Prin c ipal 's Report the many possibilities as we look ahead and "imagine the future" and all that is yet to come. We have undertaken an External School Review, which enabled us to understand our strengths and the opportunities inherent in the spheres of Mission, Learning and Teaching, Student Wellbeing, Leadership and Management as well as the wider Catholic Ladies' College Community. The recommendations from this process will inform future developments and the College Strategic Plan. Of great excitement and anticipation has been watching the construction of the Sacred Space/Music Centre, we look forward to its completion in the early months of 2012.

Imagine ... Our 2011 Theme of "Imagine" has provided rich and varied opportunities to explore the creative, spiritual and imaginative strands of our Being this year. We have celebrated 40 years of Ca tho Iic Ladies' College in Eltham; this acknowledgement enabled us to remember with gratitude the vision, people and programs that have come before us, yet also consider

The heart and life of this College is the students; the generous ways that our young women engage in their learning, forge respectful relationships and develop lifelong friendships is a delight to share. The passion, commitment and perseverance of students in their goals and learning, is something that we see flourishing on a daily basis. Congratulations to every 2011 student, you have much to be proud of in your achievements. In acknowledging the giftedness and generosity within our community, I particularly thank the College Board of Directors, the College Parents ' Association and

the Old Collegians ' Association. The work o ( each of these groups provides wise and generous input into so many facets of life at Catholic Ladies' College. Together with College Staff, each respective group strives to provide the best possible outcomes for all students. At this time of year, I am also mindful of those in our community who are finishing their time at Catholi Ladies' College, be they students, families or staff; I sincerely thank each and every one for your time wth us. Finally thank you to our students whose work, application, friendship and passion for life make Catholic Ladies ' College a great school to belong to. Congratulations to Mrs Lynn Mason and the Stude11t Magazine Team. May each girl enjoy and treasure the memories of201 I at Catholic Ladies ' College as· presented in this edition of Caritas.

College Captain 's Report What a year! It has undoubtedly been an exciting, hectic and amazing one. It has been so incredible to hear laughter that fi Ils the corridors, to see legs scurrying along the athletic track and to hear your angelic voices singing the college song at the end of every assembly. We are so lucky here at CLC to be in an environment where we are encouraged to pursue our dream and where we can be ourselves. I commend you all on making the most of all the opportunities offered here. During my time at CLC I have found that getting involved makes you look forward to coming to school. I would like to thank the wonderful Student Leadership Team who bas WQrked tirelessly to ensure that our

Thank you to everyone who has smiled back to me as I pass by in the hall. I wish you all the best for next year and I know that I will be hearing great things about all of you in the future. I have had the absolute privilege of being your school captain this year. I will miss CLC and you all dearly.

Middle Ye.a rs Coo dinator 's

Mr Jeff Hobbs

The Middle Years is a time of welcome, consolidation and growth from the time girls enter the College in Year 7 to making subject selections at the end of Year 9. Along the way the girls are challenged and grow through activities such as the Year 7 camp, Year 8 ski camp and the Year 9 activities days.

Beyond the activities, girls participate in NAPLAN testing at years 7 and 9 and are involved in a myriad of learning experiences both in and beyond the formal

classroom setting. We can be very pleased with the standard of interest and curiosity our girls bring to such adventures. Year 8 City Experience allows the girls to move beyond the suburbs to explore the streets and activities of Melbourne, while Year 9s find themselves at events as diverse as surfing at Ocean Grove, hearing stories ofBunjil at Healesvile Sanctuary, or exploring the gold speckled depths ofBallarat while touring Sovereign Hill. Each girl finds a way to explore new ways of learning and relating to each other through these events.

the girls become independent and confident young women as they journey from Primary School to the edge ofVCE ._Their ability to relate to one another in positive ways and the way they appreciate the learning opportunities which are provided to them is a credit to their families and to them . As teachers, we have a great pride in working with such positive signs of what the future holds.

