I wil l never forget commencing Year 7 at CLC. I felt so unsure as I put on my blue striped dress and laced up my school shoes for the first time. As I walked through the doors, I was greeted by many friendly faces. We received our combination locks, and after a brief demonstration we began practising opening and shutting our very own gleaming new lock. I struggled with opening the lock as I constantly fumbled with the dials often turning it past my numbers. When the bell rang signalling the end of recess I had already made some fantastic new friends that to this day I continue to share friendship and laughter with. Throughout my first year here at Secondary School, I have enjoyed participating in the annual swimming and athletics carnival, peer support and of course eating pancakes expertly made by Mrs Webster and the aspiring chefs in 78! I would like to thank all my fantastic teachers who have helped me through the challenging transition from Primary School to Secondary School. I really appreciate all your help and assistance! and productive year for Year 8 students. n approached with enthusiasm and diligence ny students took up the challenges of the numerous tra-curricular activities offered by the College. City Experience was again one of the highlights of the year. All students relished their time in the city and were exemplary ambassadors for their school. They were able to successfully move around the city using the trains and trams, and their superior map reading skills held them in good stead, on most occasions. Each of the presentation evenings for the parents at the end of the program was informative and entertaining. Other highlights of the year included Mission Day and the Halloween Dinner in Term 4. The Year 8 camp at the end of August was an opportunity for the students to challenge themselves physically in a cold, outdoor environment and all students who attended participated very enthusiastically in the various activities. Thank you to all 2009 Year 8 students. I hope that you look back on this year as a time of great friendships, good fun, deep learning and a developing awareness of yourselves as young women . A special thank you must go to th e homeroom teachers for their support, and for their professional and ca ring nurturing of the students.

In 2009 the girl s' eager pa rticipation has produced some exciting results for th e Catholic Ladies' College House Program. House proceed ings began with a welcome to the new Year 7 students, where each student was given a letter from their Year 12 House Buddy. Later in the term, w hilst on Year 7 camp, the students worked together in their respective House groups and created some fa ntastic House Ban ners w hich are on di splay in the Student Forum . The first major Inter House competition for the year was the Swimming Carnival. Dressed in house colours, the girl s demonstrated their Hou se Spi rit in some amazingly creative ' Under the Deep Blue Sea' costumes. The Yea r 12 students clea rly enjoyed the opportunity to dress up and have some fun. Congratulations to Ai kenhead whose voci ferous cheer squad contributed to their house winni ng the House Spirit award. Later in the year, it was again great to see the House Spi ri t demonstrated at the Wild West Athletics Carnival. There were beautifully dressed cowgirls, war pai nted India ns and some incred ibly pri ck ly cacti - not fo rgetting of course the sheriff, M r Young, w ho was trying to keep everyone under control ! Loyola managed to clinch the House Sp irit award and special congratulations go to all those Loyola students w ho won the Best Dressed awards. 2009 saw the introduction of an Inter House netba ll competition fo r Yea r 7 students. This competition was very well supported and two teams fro m each House pa rticipated. Congratulations to the Loyo la and Aikenhead tea ms who won the two competitions and thanks to all the students w ho helped umpire and score. For those students w ho are interested in performing arts, another inter house competition has also been introduced thi s yea r. This was an Inter House D rama /Da nce competition held in Term 4. Inter House ri va lry would not be complete wi thout the annual House Super Challenge on Founder's Day. This year we were enterta in ed by several dazz ling Dream Teams dressed in red, blue, green and yellow. Head to head, they competed fo r tri vial knowledge, identifyi ng photos of 'unusual' staff members and demonstrati ng their physical talents by eating donuts on strings, fi shing for frogs in jelly and showing the Yea r 9 students how not to apply makeup! Finally, w hen the challenge w as over and the points were added, our dynamic compere duo, Su pergirl (M rs Julie Boyle) and Buzz Lightyea r (Mr David Young) declared V in centia the winner of the 2009 House Super Challenge. As w inter temperatures fell, students w ere asked to contribute to the Simp ly Sharing Collection . Approx imately 700 food and other items were collected by the House Capta ins over several weeks and were distributed to the St Vincent de Paul Society in Eltham and the Sacred Heart Mission in St Kilda. Thank you to all those students w ho generously donated to this collection . Finally, a big thank you to the House Captains for their effort and support of all the events held throughout 2009.

