Principal

ha ve explored how "Entrusted with something precious" is brought to life as we strive to be a Christ-centred community.

Our theme for 2013 has been: " Entrusted with something precious."

At its most fundamental this means th e gift of life th at each and every one of us has been given. How we live and journ ey in life provides us with choices and challenges along ou r respective pathway. Whist such a theme is at the heart of who we are, when we are united in our appreciation and valuing of the essence of life, great things can and do happen . Collectively, we

There is definite joy, compassion and energy in the ways the young women of CLC have reached out and given of themselves this year. In their relationships, they have been warm, open and caring. In their learning, they have given of their best. In sport, performance and leadership we have seen a strengthening of collaboration and teamwork. Such efforts require generosity and humility. In the area of social justice and outreach, contributions and commitment have been inspirational. Congratulations and abundant thanks to the 2013 Catholic Ladies' College students!

This year saw the inaugural African Immersion to the Brother Beausang School, Embul-bul, Kenya. The visit of 14 stude·nts with Ms Laura Farchione, Mrs Joanne Notting and Ms Anne Stringer mobilised the hearts and minds of many within the College Student leadership, community. together with awareness and fund raising, enabled our own gifts to

flourish, as we provided practical support and friendship to the African village community at Embul-bul.

This new sister-school relationship is certainly a gift for Catholic Ladies' College moving forward.

On 31 December 2013, the Sisters of Charity will begin the year marking the 1?Sth Anniversary of the first five Sisters arriving in Australia in 1838. The Sisters' early work with the female prisoners of Parramatta soon grew to include education, health and community outreach ministries. Their vision, compassion and foresight are woven into the rich heritage of Catholic Ladies' College.

I extend our warmest congratulations and heartfelt thanks to the Sisters on this special occasion.

To those in our community who are finishing their time at Catholic Ladies' College, be they students, families or staff, I thank each for your time with us and wish you well for the future.

May this College always hold a special place in your memory.

I offer thanks to the College Board of Directors, the College Parents' Association and the Old Collegians' Association. The work of each of these groups provides wise and generous input into so many facets of life at Catholic Ladies' College. I would particularly thank the College Board of Directors under the Chairmanship of Mr John Slattery.

Th e Boards' prudent stewa rdship and guidance, combined with the commitment of staff, helps us provide the best possible learning environment for all students. Finally, thank you to our students whose work, application, friendship and passion for life make Catholic Ladies' College a great school.

We often don't realise that time has passed until we look back and see how far we've come. It feels like yeste rday that we stood before the College Community, having just been appointed the College Co-Captains for 2013. Yet here we are, comi ng to the end of our journey, about to pass on the torch to next year's leaders. As a year level, where six years ago we were experiencing our 'firsts' at CLC, we now are living through our 'lasts' : our last who le College Assembly, our last day at school, our last days together. Yet these memories will always remain with us, long after we have walked down from Currajeen for the last time.

To sum up this year is no easy feat.

We have laughed, cried, stressed over upcoming SACS and folio deadlines, dressed up for Formal, Swimming and Athletics Carnival, overloaded on caffeine, celebrated eighteenths, baked for cake stalls and all the while walked up to Currajeen each day to be met with the bright smiles of th e othe r girls. Year 12 is a difficult year and, without the support of each other, our family and the dedicated

teachers who have helped us, this year would have been next to impossible.

As Captains it has been an honour to lead the 2013 Student Leadership Team under the diligent guidance of Mrs Caterina Bartelink. To work alongside a number of marvellous individuals who have each shown a dedication and passion in achieving th ei r goals and in representing the College community has been a true privilege. These young women have shown an enthusiastic energy in bringing new ideas to the table and implementing initiat ives throughout the school. They are a testament to themselves and should be immensely proud of their achievements this year. On that note we wish next year's Captains, Maddison Jackson and Meghan Kostas, th e best of luck for 2014; we are sure that you will do a fantastic job.

To our teachers, both this year and throughout all our years at CLC, we are forever grateful for your support and dedication to our schooli ng . To our Year 12 teachers in particular, thank you for the support and

guidance you have provided us throughout this year. To the Year 12 Team Leader, Mr Salmic, we extend to you our profound gratitude for your generous advice and efforts.

Without your witty and wonderful "thoughts of the week" and your ca nny ability to provide biscuits and lollies on random occasions, we would not have made it through the year.

Finally, to our fellow Year 12s, thank you for the trust and support you have placed in us this year. It has been an honour to represent you and we hope that we have done you proud. You are each wonderful, courageous and inspiring girls with bright futures ahead. As we walk through the iron gates of CLC for the last time, be sure that the memories and friendships we have made will remain.

Leadership Reflections Senior Years' reflection

2013 has been an eventful year for all the senior students. Each year there are many moments in the lives of the students at each of the year levels which stand out.

Perhaps the most exciting would have to be the senior formals and the Whitefriars' Year 10 social. For the Year 12 students, the Formal was a most glamorous event. Much excitement was in the air, as the girls and their partners danced and socialised with each other till the end. A great thank you must go to Mr Frank Salmic for the organising of this event. The Year 11 students enjoyed their formal at the Lincoln Centre and there was much cheer and sparkles, as the girls took to the floor with their partners. Such an event does not happen without the guidance and support of the Year 11 Team Leader, Mr Tony Regan. For theYear 10 students, the social at Whitefriars was a highlight of semester 2 and again the support of Ms Et was important in the success of the evening.

The senior students at each level participated in a generous manner in the College production, showing leadership and support for the younger students during the many hours of rehearsals.

In the area of sport, the senior students ably led the younger students in the different sporting activities.

From organising the sports ' carnivals to taking part in many sports teams, the senior students generated a strong sen se of teamwork and school spirit.

Overall, the students of Years 1012 in 2013 must be congratulated for their support of all aspects of College life and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them all and wish them wel l fo r 2014. My thanks must also go t he Senior Years Leadership team , Mr Frank Salmic, Mr Tony Regan and Ms Tulay Et for all their support throughout this year.

At Catholic Ladies' Co llege, learning is our explicit goal.

Learning happens in many ways, as evidenced by the myriad of learning experiences both within and beyond the formal classroom setting that our students have participated in this year. These learning experiences aim to develop the skills, dispositions and capab ilities considered to be important for 21st Century learners, namely: creativ ity, application , critical awareness, inquiry, persistence, thinking, critical questioning and media fluency.

Learning happens best in an environment which is safe and supportive, where students feel comfortable to question, experiment, collaborate, present and take risks. During the course of the year, Student Leaders in Yrs 7 to 12 were asked to reflect on t heir lea rn ing experiences.

What became evident as being common across al l year levels was t he students' acknowledgment

that the College has created a safe and supportive environment for their learning to take place.

Students said they learnt best when tasks are practical and respectful relationships exist.

When ICT is used as a tool to support their learning and a variety of tasks are used in classes.

They also value opportunities for discussion and some group work while acknowledging that traditional note taking is needed.

The students most enjoy "real life" learning experiences and are well aware of how their personal motivation has a direct link to how their learning progresses.

Our 2013 College theme, Entrusted with something precious, highlights the significant role that we as teachers have in encouraging each of our students to be life-long learners.

This gave my confidence another slight boost. I had been feeling like I was the only one with this nervous feeling in my stomach.

One of my new teachers cleared her throat and the room was silent.

She introduced herself and the calm, welcoming expression on her face made the levels of anxiety drop in the room. The other teacher introdu ced herself and she had a similar response .

single one of us would have each other and these welcoming teachers to turn to even in the hardest of times. The bond established through school with our peers and teachers would assist us in the hardest of times for years onwards.

Before we knew it, the shrill bell sounded for recess. I hadn't realised as it wa s happening, but I had gained a huge cluster of friends in such a short period of time. Well, that was one worry crossed off the list! I wouldn't have to sit alone at lunch! My other friends from primary school introduced their new friends to everyone and I did the same.

When recess ended, we re-joined our class . I suddenly realised another worry had been crossed off my list. There weren't any mean girls in my class, nor any who didn't like me.

By the end of the day, I realised that, in fact, every worry had been crossed off my list. I had made heaps of new friends, I had a friendly teacher, everyone in my class was nice and I knew the next six years would be guided with supportive friends and teachers.

2013 was a special year for Catholic Ladies' College as it saw the la rgest intake of Year 7s in the College's history. On Friday 1st February, 205 young ladies commenced t heir seco ndary school journey. These excited g irls entered a colourfully refurbished Year 7 area with fresh pa int, new ca rpet, bright new ergonomic chai rs and the French bl ue and ind igo coloured new lockers.

In 20 13, the Year 7s were fo rtunate to experience many learni ng opportunities beyond their classrooms. In Term 2, they enjoyed a three-day cam p to Mount El iza. The girlsparticipated in many activities includin g the vertical challenge, canoeing, sea

Team Leader Report kayaking, snorkelling and the giant swing and embraced the opportunity to make new friends.

This year also saw t he g irls undertake an outdoor sl eeping experience in te nts. For many t his was a great adventu re , for others it was a little out of thei r 'comfort zone', however, all survived an d I am sure gai ned a greater appreciation of their own bed!!

The Year 7s enjoyed many opportu nities to cele brate, lea rn and reflect as a grou p including the Yea r 7 and 12 Easter b reakfast, Peer Support, Reflection Day, the Tree of Life Program and the Year 7 Eucharist.

They also pa rticipated in their first swimmin g an d athleti cs House competitions, gym nastics

and swimming lessons as part of PE and enjoyed excursions to the Melbourne Zoo and Science Works.

Addition ally, it was wonderful to see many gi rls participate in the extensive range of extra-curricular activities offered at CLC. Many Year 7s ably represented the Col lege in interschool sporting competiti o ns and were involved in a variety of clubs and groups. I was delig hted to see many girls pa rticipate in the College production " Peter Pan", including the opening song which showcased the talents of several Year 7s.