Mr Jeff Hobbs Middle Years Coordinator

We can be proud of our students who willingly throw themselves into these events in the hope of discovering new things about their world and themselves. What is most wonderful about the middle years is seeing

Sen ior Years Coordinator's Report It seems almost like

yesterday that the 2011 school year was about to begin and now we have arrived near the end for our Year l2s . This year has been an exciting one for the senior students as they have approached Mrs Christina Pascalis their school life and its various challenges with - 6mrnitment and passion. For the Year 12s the year began with meeting their Year 7 Buddy and helping them feel welcome. For many the experience brought back memories of their first day at CLC. The Formal became the highlight of the first term and in close collaboration with Mr Frank Salmic the evening was a great success. The Year! Is experienced a similar wo nderful experience with their Formal in July and fQ r the Year I Os a Social at Whitefriars was a most enjoyable event.

and commitment. They have worked tirelessly in all House activities, supported the College production and participated in all the sports programs that the college has to offer. Many senior students have involved themselves in Debating, Social Justice, Peer Support, Dance groups and the list goes on. ln each of these areas the students have supported each other and been role models for the younger students. As we near the end of the year I would like to thank the senior students for being the positive role models they have been for the younger students . T would also like to thank the Senior Leadership Team for their support of the students in all aspects of their lives at the College.

Early in February, 151 girls began their secondary schooljourney. They brought with them bags filled with new books and equipment and plenty of enthusiasm and much excitement, maybe tinged with a littl e anxiety. The girls soon settled into their new classrooms and then readil y embraced all that the day offered. The Year 7s were indeed fortunate to experience many learning opportunities beyond the classroom in 2011. In Term l they enjoyed a three day Outdoor Education camp to Camp Manyung at Mount Eliza. The weather was not always ' picture perfect ', however the girls were still able to participate in most activities including the vertical challenge, canoeing, sea kayaking, the flying fox, snorkelling, beach education, giant swing, leap of faith and high/low ropes course and fishing. These activities were not only physically challenging, but they also provided many opportunities for the girls to meet, mix and work with many new girls and form some new friendships . There was also much excitement and fun enjoyed by all at the evening activities which included the Talent night, House Games Challenge and watching " Mamma Mia". The three days proved to be a positive bonding experience. The Year 7s also enjoyed a few excursions throughout the year including trips to the Zoo, Jets Gymnastics and the Tutankhamen exhibition at the Melbourne Museum. They also had many opportunities to celebrate, learn and reflect as a group including the Year 7 and 12 Easter breakfast, Peer Support, Reflection Day at the Eltham Community Centre, the Tree of Life Programme and the Year 7 Eucharist. The 7s also participated in their first lnterhouse competitions of swimming and athletics .

It was wonderful to see many of the girls participate in the extensive range of extra-curricular activities offered at CLC. Year 7s have ably represented the College in many sporting competitions and been involved in a variety of clubs and groups including Book Club, Drama Club, Social Justice Group, Choir, Junior Band, Junior Debating, the Da Vinci Decathlon and Tournament of Minds. I was delighted to see several Year 7 girls participate in the College production "The W'Oz" and can only marvel at their enthusiasm and many skills and talents.

·-:::

This year has been a busy and exciting one. l would like to thank all who contributed to the successful running of this year level. In particular, I thank the Year 7 Homeroom teachers, Mrs Chris Nolan, Mr Sil Ruron, Mrs Carey Webster, Ms Caroline Bailey, Mrs Chris Haller, Ms Renee Maloney, Ms Jessica Vassallo, Mr David Young, Mrs Kim Sharples and Mrs Katherine Fullarton for their dedicated interaction with the girls in their care

I was truly delighted to see the girls in Year 7 embrace with joy, enthusiasm and commitment all of the opportunities the College offered this year. The girls can indeed look back on their year with much pride and a real sense of achievement.

My first experience of the Stude)lt Leadership Team began with a workshop. Our leadership workshop broke through the conventions of your average uninspired leadership lectures and activities. l was able to witness and partake in a day that sparked motivation and determination in a bunch of headstrong girls. We were able to form creative and innovative ideas and in a mere few hours we had already fanned a strong and capable team . From my experience, it feels as ifthe spirit of the leadership workshop carried through to this year and is evident in the SLT team's work on the recycling and rubbish campaigns and especially in our early Christmas celebrations. This year I have seen a team work hard and put in hours to help out with fundraising such as Project Compassion and the Royal District Nursing Service The Student Leadership Team demonstrated qualities of true leaders in their work. It is fair to say I am thankful for my time in the Student Leadership Team this year; never have I been surrounded by so many intelligent and committed girls and to be graced with their company. This year has been a true pleasure .

