for children and adults focusing on wildlife, environmentally friendly living and much more. Some programs will feature live animals while some may take you outside. Lakeshore Campus Conference Center One North Genesee St., Lower Level, Room 008, Waukegan Free Admission History Comes Home: Family Stories in Community is a pre-Juneteenth activity designed to engage the community in researching family history to determine ancestral roots, traditions and oral histories that can be shared in community for generations to come. Participants will learn how to collect the family stories, frame family history, create a kinship chart and link individual family history with American history.
Two sessions will be offered and both are open to the general public. This workshop series is being sponsored in part by the College of Lake County, the American Family History Institute, Trinity Universal Center and the Juneteenth Cultural Committee of Lake County.

Downtown Waukegan (corner of Madison and Genesee Streets) Free Admission Juneteenth represents the joy of freedom and is the oldest known celebration that commemorates the ending of slavery. This cultural festival will salute African American contributions to art, education, music and dance, a celebration of family, community and culture. It will salute Lake County’s contribution to the spirit of the abolition movement with inspiration, food, information and merchandise vendors, main stage performances, children’s activities, the CLC history tent and more!

Perhaps the most acclaimed film we’ve ever shown in our series (Palme d’Or at Cannes; Oscar for best foreign film; nominations for best picture, director, actress and screenplay), “Amour” is also a wonderful introduction to contemporary master Michael Haneke (“Funny Games,” “The White Ribbon”). A deceptively simple premise – an elderly couple attempts home care after the wife has a stroke – becomes devastating through its unflinching attention to detail and commentary on the true, ultimate nature of romantic commitment.
In 1988, Chilean Dictator Augusto Pinochet offers his people the appearance of democracy by allowing them to vote for his re-election. A small committee for the No vote struggle against popular apathy – until they enlist a youthful advertising executive to stir up the electorate, with hilarious, fascinating results. Director Pablo Larrain’s follow-up to our recent screening of “Tony Manero,” was summed up this way in The Globe and Mail: “Take the backroom political machinations of ‘Lincoln,’ add in the showbiz sleight of hand of ‘Argo’ and you’ll get something like ‘No’ … cunning and richly enjoyable.”
Rust and Bone (France, 2012) March 7, 2014 A timeless premise – two damaged souls falling in love – becomes a primal celebration of life thanks to director Jacques Audiard (“A Prophet”) in “Rust and Bone.” After a debilitating injury, Stephanie finds comfort and meaning with Sam, an unemployed underground boxer. Intensely physical style becomes philosophical content in a movie that was universally praised for Marion Cotillard’s frank performance. Her “proud and pleading gaze would have made her a star in the silent era, and (her) emotional yield is so unstinting that she seems to be acting a nude scene even when fully clothed.” –The New Yorker

The Act of Killing (Denmark/Indonesia, 2013) May 2, 2014 Documentarian Joshua Oppenheimer invites Indonesia’s Anwar Congo to re-enact a murderous anti-communist coup by his paramilitary group in the 1960s. Encouraged to use cinema to explain himself as he sees fit, Congo’s bizarre response – the closest his party has ever come to being held accountable for genocidal actions – is itself documented in this film. Executive produced by acclaimed filmmakers Errol Morris and Werner Herzog (“Cave of Forgotten Dreams”). As Herzog said, “I have not seen a film as powerful, surreal and frightening in at least a decade ... it is unprecedented in the history of cinema.”

Embellished Surface: Image and Pattern on Clay February 28 to April 6, 2014 A national, invitational exhibition featuring prominent artists selected for the various ways that they approach the form and surface. The clay forms might solely exist to display the rendered surface, or the surface may truly embellish the form. Reception: Friday, February 28 7-9 p.m.
The Cup II: 50 Artists, 250 Variations (Artcetera Gallery) February 28 to April 13, 2014 The Artcetera Gallery features a special invitational exhibition of handcrafted ceramic vessels from 50 ceramic artists from around the world. The Cup II is a diverse showcase of functional and non-functional cups, guest curated by Ben Bates.
Paula Palmer & Michael Brown: Digital Photography May 23 to June 27, 2014 Lake County artists Paula Palmer and Michael Brown use digital photography in very different manners. Palmer constructs compositions of disparate images that reference the four elements. Brown creates “lenticular” images that change with the viewer’s vantage point. Reception: Friday, May 23 7-9 p.m.