This year has been a busy and exciting one. I would like to thank all who co ntributed to the successful running o f this

yea r level. In particular, I thank the Year 7 Homeroom teachers for thei r dedicated interaction with the girls in their care. I also extend my thanks to the Year 7 SLT leaders and Homeroom Reps who helped to organ ise and run several yea r level events.

I was t ruly delighted to see the girls in Year 7 embrace with j oy, enthusiasm and commitment all of the opportunities the College offered this year. The girls can indeed look back on their year with much pride and a real se nse of achievement.

Student Leaders hip Team Being a student leader requires passion, determination and commitment. Each girl amongst the Student Leadership Team has displayed these qualities and many more. This is something of pride for each girl, her family and friends.

As a team, we hit the ground running and we have achieved so much in what seems such a short amount of time.

We raised a large sum of money for Project Compassion through a number of 'Compassion Friday' initiatives as well as our incredible International Women's Day celebrations, Easter initiatives, talent quests and Footy day. In all that we have done, we were determi ned to create a community and Coll ege sp irit .

This spi rit is vital in empowering every _§tudent in the school to feel a part of

a College that is fundamental in the growth of every girl in their development from girl to woman.

We would like to extend our thanks to the Student Leadership Team of 2013 and Ms Bartelink for their hard work and persistence throughout the year.

We en courage them to walk away with the sense that leadership is not a badge nor a position but something that one is born with and one which we have a responsibility to utilise. Just like anything, if you have a ta lent, you have an obligation to use it.

First Founder's Day My first Founders' Day experience was absolutely fantastic. It was definitely a time I will remember throughout my years at CLC and beyond. The activities with our Year 12 buddies were very exciting and amusing to watch and participate in.

The activities required teamwork and agility.

One of my favourite activities was the sack race relay. It was fun to jump from one point of the oval to the other, but even funnier to watch everyone else do it too and try not to fall over. Afterwards, we went to the College Hall where 'The Dream Team', from each house team, competed in many amusing quizzes and games. We were able to watch the teachers perform the Harlem Shakel It was extremely entertaining and it made everyone laugh to see just what the teachers got up too.

Also, they dressed up as famous celebrities and the Dream Team had to guess who they were. With that being said, I loved my first ever Founders' Day and I can't wait until next year!

One part of city experience that I really enjoyed was going to the Queen Victoria Market. I was so happy when I found out t hat I would get to go there. It was fun going around to all of the st alls and seeing how it runs. Buying the liquorices and jam d ou g hnuts sold there was a high light for most people in the class .

Cassandra Karanicolos SA City experience was an amazing exp erience fo r me and I learnt so much about the fa mous buildings and monuments of Melbourne. I learnt a lot about tea mwork, when my group had to work together to get to places. I learnt a lot about the street art and artists of

Melbourne and I also learnt how to interview the public without offending them.

City Experience was an enjoyable experience working with different people and seeing different parts of Melbourne city. Reflection

The Year 8 students this yea r have embraced all activities with enthusiasm and passion. A highlight on the yea r was the City Experience program wh ere the students ventured into the city to collect co re data that culmin ated in a Presentation Evening.

The entire cohort headed off t o La ke Dewar lodge for our inaugural YMCA ca mp and participated in a range of activities from a Dual Flying Fox to Adventure Tunnelling. The first even ing was spent creating newspaper costumes as each activity group vied for the " Costu me Capers" prizes. The students enjoyed the experience of camping out, cooking their own dinner one night and became experts at setting up tents!

The Year 8s have enjoyed many spe cial prog rams an d events, incl uding Medieval Day, our High Resolves days, a Brainstorm Production s performance, Mission Day and a Year 8 Mass.

The students are to be commended for the ways in whi ch they have interacted with their peers and teachers to create an environment that has been positive and welcoming, especially to a number of new students who joined our year leve l this year. Many students demonstrated outstanding leadership and College spirit by acting as Homeroom Representatives, SLT Representatives, Magazine Representatives and High Resolve Leaders. A large number of the Year 8 students have also been members of the various co-curricular

groups, sporting teams and have been involved in our College Production.

I thank the Homeroom teachers who have guided the Year 8s; Mr Vincent Lam , Mrs Debbie Willoughby, Mrs Marti na Abraha ms, Mrs Caterina Bartel ink, Ms Janet Twigden, Mrs Elizabeth Warrilow, Miss Laura Cain and Mr David Young.

I am very proud of the kind and generous Year 8 students of 2013. I am confid ent that they will contin ue to be rich in spirit and kind in heart as they continue their journey here at CLC. Ms Jessica Vassallo Year 8 Team Leader

Junior Writing mother. She comes and touches my pale face, running a finger over my lips which have turned blue from lack of oxygen.

She demands I am washed with hot water while she goes to collect the doctor. He's not really a doctor, just an old man, but he has seen and done many things and the villagers value his opinion.

Skara Brae The heavy stone door creaks on its hinges. A cold, stinging breeze blows into the dark home. My sister and father step inside quickly, coughing as they are confronted by the overpowering smell of smoke. I turn back to my damp clay pot, which I have been shaping and detailing all afternoon. I rather enjoy spending my time crafting unique items to trade to the other people at Skara Brae. Having work like this occupies me and it means I can contribute to my family, because they have done so much for me.

Seven years ago I was born premature and, at that time, I was vulnerable to the elements. It was that year in which the entire bay of Skaill was preyed upon by treacherous storms in the winter. My fragile body became damaged ;this has impacted on my growth, my ability to tolerate cold conditions and my overall health. Since then I haven't been permitted to venture from the warm, confined space of our stone house.

There's nothing awful about staying inside the house; the turf roof keeps it insulated, the vent in the roof takes away most of the smoke and the smell from the hearth's fuel often doesn't linger for too long. However, I just wish I could see the sun other than through the roof vent, or feel the wind brush against my face.

Every night I dream of the ocean, which our village is so reliant on for life. Yet, I know it is for my own good that I stay in the warmth, especially because my seizures are occurring more frequently. Jinny, my sister, places her fur pouch on the floor in front of me and sits down. Pulling out small sharp bone knives, we slice open the slimy fish and begin preparing it for our evening meal. We gut and debone the fish and cut small strips off it, to cook it over the low burning flames.

The door opens again and our mother appears in the doonway pulling a large sack of vegetables, which she has spent the day harvesting from the fields that lie just beyond the village. Our mother places two vegetables next to us; one is a chard, the other a radish . After our dinner has been cooked, we sit around the fire to eat and my father tells us stories. These stories are the only way I can explore the outside world from inside. They satisfy my curiosity.

The sunl ight crawls across my skin and t he dawn calls for me. I try to pull myself up off my heathen mattress but my body is sore and aching.. My breathing becomes short and irregular. I pull myself up, clutching my chest, my insides are inflamed and I let out a raspy loud cough. I call for my

The water soothes my sore body as I watch it drain away through the stone drains in the floor. When I get out, I find that the colour has returned to my face and my mother dries my hair and untangles it with a finely toothed bone comb. The doctor has brought some strange smelling herbs and smears oil over my collar bones, for he hopes they will clear my throat and stop my insides becoming enflamed. I pull my fur blankets higher around my shoulders and fall asleep.

The fire slowly recedes to white ambers.

I wake. I hear whispering voices from the next room. The voices are of my mother and father.

"The doctor says, that tonight is her last night," her voice shakes. "He says her condition is too intense for any treatment to cure it, she has taken a turn for the worst!"

"What do we do? Should we tell her? She at least deserves a last farewell."

I bite my tongue, eyes filling up with tears.

I want to call out to them. I want to run to them. However, I want something more, if only it could happen. I lie still in bed, for hours, until I can hear their controlled deep breathing and know they are asleep.

Slowly getting out of bed, my eyes fall to my sister still asleep. Every part of me wants her to come with me, or talk to her and tell her why, but she would stop me. I pull on my furs and skins. Laying a hand on the cold stone door I push it open. With shallow breaths I step fonward. I can feel the snow crunch beneath my feet for the first time, the wind move across my face.

The sky is dim and I can hear the waves crashing in the bay. I run.

Out to the open world to explore Skara Brae. I bury my face into the thick snow, lean against the wild wind, run through the blossoming crop fields, watch the clouds pass me by, stand on lint covered beaches and splash around in the stinging cold ocean. Sitting on the top of the cliffs and looking back over my village, the sun begins to rise and I know that my family will come looking for me and I know how they'll find me. I only have one other wish; that they understand I had to and I am grateful for my last night on earth.

Humans Will Always Be Here I was a little tiger cub as happy as I could be One night I went to sleep with my brothers next to me We awoke to massive fires burning down the trees The flames were red with rage chasing us as we flee We ran into a village there was nowhere for us to hide My mother was shot by poachers for her fur and she died Both my two brothers joined me in a huddle as I cried We were full of fear and anxiety with depression on the side A human man took us to what was called a zoo It wasn't close to my home but it would have to do Humans came to be entertained but I wasn't amused I missed my home so much but I had to get through I never got to go home and this made me very stressed I paced back and forth not caring about the rest I had to get out I was getting very depressed Although my enc losure got bigger I wasn't im pressed I am a Sumatran Tiger taken from my home Because you the humans want your glorious palm oil My numbers are declining faster than you can run

My mother hasn't come, to rescue me, Lots of noise, and big bright lights, Cutting through, the quiet night, Bumping and jolting as I look around , No sea or sand anywhere to b e found' I lie down as my eyes slowly close, And I slumber down into a deep doze.

I'm in a strange place when I open my eyes, Will someone, anyone hear my cries 7 Suddenly, I see the small strange dish , Abright clean bowl, full of fish?

I leap !onward, grab one, then run away This fish, the first food I've had in many days.

That time was so long ago and now it seems,

It was almost unreal, like it was a dream, I still miss my mother, but I'm happy too I have a new home, the humans call it a zoo They give me good food and I'm as full as can be.