Bridgette Kennedy College Vice Captain The SLT is a dynamic and motivated group of girls, chosen by their peers, who represen and lead a large number of activities over the year at Catholic Ladies' Co llege. The group originally met at the end of the previous year for a leadership training day and then met once a fortnight over the year to plan activities and awareness raising events. This year the SLT had two main focus points: raising awareness about litter around tht; school in the light of environmental sustainability, and also fund raising for a numbe~ of worthy causes including Caritas Australia, Breast Cancer Awareness, The Royal District Nursing Service and St Vincent de Paul. As well as organising the placement of recycle bins around the school and the presence of Tina Tidy, the anti-littering superhero, the girls also had a very successful "Chri stmas in September"; this events allowed senior students the opportunity to enjoy the Christmas spirit which they miss so often in December each year. Nearly $2,000 was raised for a number of charities in the hope that others might have as good a Christmas as many of us do. It is inspiring from a teacher 's perspective to be able to work with a group of girls who bring so much enthusiasm and thoughtfulness to their leadership roles.

Junior Years Writing Breaking All Barriers I don't want to go. I wish that I could remain in this car forever, or better, seize the wheel and drive far, far away from the clutches of authority. But that's not how it works here. You can't run from the government any more than you can run across water. My best chance of freedom is through those doors, and yet so is the very real possibility that I will never come out again, except to see the cold, forbidding bars of a jail cell.

But then my mind is made up for me. A parking inspector is making his way down the street. Soon he'll see me, slumped in my still running car in front of the Supreme Court, and will Want to know what l'm doing here. But that's one story 1 can 't bear to go over again . I open the door, shivering as the icy wind bites at my exposed face. At least it will be warm inside. I shut the door and walk slowly up the stairs, feeling as though I'm marching straight into my own cell, breaking down all the barriers with every step I take. My feet could be cement blocks, they feel so heavy. I push the glass doors open with my shoulder, sighing with momentary relief as the warm air washes over me. for one instant, half a second maybe, my fears subside from their constant tugging at my mind and hope squeezes ifself into my heart, crammed amongst all my worries and stresses, easing them. Then 1 see the surly security guard staring me down, and I remember why I am here. My slight hope evaporates and the worry and fear regains control. [present myself to the guard. Up close, he isn 't so terrifying, the grim look in his eyes softening to one of hard sympathy as I explain my purpose. But this is bis job. He's seen thousands of l?eople just like me walk through those doors, just as scared. He sympathises for me, but says nothing. In here, the law overpowers any sentimental values. lle guides me through more glass doors and down a wide hallway where hard plastic seats are set along the walls, which are covered with notifications, warnings and signs for prohibited items. I don't sit, althougb the guard raises his . eyebrows when 1 remain standing. To sit down would

2 ()

~o20//

be accepting my predicament. I just can't do that. It would be like closing the door on any tiny sliver of hope that might arrive. So 1 wait, without really acknowledging time passing or the soft rumble of noise beyond the glass. I focus my attention instead on the big wooden doors at the end of the hallway. Beyond those doors are the deciders of my fate . I can think of nothing else. Fear clouds my mind. Then a man's voice breaks through my haze of worry, directing me to walk through those doors, break another barrier down. It's time. I take a few tentative steps before I realise that the man has gone. J find that this doesn't surprise me. Not anymore . Nobody wants to be around people like me. A sudden sequence of knocks on the doors, and they swing open slowly, the final barrier to be broken down. I stumble forward . I dol,l 't like the looks on t)1e faces of the people staril,lg at me. They are all too familiar.

..

The doors slam shut behind me, sealing my fate .