The Athletics Car ival also saw many girls dressed up with a character based on the Cowboys and Indians theme. There were many horses and Indians who came along and even more athletics records which were broken. And then ,there w;is Founder's Day, another main highlight of the school year.

The marvellous House Challenge was a highlight of the day, when students in houses united in song, cheering and laughter as they looked on .from the audience to see fellow house membe[s being covered i.{l powder' arid ating · · doughnuts blindfolded, amongst other things. But amongst a · t ff.!n 'and enjoyment, the school community also put its head down to fu raise for the wider community, achieving a commendable effort for 'Project Compassion and the Bushfire appear. These fundraising projects we~e great achievements and much of t~,orga isational credit must go to the Student Leadership Te£\m, as well as for tJieir efforts for the events of Founder's, Da and other fundraisers t"roughout th~ y~ar, such as a cake stalls. Overall it has been an extremely rewjirding year; with great efforts from the Student Leadership Team. Good work, girls!

Social Justice It has been a wonderful year for the girls at Social Justice . .. The xear g Our first task was to complete the Silent-a-than. It is a day where girls remain silent for a number of hou· to aise hOpe h money for the women living on the Thai-Burma borde. fter by the Sot!flJustice g1 the success of the silent-a-than, our next event was 0 ean up Australia Day. The girls turned up on a sizzling hot day to clean the Alistair Knox Park. In erm 2, the Social Justice girls had the task of selling BABB~ tickets with the money proceeding towards the Bushfire victims. Before the end of Term 2, the girls qegan the Fair Trade Stall They sold hot chocolates and milk shake to raise monei and awareness for the farmers in tlie third world countri~ This stall ran till midterm 3 after which we began the Jasj activity - The 40 hour famine. This event is run by Worlcf Vision to create awareness about the lives of many peopl~ living in poverty. The girls had the choice ofr not eating f<><><t,l remaining silent, not using furniture or electric products for 40 hours. This task tested the wills of many girls who realised how privileged they were in comparison to many other children their own age.