As Performing Arts Captain for 2013, I have thoroughly enjoyed being involved in the production scene and work ing together with students across all year levels to produce the won derful show that was Peter Pan. My involvement in the performing scene was significantly musically focused so, for me, organising the School's talent show with my fellow Leadership Team members was a blast and it was so fantastic to see we got 1 D to b e th erel An amazing show was put on by the X- Factor contestants. It was fantastic to see the students' talents continuing to flourish, following the amazing performances at Peter Pan. Fundraisers, lunch time performances and Rock the Schools have, for me, been a highlight of p erformance events this year at CLC .

Taking on a leadership role during Year 12 is a big responsibility and one that I only truly considered at the end of Year 10, but it is something I will always reflect on with pride and joy. I became so much closer to the girls across the year levels, in the Student Leadership Team and especially the Year 12 Leaders; I felt a real connection with the CLC community.

Be in g Drama Leader this year was absolutely fantastic. I was given all sorts of opportunities I had never had before and was able to contribute more than I ever tho ugh t possible. The best part about being a leader is being involved and m eeting new people, facing whatever life throws at you and challenging yourself to face it head on . Nothing is better than seeing your ideas come to life and that's what being a leader is all about. Having mentored a group of Year 7s by running a drama club for them and eventually performing with them in the foyer of the school production was an amazing experience. I loved helping the students to extend themselves and create more opportunities for them to showcase their amazing talents.

Music 2013 has seen the many talented music students shine and produce wonderful music. We began the year with performance and music studio demonstrations from VCENET music classes at the CLC Twilight Tour. It was fol lowed by a hot summer day of music from our Children of Indigo, Junk Band and the Senior Concert band at Our Lady Help of Christians Primary School weekend festival.

We welcomed the formation of the 2013 Junior Band in early March, as they worked towards building their instrumental music skills. As the year progressed, all involved were bursting with energy in composing, recording, _rehearsing and performing. Eleven Music

Ensembles performed at the Semester One Music Evening Concert. The Junior Band debuted and a special music staff performance was presented. Many lunchtime concerts were performed by the Unit 3-4 Vet Music classes, songs included Queen melodies, punk, jazz and contemporary pop.

In September, Parents and friends of Year 11 & 12 VCENET music solo performers we re enterta ined in a music recital in the Sister Una Mc Allister Centre.

Term 3 finished with contemporary bands expe ri encing a professional gig at Degani's Cafe/Restaurant, which was an excellent night.

More outside performances included the Vocal group Grace Notes opening

Festival at Practica lly Green the Edendale farm in Eltham and the Jun ior Band performance at the Beginner Band Bonanza Bash at Bla ckburn High School.

Semester Two Music Concert included performances from our concert bands, contemporary bands, strings, percussion and vocal groups, all being well recei ved.

The Music curriculum at CLC has soared to new heights this year and we are looking forward to another exciting year of music making in 2014.

Year When I tell people that I teach Year 9s, I generally receive sympathetic comments about them being the "worst year" and "How do you put up with them?" and so on. When I say that I am Year Level Team Leader, I get even more sympathy and knowing looks. I have to say, however, that my experience at CLC has been that the Year 9 level is a great place to be.

The year combines plenty of activities and creative ways of learning with a solid academic structure. The girls themselves are mostly respectful and co-operative.

If they get themselves into conflict with the school or with each other, they are very open to finding constructive ways to resolve their situation.

At Year 9, the girls seem to have progressed past many of the anxieties of Years 7 and 8, whilst still maintaining a fresh and hopeful outlook on life. There

certainly seems to be a strong sense of appreciation for their privileged position in life and they show an understanding that school is a co-operative venture, we need to understand where and respect each other's roles and responsibilities.

Th e year is structured in such a way that there always seems to be some challenge or adventure approaching, or just past, to break up the standard cl assroom style of lesson. For their first time at CLC, the girls undertook an exam timetable and they handled it calmly and maturely. Many of them have entered the workforce for the first time and are adding work commitments to the sporting, leisure, fam ily and school commitments that they need to manage each week. Hopefully, at Year 9, they can set their priorities sensibly and be disciplined enough to find the tim e

to devote to all of them, in the right proportions.

On the whole, Year 9 at CLC is a good place to be, and I'm happy to tell anyone who offers it, that their sympathy is not required I

Second Home Simone yanked open the door and dumped her school bag on the wooden floor, her growing feet thumping loudly down it as she headed towards the irresistible smell of chocolate cookies.

She glanced questionably at her dad, who had two steaming pots on the stove and a phone glued to his ear, before her chubby fingers grabbed a cookie which she hungrily devoured.

"So how was school?" asked her Dad as he hung up the phone, shaking his head in annoyance at the falling standards of phone companies.

"We started a project community service."

"What are you doing?"

"We're visiting the nursing home."

"Your sister did that last year."

"I better go tell her," declared Simone, rushing off to her older sister's bedroom.

"She likes old people!"

The group of kids slowly entered the nursing home common room, whispering excitedly. A young lady who introduced herself as Stacey and had a fake smile plastered on her face, stood up and told the kids all "the very, very important rules, which you are all going She wasn't very good to follow.".. with children.

When she had finished, Simone was looking curiously around the room when Miss Abbey tapped her on the shoulder and pointed her towards an old lady who was sitting all by herself in the corner of the room.

The lady's wispy, grey hair was pulled up in a loose bun on top of her head.

She had a long narrow face, pointed chin and a small mouth that was trying not to cheekily smile at the chaos the room had delved into. She had the look of someone who wanted to be somewhere else, someplace special.

Her skin looked like a piece of paper that had been folded and crumpled too many times for the numerous lines to disappear. It was her eyes that were the most interesting th ing though . While some might say her grey cardigan and pastel pink dresses made her fade into the background, her eyes most certainly did not. Sharp, blue and alert, they jumped out like a crocodile does at feeding time. Her stooped body may have been failing her, but her eyes showed her mind had definitely received the latest "software update."

Simone tentatively made her way over to her, suddenly overcome by a wave of shyness. When Simone perched herself on the edge of the couch, there was silence for a few seconds before her usual confidence came bouncing back.

"Hi, I'm Simone. I'm seven years old.

What's your name?" she piped, eagerly awaiting an answer. There was a pause, as if the woman was debating whether to respond.

"Peggy," she finally replied, her voice strong for a woman of her age.

"Do you like living in a nursing home?" asked Sim,pne. Peggy blinked as if she

had been asked to dance on two hands or try out for the Australian Gymnast team.

"Nursing home? Child , this isn't a nursing home, it's a nursing house."

"It says nursing home on the sign," Simone informed her, feeling confused.

"No matter what label they stick on it, th is place shall always be a house. A home is someplace special, someplace warm, this ain't a home." Peggy's eyes sparkled as she gave her little rant, her disregard for the nursing house clearly seeping into her tone. Simone wasn't fazed however and continued firing off questions.

"How old are you? Do you have kids?

Why's your hair grey? Where's your home?" Peggy gave a small smile at the last question.

"My home is in the countryside, far away from this cramped, urban environment with pollution, smoke and more concrete than green." Peggy expected the child to become bored and wander away to find some other person to annoy, but Simone's eyes lit up like fireflies at the mention of the country.

"What's it like living there?" Peggy hesitated for a moment, but a wave of nostalgia swept over her and she found herself vividly recounting her memories of the green hills, tumbling waterfalls and majestic horses ..

Peggy Peggggggyyyyt" "Peggy!!! woke with a start from her afternoon nap. She looked up, confused and saw the ecstatic girl from yesterday running towards her, a big smile plastered on her face. Simone planked herself down on the armchair and thrust a piece of paper at Peggy. Bewildered, Peggy looked at the paper before a loving smile broke out onto her face. Simone had handed her a picture she had drawn carefully with crayons. It was of Peggy, Simone and a little white sheep surrounded by emerald green pastures, qua int farmer's cottages and crimson red flowers. Their heads resembled potatoes more than humans, the sun more square than round. To Peggy it was perfect.

"Thank you Simone, it's beautiful. " She carefully placed it on her bedside table, Simone watching on proudly.

Peggy hobbled over to an old cabinet, searching among its contents for a while before pulling out a bright red photo album with dates scribbled on it.

"I think you might like to look at this, it's photos of my old horse Apollo."

Simone gave a squeal of delight and soon they were both immersed in the photos, happily oblivious to the world around them .

A couple of hours later, following much laughter, as Peggy listened to an iPod for the first time, a head popped in the doorway.

"It's time to go Simone," murmured Miss Abbey, her tired eyes quickly surveying the room before going on to find the next student. Simone's face dropped at the news, her happy outlook darkening.

"Bye Peggy," sniffed Simone. ''I'm not gonna' see you for a while now, 'cos' this is my last trip with school, but maybe I'll see you when my mummy and daddy are old enough to live in a nursing home - I mean house." Simone wrapped her arms around Peggy's frail body in one of those big, warm 1-loveyou hugs and trudged over to her small friends, informing them about a horse named Apollo. Peggy watched her go with a sad smile, not having the heart to tell her that when Simone's parents lived here, she and her toothless smile would be long gone.

The class of children began to trickle outside, loud and carefree, but a minute or two later a flustered Miss Abbey came in, hurriedly searching for something. She eventually found it and quickly turned to leave, but a small, hesitant voice interrupted her.

"Miss Abbey?"

"Yes, Peggy," she replied patiently, smiling politely.

"Could you please make Simone promise she'll come visit me and the nursing home."

Simone stuck to that promise for three years filled with gradually improved drawings of sheep and a wonky scarf Peggy taught her to knit. When the old lady's heart gave one last slow da-dum and stopped, Peggy's family buried her among the countryside's rolling hills and wildflowers. Through their tears, they remarked how she was finally home. What they didn't realise was that, while the countryside would always be Peggy's true home, in the past three years she had found another. Before I went, I looked at the dictionary meaning of the word 'counselling '.