Year 8 .R e fl e c t i.o n

The year 20 LL has been ti lied with many joyous moments shared with the girl s. Together, we bave experienced numerous, wonderful programs and countless moments of friendship and happiness. The year began with pastoral programs, building on students' social skills, resilience, conflict resolution and touching on the Tree of Life Program from the previous year. Students were reflective of how they may work together within the whole Year 8 community to foster positive friendships and maintain respect for one another. With the support of the College Counsellors, the programs proved to be a great success in assisting with the students' transition into Year 8. The highlight for me this year was definitely experiencing the City Experience Program with the girls . Each group initiated their own research project which explored the question: What Makes Melbourne Marvellous? Some of the projects included investigations in Melbourne's architecture, culture, environment and sustainability, hidden arcades and laneways, transportation, sporting, hospitality and tourism. This year, the girls also experienced a new program, the High Resolves Initiative. It was a delight to listen to the students discuss ways in which they could make a difference to their local community, and in response to fair trade. The girls experienced the Hunger Banquet, reflecting on equality and justice. Students thoroughly enjoyed additional activities, such as dressing up for the annual Year 8 Halloween Party, participating in dance and tournament activities during the Year 8 Humanities Medieval Day and taking part in the pride of the College Athletics and Swimming Carnivals. With warmer weather in August, our Year 8 ski camp to the snow turned quickly into a fun activities camp where the girls enjoyed bush hiking, bike riding and canoeing. The girls' enthusiasm and high spirits were not to be dampened by any means . Together, we enjoyed the beauty of the land and the weather. This year has rewarded me with a lovely group of girls. Together we have experienced ample opportunities for enrichment and have risen to the challenges. The class of Year 8, 2011 has been filled with 153 beautiful young women. I thank each and every one of them for their individuality and humour. I wish each of them all the very best for FORM II ROOM 5 FETE• - the future.

Form II Room 5 had a fete in the hall on the 14th of October. It was organised by Sharon·-~ I would also like to thank the great team Miller, Anne McClelland, Susan Joeng and of Year 8 Homeroom Teachers who have Ann De Pellegrin and a helper Maree Frisby. supported and encouraged the whole Year - They sold pop com, toffees (yum'), honey flakes , a lucky dip, also a raffle for whi ch first 8 community throughout the year. The rize was a teddy bear and second prize a blue year truly has been a most rewarding one. p vase. Also there was a novelty store. The key learning area of Humanities includes tbe disciplines of History, Geography, Economics, Politics, Legal Studies, Accounting and Business Studies. At the Year 7-10 levels, the students study Humanities as a core subject, focusing mostly on the disciplines of History and Geography with aspects of the other disciplines included, while at Years 11 and 12 the students can specialise where they have the option of selecting from a range of Humanities subjects.

Mr Damian Brasier Human/ties KLA Team Leader This year, the Year 7s have learnt a huge range of things in our Humanities lessons. In semester one, we studied geography and learnt about mapping, endangered animals and the Asia Pacific region. We went to the Melbourne Zoo and looked at all the different species of animals. In the second semester we learnt about the ancient civilisations of Egypt and China. One focus in our study of Ancient Egypt was on the 18 year old pharaoh Tutankhamun, which took us on an excursion to the to Melbourne Museum where we entered the world ofTutankhamun and his family. This year we have learnt heaps and had lots of fun with it.

Tessa Lowe and Gabrielle Power 7C Humanities has been a class that everyone has succeeded in, learning about The Roman Empire, Vikings, Medieval Times, Renaissance, Mapping and Weather. I think one topic that everyone enjoyed thoroughly was Medieval Times, constructing a medieval castle, creating a brochure about medieval churches and learning about the medieval law and order system. Other topics were Geography and Mapping. We were going on City Experience so we needed to know how to navigate our way round the city. Many of us had never been to the city without a parent so it was going to be a challenge finding our way around and we worked hard because none of us wanted to get lost! Our Humanities knowledge has increased due to the wonderful Teachers and school resources.

Courtney Barro SE Year 9 Humanities has covered a wide range of topics such as Australian History, Legal Systems and Australian Government. These topics have led us to go on different excursions out of school. They helped us explore our learning visually in

such ways as the excursion to the Gold Fields at Sovereign ~ill. Tbat was one of the highlights of the year for us. Letting us explore the place in groups, we tried old fashioned bread from the Sovereign hill Bakery and old fashioned swe~ts such as big lollypops and raspberry drops from the lolly store. Sovereign Hill was a wonderful and interesting experience and it let us imagine ourselves in those times. This year has been filled with lots of fun and memorable times mixed with lots of learning.