But the highlight of the week was the performance of "Rock Me Ga llil eo" w hich entertained and educated our Year 8s. All of these wonderful opportuniti es fo r our students reflect the hard work and edicatio of our Sc ience staff that have made the past yea r a great learning experience for both the students and me. In M athemati cs thi s yea r, stu dents and teachers have been very busy with new technology and resources incl uding the Tl -Nspire CAS ca lculators introduced in Year 10, M athleti cs at Yea r 7 and 8 and the new interacti ve w hiteboa rd lessons. There has been a w ide range of VCE M athemati cs studied, w ith students being eq ui pped for terti ary level (eg engineeri ng, science, medici ne, teaching), math s in the workplace (eg nursing, hea lth sciences, business) as well as competency w ith the everyday math s that is expected (eg measurement, data analysis, percentages, arithm etic, problem solving). The M ath s staff have worked tireless ly to help our stu dents become more sk ill ed and confident w ith VCE results above the state average. Yea r Nine students have begun work with the CAS (Computer Al gebra System) class set of calculators in their Al gebra, Equati ons and Graphs topi cs, becoming more fa miliar with thi s new technology. Next year all Yea r 9 and 10 students w ill be required to have the Tl -Nspire CAS ca lculator (as per the booklist) all owi ng them to more full y explore the many possibiliti es th is ca lculator offers as a problem solving tool in preparati on fo r VCE maths. O f course thi s technology hasn't replaced the " by- hand" working of the students, w ho are in the process of developing both technology assisted and technology free meth ods for solvi ng problems. Knowledgeable staff w ill continue to guide students th rough thi s journey of understanding. Students co mpeted in the UN SW M ath s Competi tion (many di stinction s and credits), the M athematics Challenge for Young Australians (hi gh level probl em solving by invitation) and the M athematica l Assoc iati on of Victori a Games Days. M aths W eek was a highlight w ith va ri ous ga mes, quizzes, competitions and acti vities (quiz, reciting pi, rubik's cubes races, maths cake decorations, math s trail, bingo) enthusiastica lly embraced by students and staff. A wid e range of experi ences, such as excursions and guest spea kers, have provided stud ents w ith a wea lth of opportuniti es to enjoy. Yea r 9 stud ents experi enced life on th e go ldfi elds at Sovereign Hill w hil st stu dying the Australian Gold Rus Students took th e opportunity to tour a mine, rid e a stage coach, shop fo r boiled lo llies, be entertained b Lo la M ontez and pan fo r go ld by th e river. Upon th eir return, students were able to apply thi s new foun kn ow ledge to th eir ri ch task fo r th e uni t. M any senior classes were also enri ched w ith va ri o us guest speakers th ro ughout th e yea r. A highlight fat · Yea r 11 History students was listening to Vi etn am Veterans share th eir experi ences as vo lunteers and conscri pts of th e Au stralian Arm y in Austra li a's longest wa r. The Veterans also brou ght along many photos and oth er memorab ilia for students to view. Humanities W eek once aga in saw many students become invo lved in all th e acti vities on offer. Thi s yeat saw th e continuation of our daily qui z qu esti ons as we ll as th e annual Humaniti es Super Qui z on th e las day. Stud ents challenged th eir knowledge of th e world w ith o ur second ever 'C LC Geography Bee' w hile others competed in th e 'C LC Amaz ing Race' over th e five days. Stud ents raced aro und th e College finding clu es and completing challenges in o rd er to be th e first to th e pit stop each day. So, at th e end of th e yea r, th e girl s sho uld take great pride in th ei r own work but sho uld also turn to th ose aro und them and th ank th em fo r th eir success. However, as ind ica ted in an articl e in The Age thi s yea r by a girl w ho was about to fini sh yea r 12, th e tru e success of a stud ent is not as much in th e num ber sent to her at th e end of yea r 12 but more by th e perso n she becomes as she journeys throu gh school. Girl s gained a great dea l through th eir parti cipati on in sw imming and athl eti cs ca rni va ls, Founder's D ay, th e form al, th e Fit to Drive program, The So und of Mu sic, sportin g tea ms, debatin g tea ms and all else that is offered at school. It is th e w ill ingness to bring herself to th ese events w hich shows th e true natu re of a stud ent and her abilit y to be a part of a thrivin g community. 2009 has been a hard year of SACs, exams and endless amounts of homework for the Year 12s of Catholic Ladies' College. Despite the pressures and stresses that this year puts on each student, we've made it through to the end . To say it was a solo effort, that we got to this point alone would be not be true. Of course we should each feel proud of ourselves, but it is the hard work and efforts of our teachers whose help along our journey was a very appreciated necessity. For her support, encouragement, never ending efforts and donations of industry sized hot chocolate, we thank Ms. Cymbalak. I cannot think of a person I would rather have guide the Year 12s. I wish her luck for next year at her new school. Dr. Crowle, Ms. Et, Mr. Todd, Mr. Platt and Mrs. Henderson - our homeroom teachers-their organization and commitment to us every morning is much appreciated. Mrs Pascal is' enthusiastic approach towards our education and determination to meet our VCAA needs, have not gone unnoticed, so we thank her. Thanks finally to Mrs McKenna for her constant words of wisdom and guidance. Leading by example over our entire secondary school life, she has given us great strength in striving to be influential women in society and achieving our best. Catholic Ladies' College has been a great learning environment and we Year 12s have much to be thankful for.