It came up with this: 'professional guidance in resolving personal con flicts and emotional problems'.

Firstly, if it is 'personal conflicts', then shouldn't they be getting individual help? Why must we all know of your petty problems - whoa, dude, your friend called you a bitch. Get over it.

And secondly, the advice that the old guy was giving was pretty much the same advice to everyone - he just phrased it slightly different for everyone.

It was just to "try to see the positive in the situation". But the thing is, you have to know that nothing in life is " g reat''. I mean - what is the point of it all? Life, I mean. Well , other people's lives.

People don't think I'm great when I go around kicking people and ' torturing' them, or when they hear me 'using foul language'.

Sometimes I don't understand people.

But then again, who cares? Why do I have to? They're all idiots. Except for Kayne. He's what I call great.

People wonder why I act the way I d o.

I don't know what they say about me.

And again, I don't care because on the inside I'm wondering the same t hing about everyone else.

I realised that someone had sa id my name.

"Michaela?" the man repeated. " It's Mika," I replied automatically.

The man bowed his head slight ly. " Sorry, Mika. So what are you here for?"

I thought for a moment and just shrugged.

"You don't know?"

I smirked. "Nope. I was forced to come to this crap-fest."

Evasive I couldn't believe I had to suffer like this . It was just so ... boring. If I wanted to listen to other people's problems, I'd watch that stupid show my mum watches ... What was it again? 'Dr Phil'.

Why would anyone watch that show?

Maybe for the same reason that my mum does; maybe they too are hoping that someone will ask the 'doctor' something similar to their problem. I know that is never going to happen for my mum.

I zoned out of my thoughts as the frail girl started crying. Seriously, why would my mum force me into this? She needed it more than me. I could think of a hundred things I wanted to do - just not this.

I mean, so what? I flamed my teacher's car It's fun . It gives me a huge rush - it's almost like smoking, - not tobacco, by the way - it's just so thrilling.

I never mentioned that Kayne was involved. I would never do that. Making him go through what I was being constrained to do would be worse than death.

The stupid old man looked at his clipboard. He looked up and said sarcastically, "Hmm, let me see. You set fire to a teacher's car. How about we start with that? " I raised an eyebrow. "What about it?"

"Well , that seems like pretty destructive behaviour. Why d id you do it? " Destructive behaviour? Huh? W ho says that? This guy must be pretty old .

"I thought this was a counsell ing session not an intervention. I already had one of those with the cops."

The man just looked at me, wa iting for an answer.

I expla ined it as simply as I cou ld . I came up with three words. " It was fun."

"Fun?" The man asked.

I smiled condescendingly as I sa id, " Yes, fun. I'll explain it so you ci vi lians will understand. It means I found it exci t ing , humorous-" "I know what fun means, M ika ."

Mission We attended a flag raising ceremony, which helped to commemorate and celebrate Indigenous Australians.

The St Patricks Mass in the city was an excursion that the girls and I will never forget. After a beautiful liturgy, we were lucky enough to wa lk in the St Patrick's march and proudly represent CLC.

'Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see' Hebrews 11: 1 As a part of the Mission Team, the girls and I have been involved in a number of different community activities. It was great to see the wonde rful spirit and enthusiasm all of the girls hold. During Reconciliation Week, the Mission Team ~was very busy. Project Dreaming Tracks held an art ceremony where the girls helped to serve food and, in turn, raise awareness for Indigenous rights.

As Mission Captain, I felt so privileged to attend the ANZAC Day ceremony. As the sun rose, I was ab le to pay my respect to those who served o ur country and fi nd out what it truly means to be Australian. other many been have There that adventures opportunities and the Mission Team has participated in, but overall we have been blessed to be involved in the school and wider community. I am proud of the girls who have been a part of the team for 2013 and hope that their passion and commitment continues into the future.

Social ~ ustice "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, protect the rights of those who are helpless. Speak out and pronounce a sentence of justice, defend the cause of the wretched and the poor" (Proverbs 31 :8-9) This was the prayer that opened the Social Justice Group's first meeting of 2013 and guided the Group in its activities this year. s the Group also aims to promote care for the environment, our first activity involved joining wi th the Reconciliation Group to participate in Clean Up Australia Day. The girls enjoyed their time outside and collected much rubbish and many recyclable items in and around Arthur Park in Eltham.

View Kids Tuluyan Bahay Conference provided group members with the unique opportunity to consider the injustices of poverty, especially as it felates to children in poor countries. The girls spent the day with young people from the Ph ili ppines who have struggled with poverty and injusticeand learnt of t hei r stories of hope. Later in the year, the group showed its appreciation for

this opportunity by conducting a cake stall to raise funds for Bahay Tuluyan.

2013 saw the beginning of a new in itiative for the Social Justice Group, with the highly successfu l 'Running for Kenya' fun run raising $4,500 for the Brother Beausang School. The group also showed great initiative in making and selling ribbons and selling chocolates to raise money for International Women's Day and Project Compassion, respectively.

I would like to thank all members of the Social Justice Group for the enthusiasm and commitment they demonstrated in trying to make the world a better place.

most been year has This successful for the Reconciliation Group. We have more than doubled in numbers and had a lot of success in all of our projects, fundraising include which and raising awareness. At the beginning of the year, bollards representing admired Aboriginal people that we made for the Proud Race Project were installed in a ceremony that each participating school around Australia performed on the same day. Another highlight was when Vicki Clark, from the Catholic Aboriginal Ministries, came to our Assembly and in a moving six commissioned ceremony, people as Fi re Ca rriers to uphold the work of Reconciliation. We a1so participat ed in the Nillumbik Reconciliation Day Ceremony which was a real honour. We

have helped numerous charities, Dreaming Project including Tracks, Yipirinya School, Alice Springs and Open ing the Doors these During Foundation. over raised we fundraisers one thousand dollars for these various charities, which was an incredible achievement that we all feel very proud of. We have had a chocolate drive and two extremely successful sausage sizzles, which have raised an incredible amount of funds to help many children in need across our country. On behalf of the group, I would like to thank everyone who contributed to any of o ur p roject s t hi s year and hope that our he lp has been received somewhere t o help close the gap.

Aboriginal Immersion Experience Aboriginal Immersion Experience - I can 't hear those words without a flood of memories washing over me; some peaceful - sitting around the campfire or watching the sky change from blue to purple as the sun set. Several memories are filled with awe: walking through Kings Canyon, gazing up at Uluru or taking part in a Sacred Smoking Ceremony.

Some memories are filled with laughter: eating Honey Ants or attempting an Aboriginal dance.

Yet some memories are sad such as the condition of the children's

homes. Australia is constantly talking about third world countries yet there are people living in third world conditions in our own backyard.

House Report One of the first events of the College Calender is the receipt by the new Year 7s of a letter written from their Year 12 House buddies.

Soon after reading these letters, they are met by their buddy and encouraged to enjoy their first few weeks at the College. Once again they were warmly greeted by their buddies, establishing a year-long, or perhaps lifelong, connection. The House program at the College helps generate a spirit of connection, competition and sportsmanship among students at all Year levels. This year, both the Swimming Carnival and the Athletics Carnival were won by Vincentia, a House whose members have maintained a long tradition of competitive spirit.

Founders' Day again proved to be a highlight of the College Calender, with the Inter-House Super Challenge being won by Loyola. Other events held were; the Staff-Student Netball and Softball games and Lap-it-up. Overall, the House Spirit Cup, awarded to the House with the most House points from all competitions, went to Loyola. Congratulations to all Loyola members! The current Year 11 classes are now writing letters to next year's Year 7s. And so life cycle of the House Program continues ...

Community Service Community Service was something I will never forget; one week was just not enough, I didn't want to leave.

It was amazing seeing all the work these people do to help people in the community whether they do it as a job or volunteer once a week.

Visiting kids in the local primary school, learning their story and how far they have come and playing games with them didn't seem like much but it built their confidence and let us see a little more of the kids who hide at the back and are shy. It really helped them come out of their shells.

I know I wantthis organisation to continue to grow and reach people all over Australia one day and I know they have the ability to. I honestly cannot think of anyway Open House can improve their work. Ross, Glenn, Will and Harmony are the kindest people I have ever met and are the perfect people to be running this organisation. So overall, Community Service was by far the best thing about Yr 10 for me and I can't think of a better place to have been than Open House.

Year 10 Reflectio n Year 10, for me, has been one of t he most exciting, cha llenging and happy years of my schooling. It ha s really been a year to experiment with who we are, who we wa nt to becom e an d wha t we are really passionate about.

As part of our ca ree rs curriculum, we participated in the Community Service p rogram. This was an amazing opportunity and rea lly boosted o ur confidence for Work Experience in Year 11. I was' very fortunate to receive my first preference and was sent to a primary school in Mill Pa rk. Th ere I assisted the Year 1 stud ents with their daily schoo l work and the teacher in her p reparations.

This was a fantas tic experience for me and I enjoyed every day that I was at the school. was experience amazing A nother the extraordinary excursion to The Convention Centre in the city where we heard th e Dalai Lama speak. This was a o nce-in-a lifetime experience and one that I never t hought I would have. The Dalai Lama had t he whole room in a standing ovation as soon as he stepped onto the stage. His inspirational words and man y stories will, I'm sure, remain with us forever. Everyone embraced the opportunity and had such a great ti me.

In Term Three, the Yea r 10 students were require d to submit their subject selections for VCE. This was a very exciting and anxious time. We were gu ided by ou r teachers, parents and peers to make the decisions that best benefited and suited ou r personalities, capabilities and passions. Year 10 has been an exciting year that has flown by in the blink of an eye, with so many amazing opportunities and experiences.