Maddison Smart & Bethany Spiteri 9D Year I 0 Humanities explores many aspects of History, Human Development, Geography and Economy. The twentieth century was closely studied and enjoyed, focusing on World War I, Gallipoli, the Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression. World War 2 was most interesting study with the class fortunate enough to go on an excursion to the Shrine. The second focus of Economy taught students how their lives were affected by imports and exports as well as world trade .. Geography was next, closely studying developing countries. The poverty touched our hearts and statistics alarmed us' Special interest was shown in how Sudanese residents are living locally today. We looked at the horrible situation in Sudan and why these problems are apparent. Humanities in Year I 0 opened our eyes to the wider world and allowed us to discover what is occurring beyond our vision.

Amanda Febbraro IOC In studying Geography I have been provided with some engaging and fascinating topics to work with and have had the opportunity to develop further my spatial skills and power of analysis. As a class we have explored Human and Natural Environments and our various excursions have provided the hands on type of work this subject requires. I have loved our smaller class size, enabling closer work with our Teacher and strong relationships with the girls in our class. This year I have been able to realise Geography is a subject with many exciting and accessible career paths, and whether I choose to follow one of these or not, I will always take away with me the practical skills I have learnt and the memories of laughter on the excursion buses with my wonderful Geography class.

G rade Debatin g Team Debating at Loyola College has been a fun and challenging ex perience this year. Particularly when we had our secret topics! We we re told our topics an hour before the debate and were the n left to quickly brainstorm and organise our arguments. T hey included the topics 'S macking should be illegal' and 'A ll econdary students should learn an Asian language. ' We tben finished our year with a I point win arguing the negative side ' That public transport should be free'. Through debating I have met some amazing girls. Katie Williamson and Zoe <'P atterson-Janes . They made debating so much fun with their positive attitudes and commitment, debating wouldn ' t have been the same without them.

Year 7 Debating Team 2 L-R: Vanessa Plumb. Charloffe Liddicoat, Victoria Hogan, Bridget Phillips, laura Hall Absent: Emily Ristovski

We all feel that our confidence and public speaking skills have improved with each debate. Being able to listen to the opposition and fonn rebuttals becomes easier with more experience. We also want to thank Mr Hobbs who helped us prepare at CLC and Mrs Diedrich who regularly attended as our cheer squad.

D Grade Debating We had two teams participating in the competition this season. Congratulations to all the girls for their enthusiasm and commitment to Debating - Estelle Pelletier, Aliejana Harris, Hope Barry, Sarah Coffield, Geethanjali Gangula, Kate Gilmour and Emma Harvey. Thank you to Mr Salmic and Miss Duncan for their coaching and assistance on debate nights.

2011 has been a fantastic year fo e the sta ff and students at CL , in contributing to Mission at a local community level and also to overseas projects.

Mission

Traditional programs such as "Project Compassion" were carried out effectively as always and ongoing programs such as raising awareness and funds for "School s Aids Day" through the selling of red ribbons was also very successful. Spokespeople, from an African community that CLC have been sponsoring for several years now, visited us, enlightening the girls and showing their appreciatio n, for our continuing efforts to support students in their villages. A very fortunate group of our CLC students visited Central Australian Aboriginal people in order to gain a better understanding of indigenous history and ways of life. Almost 2000 candy canes were sold for our Christmas in September day, which not only showed the generosity and care between peers within the College, but a greater compassion for the Royal Nursing District, a cause the College has been contributing towards for many years. A large number of girls across all year levels have either used their already developed knitting skills, or taken the initiative to learn especially for a more ' hands on ' approach to mission life. Staff and students have been knitting squares that will be made into blankets for poor children in Africa, through the " Blankets For Babies" program. CLC has so many charitable young women, dedicated and willing to try new things. I' m very proud of all of you who have been involved in showing your compassio n for the disadvantaged and vulnerable members of the world' Each little bit makes a huge difference!

Rec on cilia ti o"n Group ...