Yea r 12 Environmental I rea lly enjoy Environmental Science - it is a fun and interesting way to learn about how much we impact the world around us and how we an help reduce our environmental impacts.

"Environmental Science has taught me to look at the world in a new way and has fuelled my curiosity to know more about it."

I loved the fact that what we learnt was all applied to real life events and technologies. Whether it was

nuclear physics in hospitals or electricity in households, it was great to learn about the actual science of them, but then the real life examples and uses.

Environmental science provided me with better knowledge of the effect of both natural and anthropogenic processes on our planet and also with an understanding of how to manage the world we live in. It has been an amazing experience with great outcomes!

Year 12 Biology Our excursion to Melbourne Univers.ity focused mainly on genetics and gene technology.

It was a great experience using the pipettes and having a go at inserting DNA into a Gel Electropho resis well.

Yea r 11 Physics It's great to be able to learn about things like electricity and motion which we see in the world every day; it's a science that makes the world make so much more sense!

The Future Spark Bike Challenge was a fun and very interesting way to learn about how our energy is generated and how we use our energy.

Year 10 Science We participated in an excursion to the Australian Synchrotron where there is a large 'rink' like area which electrons race around at an extremely fast rate - in 0.6 seconds,

Year 7 Science Year 7 students were treated to the 'Rock Me Galileo' performance where we were taught about Galileo's testing on the Leani ng Tower of Pisa, about his life story and about how Galileo 'upgraded' the spyglasses to the telescope and made magnificent discoveries.

Sports & House Leaders Good sportsmanship and participation have been the foundation of the sporting life at the College for 2013. Throughout the year, the sporting department has thrived from the constant efforts and talents shown by the girls at CLC. At the beginning of the year, our aim as the College Sport CoCaptains was to share our love, commitment and passion for sport with the school community. It has been an honour to assist the evergrowing popularity of sport at CLC. The inter-house swimming and athletics carnivals once again displayed the girls' enthusiasm for sport and College life as a whole. The fantastic days enabled opportunities for all members of the CLC community to become

involved, whether with utmost pride others or dressing our real school exciting days were

The common staff vs. student lunch time games have been a highlight for both students and teachers alike. With the friendly rivalry always providing a laugh, the games demonstrate the ability of sport and physical activity to bring the College community even closer.

Another highlight for t he year was the traditional Whitefriars vs. CLC netball game. As CLC came away

with the win for the first-ever time, the game once again pro moted the lively atmosphere of the sporting activities at the College.

It has been an honour to represent the College as the 2013 Sports Co-Captains. We w ill be forever grateful for the opportunity to lead and promote the sporting life at CLC. We encourage the girls to continue their amazing efforts in order to showcase their talent and great sportsmanship in the years to come!

Learning

2013 has been an exciting and rewarding year in Student Services. There has been an assortment of different programs and opportunities offered over the course of the year.

Student Services is always bright and buzzing, even before homeroom commences, with our enthusiastic Morphograph classes which are frequented by Yr 7 and Yr 8 students to develop and strengthen their spelling strategies. The day concludes with more Morphographs and Elementary Math Mastery classes. As well as these classes, for our junior students, the department also offers Homework Help twice a week in the Resource Centre ..

Student Services has provided enrichment and extension programs such as the Da Vinci Decathlon (Yr7), Creative Writer's Workshop (Yrs 7- 10) and Tournament of the Minds (Yrs 7-10). These programs give students the opportunity to further develop their ability to problem solve using creative, critical and analytical higher order thinking skills. Our

Tournament of the Minds Social Sciences and Engineering Teams are to be congratulated for being awarded a Class Honour.

Over 25 students have been involved in the Creative Writer's Workshop and writing since our first session in Term 2. Through lunchtime sessions focusing on areas such as characters, plot, sensory writing and editing, the students have been able to refine their writing skills and ideas. Students have been exposed to a variety of experiences inside and outside of the College including an enriching workshop led by author Tony Thompson focusing on the publishing process and attending sessions at the Melbourne Writer's Festival. We look forward to publishing an anthology of the students' final pieces at the end of term for the school community to enjoy.

Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) AWARD Congratulations to Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority's 2012 VCAL Achievement Award recipient, Caitlin Wood, who received the award for her success in a school-based Apprenticeship.

When Caitlin began her Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning program, the part-time job she had held since Year 9 at Hair by Ciccone quickly blossomed into a school-based Apprenticeship. Cong ratulations to Caitlin and her teachers, both at CLC and beyond, on this significant acknowledgement.

Congratulations to Samantha Bird for her outstanding success zs 2012 College Dux. Samantha attained an ATAR of 99.45 and was the recipient of the Faculty of Engineering Scholarship from Monash University.

The 2013 debating season was a success for many of our girls in the debating team. This ye!Jr, we registered two D Grade teams, made up of Yr 8s and Yr 9s; one C Grade team with our Yr 10s; and one A Grade team made up of Yrs 11 and 12. The girls participated in five debates in the Watsonia region, supported by our team of coaches: Mr Frank Salmic, Miss Georgette McKeough (ex-student), Miss Laura Porter-Jacobs (ex-student) and Miss Emily Jeans (ex-student). I would like to extend my appreciation to our coaches as, without them , the season would not be possible.

Our C Grade team finished equal third on the ladder and our two D Grade teams placed equal third and fourth. We had a number of best speaker awards throughout the season and it was great to see some of our first time debaters achieve such high results. Debating has been a great opportunity for many of the girls to extend their public speaking skills.

Th is year we have had a record number of Yr 7 girls sign up for the Junior Debating Competition held at Parade College in Bundoora . CLC was proud to register seven teams this year and the girls are working hard on developing their speech writing skills. It will be excellent to see some of these girls continue debating next year.

Health and PE Physical Education and Health and Human Development have continued to develop this year through staff innovation and initiative and by utilising and engaging with local resources and facilities. Our philosophy of healthy, active engagement in activity and encouragement of educated healthy lifestyle choices, forms the foundation of our curriculum.

The gymnastic program at CLC has allowed students an opportunity to tryout the Elite training facility at Jets Gymnasium Diamond Creek.

Furthermore, a new comprehensive Water Safety Unit at Year 7 complements the water-based camping program.

This also provides students with critical knowledge and life skills in water safety.

The development of a longer-term vision of a bike program has seen the purchase

of new bikes, helmets and storage and accessible bikes for use in PE classes.

We would also like to encourage the increased use of bikes by the CLC students in travelling to school in the future. For a school next to a bike path, it makes good sense for our students to build in incidental exercise to their daily routines.

Specialist instruction from outside the school has been part of our special programs. These have included Dance Teachers visiting on numerous occasions and our Volleyball has made great strides at CLC, through the use of coaches in Year 8 to complement the curriculum .

This has had some very positive results in the sports program.

Participation in both VCE Health and Human Development and VCE Physical Education provides a motivating and

meaningful academic course pathway for our students to strive for their individual and collective best.

The Health and Physical Education program continues to encourage the participation in physical activity and healthy lifestyle choices in and outside school hours and for the longer term.

Areas such as Healthy Eating, Growth and Human Development, Drug and Driver Education and Positive Mental Health and Relationships continue to form key components of a dynamic Health Education course design.

We look forward to extending these exciting courses and creating new opportunities for students in 2014!

Technology The Technology Key Learning Area has continued to offer a variety of diverse subjects and subsequent opportunities for students to learn in both practical and theoretical contexts. The 2013 Technology subjects included Jewellery Design, Games and Thinking, Food Technology, Fabrics Design and Fashion and Technology across Yrs 8-12.

In each sub1ect, students were able to develop their knowledge and skills when working,through the main technological processes of research, design, production and evaluation. It was a pleasure to observe students learning and competently using numerous items of equipment such as the 3D printer,

plastics moulding machine, soldering irons, scroll saws, sewing and overlocker machines and various items of kitchen equipment to achieve the subject outcomes. The ability for students to create a tangible representation of their abilities is another one of the great endresults of the Technology subjects.

At the conclusion of each Technology subject, students continually reflected on the fun experienced whilst learning and often admitted to initial uncertainty and the eventual achievement in overcoming this.

The confidence gained and outcomes achieved can to be credited to the student and staff motivation, creativity and persistence.

Deep appreciation and gratitude is held for the staff members' contributions to the Technology Key Learning Area in terms of their application, enthusiasm and knowledge. Languages This year in Yr 11 Indonesian, the stud;onts advanced their knowledge of the grammar and life in Indonesia.

The group was thirsty for knowledge for new and challenging language points and learnt about the different aspects of the culture. The students had learnt about different careers in Indonesia, schooling, geography of the archipelago and the differences

between the city life and living in the small villages. Some of the Yr 11 students experienced this with other year levels by accompanying Bu Khoo and Pak Sil on a trip to Malaysia, where the lifestyle and language is quite similar to Indonesia. The group got to be face- to -face with the beautiful and luscious scenery, the excitement of bargaining and befriending the friendly

locals of Malaysia. It was a hardworking and rewarding year for the students and they look forward to what Yr 12 has to offerl

As a part of the Italian Program in Yr 7, we ilttended the Ludus Magnus Gladiator School in Italy. We were put into colour teams or legions and had four major "battles" competing against other legions in our class, leading to the final battle at the Colosseum! During my time in Italian classes, I learnt such a wide variety of vocabulary that I was able to translate a complex conversation and even create a conversation by myself. Learning Italian was so much fun, because we were using our learnt words in real- life situations such as in socialising with people in Italian.

Cody Lee, Yr 7 Italian We started off our German classes learning how to become a German detective and throughout the year have been promoted to a secret agent in the hunt for Agent Obel (Agent Evil). Every now and then we undergo missions to try and defeat him. These missions are either vocabulary quizzes, tests or group projects. In the second term, we began reading the book "To the Boy in Berlin",

doing character work in German and learning about the traces of German in Australia. Term 3 saw us embark on a journey, looking at how to order from a restaurant or cafe in Germany. We found out how to take two separate words and change them in to a compound noun.

Auf Wiedersehen 1 Rachel and Allyra, Yr 8 German The Masquerade Parade was definitely a highlight of the Yr 8 Languages program.

All of the students who study Italian, German and Indonesian participated by moulding and decorating the ir own mask according to their language's culture and traditional patterns and colours. All of the students were excited to see everyone else's masks and the event resulted in a day of fun and entertainment.

Laura Lazzara, Yr 8 Italian The Language Perfect World Championships were an incredible chance for CLC to display the sheer dedication and hard work that is put int o languages every year. Those ten

days were sometimes very challenging to keep going against students all over the world but, with determination, the CLC girls all pulled through to the end to have enormous success I Vanessa Plumb, Yr 9 German This year I was lucky enough to go on the trip to Italy. It was a great experience and we were able to stay with an Italian family in Verona and to go to school with them. The school, Agli Angeli, was great and we got to meet so many new people. After the home stay we travelled around parts of Italy including Venice, Florence, Siena, Assisi, Pisa and Rome.

There was lots of sightseeing and gelati eating and we got to experience so many exciting activities like riding in a gondola, throwing a coin into the Trevi Fountain and being announced to the 50,000 people at the Papal Audience with Pope Francis. We all had such a fantastic time.

Humanities VCE students can choose to study Geography, History, Accounting , Business Management, Australian and Global Politics and Legal Studies in Humanities.

Junior girls learn about Commerce, Economics, Pol itics, Legal Studies, History and Geography as part of their core study of Humanities. Year 1Os study a Humanities elective with a business focus called "Manage This", or an historical, political, legal and geographic focus called "Our National and Global Future".

We next focused on 'Australia and Asia - making a nation'.

The Australian Gold mines was the next focus which involved a field trip to Sovereign Hill in Ballarat. The World

War One topic inspired us with stones of Australian soldiers and of ANZAC Day. Students watched a one man drama performance which provided an insight into the trauma experienced by World War One soldiers.

During this Australian federal election year, we studied Politics. Year Nine Humanities has been a very interesting subject and the information I have gained has been invaluable.

Eden Febbraio Year 9 Humanities in Year 7, began with Geography which included mapping skills, the Asia-Pacific region and Endangered Species. We went on an excursion to the Melbourne Zoo so that we could further look at the some of the animals that are considered endangered . We also looked at case studies which showed how the manufacturing of palm oil is leading to the destruction of Orangutan's natural habitats. Overall, studying Humanities at Year 7 has been a great introduction to the subject and has been an enjoyable experience.

Kate McCarthy Year 7

The introduction into the new subject, Humanities, this year has been an informative one. Prior to starting secondary school I had never thought of many of the new and exciting areas that I have been taught. The subject covered interesting areas from the Asia Pacific region to the great ancient civi lisations of the world. I was also able to create an iMovie which showed the story of an endangered species which was fun to research . I most enjoyed studying the history of Ancient Egypt.

Humanities at Year 7 has been a thrilling topic and I am really looking fonward to studying Humanities again next year.

This year in Humanities, we've looked at many interesting topics.

We learnt about globa l ineq ualities and developing cou ntries. We all researched a developing coun try and th is made us rea lise how lucky we are to live in Austral ia, which is a developed country.

Year 8 Humanities has definite ly been interesting; we have studied Medieval Europe, the Khmer empire, economics and weather. In the Medieval Europe study, we learnt about the p lague and how it affected Europe. We also had a Medieval Day, where we dressed up as peasants, kings and queens. We did lots of fun activities and it was a re ally great day. That was my favo urite part of Humanities. Overal l, I have enjoyed Humanities and I have learnt so much.

Year 10 Humanities has taught me a lot about erosion, coastlines and especially World War 2. As well as covering this content in class, we went on an excursion to the coastline of the M ornington Peninsula. We went to five beaches - Jacks beach, Somers beach, Cape Schanck, Sorrento Ocean beach and McCrae Beach. We also went to the Shrine of Remembrance and learnt about soldiers in the wars.

Chess Club & Book Club CLC Chess Club This year, the CLC Chess Club competed against Our Lady of Sion in Term 1, Mac Robertson Girls' High School in Term 2 and Loreto College Mandeville Hall in Term 3. By Term 4 11 girls had qualified for the State finals at Lauriston Girls' College where they competed against the best in the state for a place in the Australian Girls' National Chess Championship. A highlight of the year was CLC's hosting of the inaugural Girls' Regional Chess ChampiGnship in the Sr Una McAllister Centre. This comprised a separate team event and individual competition. CLC's team consisted of Chess Captain, Katherine

Kim, Elise Hor, Sarah Booth and Vanessa Plumb. Individuals who competed were Molly Hunter, Darby Jacobsen, Gillian Frayne, Claire Nugent, Elyse Blackley, Katherine Kim, Linda Badawi, Vanessa Plumb, Victoria Hogan, Sarah Booth and Elise Hor. All the Chess Club girls who participated in the competitions throughout the year enjoyed the chance to meet and compete against a variety of students from many schools around Melbourne and look forward to the challenges next year brings.

Alumni The Alumni program has continued to flourish at CLC in 2013. Reunions have been held for young alumni, Class of 2011, right through to celeb rations for the Class of 1953. It never ceases to amaze how easily CLC 'girls' reconnect wi th one another, often after an extended period of time with no contact. This certainly says something about the friendships and connections fostered in a caring environment at the College. Some of the reunions have been held at CLC and the women who have attended have loved revisiting their former classrooms and rediscovering various nooks and crannies that still held interesting memories.

For lnternatfonal Women's Day, we were privileged to welcome Alumni, Virginia

Haussegger (CLC 1981), well-travelled award winning journalist, author, social commentator and news presenter, to address the College Assembly. Her address to the College focused on following your heart, facing challenges and not being afraid of making mistakes.

Another highlight in ou r College calendar was our Founders' Day assembly when we welcomed Alumni, Liselle Thorburn (nee Pote, CLC 1993). Liselle spoke from the heart as she shared much of her life with the College community; from her energetic, full days at CLC to facing enormous challenges such as dealing with Multiple Sclerosis and then the loss of her beautiful son Caleb to Meningococcal. Liselle's message to all who were there was to not focus on the

'impossible' but to turn it into an 'I'm possib le'.

The Careers Forum was a most successful event, which involved over forty alumni, representing various fields, who spoke to students and parents about their career paths.

CLC is proud of all our Alumni and they are encouraged to stay involved and connected . These women we re once CLC students but they will always be CLC Alumni.

Mrs Chris Nolan After 26 years at CLC we say goodbye to much loved and respected teacher and staff colleague, Mrs Christine Nolan.

Mrs N olan has taught across a number of disciplines - RE, History, Geography and English - and was a 'founding' member of Interdisciplinary Studies. As Year 7 Co-ordinator for many years, her leadership, passion and commitment to the Year 7 program resulted in a very successful and exciting transition and learning program for many new students.

However, Mrs N olan's genuine interest and rapport with her students was across the board, at various other year levels as well. Her door was always open to both students and staff colleagues. She was a thoughtful, concerned and interested listener, co nfidante, counselor, mentor and role model. Throughout her years at CLC Mrs Nolan has always been committed to the broader life of the College, organizing excursions, attending school camps, participating in outdoor education and sporting activities, dressing up for Year 8 dinners, helping backstage at College productions, becoming involved in various teaching and learning committees and initiatives, and, also contributing to staff well-being.

We thank Mrs Nolan for sharing with the CLC community her enthusiasm and love of teaching; for truly valuing each student's gifts and talents; for encouraging learning 1n a creative and caring way. Finally, we thank her for her friendship and collegial support We wish Mrs Chris Nolan all the best for this new phase in her life and ma y her retirement be full of wonderful travel adventures and happy, fulfilling times with her family and friends.

Sue and her family have had a long association with Catholic Ladies' College. Her daughter, nieces and sistersin-law all attended the College. When she returned to the workforce in 2005, Sue commenced as a regular member of the CLC Administration Team. In 2010, she became a permanent staff member working 3 days a week in a shared role as Visitor Receptionist. Sue's friendly nature ensured all parents and visitors to the College were warmly welcomed and assisted with their enquiries. The student database and attendances were a large part of her role, which she undertook with accuracy and diligence. Sue's attention to detail and her reliability made her a valued team member.

We wish Sue well in her retirement.

Leaving: Mr Sam Di Camillo Mr Sam Di Camillo leaves Catholic Ladies' College after six years as Director of College Operations and this year as Deputy Principal Student Wellbeing. During this time he has provided committed and loyal service and leadership to this College Community. Students, parents and staff alike will miss him and have certainly appreciated the ways that he has led, supported and interacted with all.

Mrs Kylie Lawtey Mrs Kylie Lawtey commenced at Catholic Ladies' College in 2011 and was a valued membe r of the College Administration Team working co llaboratively with staff in the preparation of many Co llege docum ents. Kyl ie produced the College N ews and was responsib le for int roduci ng the TryBooking system to CLC. She also enjoyed her administration liaison role with the Parents' Association. Kylie will be missed by all but, in particular, the Administration Team with whom she worked closely. We wish Kylie the best of luck in her new endeavours.

Parents Association 2013 has been a very productive year for the Parents' Association in fundraising for College initiatives and also in providing the opportunity for parents to meet and mingle.

Pleasingly, we have welcomed new faces onto the committee and we have added some new events to engage parents and help them build networks.

Our year level Coffee and Catch Up mornings in the beautiful Sr Una M cAllister provided much Centre enjoyment and connection between parents, as well as providing an opportunity to see the beautiful vessels that

were the parents' contribution to the Sacred Space.

Our father/ daughter bowling afternoon was a positive strike with those who attended .

Much fun was had with dads getting an opportu ni ty to meet other dads and their daughters. We look forward to doing this again in 2014.