The past year bas been an exciting one! The Reconciliation Group bas been inspirational and have achieved amazing things. Students in the Recontiliation Group have been investigating information about Aboriginal people and their culture. They have researched current matters and have become more informed about the complex issues facing Aboriginal people such as health , education and standard of living. Our Aboriginal brothers and sisters are encountering new struggles that are associated with globalisation. We read of pressure that is placed on Aboriginal people to relinquish magnificent site in the Kimberleys in Western Australia. Aboriginal people are standing alongside mainstream Australia in a desperate attempt to preserve the beauty of the place they call home. This resonates with so many Australians as our homes are worth fighting for! Tlie Aboriginal people are fighting for their land and their homes. In a world that is striving to preserve the environment, it is certainly a worry for all Australians when our natural resources are threatened by large corporations. The Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation is also fighting a large corporation over the issue of Sacred Land in Western Australia. Fortunately, when we see the keen students raising awareness, becoming informed and getting involved, it makes us realize that the future is bright' Our students are socially and culturally aware of their fellow Aboriginal Australians and we are working to create change' The Reconciliation Group continues to support the Open Doors Foundation and Project Dreaming Tracks. In this small step forward we start to see change in the world. Our students are the leaders of tomorrow and lam proud to work with such an enthusiastic group of students who are so determined to achieve social justice.

Association The end of the year is in sight but the Parents Association is as busy as ever with much to be done in this final' term. Our lunch time Barbeques continue to be a huge hit with the girls and we are so indebted to our coordinators for doing such a fabulous job in organizing the food and the helpers. Mrs Debbie Bowman stepped down from the position of co-ordinator last term due to other work commitments and it is with deep appreciation that we thank her for her dedication in running the College barbeque. We welcome and thank Mrs Tracy Collard for stepping into Debbie's shoes. Tracy worked alongside Mrs Louise Danson and both ladies contributed to the huge success of the Barbeque Days. As a relatively new member to the College community Tracy has embraced the opportunity to become part of the team, making new friends and networking with so many other Parents. The Parents Association annual second hand book and uniform sales are both activities that have not only proven to be a great source of fundraising income but have provided a very valuable service to the College Community. .W riting UNJT 3 English - Context= Identity and Belonging Prompt: "When one has a foot in two worlds, two cultures, belonging and identity can be complex matters" Two Worlds in One By Caty Gierer As a baby, Korean born Blossom Beeby was adopted by white Australians. She grew up with white friends, a white family and in a white world. If she looked at herself in the mirror a "foreigner" would stare back at her, while if she closed her eyes she imagined herself a rosy, white kid. This intense experience of divided self: being Asian on the outside and white on the inside is poignantly captured by Blossom Beeby in "The Face in The Mirror". This story charts a journey towards a home land and a culture she never knew growing up in the suburbs of Adelaide. It is a journey from initial disgust at brown wrinkledness to acceptance. On route there is teenage rebelliousness, a desire to embrace her "otherness" by associating with other Asians learning Korean, making sense of the written text of Korean and tasting Korean food. In a desperate attempt to discover herse lf and cement her roots, Blossom returns to Korea. However, disappointingly, she is not met with the feelings she desires. No sudden feelings of"home" and "belonging" rush to meet her. More confused than ever, Blossom is left pondering her existence in this world and her Asian-Australian identity. Even her birthplace doesn't scream out "home" or offer any comforting reassurance. Blossom concludes to keep questioning and continues her journey to discovering more about her Asian heritage. Similarly, Joo-Inn Chew battled complex issues of identity and belonging whilst growing up Asian in Bendigo as a child. In her personal anecdote "Chinese dancing Bendigo Style" Joo-Inn illustrates the difficulties she encountered, before all owing herself to embrace her individuality and be proud to be an Asian-Australian. She refers to herself and her sister as "particular hybrids" because of their Asian father and Anglo-Australian mother. With this direct split between cultures; Asian/Australian , a fi.irthcr comparison is contrasted against her parents. Never quite knowing "which side you belong to" was confusing for Joo-Inn as a child. In the schoolyard she reminds us of daily taunts, and just how obvious it is when yo u don 't look the same as everyone else. With her dull, black, home-cut hair and glasses she was always different. She always looked like an Asian, with her yell ow, dirty skin and her inability to catch a football. However even with these sure-signs of being a foreigner - her Aussie accent and Australian way of life continued. Her story explores two cultures, as Joo-Inn battles with her identity to find one that fits.