The high tea for our Yr 12 girls and their mothers/significant women was a lovely affair with fine food in the beautiful setting of Ballara Receptions.

It was also a t ime t o reflect on the cu rrent year and the past five. I t hink that th e lo lly boxes

were a little necessary sugar treat for the girls to go home and prepare for the next SAC.

Senior Writing Miss Oh, how she disliked the winter weather -- so very, very muchl How she despised her small, delicate hands now a light shade of blue and she was almost inconsolable at the thought of her hair, in conflict with the white blanket of snow covering all she could see. "How tragic for a little governess to possess hair that made one think of tangerines and marigolds" the couples passing thought as she rnade her way down Wilton Crescent. She walked hurriedly past the Victorian facades, wrapped cozily in her almond green coat, and, as she burst through the kitchen door, the clock tolled 9.

"Ae moment! If yer knew what was good and prorper, yer wouldn't insist on being late like thart everyday. Once yer drop off the yungest you should be back 'ome as soon ayer can to look after the older two."

Mrs Gilmore greeted her with the customary quip before smiling broadly and continuing with her work. It was her priority to make sure the 'queer wee Ann' wouldn't get into any sorts of trouble.

The little governess darted up the stairs towards her room, unpinning her straw hat as she went. Employed for almost a year now, she felt as much a part of the household as the small mice were fixtures of Mrs Gilmore's kitchen . She slowly removed her kid gloves, rested her adornments on the small bed, turned, rapped on the adjacent door and entered, jovially greeting her charges with a bright "Good morning!"

Cecily and Charlotte, sixteen, were as sweet as the doves perched on the Church steeple in the city square.

Their thin, honey hair wisped behind them like veils as they fluttered over to her, instantly grateful, she thought, for her arrival. But, as the little governess opened her small pretty mouth to speak, Cecily chirped in a soft falsetto, 'Gregory is coming home today for a visit, did you know?"

"Of course she knew, Cece," voiced Charlotte, "Miss is always saying how she knows the running of the house like her own reflection!"

"Oh, of course you are right Lottie.

Apologies Miss, what a silly question to have asked," and a bloom graced Cecily's cheeks as she stared up, her innocent eyes watching the little governess closely.

"No," a little pause, then "No, I did not know."

The little governess was silent for the remainder of the morning, leaning against the chaise with her sewing across her lap, her charges twittering about her in preparation for their brother's arrival. Like little birds they flew back and forth across the room, deciding whether to wear the green silk georgette or the beaded chiffon out for dinner that night and which tunes, Debussy or the new Gershwin, to play him for their brother.

Outside, the bright rays of early morning sunlight were banished by sharp oeedles of rain falling against the window against the window like a hand tapping to get in, tap tap . tap tap ... but it did not matter .

tap tap tap tap it was outside and she was inside ... tap tap ... just like a few years ago when she was on the train and a kindly old-but she pushed the thought aside .. tap tap ..

The girls' description of their brother perfectly echoed her own memories .. she sighed, blinked twice, clasped her hands together and drifted into reverie ..

lined with little shops, their windows bright with colourful exhibits. And next to them ... cafes! Packed to the brim with such peculiar characters. A man with a pointed beard clinked tall glasses with a dark man in a vibrant, blue suit; another spoke French with a woman wearing a skirt astonishingly short, "Celebrez mon Cheri, the night is young."

It was last year and Lady Belmore had offered her the week off. "What a treat!" thought the little governess.

She would have to leave immediately to be home by nightfall. But her train had been delayed and she was left alone, so, so alone in her little room as the morning sun faded into noon. Tap Tap ... I wonder whom ... She opened the door to a stranger's flustered face, crowned with familiar honey hair and set with heavy-lidded, icy blue eyes that pierced her like lightning across the sky. How different! How different and striking he wasl

But, it was barely past two! People assembled on the street, together in little flurries of activity; snapshots of . . of women in long fur coats who purred about the latest fashions and balanced long cigarettes in their hands . of men in bowler hats who cut through the crowd like scissors.

BEEP BEEPI A passing automobile.

The sun peeped through the clouds, happy to have such a fine view and the little governess smiled, feeling warm toasty even.

"Oh! My apologies, it seems I've come across the wrong room."

She shivered, but it had been warm in the house that lonely afternoon, not cold at all. His eyes grazed her figure, giving her a queer little feeling in her stomach and she had wrapped her arms around herself squeezing tightly before peeping up at him through her long lashes. He was older than she, in his late twenties, and wearing a uniform -- a soldier she supposed. No, an officer! Yes, yes! How exciting! She had never met an officer - a knight returned from battle. Behind the blue eyes the little governess recognised an aching .. no, no an emptiness that he had long kept locked away.

"Gregory!" Lady Belmore's voice had rung from across the hall, where she stood staring at the little governess with an odd pity - but, but why pity?

"Please try not to get caught up here with the girls' dolls and playthings, come along."

And in a flash he was gone, leaving only a peculiar sweet, pungent scent that she could not quite place .

Thud! Thud! The sound startled the little governess and she quickly rose to her feet. The girls stood by the pianoforte, conversing in whispers just loud enough for her to hear.

"What I said Lottie, is that Miss is like family to us."

"Oh yes I quite agree Cece .... were it not for how - but a sister all the same" "A sister indeed I But would Gregory overlook .. " and their discussion dissolved into giggles leaving the little governess as flushed as her marigold hair.

She had not seen Master Gregory since that first time, for she had always been away when he had come calling ; either sent ahead to the summerhouse before the family or out chaperoning one of the girls. This afternoon Lady Belmore had given her a reprieve, told her to visit her "little friends at the Governess Bureau." The little governess had asked to remain, but she had been shooed out of the room straightaway.

That afternoon, as she made her way to the Bureau, the little governess found herself upon a quaint street

"How strange it all is," then "how like a play, with each person playing a part." She looked out from her quiet spot .. How like a play, indeed!

"What is like a play?" a voice sounded behind her, surprising the little governess so intensely that she let out a small squeak. "My apologies I did not mean to frighten you." Turning, the little governess replied, "I had not realised that I had spoken aloud."

Gregory Belmore looked around, sharply observing the people, just a she had been. "I had come to the house as you were leaving and I decided to follow you, just to see where you were off to."

"Well I-" "Then I saw you here and I could not help myself from talking to you . Is that all right?"

His blue eyes for the first time met her own. She opened her mouth to speak but he interjected once again, remarking on how he had hoped to catch her for so long but their paths had never crossed. "Would you like to walk with me? Unless you would rather

I ... ?"

What? to turn him away when he had just told her all those sweet things and all because she . "No, it would be a pleasure."

Grinning, his hand darted into his pocket and retrieved a small crumpled brown bag, "Boiled sweet?" She popped the sweet into her mouth and listened as he spoke raptly about his time overseas. Caught up in his tales, she was set adrift across foreign oceans; the smooth jazz notes of Paris twirling around her, carrying her off with the cadences of his voice .

"Have you ever been to out of England?"

"For a short while."

"Did you like it?'' and the way he looked at the little governess made her feel she could trust him with anything. What different eyes he hasl So open, reaching out .

"I've travelled up to Scotland once and then to France almost four years ago."

"But out of Europe? Ever out of Europe?"

"No" and his eyes flashed strangely.

"No. No. I didn't expect you had."

But before she could profess that - he began speaking again ..

When she looked around , the little governess did not recognise the high buildings looming dow n upon them. Her shoes echo ed on the cobblestones, and the little governess shivered in the sun . From a balcony, a doleful princess leant ag ai nst the railing; her tattered gown flapping in the breeze. The governess wa s very glad that Master Gregory was here to keep her safe. Master Greg ory, who had been so sweet to her; M aster Gregory, who had spoken to her like a friend. Like a white kn ight, he would lead her through this stone forest.

"Where are we?" the little g overness peeked out, her nose twitching as it met the same sweet scent t hat she had associated with Greg ory.

"Oh, just a small detou r my dear, nothing to worry about. Another sweet?"

She did not quite know what to say, but did not take up his offer. His voice was not as smooth as she had remembered it a moment ago. There was a thin layer of ice and it cut through the thickening air. Oh dear!

Oh dear! What am I to d o? She said: "I think we ought to go back."

"But we're taking a shortcut, we'll be where you need t o go in a jiffy."

But she had not told him where she needed to go, she had tried but he had not let her speak . She was quite determined that they must go back, "No , really, please. " "We'll just s,;op in t here before we get on our way The little governess lo oked to the direction he had pointed. A red tinted light and wisps of smoke poured out from a dark doorway, where an Oriental man stood watchi ng, silently.

The little governess backed away. But Master Gregory latched his ha nd onto her wrist. Two b ig tears bri mmed her eyes as she stared up at him. "And are you going to run off without even a good bye?" he asked , drawing her closer sti 11.

Nol It was a dream! A dream! A deep shock shot through her as her mind drifted back: to an old ma n and a quiet room and two p ink glasses of wine. " No, no, no, no," she stammered, reeling. Master G regory stumbled , pushing her until her back hit up against a stone wa ll. His feverish body pressed against hers and though she shook her head from side to side, distracted, he kissed her on the mouth. On the mouth! How could hel She ran, ran until she fo und the bustling main street. Men and women meandered about. In the w indow of a little cafe, a disheveled reflection caught her eye. "It's over .. it's all over now," she hushed the mi rror face, which seemed so much more grief stricken than herself when 'It's all over' was all she could offer. Stra ightening her clothes, she turned and hurried back the way she came, throug h t he crowds, back, back to .. .oh dear ..