~

Inner Melbourne City is always a buzz Sunday afternoons - fresh oriental flavours fill the air, traffic whi zzes past, Asians are loudly chatting in their own tongue, oblivious to the world around them ... Sound familiar? As I turn down into China Town the scene is stereotypical. Asians are shouting to one another, trying to sell their cheap, plastic jewellery, or their fake Dolce and Gabana handbags. I smell roast pork and Honkin noodles while almond shape eyes greet me everywhere I look. Turning down another street I am confronted by a scene that one would not expect; - a family of five Asians are wearing board shorts, thongs, eating hot chips and speaking in Australian-English . I blink a few times - not sure if I have seen correctly. In the middle of China Town, the family meanders showing little interest in the shops and market stalls that line their path .

.5

......

~ ~

....

What's the issue here? To give this family a title, to label them as so many people do; I would call them Australians. As the youngest son begins chatting to his mother about footy training, it's unthinkable to imagine that they could poss ibly belong to this bu'stling, hectic Asian culture that surrounds them. They are indeed, "normal" Australians, despite their obvious Asian decent. A foot in two cultures can be confusing for some. But the family seems content, as I inquisitively fo llow them through China Town, - happy, settled, normal. But even so, a white Anglo-Australian still approaches them and asks where they are from , how long they're here for and if they speak English.

Tt is ten years since the Victorian Certificate of Appbed Learning - AL) was firs piloted to small groups of studnets in a handful of schools. Since then, it has grown in hugely with over 20,000 Victorian students opting to complete VCAL this year. At Catholic Ladies' College, we continue to maintain a small but steady cohort of students who prefer a hands on style of learning and who are forging a pathway to employment after Year 12. Each pathway is different, and to cater for this, our students have engaged in a variety of courses and work placements to reflect their diverse interests. These include: Sport & Recreation , Hair & Beauty, Child Care, Animal Care, Retail . Business Administration and Music. Throughout the year, students have been challenged in their various YC AL classes.

Class of 2100 - T hank You

Thank you

amil.

It is with great pleas ure that, on behalf of the Magazine Team 2011 , f present you with this 40 Years in Eltham celebratory edi tion of Caritas. This is also a signi fica nt yea r fo r me as I bring to you my 10th editi on as Staff Editor. l never cease to be amazed b , the enthusiasm and dedi cation of a small tea m of girls in produc ing thi s magaz ine and the vari ety of ideas they bring with them eac h year. We live in a time of rapid change and this has never been as evident to me as looking back ove r the College's 40 years in Eltham. The Magazine Team students have enj oyed reading the 197 1 Caritas with a language unique to its tim e and with a simpli city long gone. Gazing at th e images of the girl s in their brow n tuni cs, go ld terry towelling sports uni fo rm s and 70s hairdos was ca use fo r much laughter at our Tuesday lunchtime meeti ngs. It was w ith special interest that I gui ded the girl s along this year as I was student at C LC in 197 1 and thi s Cari/as is a partial retrospecti ve of the 197 1 editi on. In revisiting that editi on I couldn 't help but observe a j oyfuln ess apparent th en that still ex ists in our students today. The uni fo rms are di ffere nt and the photographs are di gital and in colour but the story remains the same; our College Community li ves on in the chari sm and tradition of the Sisters of Charity.

I congratul ate each one of th e students who make up the Magaz ine Team on th eir hard work and commitment. In parti cul ar I wo uld like to acknowl edge those girls who have been in vo lved in creating this magaz ine fo r several years. We hope yo u enj oy this spec ial edi tion of Caritas .

Mrs Lynn Mason

MONDAY 15th November, 1971 :The twemy. students of the H.S.C clan made history fo r CLC when they attended the first Graduation Night of its kind ever to be organi sed for the Matriculation candidates on 15th November. Each girl could invite fo ur guests, so there was quite a happy gathering, w ith parent s, -iriends, and teachers.. -