Work Experienc e Work Experience was a fantastic experience that I thoroughly enjoyed! I had a great week at the Eltham Leisure Centre, where I was primarily based in the gym . At the gym I participated in group fitness classes, shadowing the personal trainers as they wo rked with clients, watching client health consu ltations and learning new fitness exercises. ~ I was enthusiastic to go to work experience and I thoroughly enjoyed all activities assigned as each

day I participated in a different activity. My week at the Eltham Leisure Centre has confirmed that I woul d love to work in the health and fitness industry as I enjoy sport and exercise and meeting new peopl e.

Year 11 Art and Design This year, being Visual Arts Captain, has been a very rewarding role to have within our school. Having a passion and being involved heavily in arts subjects throughout my high school experience has made becoming Visual Arts Captain all the more important to me.

Throughout the year, I have worked alongside the Student Leadership Team, the Senior Leadership Team, the Arts Key Learning Area and staff. All of the work and communications have been highly enjoyable and have really added to my Yr 12 experience at CLC. extra an ·having Whilst responsibility in Yr 12 can be

difficult to manage at times, at the end of the year I see how much it has added and developed to make Yr 12 a truly wonderful year. Although I have been involved in, and organised, many activities and events throughout this year, my favourite would have to be Day Womens' International and Arts Club. I had the most fulfilling task of creating a piece of art for International Womens' Day. I collected photographs · from the girls, showing women in their life who inspired them most. Many girls shared their story on the back of the photo, giving this artwork so much more meaning than what I had

intended. Whilst I am very proud of this piece and having the humbling experience of seeing it every day, I am also extremely proud of the way this artwork was able to convey the strong spirit of the school's encouragement towards women of the world.

The Arts Club participated in many meetings, where we contributed to painting and creating many of the sets and props for the school production, Peter Pan. The Arts Club girls were highly motivated and committed to these activities, which made it most enjoyable.

I was very proud of the girls' accomplishments in this club and inspired by their friendship

throughout the year. Overall, I have gained so much from being the Visual Arts Captain for CLC; it has been one of the most rewarding experiences, full of cherished memories.

Year 11 Reflection I would like to congratulate the 144 students who have enthusiastically and consistently given their best throughout the year and were involved in all aspects of College life, both inside and outside the classroom.

The girls have experienced a wide range of opportunities this year, including: Work lnterschool Experience, Competitions, Sporting Athletics and Swimming Carnivals, House Activities, Founders' Day, Performing numerous night, Arts trip, Kenya excursions, cake Production, Choir, _ stalls, Bands, Leadership Positions and the Night

of Nights - the Year 11 Formal. All these activities have contributed to th e development and girls' wonderful journey towards their final year of education.

I thank our Year 11 class captains: Nicole Milella, Tabacchiera, Brianna Chelsea Major, Han nah Turner, Brigitte La Rosa and Brooke Smale, who have leadership demonstrated a positive in qualities and productive manner.

I particularly thank Laura Meghan and Verrocchi Kostas for their outstanding contribution as Year Level Leaders. The Year 11 staff and students were blessed

to have such committed working hard and representatives.

I would like to thank all staff, conscientious the particularly the Homeroom Teachers, Ms Guardiani, Mrs Notting, Mr O'Sullivan, Mrs Kirley, Pak Sil and Mr Chalhoub, who have worked tirelessly for the benefit of the girls. I would also like to acknowledge the ha rd work and commitment of Ms Pascalis, Mr Di Camillo and Mrs Evans for their ongoing support of myself and, most importantly, the Year 11 girls of 2013.

A s the year closes and the girls' educational journey continues, I pray that they continue to embrace the challenges that their final year at Catholic Ladies' College will bring .

VCAL 2013

VCAL Year 11 Every student in Yr 11 has had such a great year creating their own project and presenting it to the class. Chelsea, Ruby and Sherridyn did an amazing presentation on the professional application of make-up. All of the students were then able to try out their new skills on each other. Nicola, Lauren, Adele and Emily showed the class how to make a delicious apple crumble. Thanks to Demi, Rochelle and Gemma, we all know how to look after our skin with natural, homemade facial scrubs and masks. Finally, all of our painting has improved with an in-depth tutorial on the various brush strokes required to paint a masterpiece, thanks to Brittany, Jasmine and Emma.

An excursion to the RSPCA in Burwood provided great insight for our Animal Welfare studies.

The saddest thing was seeing

the animals on death row; the animals that found their way into the RSPCA because they were no longer wanted by their owners.

at each other and said, " No wayl Who does that?" It might sound a bit boring, but it was all done in a way that had us all captivated.

The William Angliss Coffee Academy in the city was our next excursion, where we all learned the history of coffee and how to make a perfect cappuccino and cafe latte with coffee art. Since then, many of us have enjoyed wowing our friends and family with cappuccinos topped with love hearts and fern leaves.

All in all Yr 11 VCAL was an enjoyable and rewarding year.

Teen Expo was our third destination and the highlight was the presentation by comedian Khaled Khalafalla.

He had everyone in stitches and the main themes of the presentation were respect, self respect, bullying, cyber-bullying and racial discrimination. Some of the stories of cyber- bullying and racial discrimination were jaw dropping. We all looked

As a VCAL Group, our first task for the year was to organise an activity to an exhibition. So off we went to the Zoo. We split up into groups and did our o wn studies on various animals.

There was a seal show which had an interesting twist; the seals picked up rubbish and bottles in the water and put them in the bin - the message was "save the seals".

We had a night at the Melbourne Theatre Company's production of The Minds which was quite amusing. None of us

had been to such a high calibre play before and we al l enjoyed the experience.

Each of us had to create and o rganise a group activity.

This was great, because we designed activities that we are interested in. We went surfing, cooked a healthy stir fry, created a garden, made designer pencil cases, helped out in a soup kitchen, made espresso coffees for the school, did a food handling course, participated in a fitness class and did a 'Responsible Service of Alcohol' course.

Thanks to a day out at William Angliss Coffee Academy, we can all make the perfect coffee finished with coffee art. Latte anyone?

Year 12 Reflection For the Yr 12 Class of 2013, the year opened with a special blessing from Sister Elizabeth Costigan RSC. When, in her closing words, she revealed to the girls that she prays for each of them every day each girl, at that moment, all felt and understood what a special place CLC will always be for them. This sense of being a part of a community that cares and has, at its heart, our faith in Ch rist has sustained the Yr 12s during a hectic, sometimes even frantic, VCE journey.

There have been many highlights over the past year, starting on the very first day of term one, when the Yr 12s met their Yr 7 'buddy' for a shared lunch and then completed an 'Amazing Race' around the school grounds. The Easter Breakfast with their Yr 7 buddy was also a highlight. Many Yr 12s reflected that it did not seem so long ago that they were the Yr 7 buddy themselves at this same event.

The Formal in February (despite the failure of the air-conditioning) and the retreat in March were wonderful opportunities for the students to share, to .bond and to be a community.

Every fortnight the Yr 12 Assembly time was an opportunity to hear from many guest speakers on a wide range of topics including effective study techniques, post Yr 12 options, relaxation techniques, good nutrition and safe partying.

For there to be a beginning, there must also be an ending. While the academic demands of Yr 12 are challenging, what many girls have found even more challenging is the looming sense that, eve r so quickly, their CLC time is coming to an end.

As a level we reflected on this in a liturgy centred around the Irish tradition of appointing someone to be 'the keeper of the coals', so a fire could be started easily the next day. As a level, we pondered what are the coals that we are entrusted to keep as members of the CLC community? I am sure that our Yr 12s enter their new world grounded in the charism of The Sisters of Charity and as women of faith, justice, hope and compassion. They will be the keepers of these coals.

The Yr 12s of 2013 have been a delightful community to work with and, as sad as some of them may be about the prospect of moving on, sad also will be many of their teache rs to see them go. However the future is bright and boundless and we take cheer in the knowledge that each one of our 2013 graduates is moving on to exciting times.

On behalf of the CLC community I farewell you with part of a Celtic inspired blessing titled a 'Friendship Blessing'.

May you be blessed with good friends .

May you learn to be a good friend to yourself.

May you be able to always journey to that place in your soul where there is great love, warmth, feeling and forgiveness.

May this change you.

Year 12 Graduation Final Thanks For six yea rs we've journeyed together here at CLC, ga ining new friends along the way and our time here is something for which we will forever be grateful.

On behalf of the Class of 2013, we'd like to extend our thanks to all the staff of the College who have shown a special interest in ou r schoo li ng.

In particular, we would like to thank

our Yr 12 teachers, whose end less enthu siasm was an inspiration. To Mrs Pascalis, Senior Years Coordinator, thank you for your passionate approach to our learning and our purpose. To Mr Salmic, the Yr 12 Team Leader, thank you for your infinite wisdom and advice throughout the year. Last ly we'd like to acknowledge our families, who have loved and supported us along the way.

We thank you all for helping make our final year one of the most memorable here at the College.

It's ou r pleasure as Chief Editors of the Caritas 2013 to present a report on behalf of this year's Magazine Team.

We have both been active members of the hardworking magazine team for numerous years and are pleased to have been given this role in our final year at Catholic Ladies' Collage.

This experience has seen us work together in developing many technical skills as well as organisational and leadership qualities. The whole team has worked extremely hard to complete this magazine, in the hope to create something memorable for all students.

In this year's Caritas we worked to create a different style magazine to that of previous years, to modernise it while at the same time giving it a popular vintage look. As a Team we decided that using modern clean lines, while incorporating vintage styled backgrounds, we could achieve this. We drew inspiration from alternate magazines such as Frankie, to create our own individual and unique magazi~.

It has been a pleasure to work with all the girls who have committed themselves throughout the year. Without their continual support and work, this would not have been successful. Thank you to all the Magazine Representatives from across the year levels.

Our biggest thanks must go to Mrs Lynn Mason; without her tireless work, support and vision this would not have been possible. She has been selfless in giving up her lunch times and vast expertise during the entire duration of this year. Her continued support has been much appreciated and will be always remembered.

We hope you have enjoyed this year's Caritas as much as we enjoyed creating it.
